Canadarsquos Rider Powered NewsAs many of you know I love the Comfort Inns for the services and amenities that they offer and they are getting a facelift right across the country

Tammy Nickerson and her staff in Yarmouth were among the first to experience what this transformation into this modern comfortable and fresh environment would be like for themselves and their customers

The place is truly ldquoComfortrdquo able The renovations are going to make this chain stand out in offering the ultimate in convenience and comfort more so than any time in recent memory Bravo gang ndash the place looks wonderful and is still staffed by great people

After having my breakfast I grabbed a coffee and some creamer and took it with me to the room it was time to get sleeping beauty up Willie had his coffee and talked to PackRat Joe Paquette to find out what this day might

hold It was super foggy out so it was a cinch that Willie would not be riding back to Greenwood yet

Joe and his lovely wife Jo picked Willie and I up and took us to the Farmerrsquos Market

Situated in a historic area of town the Farmerrsquos Market is filled with an eclectic mix of vendors I got to taste some Tidal Wine from the Annapolis Highland Vineyards winery and although it was tasty I still enjoyed the one from the Grand Pre Winery better While I was talking to some of the various exhibitors Jo had gotten herself some stunning lilies to plant in her garden and Willie and Joe wandered around sampling tidbits from the various vendors

After meandering through the vendorrsquos booths with offerings of everything from meals to art we grabbed coffees and headed outside

to the picnic tables The music from the entertainer that had just taken the stage inside was wafting gently around us and we found ourselves singing along and just enjoying

We discussed the various things going on in Yarmouth and decided that we would have lunch at a festival called ldquoA Taste of Yarmouthrdquo

But first we decided a walk along the pier was in order The Yarmouth harbor is filled with ships and boats of all sizes and colors Even in the fog it was impressive

We drove down the street a ways and parked and as we stepped out of Joersquos truck the smells drifting from the tents had a persons mouth watering almost instantly

For $2 you could buy a ticket to have sample sizes of everything from clam chowder to mussels and everything in between I met some of the townrsquos councilors who are appropriately proud of their community and itrsquos offerings and it was nice to have them on hand greeting the public somehow I felt like I was a part of the community because of that

My favorite was the seafood casserole served up by the volunteers of the Acadian Village and the fish cakes that were offered up in the Yarmouth community booth OK I enjoyed the hell out of the mussels toohellip

With bellies full and a bank of fog still hugging the harbor we decided it was time to go for a drive

We headed off to Cape Forchu As we drove we watched the fog roll in and out in and out It made the short drive a little eerie

We went to the Stanley Lobster Company so I could see tanks of lobsters and how they are kept fresh while waiting to be shipped to various restaurants and customers across the country This place is so cool ndash no literally it canrsquot be more than 2-3 degrees inside Big tanks of fresh seawater filled with crates that have lobsters in little cubbyholes with rubber bands on their claws so they canrsquot hurt each other or their handlers all kept very cold

Lobsters metabolisms slow right down in the

cold and so even though they may have been caught a month ago they arenrsquot aging per se We got to see a few monsters ndash 20 pounders that are babied and nurtured because of their monstrous sizes but also because of their unique colors

After our tour of the lobster tanks we walked along the beach to see where the Stanley Lobster Company customers go to eat their magnificent feeds of lobster that are cooked in an out door kitchen Customers have the choice of eating at picnic tables or inside a very small restaurant again located on the beach

I thanked our tour guide Brian for his time and soon we were back in the truck and off to the farthest point of the cape The fog was beginning to lift and the sun was coming out in its full glory

The twisty little road that took us to the Cape Forchu Lightstation and the Light Keepers Residence was filled with amazing scenery Rugged coastline boats out on the water and Yarmouth off in the distance

Samuel de Champlain named Cape Forchu which means forked cape in 1604

As we approached the lighthouse the fog had almost completely lifted and the views became more and more impressive The lighthouse stands on an immense volcanic rock precipice that looks out over the harbor and sea The very first of the ldquoApple Corerdquo lighthouses it has served as a beacon to ships captains since 1840

The craggy and magnificent the landscape makes one feel so very small and vulnerable The Lighthouse today is a visitorrsquos center that sits on 19 acres of well-groomed land and features marinerrsquos monuments a huge lawn chair that just begs to be climbed and sat in and of course the Light Keepers Residence two gift shops and a tea room

Inside the Light Keepers Residence there are artifacts from generations of light keepers who have lived here

We wandered around soaking up the sun and marveling at the scenery Soon it was time to

head to our next destination ndash the Memorial Monument at the Yarmouth School

I wanted to get some shots of this impressive monument in the glorious sunshine Last week I told you about the inspiring kids and their teacher who worked tirelessly to fundraise and design this monument

You can feel the love here That is no overstatement either I took some time to just reflect on the names finding Corporal Mike Starkerrsquos name I said a prayer and shed a tear or two ndash his memory is not forgotten and neither are the names of the other 157 who gave their lives defending those who could not defend themselves in Afghanistan

Sitting here today thinking about that monument still brings goose bumps out and makes me shiver with emotion The young people and their teacher who so lovingly worked to make this monument a reality are forever to be held in esteem for walking the talk

Pretty soon it was time to take Willie back to his bike at the Comfort Inn On the way there we stopped at the old water trough monument so I could get some photos Once Willie was packed up and on his way Joe Jo and I headed over to their place We shared glass of wine and reminisced about the day and made our plans for dinner

We were going to Rudders for lobster Now I am told that the Stanley Lobster Company serves up the best lobster dinner in the region and that Rudders is as close to first as you can get

The place was buzzing filled with people and music the smells of really good food hung in the air with a pungent invitation to gorge ones self And gorge myself I did

The lobster was cooked to perfection our waitress had a sense of humour that had us all belly laughing and her service was impeccable When it came time to leave I have to admit it was difficult Joe and his beautiful wife are two of the kindest sweetest people I have ever met

They dropped me off at the Comfort Inn Joe promising to come grab me in the morning to escort me to the next group of CAV members who would be my escorts

I did some work packed up my bike and settled in for a good nightrsquos sleep It had felt so good to have a day off of the bike and recharge my batteries a bit In the morning I was up bright and early ndash it was another glorious sun filled morning and I was going to

get to have a visit with Tammy Nickerson the manager of this Comfort Inn to talk about the renovations and just catch up with her

