From the Principal

Dear Parents

On Monday, November 1st we celebrated with a whole school mass the feast of All Saints Day. Saints often grab the headlines by the stories of the extraordinary deeds they did. It can seem that they are far removed from our common everyday lives and experiences. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, in the early church, all those who committed their lives to God and helping others, however imperfectly, were considered saints. We are all called to be Saints.

We remember the lives of the Saints on the day of their death, sometimes called their “heavenly birthday". Interestingly, there is no occupation or group or endeavour that does not have a Patron Saint. Some of the more famous saints are “naturals" for a match up: St Francis of Assisi – animals; St Dominic- astronomers, St Gabriel the Archangel – broadcasters, postal workers; St Peter – fishermen; St Francis Xavier – missionaries. Some less known Patron Saints are: St Elmo – explosive workers; St Herbert – drought relief; St Polycarp – earaches; St Roch – dogs and dog lovers.

WORLD TEACHERS DAY Last Friday we celebrated World Teachers’ Day. World Teachers’ Day is celebrated annually, a day that we acknowledge the professionalism, dedication and expertise of those responsible for educating our students at OLOG.

As many parents know instinctively, the impact individual teachers have on a child’s education can be great. Teachers are central to learning and, while there are other important factors, including the quality of the curriculum, school environment and student ability and commitment, it is teachers that breathe life into what is being taught and who engage and motivate students.

As a Catholic school we recognise that parents are their children’s first teachers, during the course of primary and secondary school it is often individual teachers that enliven education and cause students to identify what is most exciting and rewarding. Each one of us, if asked, could most likely name one or two special teachers that made what was being studied engaging, lively and relevant and who sparked an interest and passion for learning that was life changing.

Teachers and all educators at OLOG make a significant difference to every child at OLOG. On Friday, Student Voice Leaders thanked teachers and educators with a certificate with words of thanks and appreciation.

From the Principal cont…

From the APRIM

Year 3/4 Mass Last Thursday the Year 3/4‘s participated in their mass which had a theme of ‘Mission’. They reflected on the importance of the Dominican Pillars and their significance in the way that they are embedded in their lives at OLOG. They recognise that we grow through the service that we provide to the community. This helps to create the world that God desires.

From the APRIM cont..

All Saints Day On Monday 1st November we had a lovely whole school mass to celebrate All Saints Day, commemorating all the saints of the church, both known and unknown, who have attained heaven.

Prayer for All Saints Day

Father, all-powerful and ever-living God, we

rejoice in the holy men and women of every

time and place. May their prayers bring us

your forgiveness and love. We ask this

through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who

lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit.

Amen

Year 6 Mass The Year 6’s will participate in Mass next Friday 12th November at 9.15am in the OLOG Church. The theme of their mass is discipleship. Parents are welcome to attend. Premier’s Reading Challenge The medals and certificates have arrived for the 2021 Premier’s Reading Challenge. The children will be acknowledged during assembly next Thursday and the teacher’s will give out their awards.

Meryl Carter- former teacher at OLOG It is with a great deal of sadness that we share the news of the passing of Meryl Carter on October 21st 2021. A dear colleague, friend and teacher within the OLOG Community, she was a much-loved member of our school from 2000-2011.

Appointed by Denis Cranswick, she worked alongside many staff members in her twelve years on staff and was finally farewelled at the End of Year Mass by her family and the OLOG Community, along with Principal Aldo Floreani in 2011.

Meryl had a passion for Maths and correct grammar.

She was a kind and caring person who was loved by all and never left the hearts of those who knew her at OLOG.

She will be sadly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time

Wishing you God’s Blessing Debbie Scuteri APRIM/Leader of Learning
