Intro: Matthew takes us into the last of the five discourses and narratives at the center of the Gospel. The life of discipleship, which leads unwaveringly to the cross, is Jesus’ focus. First Reading: Is 55:6-9 In Isaiah, the Lord asserts that his thoughts are not ours. His view of life is not ours. These are powerful words to help prepare us for the message of today’s Gospel account. Second Reading: Phi 1:20c-23, 27a We begin to hear from the letter of St Paul to the Philippians. He writes to them with firmest conviction that whatever his life holds in the near future – life or death – he knows that he remains in Christ Jesus. He is willing to die at this point, because it will unite him with his Savior. However, he is willing to stay and continue the mission if it is God’s will. Gospel: Matt 20:1-16a Jesus tells the parable of the workers and the vineyard. Throughout the day the foreman hires workers. All of them, even those hired late in the day, receive a full day’s wage. Such is the Kingdom of God, says Jesus.

TWENTY FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 20, 2020
MASSES FOR THE WEEK
“So the last will be first and the first last.” —Matthew 20:16
You’ve heard the saying “it’s not where you start, but how you finish”. This certainly applies to this Bible passage. We have a responsibility not only for our own lives, but for the lives of others as well. We are called to generously share our gifts with others, not hoard them for our own use. Our gratitude and generosity helps us live “God-centered” lives and not “self-centered” lives.

Sunday Gospel Reflections from Bishop Parkes Sunday, September 20, 2020 Called to Evangelize for Christ
“What if I wish to give this last one the same as you? Or am I not free to do as I wish with my own money? Are you envious because I am generous?’ Thus, the last will be first, and
the first will be last.” – Matthew 20: 14-16
If you grew up in a family with siblings, you can probably remember times when you felt that you were treated unfairly relative to your brothers or sisters. “How come she got this, but I only got that?” or “You gave him this, but I only got that!” No doubt it’s one of the trials of parenting. It also happens in in the workplace and sometimes unfortunately even in the church. We read about God’s fairness in the Gospel of Matthew this weekend in the parable of the landowner. The landowner hired workers in the early part of the day for a set day’s wage. Then he hired more at the midday, and then others near the end of the day. When it was time for payment, the workers who were hired last and only worked a few hours were paid the same amount as those who were hired first and worked the whole day. Those who were hired early in the morning were upset claiming they were being treated unfairly. And maybe on the surface they have a case to make. But this parable is about the generosity of God’s love and the Kingdom of Heaven, not about our human understanding of what is fair or unfair. It is a story of our individual callings and how we respond. It is a story of God’s grace and unending love and mercy such that even at the end of our lives, late in the day, we have the chance to accept Christ and with God’s grace, obtain our heavenly reward. God desires that everyone come to know Him and be saved. We, through our baptism, are called to labor for Christ. We are called to witness, to evangelize, to love and forgive, to be a living example of what it means to be a Christian. But, we often fall short of fulfilling that call. For some, it may be years or decades before they have a conversion of heart. Despite their late start, God will take them as they are. Others are faithful to God and His commandments throughout their whole lives. Yet God loves us all. Like the workers who felt they were treated unfairly, we may not understand how all this is possible. But remember, God’s ways are not our ways. And for that, we should be grateful. - Bishop Gregory Parkes

All Parishioners Please Note: Recent News Events Prompt Changes to Increase Security and Health Practices
Hospitality ministers at a recent meeting were instructed to lock the church doors when weekend Masses begin and, effective September 26, the front door while the celebrant is reading or singing the Collect.
This means that all doors will be locked at about five minutes after Masses begin, and no one will be able to gain entry to the Church. Signs directing latecomers to the front door have been removed.
All exits except the front door have crash bars so anyone can exit the church building at any time, but he or she will not be able to re-gain entry. The main (front) door is locked and unlocked with a knob, so hospitality ministers guarding that door can and will unlock it to grant exit if requested. Hospitality ministers were firmly directed to open the door for no one to enter after the doors have been locked.
Also, for the safety and good health of all, hospitality ministers will be urging parishioners to move to the middle of pews. Doing so will maximize space in pews available to others. This practice is intended to reduce “climbing over” people at the end of pews and needlessly breaking the physical distancing protocol so important to limiting the spread of Covid-19.
The heightened security is prompted by recent attacks throughout the United States on Catholic churches, statues and images, including the minivan crash through the front door of Our Lady Queen of Peace July 13 in Ocala.
The Collect is the opening prayer which the celebrant begins with “Let us pray” early in the Mass, about 5 minutes after he arrives at the altar. It follows the Penitential Act (Kyrie, I Confess, or Lord Have Mercy) and “Gloria” when there is one..