Westmont Hospitality Group manages many of the Comfort Inns in Canada I am not sure how or why but this company is filled with some of the most amazing women it has ever been my pleasure to meet and Tammy Nickerson is one of those women Warm and inviting her smile lights up a room and her attitude rubs off on her staff that treat everyone with amazing grace and hospitality even when shersquos not there

Tammy and her man ride and that makes coming to her hotel all the sweeter because her staff know exactly what a rider needs It makes a great experience fantastic

After coffee and breakfast and a good gab it was time to head out Joe and Doc along with Docrsquos young son were waiting for me

We saddled up and headed out and the weather was picture perfect ndash it was another one of those days that every rider lives for good company sunshine and next to nothing for wind except the wind our machines create

There was a toy run being held at Barrington and so we rode to the Tim Hortonrsquos which was the staging area for the local riders to gather There had to be 70 bikes there all getting ready to ride out and meet the others who would be partaking that morning It was fabulous to get the chance to meet so many that I have only until now known on the Internet

Our little group was heading to Shelburne to take in some of the sights we wished the Toy Run riders well and soon we were heading down some gorgeous highway through little places like Port Mouton and on into Shelburne

Shelburne was amazing utterly incredible and it is famous for a few reasons

Number one it was the 4th largest community in North America in 1783 and when 3000 Empire Loyalists came to the region the population swelled to over 10000 Birchtown not very far away became the first free Black settlement in Canada as a result of that immigration

There is one other thing that Shelburne is famous for and that is being the set for the Scarlet Letter featuring Demi Moore and Robert Duvall Because the filmmakers wanted the town to be exactly as it was in the 1700rsquos the movies producers paid to have the overhead power lines buried and left the rebuilt market square behind for the community and itrsquos visitors to enjoy

With no overhead power lines the views are unfettered and clean making this a photographerrsquos paradise

The narrow little streets are reminiscent of the times when this place was built and everyone is courteous and considerate of each other

We took in the Shelburne County Museum the JC Williams Dory Shop and the Ross-Thompson House and Store

The Dory shop is located on the waterfront and is the last of 7 shops of itrsquos kind to still



stand The dory is considered one of the most important of the small boats in Atlantic Canada and New England history and the JC Williams Dory Shop at itrsquos peak built 350 doryrsquos a year employing up to 7 craftsmenIt was a trip to walk through the museum see the tools of the day and see what the construction of a dory entailed Dory making is still alive and well in Shelburne thanks to the craftsmanship of a gentleman named Milford Buchannan He is a Master Dory Builder who possesses a Wooden Boat Building Certificate

If yoursquod like a traditional Shelburne Dory ndash hersquoll even build one for you

The Shelburne County Museum is just across the road and offers a unique look into the history of ship building in the region along with many historical archives The place is packed with amazing antiques that all play a role in telling about the history of the Loyalists of the American Revolution who settled here

The Ross ndash George and Robert Ross sons of a Scottish merchant founded Ross - Thompson House and Store in 1784 They sold pine boards cod and pickled herring in foreign ports and brought back salt molasses and many other goods that were needed in the region The store operated for over 100 years and closed for business in 1880 Today the store and house are an interactive museum with the staff dressed in the garb of the time And the buildings have been restored to what they were in the 1820rsquos

If walls could talk something tells me this building would have a lot to say Every room

is filled with goods images and artifacts of what it was like to live in Shelburne during those times and the actors are superb at making you feel that you just stepped back in time



The place is in magnificent shape as are all of the artifacts

I enjoyed my time in Shelburne and would love to go back to stay for a few days

Our little group headed off for the meeting point with 2 CAVrsquos Battle of Atlantic Unit We didnrsquot spend a whole lot of time jibber jabbering as we had to get me to Halifax and the Chocolate Lake Best Western if I was going to be there on time for our ride to Peggyrsquos Cove

I said my goodbyes to Joe and Doc and was left in the capable hands of Brenden ndash Big Mac and Chris ndash Red

In all there were six bikes that headed for Bridgewater

We stopped in this gorgeous gorgeous little community because I wanted to see the famous churches

There are many things I would have loved to take in in this most picturesque community but alas there was no time I would have loved to see the DesBrisay Museum that had been founded in 1880 I would have also liked to take one of the 2 historical walking tours

And I will when I go back to Nova Scotia I have to come back here there is just no way around it The riding is simply absolutely stupendous The people are so kind and warm the food is fabulous and the scenery and history envelope you

Pretty soon the group headed out some of the group was going to have to leave us long



the route to Chocolate Lake other obligations had to be attended to and that would leave Brenden and Red to ride me into town

I checked in at the Chocolate Lake Best Western the staff in this place is something to be appreciated efficient friendly and fast I appreciated the kick stand puck and wipe down cloth I was given at check in (They came in handy more than once)

Once my gear was unloaded and he knew I was taken care of Brenden headed off to take care of a few things he had to do He would not join us for the evening ride Red and I went to a great fish and chip joint for a bit to eat and headed back to the hotel to meet up with those who were going to ride with us to Peggyrsquos Cove

I had not been at Peggyrsquos Cove since 1986 when I had been to a Harley-Davidson Dealerrsquos Convention in Halifax and I was eager to go back The place is glorious and I had heard that the ride in was spectacular

Spectacular does not begin to cut it There are no words to describe that ride or the

views it takes you toThe visitorrsquos center was closed but I still managed to learn a great deal about this place from Red who took the time to answer every one of my many questions

The Lighthouse at Peggyrsquos Cove in St Margaretrsquos Bay was built in 1915 and it had a post office in it on the ground floor until 2009

The Swiss Air 111 Memorial sites are located here in the community of St Margaretrsquos Bay along with the communities of Bayswater and Whales Back

There are not enough hours in the day to take in everything one would like to but I was grateful to have gotten to see and do as much as I had on this day

We stayed until the sun went down and I got some of the most amazing sunset shots

We rode back to my hotel and Red promised to stop in with his lady in the morning to escort me downtown to the Halifax waterfront so that I could go explore

I unpacked the rest of the gear off my bike using the door in the parking lot ndash I love places that offer those outward facing doors

The room was well appointed with a comfortable bed and I was eager to get out of my gear and into something more comfortable I was truly looking forward to the morning Some time to get caught up with tagging photos and videos answering emails and getting some of the work I needed to do off my plate I was also eager to go explore some of the Halifax waterfront to see what changes had taken place since I had visited last

