HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman god

of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the world’s

largest iron statue, that of the Roman god, Vulcan. We

named our Starfleet chapter the Hephaestus to give us

ties to our city and to Star Trek, which has had its own

Vulcan since 1966. Hephaestus forged armor and

weapons for the gods. We create our own “armor and

weapons” here, in our newsletter, so it is called The

Anvil.

Greetings from your Captain,

The Starfleet Academy Contest results are in and they are listed in the Starfleet Academy article (pg. 17).

The April cookout had a good turnout. Check out the Ship’s Log to see what happened (pg. 3).

I have not received any feedback on the Community Outreach so I will be looking for other ways that we

can help the community. I am also rethinking the Challenge Contest. Since I am not receiving any answers to

the challenges in the newsletter I will be looking to try something else. Exploring Trek (pg. 6) has done pretty

good. Come see us on the 4th Thursday of the month at Kingdom Comics and discuss different episode of Star

Trek.

In next month’s The Anvil we will be discussing Earth-like episodes. These are the episodes that have

planets that mimic the earth in various time periods. Send which is your favorite episodes and the reason they

are your favorite to [email protected]. I am still looking for some help in writing pieces for The

Anvil. Check out possible topics on pg. 18.

XO Briefing

Hello crew,

Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy’s just a good ole country Doctor who graduated from Ole Miss and then went

to Starfleet Academy. He keeps Captain Kirk in touch with his own humanity.

Dr. Beverly Crusher is the mother of Wesley. She knew Captain Picard through her husband Jack. She also

writes and directs plays onboard the ship.

Dr. Julian Bashir graduated second in his class. His parents put him through an illegal genetic enhancement

therapy procedure which made him really smart. He had a little naive enthusiasm about frontier medicine when

he first arrived on the station.

The Doctor (EMH) was never meant to be running for seven years and he has a mobile emitter for him to go

around the ship and beam down to planets.

Dr. Phlox was Captain Archer’s first choice to be on their first mission. He has a very cheerful soul. He

had a very different view on living and a way of practicing medicine.

I have only met Wayne at Region 2 Summit. He was enjoyable

company and gave interesting insight on Star Trek and Starfleet. I

was impressed that he remembered me this year, Summit 2016 from

Summit 2014. I was the one to put the pie in his face at that Summit.

Starfleet has lost a good Commander.

April 9, 2016 – Spring Cookout }

The Spring Cookout was great fun. We had a lot of food and fun. Promotions were handed out to Katina

Mohney, Tara Mohney and Sandra Holsey. Also the winners of the Starfleet Academy Challenge were

announced. Winner was Brenda A. Miller, 2nd Place was Sandra Holsey and 3rd place was Donald Arnold.

Dalmuti was a hard fought game to the very end with Danny Potts ending up the victor. Texas Hold’em

game was also very challenging with MarkAdam Miller finally winning. Video games were also played as

well as watching Star Trek, the Animated Series and Quantum Leap.

April 28, 2016 – Exploring Trek

We had our 2nd panel discussion at a local Comic Shop (Kingdom Comics) to introduce people to Star

Trek, STARFLEET and the Hephaestus. The panel discussed time travel using the 2-parter TNG: Time’s

Arrow. We had a new attendee who is not only interested in the panel discussions but coming to club events

as well. The discussion went very well.

April 19, 2016 – Brixx Pizza Trivia

I and the 2nd Officer Brenda Miller went to Brixx Pizza for the Challenge Entertainment Trivia. The game

is hosted by a fellow Trekkie Lewis Stockham. Brenda and I were able to win 2nd place which gave us a

gift card to Brixx Pizza. It was a fun time.

STARFLEET Marine Corps Our Marines are headed up by Lt. General Neil Yawn. The Marines are part of STARFLEET but are for

those who want a more military aspect to STARFLEET. There are two categories of Marines: Active which

means all ranks will be Marine ranks, and Reserve which means you stay primarily STARFLEET and only use

Marine ranks when doing marine activities. If you are interested or have questions about the Marines, then

Exploring Trek April 28th: Exploring Trek discussed the two-parter TNG: Times

Arrow. The discussion included important characters, how time

travel would affect the time stream and the techno jargon that was

used in the episode. Many points of view were expressed.

Is There a Doctor on the Ship…? By Captain MarkAdam Miller

Star Trek has offered a wide range of Doctors on the show. Most of the main-character doctors are the

Chief Medical Officer of the ship. Their job is to see to the health of the ship personnel. They held the rank

from Lt. (Dr. Bashir) to Commander (McCoy, Pulaski, & Crusher) depending on their length of service. A few

didn’t hold any rank (Emergency Medical Hologram and Dr. Phlox). In all instances the Chief Medical Officer

has the final authority if the problem deals with health and wellbeing of ship and crew including the Captain.

Each doctor has his/her own way of doing things. An interesting FYI: because of the way the actors betrayed

these doctors, many medical schools received numerous applications. The applicants wanted to be like the

Doctor they saw on the show.

