Santa Claus is Coming to

OLOG Today! Our Lady of Grace Youth Group is hosting a “Breakfast with Santa Event!” on Sunday, December 15, from 9AM to 12 PM. Festivities

will include breakfast, craft making, games and of course a visit with the Santa

Ticket costs are: $5.00/person or a family ticket of $25.00 for families of more than 5.

All Children are invited to come and visit Santa and take photos that day for free, however, they must have a paid admission in order to eat breakfast and participate in activities. Presale tickets are on sale next weekend.

Christmas Nativity Event

All are invited to our Faith Formation Christmas Nativity Event on Wednesday, December 18. Dinner begins at 5:45 PM with activities beginning at 6:15 PM. Our theme is centered on the Nativity Scene popularized by St. Francis of Assisi who is credited for assembling the first “crèche” in 1223, for Midnight Mass.

Today, the 3rd Sunday of Advent, is “Guadete” Sunday; REJOICE SUNDAY! We rejoice because the Lord’s coming is near. As we know, our usual liturgical color for Advent is purple; however, we use

pink this weekend. It’s a gesture of rejoicing, toning down our usual rigorous preparation. What kind of deliverance or salvation are we expecting? If we rejoice for the wrong reasons, we may end up in a huge disappointment. The First Reading (Is 35:1-6a, 10) alluded to the stress of the exiles: people of “feeble hands”, “weak knees” and people “frightened of heart.” To them,

Isaiah proclaimed an Advent message of hope and salvation: “Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindication… to save you. Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared… then the tongue of the mute will sing.” Eventually, Christ came into the world. Here, our Gospel Passage (Matt 11:2-11) picks up the story. John the Baptist, as Christ’s forerunner, had introduced Him as the long-awaited Messiah, saying, “I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God” (John 1:33-34). Wow! Of course, the people couldn’t wait for Christ to dethrone the Roman Empire (the Neo-

Babylonian Empire) and restore Israel to its lost glory. John apparently became emboldened, intensified his preaching, and confronted King Herod, telling him “It is against the Law for you to marry Herodias, your brother Philip's wife, while his brother was alive.” Herod arrested him and threw him into the dungeon. John could not wait for Christ to manifest as “Military Messiah,” rescue him and teach Herod a bitter lesson. Many Israelites also operated with the same mindset. But, they were completely mistaken. Jesus was not a “Military” Messiah! Rather than recruit and train soldiers, he gathered inexperienced civilians to preach the Gospel of love, even for the enemy (cf. Matt 5:44). What a disappointment! John dispatched emissaries to ask Him: “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” What a lesson about the problem of false notions of Christ’s final coming (Parousia (Rapture) or Judgement Day)! Bible Verse of The Week: “Go and tell John what you hear and see…. And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me” (Matt 11:4, 6). Desde el Escritorio del Pastor Hoy, el 3er domingo de Adviento, es el domingo “Guadete;” ¡EL DOMINGO DE REGOCIJO! Nos alegramos porque la venida del Señor está cerca. Como sabemos, nuestro color litúrgico habitual para el Adviento es el púrpura; sin embargo, este fin de semana usamos rosa. Es un símbolo de alegría, suavizando nuestra rigurosa preparación habitual. ¿Qué tipo de liberación o salvación estamos esperando? Si nos regocijamos por razones erróneas, podríamos terminar en una gran decepción. La primera lectura (Isa 35:1-6a, 10) aludió al estrés de los exiliados: personas de “manos cansadas”, “rodillas vacilantes” y personas de “corazón apocado.” Isaías proclamó un Mensaje Adviento de esperanza y salvación: “¡Ánimo! No teman. He aquí que su Dios… viene ya para salvarlos'. Se iluminarán entonces los ojos de los ciegos y los oídos de los sordos se abrirán…. y la lengua del mudo cantará.” Finalmente, Cristo vino al mundo. Aquí, nuestro pasaje del Evangelio (Mateo 11:2-11) retoma la historia. Juan el Bautista, como precursor de Cristo, lo presentó como el Mesías largamente esperado, diciendo: “He visto y he dado testimonio de que este es el Hijo de Dios” (Juan 1:33-34). ¡Wow! Por supuesto que la gente no podía esperar a que Cristo destronase al Imperio Romano (Imperio Neo babilónico) y restaurara a Israel a su gloria pérdida. Aparentemente, Juan se envalentonó, intensificó su predicación y se enfrentó al rey Herodes, diciéndole: “Es contra la ley que te cases con Herodías, la esposa de tu hermano Philip, mientras su hermano estaba vivo.” Herodes lo arrestó y lo arrojó al calabozo. Let’s Continue the Christmas Celebration

We sometimes forget that Christmas is not a day, but an entire season. It is a short season, but celebrates not only the Nativity of the Lord (Christmas), but the Holy Family, the Epiphany of the Lord, and the Baptism of the Lord.