In the morning I was greeted with more glorious sunshine I headed upstairs to the outdoor patio to have my breakfast and watch

people swimming in the lake I was having a hard time getting motivated to work but I did finally manage to roust myself from the deck and make my way back to the room At around noon Red and his lady showed up to take me to the water front

I was grateful for them let me tell you There are a number of one-way streets and a whole bunch of construction and I just know I would have spent a lot of time being lost and frustrated

At about 1 pm we pulled into the waterfront parking area and said our goodbyes

I grabbed my camera and headed off for a leisurely stroll

The waterfront is beautifully done and it was filled with people from around the world based on the accents I was hearing

I stopped and watched this young fellow break dancing for tips ndash he had drawn himself quite the crowd

I had some of the best ice cream I have ever eaten at place called Sugah Confectionary amp Ice Cream

My hand paddled ice cream cone filled with bits of butterscotch in hand I went over to the windows and watched chocolates being hand made The lady I spoke to told me that all of the ingredients that can be are sourced locally and that they make chocolates in very small batches The place is packed to the rafters with all sorts of confections all Nova Scotia inspired

I also spent some time in a place called Rum Runners Rum Cake Factory

Since I am a rum drinker the name intrigued me so I had to check it out

Rum Runners is a cake factory that makes the most incredible golden delicacies

Rum Running was at one time an important if illicit trade in Nova Scotia Out of Cape Breton came one of the most famous Rum Runners of the 20rsquos a man named Gordon Stevens His wife is responsible for the recipe that Rum Runners uses today but back in the 20rsquos her recipe was a way to get rum to those suffering from prohibition and authorities that didnrsquot take kindly to rum being smuggled

With pecans coconut and a generous soaking in sweet rich rum these golden confections are addictive

I tried a sample and toyed with the idea of buying a cake to take to the room but I still had a lot of exploring to do I did however grab their card and am planning on buying

I meandered along stopping frequently as all along the waterfront there are statues and monuments that speak of the history of Halifax the harbor and her people Everywhere you turn there are shops restaurants and pubs and a variety of attractions to take in

I had taken my sweet time walking around taking in the sights and sounds and ended up missing the Maritime Museum but I did get to go to the Alexander Keithrsquos Brewery Tour Although beer is no longer brewed here the tour provides one of the best history lessons

on Halifax and the man known as Alexander Keith his contributions to the city and beer drinkers

WHAT A HOOT If you are ever in Halifax this is a must do

The actors in this place are some of the best I have seen

They are so absorbed in their character and role that you really do get a feel of what it must have been like back in the day I am not a beer drinker I am actually allergic to

beer ndash to be precise the brewerrsquos yeast so I have never really paid attention much to brewers and their history so for me this was the ultimate in history lessons

Alexander Keithrsquos Brewery is in the same place now as it was back in the 1820rsquos The man himself a Scottish immigrant was the Mayor of Halifax 3 times and was involved with council for 30 years not to mention being a director of the Bank of Nova Scotia He was a Freemason who became the Grand Master for the Maritimes He was powerful influential and very charitable

Now this man came to Canada at the age of 22 and was already a master brewer a craft he learned in England at an unclersquos business He started out his brewing career as the head brewer for Charles Boggs he then became the business manager as well and eventually bought the brewery in 1820

As the actors move you through the original building in to Keithrsquos Hall you are truly taken back to the early 1820rsquos and until you are done sampling beer in the Stagrsquos Head Pub you never feel like you slip back to the present

The tour takes you through the history the brewing process and even involves a little singing to go with the beer sampling

I did try a wee bit of the beer I tried the India Pale Ale It was crisp and clean and very refreshing and I had to remind myself only a little In spite of that warning I did end up with a vicious headache but nonetheless I

did enjoy my little taste

At the end of this delightful tour which is going to cost an adult around $19 to include the cost of the 2 beers you end up in the gift shop and can purchase souvenirs etc Or you can go finish whetting your appetite in the adjacent pub

I left Alexander Keithrsquos and headed back to where I had parked the bike some 5 hours earlier Of course I got lost thanks to all of the construction I had intended to go and see the Halifax Public Gardens little did I know that they close down at sunset

Hopelessly lost I saw a rider and his wife in a pullout After a few pleasantries I asked him if he was from the area and could he help me get back to the Chocolate Lake Best Western He agreed to guide me and about an hour later I was back at my room and packing up to get ready to head out in the morning

I had a heck of a time settling down in spite

of the comfortable bed I was going to be getting on a ferry tomorrow heading to Newfoundland and I was as excited as a four year old who is heading to Disney World

I got up for breakfast feeling like I had not slept at all a wonderful cup of coffee revived me nicely and after getting fuelled up I headed down to my packed bike I was meeting some of the boys from CAV at a Timmyrsquos parking lot and they were going to escort me as far as Truro

We rode through Stewiacke and into Mastodon Ridge via some beautiful secondary roads with lovely twists and the ever-incredible Nova Scotia scenery

Mastodon Ridge is a park with a mini golf course an art gallery at the edge of Stewiacke

We stopped for fuel coffee and hugs and pretty soon I was riding by myself Jason Rourke of 2 CAV in Cape Breton was going to be meeting me at the Canso Causewayrsquos Big Irving gas stop to escort me to the Ferry

On my way to hook up with Jason I decided to stop in Pictou and take in the Hector Heritage Quay Museum and to stop in at the world famous Grohmann Knives

Known as the birthplace of New Scotland Pictou is a pretty picturesque place whose roots go back to 1773

I looked around the shop at all of the incredible examples of their workmanship and asked if there was a tour of the Sadly there was no tour of the factory the day I stopped in but I was able to get a lesson on the history of this company and the man who designed some of the worldrsquos best knives

The first stop was Grohmann Knives The German Czechoslovakian knife maker from Sudetenland who came to Pictou after the Second World War to help found Pictou Cutlery at the behest of the Nova Scotia Government was named Rudolph Grohmann

One of Rudolphrsquos long-standing customers from Quebec had offered to help him get started in Canada if he ever decided to leave his homeland and when he decided to come to Canada he contacted the customer who introduced him to the people who eventually

It seems beavers are popular all over Canada

hired him After the closing of the Pictou Cutlery he went to work making cannon balls for the Korean War effort and aviation parts

