Term 2 is certainly flying by! We have already celebrated many special
events including school photos, Mother’s Day stall, First Aid training for
students and staff, National Simultaneous Story time and special recess,
Biggest Afternoon Tea, Blue Building excursion to ‘Possum Magic’
performance and NAPLAN!
NAPLAN
NAPLAN tests for students in Years 3 and 5 were held over Weeks 3 and
4. Students have been supported in the participation of the tests in a
calm and professional way by our teachers and SSOs. Results will be
delivered to the school and forwarded to families toward the end of
Term 3.
School Uniform
Now that the winter cold and wet weather is here, please remember to
dress your children in school uniform. This includes our school colour
code windcheater jackets and jumpers. Please note that hoodies are
not part of our school uniform. If they need to wear non-colour code
jackets for warmth then they need to have no large logos or other
slogans on them please. Remember to always use a marker to NAME all
jackets and jumpers (which often get taken off during the day) so
clearly named items will make it easier to return to you. We currently
have a lot of lost property in the front office.
Remember Friday is a School Pupil Free Day
This Friday is our Pupil Free Day and staff will be attending on-site training
session around moderating and assessing students learning against
Australian Curriculum standards. Teachers will be working collaboratively
to compare and discuss and also moderate student work samples. This
helps ensure consistency across year levels in our school when
allocating grades for our students.
Kind Regards,
Julie Stockdale- Head of Junior School

Selway
After I finished high school I didn’t
know what job I wanted to have! At
first I thought I’d like to work on
submarines until I worked out that I
don’t particularly like the things that
eat you in the ocean. Then I thought
that I’d like to work in a big office in
a Law Firm in Adelaide. I tried that
out but when the highlight of your
day is going to buy the Christmas
decorations and not your actual job
I knew it wasn’t going to work out.
Finally, I went to help some students
at a school and it turns out that I
really enjoyed it. I liked it enough to
go to University for a long time and
here I am, teaching today! It’s okay
to try different things and see what
works for you! Nearly ten years later I
still love my job. There is something
about teaching that is just magic!
Along the road of life I have lived in
lots of places across South Australia
but my family and I are now Gawler
locals. I have two children and
neither of them want to be
teachers! Sigh!

Students experienced the Welcome to Country,
delivered by Jack Buckskin and a welcome
dance was performed while he played the
digeridoo. Many stalls provided information and
opportunities for the children to experience
different parts of our community including an
Ambulance, Wildlife and Health. They also were
able to paint rocks and canvases, enjoy the
photo booth and get out their energy on a
jumping castle. We all had a great day.
As part of
Reconciliation Week
our ATSI students
invited a friend to the
Gawler Community
Fun Day.
Each year we take the
students so they can
experience ATSI culture
and speak with
community members
about the Kaurna way.
Our Junior School is looking
forward to our first
2019 Special Lunch on
Friday 14 June.
Notes will be going home this
week.

On Thursday 23rd of May, the Junior School hosted a very successful
Biggest Afternoon Tea for the Parent Community. Ms Valley and the choir
welcomed everyone with their beautiful singing voices. Parents and family
members were then treated to a lovely spread of tasty goodies all served
by our wonderful year 5/6 students. Everyone had a chance to catch up
over a cup of coffee. To finish the afternoon, the guests were treated with
a special dance about friendship by Miss Peta’s and Miss Georgie’s
classes. Thanks to our special guests for attending and raising funds for
such an important cause!

We are excited to be taking part in the
2019 Woolworths Earn & Learn program.
During the previous campaign, we were able to purchase some great
resources with the points we earned, thanks to you.
From now until June 25th 2019, you can collect stickers at Woolworths
that go towards Earn & Learn points. For every $10 you spend at
Woolworths (excluding the purchase of tobacco, liquor and gift cards),
you will receive a sticker. These stickers can then be given to your
children to collect on a special sticker sheet. Once it is completed, they
can simply bring it back here to school or you can drop them into our
local Woolworths collection box.
The more points we earn, the more we can redeem from a choice of
over 10,000 educational resources including mathematics and English
resources, art & crafts materials and much, much more!
We are grateful for your support and look forward to a successful
program. If you have any questions, please ask at School.
Class 4:12 with Ms Annie & Mr Singh
This term in classroom 4:12 we have been visiting the Agricultural area to
see the animals. The students have been to see the goats, alpacas, sheep,
cows and chickens. They have been feeding the animals and learning
about how they grow. Our class has been looking at what animals need to
stay alive and healthy. They have been growing in confidence and now
some of our students are patting the animals to feel their fur.
Mathematics- Subitising We have also been exploring new learning in mathematics. Our class has been
using 5 and 10 frames to subitise a group of counters. This is when you are able to
look at a group of items and know exactly the amount without counting. Similar to
using a dice and knowing the number without counting the dots.
Room 42:3 years 4/5 have travelled
back in time when only the
indigenous Australians were living in
Australia.
We travelled back over 66 000 years
ago when Australia was surrounded
by land bridges, which made it easy
for Aboriginals to travel in and out of
Australia without the need for of
boats.
We travelled back 41 000 years ago
to the time of ‘Mungo Man’ and
found out that it was one of
Australia’s earliest inhabitant.
When travelling back in time we
were introduced to all the different
tribes spread across Australia. In
total there were over five hundred
tribes which all together spoke over
250 different types of languages.
When we travelled back in time we
looked at which tribe lived in the
same area as we do. They
discovered that the Kaurna people
lived where we are today.
Travelling back in time was
exhausting, but the one thing we
must remember is that the Kaurna
tribe were the original custodians of
the land and we as Australians must
acknowledge their history and
culture.
Australia’s Land Bridges
A pink alpaca with a short neck
made a brief appearance much
to the delight of many.
Our Reception classes made
these amazing Alpacas from
the book.
At Recess time we made our
own maracas.
On the 22nd of May each class in the Junior
School simultaneously read Alpacas with
Maracas by Matt Cosgrove. This annual
event, facilitated by the Australian Library and
Information association utilises an Australian
picture book and aims to promote the value
of reading and literacy. Our children enjoyed
the story and were visited by our very own
alpaca’s thanks to Mrs. Bolton and her Year 9
students!