To continue the Christmas celebration, I would like to have a special “display” on the Feast of the Holy Family: a special display of our Nativity Scenes. Do you have a special Nativity set that has been passed on for generations? Is your Nativity set handmade in ceramics or wood? Is your Nativity set from somewhere around the world and is quite unique? Do you have two or more? I hope that at least 25 of our families will participate and help make the Feast of Holy Family a memorable time for all of our Holy Families. Of course, I would love to have many more. SAINT JOHN OF THE CROSS As a young Carmelite, he was recruited by Teresa of Ávila for her Discalced (“barefoot,” evangelical poverty) Carmelite reform, striving to renew the Church from within after the Protestant Reformation had led countless religious away.

John suffered unspeakably harsh abuse, even im-prisonment, from friars who rejected this reform. Yet during these times of deepest suffering, John composed spiritual masterpieces that still guide souls to God, their titles reflecting his own painful yet ultimately victorious journey: from The Dark Night of the Soul through The Ascent of Mount Carmel to his Spiritual Canticle and The Living Flame of Love. Discipleship Committee Year End Review

Our Discipleship committee was busy this year and here is a summary of what was achieved. • In 2018 we had visited various ministries for a vision evaluation, so this year we returned to the ministries

with an updated report especially concentrating on the parish finances. From this evaluation we have implemented the following:

Formed a 5-year Planning Committee, hosted a Social Justice Retreat, inputted small bios on various saints in the bulletin, and offered small groups to do Fr. Tobin’s Mass book.

• Celebrated Fr. Emmanuel’s 25th Anniversary Party

• Hosted a Living the Eucharist Reunion with an intro to the Mass

• Hosted the Lent and Advent Parish Retreats

• Formed our Discipleship Mission Statement Team: Don Carothers, Liz, Lubbering, Rosivette Rodriguez, Diane Cortese, Osborne McCarter, Tracy Flavell

REASON TO REJOICE

Dark violet is used throughout Advent to express its character as a season of spiritual preparation for Christ-mas and “the coming of the Lord.” But on the Third Sunday of Advent, formerly known as Gaudete (Latin for “rejoice”) Sunday, rose may be added to the liturgi-cal environment. The entire liturgy is infused with a spirit of rejoicing. Today’s first reading and Gospel proclaim the reali-ty of God’s saving work in our midst. Isaiah exuberantly describes the idyllic transformation of all creation as a result of God’s presence in the midst of the people. In the Gospel, Jesus connects Isaiah’s prophecy with what is happening in his own ministry. In addition to the list of healings from Isaiah (the blind, the lame, lepers, and the deaf), Jesus’ presence brings two other reasons for rejoicing: “The dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them” (Matthew 11:5). MOTIVO DE REGOCIJO

El color morado se usa durante el Adviento para expre-sar el carácter de este tiempo de preparación espiritual para la Navidad y la “venida del Señor”. Pero en el Tercer Do-mingo de Adviento, anteriormente conocido como Domingo Gaudete (“regocijo” en latín), se puede agregar el color rosa al ambiente litúrgico. Toda la liturgia está impregnada de regocijo. La primera lectura de hoy y el Evangelio proclaman la realidad de la obra salvadora de Dios entre nosotros. Isaías describe con exuberancia la idílica transformación de toda la creación como resultado de la presencia de Dios en medio de su pueblo. En el Evangelio, Jesús vincula la profecía de Isaías con lo que está ocurriendo en su propio ministerio. Además de lista de curaciones de Isaías (los ciegos, los co-jos, los leprosos y los sordos), la presencia de Jesús ofrece otras dos razones para regocijarnos: “Los muertos resucitan y a los pobres se les anuncia el Evangelio” (Mateo 11:5).