Frustrated he built a workshop and began building and designing knives The private secretary to then Prime Minister MacKenzie King Deane H Russell decided it was time Canada had knives made in Canada instead of only the imported variety and he and Rudolph came to work together to design truly Canadian knives The DH Russel Belt Knife along with other designs won awards around he world and together they went on to design and create three more famous knives The Trout and Bird the Army and Survival Grohmann Knives Limited was formed in 1961 and is still a family run company today

I headed over to the Hector Quay Heritage village and marveled at all of the Clan Tartans that I saw hung on the lampposts that line the street It seemed that they did not repeat themselves but that post after post bore another tartan from another clan

In 1773 a ship called the Hector landed in Brownrsquos Point with 189 Scotsmen from the Highlands

It was the first of many sailings that created a massive immigration and earned Pictou the rightful name of the Birthplace of New Scotland

The interpretation centre is filled with the artifacts and history of the proud highlanders that settled this region

It is also home to a full sized replica of the Hector There is a fully operational blacksmithing and carpenters shop on site too

Sometimes timing is everything and for me mine was off The day I was at the museum they were doing some work on the main mast of the ship and during the time I was there they had temporarily halted the tours of the ship itself for safety reasons

Still I was able to see and learn a lot about my Scottish ancestors

Time was starting to close in on me and so I headed off wishing I had time to spend in

I would have loved to tell them in person how sorry I am that they are closing Apparently the government will not fix the Middle River West Road which made CAArsquos Worst Road list for Atlantic Canada

province I have been here three times now and havenrsquot seen one tenth of what I would like to

I hooked up with fellow CAV member Jason at the Canso Causeway Irving the weather had begun to turn a bit it was becoming overcast so we high tailed it for the Ferry at Sydney We rode pretty steady only stopping once for fuel

We got in a little bit early and so we parked the bikes at Tim Hortonrsquos so the gals from the Cape Breton Saddlebags would know I was around and we walked across the street to the A amp K Lick-A-Chick for some of their amazing chicken

We sat outside to eat and low and behold about 10 minutes after we were finished the gals started rolling in We walked over to greet them and then some of the gang from the CVFR PEI showed up and before you knew it there were about 30 of us in the parking lot

I got Rita out of her saddlebag and we took a ton of photos we had some laughs and before you knew it I had to go I needed to be at the ferry 2 hours before departure

Jason and the Saddlebags rode me to the ferry and with a few waves and honks they were gone and I was in a line of about a dozen bikes all waiting to take the ferry to Newfoundland and that my friends is where we will pick it up next week

I want to thank the guys and dolls of 2 CAV Sue Cole and Joe Gregoire and all of the people who did so much to make my time in their province as wonderful as it was

Everyone truly understood that I wanted to ride like a local and experience and feel their province the way they do and man oh man did I ever experience the warmth the hospitality and the amazing history and landsseascapes

All I could think of as I waited in line for that ferry was the song Farwell to Nova Scotia and it played over and over and over in my headhellip

I must be honest and say that it does not surprise me how terribly you were treated by the Police Chief of this City For such a small community I find it very alarming that some people in service to residents appear to frequently forget their place and that is that they are public servants Indeed the Chief of Police must enforce the law but he overstepped his bounds when he contravened the Police Services Act RSO 1990 In denying you to participate as a club in the Remembrance Day Community Parade I believe that he contravened ldquoThe Declaration of Principlesrdquo Point 1 which declares that he must enact the principal of the importance of safeguarding the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the Human Rights Code Saying that you cannot participate given you attire seems to mirror other situations where people have been discriminated against given their dress

As a citizen of this community I was very embarrassed to learn how the Police Chief of Kawartha Lakes treated your group on Remembrance Day I do not understand how an individual in his position would have unilateral and make final judgement that your club members are not property attired to participate in the parade I understand that you were told that if you marched then his police constables would not participate By placing you in this predicament I believed that he breached his sworn duty to protect you rights under the Charter Although he may have personal thoughts on your attire those personal views should not have come forward in denying you your right It appears that the line between what he personally believes and what is legal under the law is one in which he was unable to manage clearly By stepping down your club showed respect to a Chief that was not entitled to have it on that dayIf anything the decision should have come from the Royal Canadian Legion as they are the party who is hosting the event We all respect them and on a day of such great importance I do not believe anyone would challenge their wishes I am not aware if their opinions were heard or acted upon

As an individual who lives in the community it quite embarrassing that the Chief of Kawartha Lakes caused a situation where news of his exploits was broadcast across this land He brought shame to the local police service and the community in general This gentleman does not show the signs of a peace officer but a police enforcer

I can only guess that maybe this Police

Chief may have a narcissistic complex or a person that is very much unaware of what is happening beyond the boundaries of this city There are bike clubs all across this nation and most of them are formed to do go for communities Many of those bikers are police constables lawyers engineers or people who love riding their bikes while at the same time undertaking endeavours to help foundations or communities

This Chief appears to be out of touch as the TPS and the OPP lead hundreds of bikers just like you on rides for charity

Maybe this is a good time to relieve this man of his duties or even better have the OPP look after policing in this entire region as is done in many other communities in Ontario I do not feel comfortable with a person who has great power and is incapable of knowing right from wrong Those are my thoughts but it is for others to form their opinions But I do not think that what happened should not just fade

Women in the Wind

I am interested in starting up a Women in the Wind (WITW) motorcycle chapter within Regina for lady riders and looking to find others who may have interest in joining as well To read about the history of WITW and see where other chapters are located the official national website is here httpwwwwomeninthewindorg This national motorcycle club has several chapters across Canada including Saskatoon Membership is open to all lady riders all makes and models of motorcycles and all levels of experience This is more about a bunch of ladies uniting to ride and socialize together

There is often an annual provincial rally and like this year (just last weekend) a bi-annual event that hosted over 200 lady riders from across Canada and the USA in Kannaskis AB at a first class eventconference Membership within WITW does not have to be exclusive you can belong to other riding groups and clubs as well If there are enough women who are interested in finding out how this would work whatrsquos involved etchellip we will set a date to connect over coffeedrinks and discuss Expressing interest by no means commits you to joining the club

It is an exhilarating time to build bikes Everything is popular right now Fat tire long bikes are being built along side stripped down bobbers baggers cafes and the back street low buck choppers and tricked out trikes

If you want it there is a thriving aftermarket available for it People lifestyle culture and counter culture mashed together creating a unique scene If you are living with blinders on you truly are missing out If the Rockers and Mods can get along a host events together you should be able to pull that stick out of your behind and toast to a great riding season with a Winger with a Squid

