Dear audience from Jerusalem and beyond,

It is a great privilege - and responsibility - to be associated with a cultural institution that bears the name of Jerusalem, and carries around the world the image and values of that city. No other vessel can play such a powerful role of an ambassador as a symphonic orchestra, and it is my privilege - and responsibility - to draw the line which we will follow in the next 3 seasons. Jerusalem is a symbol of spirituality and universality, and therefore came to my mind the name of Beethoven, one of the greatest humanists of all times. A complete cycle of his symphonies is rarer than one might expect, and it will be a unique opportunity for you to have a complete view on those marvelous works, and for the orchestra to put them all “back into their fingers". The JSO-IBA has the duty to promote the Israeli composers and we will incorporate them into our programmes as often as possible, exploring in the next seasons many different ways to make modern music friendly to our audience. The prestige of an orchestra lays as well in its capacity to commission new pieces, and we have asked Jewish American composer Marc Neikrug, whose works were recently performed by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, to write his Third Symphony for us.

2013 is a year of many anniversaries, most of which will be celebrated during the season; but May 29th is especially worth mentioning: this day marks the exact date of the 100th anniversary of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring that has by now attained the status of a classic piece in the repertoire. Most importantly, this year marks our 75th season, and I will take that opportunity to honor some of the prestigious figures that have been associated with the orchestra.

The JSO-IBA is your orchestra, and I am anxious to explore all possible ways to interact with our audience. Therefore we are experimenting with an "Audience Choice" concert at the end of the season, in which you will have the possibility to express your wishes and select the pieces that you would like to hear.

My simple wish for this orchestra is that it becomes a Jewish home for all music lovers of the world, as Jerusalem is a Jewish home for all of us, and that we send to our audience - from Jerusalem and beyond - the message of love and universality that all good music carries within itself.

Dear Music Lovers,The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, IBA, is proud to present you with the program for the 2012-2013 concert season. This season marks the 75th anniversary of the orchestra as a landmark in the cultural landscape of Jerusalem. Over the years the orchestra has hosted the greatest conductors and soloists in the world. This year we have the pleasure of adding our new Music Director, Maestro Frédéric Chaslin, to the distinguished list of conductors who have led the orchestra. Maestro Chaslin has chosen to celebrate our Jubilee season with a string of festive concerts and series, which undoubtedly will strike a chord in the hearts of all music lovers. One very thrilling example is the complete cycle of Beethoven symphonies, which the orchestra will perform over this season. In an exciting tribute to the orchestra’s glorious history, we will dedicate the concerts of our longrunning Classical Series to the great musicians who have worked with the orchestra over the years, with concerts devoted to musical giants such as Arthur Rubinstein, Otto Klemperer, Pablo Casals, Isaac Stern and others. In addition, the celebrations will include several special concerts, most notably a Gala Concert with the renowned French Composer Michel Legrand. We will naturally continue with our ongoing program, with the Vocal Series (in collaboration with the Israeli Opera), the Popular Classics Series and the Family Concert Series. This year we introduce a new series, which offers a combination of concerts with lectures on historical matters. The series will be presented by composer-conductor Gil Shohat alongside Oren Nahari, esteemed Editor of World News at the Israeli Television.In short, we offer a variety of musical excitements to all Jerusalemites, guests and tourists. Dear followers of the orchestra,The Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, IBA, serves as one of the central cultural anchors for the preservation of the city’s character. The orchestra has been accompanying the life and chronicles of the city and the state for over 75 years, since the very beginning of radio broadcast on the Palestine Broadcast Service (today’s Kol Israel) in 1936. The orchestra’s uniqueness lies in the fact that its concerts are enjoyed and appreciated not merely by the audience in the concert hall; through the Voice of Music station and Israeli Television it is available to listeners all over the country, thus rendering the orchestra a true national asset. Over the years, the orchestra and its players have hosted the finest musicians locally and globally. Another mission lies in the orchestra’s educational activity. This year, thousands of children from elementary schools in and around Jerusalem attended JSO’s concerts, introducing them to the world and culture of classical music. Thousands more have engaged with our musicians in 100 meetings which took place within various schools. This coming year, this initiative will be expanded to include high schools, and our collaboration with the Music Academy and Conservatory is expected to grow ever deeper. On March 30th, 1936, the voice of Postmaster General Colonel Hudson burst into the ether, announcing for the first time “Hello, Hello! This is Jerusalem Calling”, followed by the Hebrew equivalent, proclaimed by translator Yitzhak Abbadi. High Commissioner Sir Arthur Grenfell Wauchope then delivered a speech, officially inaugurating the Palestine Broadcasting Service. Music was part of public broadcasted content from its very inception, and even more so in the years of the British Mandate, since the policy was not to involve any political content whatsoever. The first musical sounds heard on that occasion were those of the piano of Erich (Aryeh) Sachs, who played an introduction to a song sung by Chaim Vittorio Weinberg. Initially, the musical needs of the young radio station were supplied by the small Chamber Orchestra of the Palestine Broadcasting Service, which was directed by the singer-conductor Karel Salmon (originally Karl Salomon). Apart from fulfilling these necessary musical obligations, in true visionary and pioneering fashion, the ensemble set itself to pave the way and establish the ground for future musical activity in Jerusalem.

