HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman

god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the

world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god,

Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the

Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star

Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.

Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.

We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in

our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

The Anvil, Issue 260, is the monthly newsletter of

the USS Hephaestus, NCC-2004, of Starfleet, The

International Star Trek Fan Association. All terms

and phrases from Star Trek are owned by

Paramount Pictures Corporation, a division of

Paramount Communications and all rights are

reserved.

Greetings, Boy has the time flown. Seems like it was just April and I was doing the April Anvil. This month we are going to see “Star Trek into Darkness”. Look for my review of the movie in this Anvil. Caution don’t read it if you don’t want spoilers.

Also at the end of the month is the Alabama Phoenix Festival. The festival looks like it is shaping up to be bigger and better then last year. Colin Ferguson is going to be there. Mr. Ferguson was the sheriff in the TV show Eureka. I am as excited to meet him as I was Adam Baldwin last year. I will review the convention in June’s Anvil. I would also ask that if you want to submit your own review of the Star Trek movie or any movie please email it to the email address below. I will include it in future issues.

Hope to see you at the movies.

As always see you around the ship, Capt. MarkAdam Miller [email protected]

I am sitting here looking at my calendar: it’s May the 11th. The year is almost half over! Where has it gone? It’s like time has speeded up. I was told years ago that time does just that as you age. Can it be true? I don’t feel that old. Maybe I have just slowed down. Sorry I’ve been out of the loop recently. I’ve been dealing with IBS and several other issues.

Have you heard that we are going to see the new Star Trek movie together for our social in May? I think the date is May 18th but check the list for definite information. I can’t wait to see it. The previews look awesome. Also, on other ship news, our annual Captain’s Cookout is coming up in July, on the third Saturday. As always, there will be games, DVDs to watch, and good food. Festivities usually start at 2:00 pm. By the way, you can bring your own steak burgers, or whatever and drinks and snacks will be provided. There will be more information later. Pete should be posting details to the list soon. Finally, there’s information that Disney will be producing more Star Wars movies. That’s exciting. Supposedly, Disney has contacted the three original stars, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill and is talking with them about the planned trilogy. I would love to see those three in new Star Wars movies. Hopefully, Disney won’t choose to go with younger actors. Well, that’s it for this month. See you at the Star Trek movie.

April 13, 2013 Social-

The social was a fast, busy affair. We had a nice amount of food eaten. We watched Men in Black III and Ghostbusters 1&2. Several games where played. Upstairs, several people tried the game Fluxx in several different versions (Martian, Star and Pirate). Also several video games where played in the front room (Minecraft, Just Dance and Sims). Downstairs, we held the Texas Hold’em Poker game with Denby winning and Mike coming in second. After the poker game Pete taught us a new game call Dice Farmer (http://www.impactminiatures.net/KickStarter/DiceFarmer_Rulesheet.pdf). We played several rounds. The first winner was my wife Brenda. Both Danny and I ordered dice online so that we could play at home. If you are an old D&D player like Pete then you probably have enough dice to play this game. If not then you can go to EAI and get 150 dice for a good price. The children also played down by the creek and tracked mud into the house.

Attendance: 25 people.

Personnel Updates:

If you have any news or accomplishments you would like to share with the group please email them to me at: [email protected]. Also your personal updates can give your Captain added info to help get you recognition and an award at summit for your accomplishments.

SSttaarrfflleeeett MMaarriinnee CCoorrppss Greetings,

The 654th MSG is looking for members. There is a completely different set of Academy schools for those trying to get

the Boothby awards. There is no pressure in joining. There are two categories: Active which means all ranks will be

Marine ranks, and Reserve which mean you stay primary Fleet and only use Marine ranks when doing marine stuff.

Contact Major General Neil Yawn if you are interested or have questions.

Star Trek Into Darkness: Review (by MarkAdam Miller)

I was able to see Star Trek into Darkness at a pre-showing on Wednesday May 8, 2013. I will try and

not give too much plot away, but I do warn that there may be spoilers in this article.

The movie is picking up sometime after the first Abrams Star Trek movie. I either missed how long it

has been since the Nero incident or they just gave the sense that Kirk has been in command of the ship for

awhile. The movie starts off with an action scene and doesn’t stop till the end of the movie. All the cast from

the first film are back with most giving a good interpretation of the original actors. My favorite is Karl Urban

as Bones. He channels a little of DeForrest Kelley but he makes the part his own also. I like Anton Yelchin as

Chekov better than last time as he was not as over the top with his Russian accent.

The storyline is original with a few barrowed scenes from previous Star Trek Movies. I like that it gives

a nod to the other movies but also does it own thing. I was on the edge of my seat for most of the movie. I am

looking forward to Star Trek 3.

Klingon can now be translated with Bing

Not sure how to say something in Klingon. Bing Translator comes to the rescue. You can now translate

English into Klingon or any of other of the 41 languages in their translator program. Bing, in partnership with

Paramount, is offering Klingon on its web base translator and Bing’s Windows Phone App. The translator will

translate a phrase using the regular letters of the alphabet or you can set it for Klingon (Kronos) that will use the

Klingon Alphabet. This was developed by Eric Andeen, a Microsoft engineer who speaks fluent Klingon, and

Marc Okrand, a linguist and Star Trek consultant of the Klingon language. Marc Okrand originally fleshed out

the Klingon language using words James Doohan, Scotty, created for the Klingons for Star Trek: The Motion

Picture.

IDW Star Trek into Darkness tie-ins

Really like Star Trek into Darkness and are into graphic novels, then you need to check out IDW Star

Trek into Darkness tie-ins. The past few months IDW published a 4 issue series Star Trek Countdown to

Darkness. The story is by the writers Roberto Orci and Mike Johnson of Star Trek Countdown which was the

best selling prequel to J.J. Abrams 2009 blockbusters Star Trek. Star Trek Countdown to Darkness is a good

read adding a few other characters form the Star Trek Universe. On May 29th, IDW will have Star Trek after

Darkness also written by Mike Johnson and overseen by Roberto Orci. It will be illustrated by Erfan Fagar.

Star Trek After Darkness picks up right after the movie to continue the story of our heroes, Kirk and Spock.