Embrace this time Soon a new fad will come along while others will fade to memories Take the time to build to create even if it is only a new friendship

Shopping local means something very different to me than it does

to a lot of people

Shopping local means something different to me than it does to most of the people who read my blog or our newspaper simply because of the geographical location I live in

I am a rider and tend to whenever possible shop with other riders who own small businesses sadly all of them live hours and hours away from me but that does not stop me from supporting them

I have always been a big proponent for shopping locally and in the rider community for me at least that means shopping with small businesses on line

I do a ton of my shopping on line because for me it makes sense

I live in Grande Prairie Alberta and I am at least 5 hours by car to any other major centre where there is choice and selection

In the GP region we have 2 Honda and Victory dealers in the area 1 Yamaha dealer and one

Harley Shop Other than that there are no small business to buy gifts from if you are a rider looking for gifts for other riders

When I go into these shops to gift shop I seldom find what I am looking for Its no fault of theirs either they can only carry so much stock and a lot of the gear they carry is directed at the dirt rider because motocross is huge here as is quadding Thats who their primary customer base is

The one Victory shop deals in KTM and snow machines - so there is very little for me there

The other is 40 K away and deals also in Honda and snow machines - again other than service there is nothing for gifts for someone like me there The same is true of the Yamaha shop they deal a lot in snow machines boats and quads I use their services for things like tire changes but beyond that there isnt a lot there for me either

The Harley shop has lots of gift ideas however a lot of the people I buy for do not ride Harleys and dont really want branded products for gifts

There are no local aftermarket shops no leather shops that are geared to the rider no gift shops that carry rider specific gift itemsso

The bulk of my shopping is done by visiting the shops of the little guys on line people I know or have met while on bike trips and I liked their product ranges

As a small business owner whose kid is all grown up I dont spend a ton on Christmas one good present for hubby and small gifts for the daughter and her husband along with stocking stuffers for everyone The rest of the gifts I buy tend to be stocking stuffers or smaller gifts for the people who work for and with me

I support small businesses in the riding community like Grizzly Leather West Coast Roar Leather amp Steel artists like Mark Mullen and Gypsys Art Ken the Glassdude or just to mention a few

For me - that is shopping locally even though Gypsy is in Red Deer AB Grizzly is in Calgary AB West Coast Roar is in Mill Bay BC on Vancouver Island Leather amp Steel is in Fruitvale BC Ken is in Regina SK and Mark Mullen is in Keswick ON

I love on line shopping for a number of reasons

I can shop at 5 in the morning when I am taking my first coffee break of the dayThere are no crowds to battle and I find the customer service to be excellent with most small businesses who have a presence on line

I like the fact that I can cruise through these web sites and if I am not sure of fit or style I can call them talk to them send measurements etc

Because they know me they can help me out

My Two Bits Worth

If they dont have what I am looking for they can generally get it for me and have it drop shipped for me or to me so while Canada Post can be expensive it affords me the luxury of supporting my community by shopping with the rider owned businesses that I have come to love

The other upside is that I dont have to spend hours in a vehicle driving in winter conditions - so using Canada Post actually becomes more financially viable for me too not to mention safer

Lots of times when I call these small businesses I find out about other products that are similar to what I am looking for or they tell me about great deals they have

Online shopping is not for everyone but for this Northerner it makes sense I get what I need from people I like people who are members of my community the riding community

I do what I can to support the little guys - the people who like me are working at their passion because after all small business is the backbone of this great nation of ours

You too can shop locally with in the riding community and support businesses that you like that are miles and provinces awayhellipshopping local by long distancehellip

Sacred Obligation

The Canadian Veterans Advocacy (CVA) uses the term Sacred Obligation when speaking to or describing the Government of Canadarsquos responsibilities to Canadarsquos Sons and Daughters who have been wounded or injured as a consequence of their service at home and abroad

I am often asked what is the definition of the Sacred Obligation

In the context of military service ldquoSacred ldquo is a very special connotation and predicates great level respect for the living life time sacrifice of the wounded and those who have offered the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of the nation

Legislatively the Sacred Obligation was first defined by Sir Robert Borden through special provisions in the Pension Act acknowledged the life time of pain and suffering Canadian disabled veterans experienced after returning from the battles of Passchendaele Amiens and Vimy Ridge The standard of respect has been perpetuated and enhanced by successive Canadian parliamentrsquos who understood the uniqueness the ultra-

dangerous environment and patriotic sacrifice of those who have sworn allegiance to the Canada and the impact this sacrifice has borne upon their families

When a Canadian Citizen takes the Oath of AllegianceAffirmation when joining the Canadian Armed Forces it is implicitly understood that the threshold from the comfort Canadian civilian society has been crossed and they have pledged their lives to defend the principles upon this great nation has been founded The Oath that the 18 year-old CAF recruit swears to is very similar to those taken by the Prime Minister of Canada Parliamentarians Senators and Chief Justices of the Supreme Court of Canada indeed this places those that serve this nation in some very prestigious company

However there is one caveat and CAF personnel are the only citizens of Canada who are eligible

Unlimited Liability aka the Sacred Obligation

Unlimited LiabilitySacred Obligation is the ultimate demonstration of trust between nation and those they would send to warpeace a concord underwritten in blood inclusive of ultimate sacrifice so willingly volunteered in-trust to the People of Canada Unlimited Liability and the Sacred Obligation extends to the soldiers family their mother father husband wife children all acutely aware of the consequences national service entails all who share concern for the their loved ones during service and beyond when

they have been released to our communities due to wounds or injuries

The people entrusted with upholding the Sacred Obligation those who bear the solemn authority to put the soldier in Harmsrsquo Way serve the nation as our parliamentarians Since World War 1 Canadians have deployed many times into the vortex of violence tens-of-thousands of valiant men and women sacrificed their lives for the nation and many many more were wounded or injured They as did those who deployed to Afghanistan served this nation with the implicit recognition of the Sacred Obligation should they be injured or for their dependents if they die in the service of Canada

The Sacred Obligation has been embraced by successive governments since WW1 until in 2006 the Harper Government implemented the New Veterans Charter (NVC) and in doing so abandoned its Sacred Obligation to those who would serve at a time when Canadarsquos military would for the first time since the historic battles of Korea be called to war 150 valiant Canadian men and women have paid the ultimate sacrifice since 2006 over fifteen hundred have been wounded during Prime Minister Harperrsquos stewardship of the war

