*** A Note from the Pastor ***

My Brothers and Sisters,

Our Feast Day is here!!! Happy Feast of St. Michael and Happy Feast of the Archangels! What does today tell us about our Church? While our Church has only had the name of St. Michael’s for about twelve years...it was the community here in Dunseith that came together to choose this saint!

We often forget that the Church on Earth is Military! The Church in heaven is called “the Church, Triumphant”. The Church in purgatory is called “the Church, Sufferring”. We on Earth are called “The Church, Militant”. Why? Because we are in constant battle...both within ourselves and in our world!

St. Michael was named Prince of the Church...and Military Leader of our Church! To be named after St. Michael, we are calling ourselves WARRIORS!!! We are reminding ourselves of the battle, the fight, and the war that we are in. I also think it is appropriate that almost all of our parish are natives and this name alone is a call back to the noble native origin of being Warriors for God!!! Today...may we be proud of our Church and proud of our name! May we fight for God and with God...led by our Captain….St. Michael! Amen!!!

Sunday Reading Insights

“Of the many angels who make their appearance on the pages of the Old Testament, only three are identified by name: Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael; only Michael and Gabriel appear in the New Testament. In the Book of Daniel, Michael is called “one of the chief princes” (10:13) or “the great prince, guardian of your people” (12:1), and in the New Testament epistle by Jude (9), Michael is identified as “archangel,” and Revelation (12:7) depicts him as leading the good angels in battle against Satan, with the result that Satan and his minions lose their place in Heaven. Gabriel is likewise mentioned in the Book of Daniel (8:16; 9:21), but he is better known as the divine messenger who announces to Zechariah the birth of John the Baptist (Luke 1:13–20), and to Mary that she is to be the Mother of God (Luke 1:26–37). Raphael, however, appears only in the book of Tobit, where he identifies himself as “one of the seven angels who enter and serve before the Glory of the Lord” (12:15), and says that he was sent by God to cure Tobit’s blindness (12:14) and to guide his son Tobiah on his journey. The three archangels are commemorated together on September 29, because on this day, according to the Hieronymian Martyrology (about 450), the basilica of St. Michael on the Salarian Way, north of Rome, was dedicated .” (Taken from Saints and Feasts of the Liturgical Year, Pgs. 206-207)
