HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman

god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the

world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god,

Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the

Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star

Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.

Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.

We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in

our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

The Anvil, Issue 272, is the monthly newsletter of

the USS Hephaestus, NCC-2004, of Starfleet, The

International Star Trek Fan Association. All terms

and phrases from Star Trek are owned by

Paramount Pictures Corporation, a division of

Paramount Communications and all rights are

reserved.

Greeting from your Captain, Look for the new rating system in my reviews. I found some chevron characters with which to rate the movies and TV shows. A couple events that are happening in the Birmingham area that might interest you are the Alabama Phoenix Festival at Sheraton Downtown on May 30 through June 2. I will be hosting the Star Trek Panels again this year. I am looking for some input on what are the best and worst episodes of Classic, Animated, Next Gen, DS9, Voyager and Enterprise. You can email your thoughts to the email below or write them on our Facebook Group: Hephaestus - Starfleet. Also the Alabama Theater is show Star Trek Wrath of Khan on July 18th. The Alabama Theater is hoping people will come in costume. Look to our Facebook group for further updates. Capt. MarkAdam Miller [email protected] https://www.facebook.com/groups/Hephaestus2004/ P.S. Please note that we are changing the dates for the May and June Poker and social because of Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. They will be the third weekend of each month instead of the second weekend.

I'm excited about some news from the Star Wars world. The other evening on the national news Brian Williams announced that the three major actors in the first three Star Wars movies, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hammill, have all agreed to be in Episode seven. The movie is due out December of 2015. I have wanted this to happen as long as I can remember. No details were given in the report. I can't wait! And you may have seen this news from the Star Trek world: NASA has awarded William Shatner its Distinguished Public Service medal. This award is the highest award the agency can bestow on non-government personnel. Shatner has spent a lot of his time over the years encouraging students to study math and science. Also, many of the astronauts and engineers who are a part of NASA were inspired by him. Shatner also narrated several documentaries, including one celebrating the 30th anniversary of the space shuttle missions. Shatner received the award at his annual Hollywood Charity Horse Show. Now to ship's news. Remember our next two socials have been moved to the third Saturday of the month, May 17 and June 21. And Poker Night has also been moved to the third Friday. Our next big social is coming up on July12. All socials will take place at the Mohney's. That's all, folks.

April 12, 2014 Spring Cookout

We had a lot of fun at our Spring Cookout. We had Firefly going all day on the television and if you had not seen the show before you would have seen about 2/3 of the episodes. We played Munchkin, Dalmuti and Texas Hold’em. The Millers cleaned up in all three games with Brenda winning Munchkin and MarkAdam winning Dalmuti and Texas Hold’em. There were hot dogs and hamburgers to eat among several other things that people brought. We also gave Katrina Mohney her award for Cadet of the Year for Region 2. Overall, everyone had a good time.

. Attendance: 20 people.

Personnel Updates:

I wish to congratulate Ensign Donald Arnold on his taking 56 Starfleet Academy Courses over the past 3 months. Of those 56 courses he has past 2 with Distinction and 24 with Honors. The Academy is a way to have fun and learn other things about the Fandom of Star Trek and Science Fiction. If you would like to take academy course then you can go to: http://acad.sfi.org/

If you have any news or accomplishments you would like to share with the group please email them to me at: [email protected]. Also your personal updates can give your Captain added info to help get you recognition and an award at summit for your accomplishments.

SSttaarrfflleeeett MMaarriinnee CCoorrppss Greetings,

The 654th MSG is looking for members. There is a completely different set of Academy schools for those

trying to get the Boothby awards. There is no pressure in joining. There are two categories: Active which

means all ranks will be Marine ranks, and Reserve which mean you stay primarily Fleet and only use Marine

ranks when doing marine stuff. Contact Major General Neil Yawn if you are interested or have questions.

Looking to boost your Boothby Awards? The Starfleet Marines Academy may be your answer. Check out

what SFMC Academy has for you.