How does one define the Sacred Obligation to the wounded to the mothers fathers widows and children of the fallen those who have been awarded the Memorial Cross in recognition of their sacrifice Just how does the New Veterans Charter discriminate against those who serve today those who



have sacrificed limbs minds and souls to the nation How do we measure ones level of sacrifice on a pain and suffering perspective just how worthy is the traumatic amputation of a legs an arms a mind when the Sacred Obligation established through decades of parliamentary respect has been abandoned at a time of war

The answer is clear precedence has been set

Let us compare Major Ortona who is catastrophically injured in Italy 1943 and Major Khandahar who suffered the same life altering injuries when struck down in battle at the height of Operation Medusa in Southern Afghanistan 2006

Both men suffer explosive amputation of their legs severe internal wounds including the loss of their testicles significant hearing loss-tinitus brain system injuries and as a consequence of their ordeal severe PTSD and depression

Major Ortona is medically released and returns to his wife and two young children He lives for sixty years but requires long tern care at Sunnybrook Veterans hospital during the last fifteen due to his injuries and his wifersquos inability to provide home care

The nation recognized the life of suffering Major Ortona endured and fulfilled its Sacred Obligation to him and his family until death and beyond Special Pain and Suffering provisions within the Pension Act accorded Major Ortona a monthly pension unto0 death A supplementary pension was also accorded

to his wife with the recognition of her sacrifice and the impact of providing care to double amputee with mental issues bears upon her life and future Small pensions were provided to Major Ortonarsquos two children and when they sought higher education financial assistance was available

When his wife could no longer care for him Veterans Affairs Canada ensured he had a room at Sunnybrook Veterans Hospital where he would life out his days in comfort and with the level of dedicated care required When Major Ortona preceded his wife his widow was accorded half his VAC pension and eligibility to VIP services Over the course of his life Major Ortona would be provided close to two million dollars tax free in recognition of the life time of pain and suffering he had endured

Major Khandahar sustained the same catastrophic injuries The Sacred Obligation now abandoned does not include the life time financial security inherent with the Pension Act monthly provisions instead he is awarded a lump sum award of 250 thousand dollars By the time he retires moves buysmodifies a home and the family adjusts to his physical and mental disabilities there is little left His wife who fears for his life ndashsuicide- and must stay home is not as was Major Ortonarsquos wife provided a small pension in recognition of her sacrifice Nor when Major Ortona precedes her will there be any pension to share of VIP services to ease her financial burden during her twilight years

When Major Ortona required Long Term Care there was no Sunnybrook Veterans Hospital to care for him the obligation been long abandoned to veterans who did not serve in WW2 or Korea Major Ortonarsquos children receive nothing there is no supplementary pension to ensure their care is not affected by the financial discord that many disabled affected families confront daily Assistance for university or college education is non existent

The disparity in respect between the services provided when the Sacred Obligation was embraced and the standard applied to todayrsquos modern war wounded through the New Veterans Charter can only be described as obscene to accord one standard of service of a veteran of one war yet not another is a glaring demonstration of the repercussions to Canadarsquos wounded when a government looses its moral compass and abandons the Sacred Obligation to those they have sent to war

The Canadian Veterans Advocacy does not dispute that there are positive qualities within the New Veterans Charter andor Bill C-55 indeed the harmonization approach that we have submitted reflects the need of incorporating the positive benefits of both programs into one effective mechanism capable of serving veterans of all eras equally and without discrimination The disparity of the Lump Sum Award provisions when compared to the Fulfillment of the Sacred Obligation via the Pension Act while not the singular issue in requirement of redress



must be a priority The nationrsquos obligation to Canadarsquos most seriously wounded veterans referenced by Veterans Ombudsman Parentrsquos last report is not being fulfilled as such our duty our Sacred Obligation is clear

We must unite behind the wounded who having no recourse or support from the traditional veterans organizations have resorted to the courts to seek justice What do they seek They seek the same standard of respect that Major Ortona myself and thousands of Canadian veterans have been accorded for pain and suffering as a consequence of our service

They seek only fulfillment of the Sacred Obligation they believed to exist when they were wounded no more no less

No other option is acceptable Veterans organizations that do not support this position (Equitas) particularly formal stakeholders such as the Royal Canadian Legion and major organizations represented through the Legionrsquos Veterans Consultation Group have not embraced the Sacred Obligation and are championing meager enhancements to the Lump Sum Award to a comparable level that someone injured on the job in Ontario would receive

This position does not reflect or respect the sacrifice of our Afghanistan War wounded or the very pillars on which the Royal Canadian Legion has been built The standard of care they have fought so hard through multiple generations of Legion leadership to ensure the obligation was met and provided to World

War 2 and Korean War veterans is not being accorded to those who fight today

One veteran One standard

The wounded abandoned by government and veterans stakeholders alike have united and with no other alternative have been forced to seek redress through the courts Their quest directly addresses the Harper Governmentrsquos abeyance of the Sacred Obligation an obligation this nation stood proudly behind for nearly a century an obligation negated at the height of the most vicious combat this nation has experienced since the Korean War

Is Major Khandaharsrsquos national sacrifice no less worthy than Major Ortonarsquos

Did they not both suffer the same catastrophic wounds traumatic amputation of the legs testicles a lifetime of PTSD and depression with all the ugly soul and family destroying horrors they bring to the veteran and hisher family

I would suggest that their sacrifice on behalf of Canada is equal that national precedence has been established with the blood courage and great sacrifice of our forefathers

I would suggest that this is and must be the only standard applied to those who suffer the same consequences of war today

Struggling with High-Speed Curves

Irsquove been riding for many years mostly big cruisers I presently have a Harley-Davidson Ultra Irsquove ridden all kinds of roads and have had the occasional close call Something happened to me recently that I canrsquot explain I took a trip to the Dragon up in Tennessee and met up with a few friends I hadnrsquot seen in many years My friends took off at a pretty good pace through the 318 curves in 11 miles They didnrsquot appear to be going too fast but as I tried to keep up with them I quickly realized I was going too fast I soon began running wide in the turns crossing the double line and at one point coming close to a head on collision