The best known Star Trek doctor is Dr. Leonard “Bones” H. McCoy (TOS) played by DeFroest Kelley (and

in the reboot by Karl Urban). Dr. McCoy believed himself to be an old country doctor who believed in the

body’s natural ability to heal and that a little suffering was good for the soul. But he also thought that modern

medicine was better than the medicine of the past. When visiting a hospital in 1986 he compared the modern

medicine of 1986 to being in medieval times. Maybe because of his medical knowledge, Dr. McCoy was leery

of using the transporter. This was just a small part of his fear that technology could cause harm if not kept in

check.

Next Generation (TNG) gave us two chief medical officers: Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) and Dr.

Katherine Pulaski (Diana Muldaur). Dr. Pulaski was more a female Dr. McCoy. She had a fear of transporters

and looked to the human side of medicine as opposed to the technology side. Dr. Crusher on the other hand was

more for pushing the boundaries of medical science. She was sympathetic to her patience but was more about

the cure than the patient.

Deep Space Nine (DS9) gave us the young enthusiastic doctor in Dr. Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig). This

doctor was on fire. He was ready to bring modern medicine to the natives and was prepared to cure any

diseases that was out there to be discovered. He was a very competent doctor who was 2nd in his class (by his

choice) and was very hard to get along with. Many of his fellow shipmates were rubbed the wrong way with his

self-assurance and pride that he portrayed.

Voyager gave us an Emergency Medical Hologram(EMH) when Chief Medical Officer Fitzgerald (Jeff

McCarthy) died when Voyager was transported to the Delta Quadrant. The EMH is designed to help only in

emergencies when extra medical help is needed. When the entire medical staff is kill the EMH has to learn how

to be part of the crew. In the beginning the EMH is gruff and lacks a bedside manner. As he grows and learns

how to deal with the crew he becomes more of what is needed in a medical doctor. He is probably the best

doctor since he is a combination of all the great physicians that had come before him.

The final doctor is from Enterprise and is an alien. Dr. Phlox (John Billingsley) is from Denobula. He was

chosen because of his diverse knowledge of different species of intelligent life. His medical bay was a

menagerie of animals to provide the necessary medicines to treat the number of diseases that the Enterprise

would encounter. He was always looking for ways to understand different cultures to better help those in needs.

He also had a strong ethical sense that would try Captain Archer on several occasions.

With all these different doctors to choose from it is hard to say which would make the best one. The EMH

would probably have the best answer to a serious illness but I believe Dr. McCoy is the best because he not only

What others think…

Matt Boyd – McCoy, Speaks his mind. He's compassionate and will cure grandma's kidney dialysis.

Sandra Hosley – McCoy, of course! The original… principled, down-home, loyal…

Brenda Miller – It’s hard to choose…} I love Bones for his country doctor style and I love the EMH for

wanting to expand his ‘human’ experience and I love Bashir for wanting to fit in with the ‘common’

people. (Besides, all three of these guys are pretty cute!!!)

Sue Ellen Newell Mohney – Hard choice for me between McCoy & Voyager's Doctor. But it would be

Voyager's Doctor by a hair. The character development there was one of the best in the trek-verse, IMHO.

Bren Tiner - McCoy is my pic for the best doctor. Why? He was not afraid to speak his mind. His

comments were funny and paved the way for Kirk's comebacks. He had a great relationship with Kirk and

Spock. He safely housed Spock's soul / Katra. Final reason: Bones was serious, funny and loveable.

Star Trek Fiction Hey, guys! I promise the story will be back when I get time and I miss

you all. However, do not fear, all is well with myself and my family. In fact,

it’s for many good reasons that I have been unable to update my chronicles or

attend a meeting. In the past several months, my performance life has picked

up in abundance. Pictures and updates can be found on my social media

regularly. Recently I was doing tech for The Adams Family: The Musical

play that was performed at Hueytown High School.

The plays plot: The Addams Family has a problem! Wednesday, now 18

years old, has a boyfriend… A NORMAL ONE! He and his family are

coming to meet the creepy, kooky family we all know and love! And what

happens? The exact chaos you’d expect! Come see the show as the word

“normal” gets a whole new meaning!

Race to Kentucky for IC 2016 By Vice Admiral Lucy Ferron Franck

Fun fact: 95% of the world’s bourbon supply comes from Kentucky!

The IC 2016 Committee invites everyone to attend International Conference

in Louisville, KY, on August 12-14. There will be plenty of fun, festivities,

and informational panels for first-timers and veteran attendees alike.

In the Bluegrass State of Kentucky, Louisville is home to the famous

Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, Kentucky bourbon producers,

Louisville Sluggers production (which has a museum), and the Muhammad

Ali Museum to name a few of the sites. It is also the home of the Hot Brown

Sandwich. I can’t wait to try a Hot Brown after reading the description: an

open-faced turkey, cheese and bacon sandwich with Mornay sauce.

