Authentic Chinese Cuisine

The 10th Annual Asian Lunar New Year Dinner is an event dedicated to celebrate the several Lunar New Years across Asia. This year, the Asper School of Business will be celebrating this special holiday on February 5th at Kum Koon Garden, one of the most authentic Chinese restaurants in the city. The event will be showcasing sev-eral Asian cultures and their Lunar New Year festivities. It is the perfect opportunity to immerse yourself in Asian cul-ture while enjoying authentic Chinese cuisine, traditional cultural performances, and impressive presentations.

Did you know…In Canada and many Western countries, we use the Gregorian calendar, meaning that every year, there are 365 days (and 366 every 4 years). Most of the oldest calendars, however, are lunar calendars, based on the time between one moon and the next. Although the Gregorian calendar is recognised and adopted inter-nationally, Lunar New Year is still one of the most important celebrations in nearly 20 different cultures across Asia between January and May, including China, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Tibet, and Vietnam. This year, the East and Central Asian Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival, is celebrating the Year of the Sheep, the 8th animal in the Chinese zodiac, heralding a calmer atmosphere and unleashing creativity.

Right now we all have something in common, a chance to do better than last year. Ancient Babylonians promised their gods that they would repay their debts; Roman’s would make promises to their god Janus. The knights in Medieval times took the peacock vow, reafirm-ing their commitment to chivalry. The concept of making personal improvements in the New Year dates back thousands of years across the globe; yet people still fail to accomplish these goals the majority of the time. Here are some strategies you could use to succeed in becoming an im-proved person this year that I found on the internet.

A lot of people here at Asper who will read this article are probably already close to per-fect, but there is almost always room for improvement. As you proceed through 2015 I encourage you to reflect upon the goals you set last year thinking about how you achieved them, and things you wish you had done differently. When making New Years resolutions, make sure your goals are SMART. That is, Specific, Measurable, Attain-able, Relevant, and time-bound. You will learn more about this in you organizational behavior class. If there is one thing you could take away from this article let it be this: the biggest hurdle to accomplishing goals is getting started. University life can be overwhelming. Being or-ganized and breaking down your goals into concrete steps really helps to get the process going. Now go out there and get those grades, lose those pounds, and make those connections etc. Good luck!

Become a PRO.

Entering the CPA certification program is part of your path to a rewarding and engaging career at the highest levels of business and accounting. As a University of Manitoba student, you can get a head start on this great opportunity to open doors in your career.

Now for the obvious question – what’s the best way to enter the program? Although everyone’s situation is a little bit different, here are some answers to common questions. This information will help you go from “good” to “PRO!”

What are the eligibility requirements?

A Canadian Bachelor’s degree in any subject is the only requirement for eligibility to the CPA Prerequisite Education Program (CPA PREP). CPA recommends obtaining a 120 credit hour degree.

For direct entry from university into the CPA Professional Education Program (CPA PEP) upon graduation, there are specific courses you’ll need to take during your post-secondary education. This listing of CPA prerequisites at the University of Manitoba is available in your Career Development Centre, or at go.CPAmb.ca/courselistings.

If you’re graduating before June 2017, you’re also able to qualify via CA, CMA, or CGA prerequisites. Please note that if you want to qualify with one of these previous prerequisite lists, you will have to meet the requirements of one of them in full. Additionally, CPA PREP transfers are based off the CPA prerequisite listing only.

Module Zero is necessary for all students to complete, but studied content will vary based on your educational history.

What is Module Zero?

Module Zero is designed for those who have met the entrance requirements for CPA PEP, but must now add to their knowl-edge before registering for Core Module 1 in CPA PEP. Module Zero is also beneficial where exemptions have been granted for post-secondary courses and there are gaps in the coverage. You will gain access to Module Zero when you successfully register in the CPA PEP program. Visit cpawsb.ca to learn more about Module Zero delivery and to see which topics you may need to cover!

When should I register for the CPA program?

