JESSIE BECK EXPECTATIONS I am respectful, responsible, and safe in all areas of the school. I always do my best work – School time is work time I leave personal property at home – Cell phones are always off at school. I stay out of any classroom unless a staff member is present. Bullying is not tolerated and must be reported to an adult in the building. Hats are to be worn outside and are off when inside the building. Eating, drinking or gum chewing is not allowed in the classroom or on the playground, unless a teacher has approved it.

Playground I can follow the directions of the duty teacher, play safely, and I am kind and considerate to others. I can go directly to the playground at recess, stay within the boundaries, respect the red line and request a pass to re-cross it if needed. I am responsible and freeze when the bell rings, then I immediately walk to line up after the duty teacher blows the whistle. I can be respectful and keep my hands and feet to myself, play all games fairly by the rules and leave the rocks, dirt, snowballs and other objects on the ground.

Library I can come to the library when it is open to students, before, during and after school hours. I get a library pass, issued by my teacher to visit the library when it is not my class’ regular time. I take care of our library books and am responsible for those that I have checked out.

Lunchroom I enter the lunchroom respectfully, in a straight line with zero voice level. I sit where directed, and may use my 1-2 voice level while I eat my lunch. I stay in my seat until I am excused. When I leave the lunchroom, the table and floor around me is clean, trash is in the garbage can and trays are neatly stacked.

Bus

I will go promptly to the bus stop in the morning and the afternoon and wait peacefully there. I will respectfully follow the directions and rules of the WCSD bus driver at all times.

Departing the bus, I will go directly where I need to go home, playground, or to have breakfast.

Transitioning Classes move in single file line. I use 0 voice level at all times. My hands remain at my sides. I walk when I am on campus and only run when I am on the playground or participating in mileage club.

Classroom Prepared students arrive on time, ready to learn and will show respect to all. Appropriate language is used at all times. Bullying is not tolerated and must be reported.

The Bear Facts September 2014

Hi, my name is Mrs. Cox and this is my seventh year as librarian at Jessie Beck. In this article, I’ll review some of the “do’s and don’ts” and “in’s and out’s” of the library so that you and your student will be on the same page (no pun intended) as far as library procedures are concerned. FIRST: All students come to the Library on a weekly basis. Kindergartners and first graders can only check out one book each week provided they bring back the book from the previous week. Second – sixth graders can check out two books each week, provided they have brought back the books they have previously checked out. Since kindergarteners are learning how to use shelf markers to find a book, how to check out a book, and how to care for it, they will not be checking out books for the first few weeks. SECOND: I’m asking students to take personal responsibility for their library books, including bringing them back when they are due and taking good care of them while they have them. To help them accomplish this, I ask them to keep the books in their backpacks, except when they take them out to read. That way, they will have their library book with them when it is their library day. Some other Library rules are: No food or open drink containers in their backpacks. No reading their library books around food or drink. Keep their books away from pets and little brothers and sisters. Make sure their hands are clean before reading the book. If your student loses or damages a book, they are responsible for either replacing the book or paying for it. I realize that accidents sometimes happen so please have your student tell me if something happens to their book, so that I don’t put a damaged book back on the shelf. Please feel free to call or come talk to me if any problems arise. THIRD: Scholastic Book Fair will be held during Conference Week, October 24-30. This is a great way to get some early Christmas shopping done! I’m looking forward to another great year of discovering the awesome power of reading. Mrs. Cox

Library News Counselor’s Corner Welcome back to all Beck students and parents! I know it will be a great year. Here are some ways I will be supporting the students, staff and parents at Beck this year:

• Small group and individual counseling for personal, academic, and social success

• Conflict resolution and behavior re-teaching to avoid office referrals

• Class visits and lessons on topics such as conflict/bullying, safety, kindness and other topics as needed

• Emotional support for students experiencing sadness, worries, grief, loss, illness, family changes, or traumatic events

• Consultation with teachers and families regarding individual academic and behavioral supports

• Referrals to community resources and agencies to support family wellness

• Self-Managers Program, our incentive program for 4th through 6th grade students with consistent excellent citizenship and work ethic

I am also excited to tell you about our Beck Happiness Project! Mrs. Hardt, Mrs. Lowden, Mr. Hurley, Mrs. Williams, and I are using Martin Seligman’s Positive Psychology, particularly his PERMA Model of Well-Being: Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment, to foster happiness and contentment at Beck among students and staff. We will be working on positive emotions in particular this school year. (More on this later) If you have any concerns about your child’s well-being please contact me directly at 327-0796 or via email at [email protected]. Heidi Frost

Box Tops for Education: Look for the Box Top on 100's of participating products. Each one is worth 10 cents for the school – seems like a small amount but if everyone collected them, it would amount to a significant benefit to Jessie Beck. Labels for Education: Clip the UPC code with “Labels for Education” on Campbell soups, V8, Dannon, Glad, Emerald Nuts packaging, Swanson, Pepperidge Farm products and Prego. Each label earns points that can be used towards Arts, Athletic, or Academic supplies for the school. Cut out and collect both the Box Tops and Labels for Education and put them in your classroom bag to help your classroom win a small prize for having the most box tops or labels for the month. Don’t forget to ask family and friends for their box tops and labels. We are also looking for people interested in helping with Box Tops and Labels for Education one morning a month at Jessie Beck. Please email Christy at [email protected] And remember to use your Raley’s card, SaveMart SHARES card and Target card when shopping.

Art to Grow We had a great turn out at our kick-off orientation workshop! I am delighted to see so many new faces joining our ART to Grow Team. A special thanks to our veteran ARTies who helped to welcome our newbies, and to Ms. Moore for the use of her room. We had a chance to get our hands dirty (ok, painty) with a demonstration in printmaking. Of course our workshop was not complete without Lanny's wonderful homemade treats and a tour of the art room. So much to explore!!! Want to know and do more? Plan on attending our next workshop scheduled for Tuesday, September 23rd at 3:15 in Ms. Moore's room. Please RSVP to me at [email protected] Remember, there's always room for art. Becoming an art volunteer at Jessie Beck is safe, simple and rewarding. Robin Heywood Jessie Beck Art Coordinator