My friends left me far behind Since they were no longer in sight I thought I had slowed down enough but I still felt very uncomfortable and just couldnrsquot seem to pick the right lines around the curves I seemed to be struggling with the handlebars everything was a major effort After that ride I find that Irsquom scared to death on just about all winding roads I have to go so slow in order not to panic that vehicles behind me are tailgating me and I have to pull over to the side of the road Could it be Irsquove forgotten how to ride after all these years

Name withheld per writerrsquos requestI believe what happened is instead of riding your own ride ie riding at your own comfortable pace you tried to keep up with your fellow riders whose skill level is apparently higher than yours

The more you tried to keep up with them the less technique you were apparently using In other words instead of looking far ahead of the turn you began looking towards the double yellow line Since we know that the motorcycle goes wherever you look you began steering right towards the yellow line

As you got closer to the yellow line you began looking at the oncoming traffic and began riding towards the very obstacle you didnrsquot want to hit Even after you slowed down you were so tense you forgot about counter-steering

If the bike was leaning to the right and had to transition back to the left instead of pushing on the left grip Irsquod be willing to bet your right hand was holding the bar and preventing you from proper counter-steering Since it felt like you werenrsquot able to steer your motorcycle properly you tensed up even further which then caused the problem to get worse and worse Later on when you were riding by

yourself you began doubting your abilities which caused you to ride in an overly timid manner Thus the low speeds and the feeling of panic and stress were still there Herersquos what I suggest to get over these new found fears

Find a large empty parking lot mark off a couple of 100rsquo diameter circles in the shape of a figure eight Place some markers at 1200 Orsquoclock 300 orsquoclock 900 orsquoclock and 600 orsquoclock Get up to a speed that will allow you to counter-steer that would be anything above 15 mph Focus well ahead of the motorcycle if you start at 600 orsquoclock in the circle focus on 300 orsquoclock

As you begin heading towards 300 orsquoclock snap your head and eyes and look towards 1200 orsquoclock If yoursquore circling to the left remember to push forward on the left grip the harder you push on the grip the more the bike will lean As you approach the 600 orsquoclock point yoursquoll be ready to transition to the right Turn your head and eyes and look at 300 orsquoclock then 600 orsquoclock etc Remember to look far ahead of your motorcycle Vary your speed you should be able to perform the figure eight at speeds of at least 25 mph with a little practice

Once you feel comfortable leaning and transitioning the bike and looking well ahead under controlled conditions head for your favorite winding road hopefully one with very little traffic and practice the techniques thereThere are also many high speed training courses around the Country many of which cater to cruisers that Irsquom sure yoursquoll find beneficial The only way to get over your fears is to face them and overcome them step by step

The WWC Battlefield Bike Ride 2014 will raise funds for PTSD service animal programs The ride will last 5 - 15 June Juno Beach - Vimy

Versatility and quality make Heat Demon by Symtec a winner

Most of us have experienced what it is like to be down to the bone cold when riding and how dangerous that can be

And most of us have tried out all sorts of things to stay warm and extend our riding season I have tested a lot of gear some products I have loved and others not so much

In the ldquoI love itrdquo category is the heated vest and foot warmers from Heat Demon by Symtec

Lets talk about the vest first

The vest is made of water resistant Taslan fabric so its lightweight durable and very malleable

It is an adjustable vest with 3 side zippers that offer multiple configurations and stretch fabric inserts that allow for the most comfortable and snug fit

Hence why there are only two sizes available for purchase - Small to XL and XL - 4X

The beauty of this system is that if you gain a little weight or loose a little wait you do not necessarily need to go out and buy another vest

The heating elements are flat made from high tech carbon fibre and they are removable which makes the vest easily washable

I dont know about you but that has been one of my complaints of some of the other heated products Ive owned - you can wash them just not easily

Because the flat heating elements are in pockets inside the front chest and the back of the vest there are no wires to rub or chafe and there is very little bulk to the vest an added bonus is the heating pads dont draw a lot of power

The elastic at the waist helps keep the vest in place and prevents it from riding up it also helps to trap the heat in the upper part of your core

The back heating pad does extend below the elastic waist band by about 2 inches

The vest also has 2 decent sized zippered pockets on the outside and two Velcro sealed extra large pockets on the inside

Now I have the battery operated configuration of this vest so the left inside pocket is already in use by the battery and therefore not available for storage

Yes you read right - battery operated

The Lithium Ion battery that charges the vest will offer you about 7 hours of heat depending on the heat setting you run your gear at When I was in Ireland last month we had one day that was so wet and windy and we got so cold that we stopped at a pub for hot chocolate and to warm up

I took my Heat Demon vest and foot warmers out of the side bag and put them on in the parking lot

The rain had stopped and everyone was divesting themselves of bandannas and gloves etc and hunting for dry replacementsRunning vest and foot warmers on 4 - the second highest temperature range I was warming up nicely and by the time we got seated in the pub I was no longer shivering I was getting some funny looks and comments as to why I wasnt freezing like the rest and so I told them about the Heat Demon vest and foot warmers I had just put on

Well I was ribbed pretty heartily but as I expressed to them I am a Northern Canadian

rider and I come prepared The ribbing turned to more burning comments like Can I try that thing on (They were referring to the vest)

As we geared up to head out I put the vest on high and had consistent heat for the better part of 4 hours using pretty much just the vest alone I am not sure how much battery time you loose running the foot warmers at the same time as the vest as I unplugged the foot warmers after about a half hour My feet were not wet and so once the chill was off of me I just unplugged them (Ill get to the foot warmers in a bit)

The heat this vest puts out is so nice and consistent with no hot spots like you find in some of the wired vests



The Battery Operated Vest SHINES for its versatility hands down this is one of the best ideas in heated gear that I have seen

You can run a cable to the motorcycle to power the vest just like any other system but if you want to stay warm when you get off your bike you just unplug from the bike and plug into the battery in the left hand inner pocket

If you are riding a bike that is rented or borrowed and does not have a cable installed - no problemyou can stay warm

The battery takes about 5 hours to fully recharge

The heat controllers have clips on them that allow you to clip to your pants pocket or to an outside jacket pocket

You also have the advantage of being able to run two vests off of one controller with the use of a Y-cable you can purchase

The cable that hooks to your motorcycles

battery to power the vest has a dust plug to keep grime and moisture out of the connector when its not in use

The features benefits and quality of this product are simply fabulous

Now Heat Demon by Symtec has put a ton of thought into your pocket book with their designs and offerings too They offer the vests and the assorted cables ampamp controllers to run them in bundles and separately