That is based on when you plan to enter the CPA certification program:

For those tracking towards CPA PREP, visit go.CPAmb.ca’s CPA PREP section to see upcoming dates for CPA PREP, and to get started on your transcript evaluation.

For those tracking towards direct entry into CPA PEP, head to cpaweb.ca and find the Schedule link in the sidebar. Look ahead to see the Core Module 1 offering that you wish to enter, and note the registration period for it.

Be sure to leave ample time for yourself to complete any necessary Module Zero topics, and feel free to get a head start on apply-ing in your final semester. Just go to cpawsb.ca/ApplicationProcess to create your account and begin transitioning to the PROs!

Want to become a CPA and raise your PROfile? Visit go.CPAmb.ca to find out more, come to an information session or see our CPA booth, a regular sight at career fairs and in the Drake Centre! You can also contact your University of Manitoba CPA repre-sentative, who can put you on track to for a solution tailored to you:

Going from Good to PRO!

Asper alumni - chris thorneGrad Year/ Major2014, Accounting

What are you doing now?Currently I work at KPMG, a Big 4 Accounting Firm in Winnipeg. My role is a 2nd Year Staff Accountant in the Audit and Business Advisory Services area – and I can say, truthfully, that I love my job. I am challenged every day with what is given to me, I am supported by my coworkers and management and truly no question is a stupid question. I have a wide range of clients, from bil-lion dollar public companies, construction firms, mining companies, and not for profit organizations. This allows my work to be continuously changing, and I never get bored.

What is a normal day like for you?A normal day would be hard to define as I don’t have normal days, I am con-stantly going to different clients. KPMG is located in the Richardson building, but am likely only in the office for 2 months of the year. As an auditor, we go to the client to perform our job as it is easier to work with the client in performing our audit procedures.

So, a normal day would be arriving to wherever I’m working, grabbing coffee with the team, and settling down to work. I’ll answer some emails, possibly check Twitter to see if Foster Lyle has posted any annoying comments about Survivor then get into my work.

Auditing, to most, is boring, so I won’t bore you with auditing procedures. I can say though, that one of the reasons why I enjoy my work, is that I work with a bunch of solid beauties. While we work, all day long, we laugh. The team that I work with, by far, is the reason why I love my job – it’s not uncommon for me to have tears in my eyes from laughing so hard on a weekly basis. But after work, I get home, have dinner with my wife, and will usually work on my CPA Designation. I always make time for the gym, I believe it’s imperative for people to stay both mentally and physically fit. I find my work/sleep/social life suffers if I don’t let off some steam at the gym. Additionally, the nature of a day job is a lot of sitting, so it’s good to get the blood flowing.

What were you like as a student and what were your most memorable moments at Asper? As an Asper student I would say I was average, I was active in the CSA and a STAG, I would rather spend my time in the fishbowl as opposed to a classroom – and I like to drink beer. And rum. And vodka. And free wine that’s on the tables at Banquet Dinners.

My most memorable moments at Asper would be pretty cliché and involve things that have likely been said in the past. Memorable moments include winning second place in the GAAPS case competition with Foster Lyle, Leah Inglis and Jenna Kissock; being a member of the CSA Executive as the Di-rector of Corp Relations with a solid team of beauties; and of course (cliché) sitting in one of Sean Mac’s classes – the guy always kept it fresh, interesting, and hilarious – take more than just Intro HR with the guy, you won’t regret it.

What would your advice be to students in Asper now and those transitioning to their new careers? To current students, get involved, with whatever you can, and as much as you can. You will meet people, learn social skills, build a network (surprisingly important in the real world) and have an amazing time. I have found, in my opinion, that businesses are more interested in you as a person, as opposed to your GPA – can you carry on a conversation with an average person?

To those transitioning into their new careers, don’t look back, enjoy your job, and if you don’t enjoy it, quit and move on. Oh – and meet your Asper friends for lunch/ coffee/ drinks often. Asper is a small community and you will see old classmates regularly.