A Historical Season

During its 75 years, the orchestra has worked with some of the most legendary and inspiring musicians, who have contributed to shaping the orchestra’s spirit and heritage. First and foremost was the legendary conductor Otto Klemperer, who conducted the orchestra during three different visits.His first visit was nothing short of surprising. In 1951 Klemperer was in Jerusalem on a family visit. At the invitation of Shabtai Petrushka, Klemperer, who had previously been denied the possibility of conducting the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra, arrived at a rehearsal of the Kol Israel Orchestra. At the time, the radio orchestra was not regarded as a fully professional one and Petrushka expressed his apologies and concerns for the quality of the orchestra. Sitting through the rehearsal, Klemperer then turned to the conductor Hannan Schlezinger in German and courteously requested permission to work with the orchestra. Less than 5 minutes passed before Klemperer paused and exclaimed at Petrushka: “You yourself are horrible! This

is an excellent orchestra!”. He then proceeded to lead the orchestra in an all Mozart concert, held at the Edison Cinema hall. Under Klemperer’s guidance the orchestra was imbued with the seeds of excellence and pride. His two subsequent visits were also special and emotional: one in 1967, on the eve of the Six Day War; the other, in 1971, while the conductor was in his twilight days, during which he was awarded a special Israeli passport. As part of our 75th Season celebrations we shall re-visit these great moments and share them with you - the audience.After Klemperer came other mighty musicians: Igor Markevitch, Mstislav Rostropovich, Pablo Casals, Isaac Stern, Arthur Rubinstein and others, as well as composers such as Igor Stravinsky, Olivier Messiaen, Darius Milhaud, Krzysztof Penderecki and Frank Martin.For our 75th Season we are delighted to dedicate a series of tribute concerts to a number of these legendary musicians, whose contribution had been essential to the formation of the JSO-IBA as we know it today.

The Beethoven Series: A Comprehensive Look at Beethoven’s Complete Cycle of Symphonies

An Electrifying Season!

“I am electrical by nature. Music is the electric soil in which the spirit lives,

thinks, and invents.” Ludwig van Beethoven

Beethoven’s imagination was set ablaze by the technological discoveries of his era. As the radio orchestra, the JSO-IBA chronicles were intertwined with innovations and technological developments. The first pioneer was engineer Moshe Rubin - known for his colorful figure as much as for his technical ingenuity - who headed the technical department. He was later joined by Avraham (Gudi) Gat and Akiva Melamed who led a team which specialized in an accurate deliverance of the sound to the audience - in acoustic spaces as well as in recordings and broadcasts, always in search of the latest technological improvements and innovations.The orchestra played a central role in these developments. The early tests for stereo broadcast, for example, were performed during a special late night concert. Lacking the necessary transmitter, the concert was broadcast on two separate frequencies: the Hebrew and