Major General Neil Yawn, OIC 1 BN, 2BDE, OIC 654 MSG

10. Why did the Klingon cross the road? – To conquer the other side.

***

9. Why did the Borg cross the road? – Because it assimilated the chicken!

***

8. What do you call it when that Strategic Operations Officer on DS9 runs as fast as he can? – Worf Speed.

***

7. What did Picard say as Data struggled to repair the Marclosian Stitching Machine? – "Make it sew."

***

6. What happened when Yeoman Rand complained that someone had cut a peephole in her cabin door? – Captain Kirk promised to look into it.

***

5. How many members of the USS Enterprise does it take to change a light bulb? – Six: Scotty to get on the intercom when the light goes out and say, "I canna’ do it, Cap'n!", Spock to tell Kirk he is proceeding illogically, McCoy to say "Dammit, Jim -- I'm a doctor not an electrician!!", Kirk to screw it

in, and two red-shirt security officers to die in the process.

***

4. What is Riker's dating philosophy? – If at first you don't succeed, try Troi again.

Cortical Stimulator Stat

The Cortical Stimulator may not be far off. The Air Force is experimenting with Cortical Stimulators to

help keep their drone pilots awake. Piloting drone can be boring as you are just looking at gauges and monitors

to see where the drone is going. You do not have the feel of a real aircraft to keep you awake. The Air Force is

experimenting with electric shock to see if it works better than caffeine. Some of caffeine’s known side effects

include jitters, heart-racing and mental crashing. So we may have Cortical Stimulators to help us with the long

road trips we have to make sometimes to get to Disney World. (www.Startrek.com)

Roberto Orci slated to Direct Star Trek 3

Variety Magazine as stated that Roberto Orci will direct the next Star Trek movie. He is one of the three

writers of the film (J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay). Mr. Orci is producer and writer for Sleepy Hollow, Hawaii

Five-O and Transformers Prime. J.J. Abrams will still be producing the film along with Bryan Burke and David

Ellison. (www.trektoday.com)

Awards to the Stars

Both Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner are being honored for there work. Leonard Nimoy is being

honored with the Governor’s Award by the Boston chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and

Science. This will be done on June 7th. William Shatner was awarded the Distinguished Public Service Medal

from NASA. (www.treknews.net)

Milestones of Star Trek

Wendy Hughes (STTNG: Lessons) died March 8, 2014. She played Lt. Cmdr. Nella Daren, a love interest of Captain Picard. She died of cancer and was 61. (Did I miss something? You have an interesting news item from Star Trek? Then send me your suggestions and

Amazing Spiderman 2

(Spoiler Alert – May be spoilers in the article)

Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are back as Spiderman/Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy. This time Spiderman has to take on Electro/Max Dillon (Jamie Foxx) and Green Goblin/Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan). Sally Fields again plays the role of Aunt May.

It was a good movie but it does not stand up to Avengers or the latest Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The problem I feel with this movie is that they try too hard to show what happened in the first movie. I am like if the movie has a number larger then one and you want to see it then you need to rent the movies that came before so you are not lost. They also are trying to add things from the comic book that they feel that the audience wouldn’t know since they didn’t read the comic. The problem with this is that if someone who is not a Spider-man fan is going to see this movie they are going with a Spider-man fan who can explain it to them after the movie is over. Another problem is that they can not get enough material to write a good story for one villain so they have to add another to complete the film. (Spoiler) True the two villains do come together in this film but I feel they didn’t really work together to try to defeat Spidey.

A small problem I still have with Sally Field’s portrayal of Aunt May is her age. I like Sally Field (Norma Rae, The Flying Nun, Etc.) I just feel that Ms. Field is too young to play Peter’s Aunt. Then again I always felt that Aunt May in the comic books was more the age of a great aunt then just an aunt.

All in all a good movie, but I wish Disney would tell Sony to take a hike and let Marvel Studios do Spider-man right.

RATING: AAAaa