The foot warmers are ingenious one size fits all you cut them out to match you foot size based on the lines provided for cutting you slide them into your boot and run the cable under your jeans or riding pants they connect to the controller and voila - warm feet There are no wires or bumps no bunching - you hardly know the foot warmers are there except for the warmth emanating from them and the cable that runs up the side of your leg but you get used to that pretty quick

There are three options to the product that I would like to see in the future

1) Have the back heating pad extended by about 2 more inches to warm more of the kidney area

2) Have a jacket option with a heated collar and heated sleeves

3) For the wall charger to have the prongs slide sidewayscollapse for shipping so that it doesnt take so much space to pack or run the risk of breaking a prong or something else in your bag

Id pay extra for all of the above mentioned features

I really really like this vest and the foot warmers

ATLANTICADE 2014 Back In SummersidePEI

(Summerside PE) ndashThe 2013 riding season is all but a memory for most motorcycle enthusiasts across Canada as bikes have gone into hibernation for the next few months

However that hasnrsquot curbed the enthusiasm for many who are already looking ahead to the 2014 season and making plans to attend the Atlanticade Motorcycle Festival Organizers have confirmed the 8th annual edition of the event will take place once again in Summerside PEI from June 27th to July 1st The five day festival will start on a Friday and run through to Tuesday which will coincide with Canada celebrations

ldquoWersquove been getting an ongoing request for dates and location confirmation since the event ended this past summerrdquo said chairman Dale Hicks ldquoThis has been the highest level of interest in the festival this far out from the actual start date Normally people donrsquot start inquiring about information until well into the new calendar year So that is a good sign in

terms of interest in our event for 2014rdquo

This will mark the third straight year the gathering of motorcycle enthusiasts from across North America will converge on Summerside Hicks claims the hosting of the festival on Prince Edward Island has proven to be popular with participants

ldquoEveryone likes to come to PEI in the summertime and of course the scenery hospitality and laid back atmosphere have captured the attention of the motorcycle community Hopefully we can keep the event here for years to comerdquo expressed

Atlanticade ran for five years in New Brunswick before relocating to Prince Edward Island in 2012 Organizers will now be busy for the next few months lining up sponsorship and working on the wide variety of activities that will take place over the course of the five days

Can we just hit the RESET BUTTON alreadyOne of the great things about life is the fact we never know what is around the next curve and for a biker that can invigorating and exciting On the flip side around the next corner could bea trial or adversity to quote a

favorite line of mine from the movie ldquoForest Gumprdquordquo life is like a box of chocolates you never know what yoursquore going to getrdquo

Have you ever planned for a weekend ride and after all the preparations and planning you hit the road with adrenalin pumping and all fired up for a great weekend and things soon just seem to be going sideways on you Maybe itrsquos the weather or perhaps a breakdown of your ride or an issue that has flared up with a co-rider Or maybe before you left home you had an argument with your spouse or teenager and yoursquore just feeling like yoursquod rather not be riding

I have developed the theology in life that itrsquos not what happens to us in our life that matters most but rather how we respond to the things that happen in our life is what is most important

They say experience is a wonderful thing but as we all know experience comes at a cost It just takes some of us longer to figure this

out than others So for me knowing how the lsquomovie endsrsquo I simply stop myself when I realize Irsquom in a situation that is rapidly spinning out of control or going off the rails I hit the ldquoMetaphorical RESET buttonrdquo

Typically I need a little quiet time like an hour or two on my own to rethink my situation assess my options and come up with a game plan as to how I can turn what might be a bad situation into a good one Now I donrsquot want to misrepresent myself as this all-knowing mild mannered person who has life all figured outmdashbut rather I am somebody who after a life-time of making poor choices and displaying socially unacceptable behaviour at times I have learned there is a better way to live life A life that is focused first on God and His ways

Despite having God in my life the trials temptations and challenges are still there I still donrsquot know what is around the next curve but as I seek to live a life worthy of Godrsquos calling hitting the RESET button gets my focus off of me onto others and what is needed to get back on course for my day or weekend

There is a cool verse in our ldquoOwnerrsquos Manual for Liferdquo found in Proverbs 36 ldquoin all your ways submit to him and he will make your paths straightrdquo This godly truth is a promise submit to God seek him and he will straighten out the curves in your life and equip you to handle whatever may come

to the picnic tables The music from the entertainer that had just taken the stage inside was wafting gently around us and we found ourselves singing along and just enjoying

We discussed the various things going on in Yarmouth and decided that we would have lunch at a festival called ldquoA Taste of Yarmouthrdquo

But first we decided a walk along the pier was in order The Yarmouth harbor is filled with ships and boats of all sizes and colors Even in the fog it was impressive

We drove down the street a ways and parked and as we stepped out of Joersquos truck the smells drifting from the tents had a persons mouth watering almost instantly

For $2 you could buy a ticket to have sample sizes of everything from clam chowder to mussels and everything in between I met some of the townrsquos councilors who are appropriately proud of their community and itrsquos offerings and it was nice to have them on hand greeting the public somehow I felt like I was a part of the community because of that

My favorite was the seafood casserole served up by the volunteers of the Acadian Village and the fish cakes that were offered up in the Yarmouth community booth OK I enjoyed the hell out of the mussels toohellip

With bellies full and a bank of fog still hugging the harbor we decided it was time to go for a drive

We headed off to Cape Forchu As we drove we watched the fog roll in and out in and out It made the short drive a little eerie

We went to the Stanley Lobster Company so I could see tanks of lobsters and how they are kept fresh while waiting to be shipped to various restaurants and customers across the country This place is so cool ndash no literally it canrsquot be more than 2-3 degrees inside Big tanks of fresh seawater filled with crates that have lobsters in little cubbyholes with rubber bands on their claws so they canrsquot hurt each other or their handlers all kept very cold

Lobsters metabolisms slow right down in the

cold and so even though they may have been caught a month ago they arenrsquot aging per se We got to see a few monsters ndash 20 pounders that are babied and nurtured because of their monstrous sizes but also because of their unique colors

After our tour of the lobster tanks we walked along the beach to see where the Stanley Lobster Company customers go to eat their magnificent feeds of lobster that are cooked in an out door kitchen Customers have the choice of eating at picnic tables or inside a very small restaurant again located on the beach