Arabic stations of Kol Israel. To acheive the spatial effect of stereo, the audience at home was instructed to tune two different radio devices simultaneously. The early experiments in live television broadcast, which preceded the official ones, were likewise conducted from concerts of the JSO-IBA. True to the hectic spirit of the great Viennese composer, Maestro Chaslin refuses to remain stagnant and promises to always be innovative and surprising. “Jerusalem is a symbol of spirituality and universality”, he writes in his introduction to this brochure, “and therefore came to my mind the name of Beethoven, one of the greatest humanists of all times”. Quite astoundingly, a complete cycle of this kind is not such a common affair, and some of these symphonies have not been heard as part of our subscription series in years. Th

Vocal music has been an essential part of the JSO from the very beginning. Led by Karel Salmon, in 1940 the orchestra set itself for a particularly challenging endeavor: a performance of Bloch’s Sacred Service, complete with a choir and sung in Hebrew. It was a demanding and complicated feat for the young orchestra. In 1954 the orchestra rose to yet another vocal challenge: the world première of Darius Milhaud’s opera David, which was held at the Edison Cinema hall. In the summer of 1964, as part of the Israeli Festival, the orchestra took part in a concert of historical significance: the world première of Stravinsky’s cantata Abraham and Isaac, conducted by the great Robert Craft and

supervised by the composer (who also conducted his own Tehilim Symphony). As the decades passed the extent of the vocal repertoire grew ever bigger, a trend which culminated in the 1970s with the founding of the Liturgica festival by JSO’s Music Director Gary Bertini, an event which brought about real change in the status of vocal music in Israel.In recent seasons, the JSO-IBA has been consistently collaborating with the Israeli Opera in putting on great vocal and liturgical works. For our 75th anniversary, the JSO-IBA presents: A Series Full of Magic!The Family Concert Series is back with a beloved cast of surprising friends: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart returns again, to direct his last and personal favorite opera - The Magic Flute; Victor the Storytelling Barber is back as well, this time as the human representative of all animals. In his lovely and colorful style Victor will present his own “green version” of the much loved Peter and the Wolf; and a special concert for young musicians.Plus: a special visit by Idit Schechtman with a Magician’s School concert and actor-director Danny Ehrlich, with The Ugly Duckling and Cinderella in a fairytale theater concert.

The Cantorial SeriesCantorial music was an essential part of the musical landscape from the first day of broadcast. In fact, cantor Chaim Vittorio Weinberg was the first singer heard on the radio on the historic inauguration day in 1936.This Season we will dedicate four concerts to fully orchestrated Jewish liturgical and to cantorial music, starring the leading cantors of our time.

Dear audience,

The celebrations for our 75th season will extend beyond the concert hall into a number of special projects:

“Maestro Chaslin presents” –a video project:As you can see in this brochure, Maestro Chaslin will conduct about half of the subscription concerts this season. To grant our audience with a richer listening experience, this year JSO-IBA will be producing a series of video films in which Maestro Chaslin will present a focus on the great pieces that we will perform, as well as on the artists to whom we shall dedicate our special tribute concerts. Further, old archival clips and rare recordings will be interwoven into the program and we will share them on our digital channels – our website, our blog, our Facebook and our YouTube channel.

“Stepping out of the cabinet” – digitizing the historical JSO archive.As part of our celebrations, we decided to shake the dust off of the old files and folders and transfer the vast sea of information in the archive into accessible digital formats. Old recordings and programs, photos and posters were scanned and digitized, and will be shared with you during this special season. We have conducted interviews with the great people who have been the heart and soul of the orchestra over the decades, collected old newspaper clippings – which we will share with you through our various digital channels.

Sympho-beat – JSO’s online world:A concert experience does not end when you step out of the hall. As an orchestra committed to technological innovations, the JSO-IBA is highly active online. Apart from our website the orchestra is active in a large number of channels – Facebook, YouTube, Twitter and our blog, in which we share a lot of content with our subscribers, who participate actively in making a JSO concert into a real community experience. • Tickets can be cancelled up till 13:00 of the day of the concert by phone; or:

• Tickets can be cancelled at the Box Office; a voucher will be given for the cancelled ticket

• Exchange of tickets between series entails a certain payment (details at the box office)

• Reconstructing subscription cards is with charge• No cash refund for cancelled tickets• Subscribers may exchange one of their tickets for theater

shows at the Jerusalem Theatre. Further details are available at the box office.