The theme for IC 2016 is “Trekkin’ II: Horsing around on the Ohio!” We’ll be racing to the future as we

take you out to the holodeck and explore NASA and celebrate Star Trek’s 50th Anniversary. The conference

hotel is the Crowne Plaza Airport Louisville. The hotel has plenty of roomy rooms to host all meetings, panels,

merchandise dealers, and fun times. We will be having all the traditional activities such as Opening

Ceremonies and Awards, General Session, Ask the Brass, Charity Auction, Music and Dance, Marine Mess and

Saturday night banquet. Some unique concurrent sessions/panels are being planned, such as The Star Trek

Barkeep, Propmaking 101, Star Trek Celebrations, Sports around the Federation, Star Trek and Religion,

Making Prostheses, STARFLEET Special Ops, the National Space Society and more.

Star Trek News & More Don’t Plan to Binge Watch the New Star Trek

If you planned to binge watch the new Star Trek that comes out in January of 2017 then you will need to

redo your schedule. CBS is planning to release one episode per week. This may not bode well for the series.

There is a good possibility that they will be offering it to other outlets like Hulu. The new series is set to start

filming this Fall at the Pinewood Studios in Toronto, Canada. It will be out in January of 2017

Is Fan Film Star Trek in Trouble…?

The lawsuit, Aranax vs Paramount/CBS, is still in the initial phases. At stake may be how other fan films

will be effected. Tommy Kraft who made the fan film Star Trek: Horizon was contacted by a CBS executive

and advised not to go forward with the sequel that Mr. Kraft was planning to make. Mr. Kraft and his co-

producer Ryan Webber will be focusing on non-Star Trek Sci-Fi material for the time being. No other

production teams have said they have been contacted. It is not clear if CBS/Paramount is doing this with all fan

films or just the ones that may make money from their productions. If it is the latter case it is understandable,

but if it is more the first then CBS/Paramount might lose the PR game in the end.

Star Wars Land at Disney Hollywood Studios

If you want to visit the places that are shown in Star Wars, then you may not have to wait long. Disney

Hollywood Studios is making way for 2 to 3 Star Wars rides, a Star Wars Street Market that will give Diagon

Alley a run for its money, and an up-close-and-personal encounter with several creatures from the Star Wars

universe either as people dressed up or animatronics that will interact with the visitors. There will also be a

themed table-service restaurant. So grab your Jedi cloaks and your light sabers and head on down to Disney

He was the Commander (President) of Starfleet International form January 2014 to his death this past April.

William Schallert – May 8, 2016 age 93

He was known in Star Trek as the bureaucrat Nilz Baris who gave Kirk a headache in Trouble with Tribbles.

He also played a Bajoran musician, Varani, in the DS9: Sanctuary episode. He was best known as the father on

Captain America: Civil War

Marvel has done it again. They have built an action movie that is not just car

chases and fighting but also has a story line that makes a reason for what is going on.

The characters also give you a reason to find out what is motivating them. Chris Evans

and Robert Downey Jr. reprise their roles of Captain America/Steve Rodgers and

Ironman/Tony Stark with the same determination that makes these characters seem like

real people. This movie gives the same feeling of wanting more on what is happening

in this universe.

The movie also does not get bogged down with trying to explain who the characters are. The movie does

introduce Spider-man (Tom Holland) and Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) but assumes that the audience

knows who they are and doesn’t bother to explain them. Missing is Thor and the Hulk but this is explained as

part of the problem the movie is addressing. Other characters from Marvel show up as well. Black widow

(Scarlett Johansson), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Falcon (Anthony Mackie), War Machine (Don Cheadle),

Scarlett Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and Vision (Paul Bettany). We also get more backstory

on the Winter Soldier/“Bucky” Barnes (Sebastian Stan). Mr. Stan’s portrayal gives an understanding of what

Bucky had gone through that made him the Winter Soldier.

The main focus of the movie (possible spoiler) is who is responsible for what the Avengers do. When the

Avengers go about protecting the world they also cause a lot of death and destruction. This was brought up in

both Avengers movies but as a side note. Here they are facing the question head on. Our two protagonists,

Steve and Tony, come down on different sides of the issue which is the cause of the Civil War. Both men agree

there is a problem but how to handle it is the question. }

Decisions are made but a disaster happens that tests those decisions. This tests the audience – whose side

are they on. Which side are you for – Team Captain America or Team Ironman? Only after seeing the movie

will you be able to decide which side you are on. As for me, I am siding with Team Captain America.

May 27-29, 2016 – TimeGate – Marriott Century Center Atlanta, GA timegatecon.org/

TimeGate is an annual Doctor Who and British media and culture convention in Atlanta, GA. Attendees

come from all over the Southeast, all over the nation and even from as far away as England to take part in the

festivities. Launched in 2005, the convention hits its 10-year anniversary in 2016 with special guest Katy

Manning and Michelle Gomez. Past Doctor Who guests have included actors Colin Baker, Sophie Aldred,

Mary Tamm, John Levene, Colin Spaull and Caitlin Blackwood, script editors Terrance Dicks and Andrew

Cartmel, composer Dominic Glynn, film editor Louis Robinson, and more.

This section lists Cons that might be if interest to our group. It is not intended to be a complete list. If I’ve

friend of the ship General Jill Rayburn ([email protected]). The courses are a lot of fun and you will be

surprised at what you will learn. You may even learn something that might help you in your regular life.
