On Tuesday morning, K-1-2 participated in the Infants Choral Speech section of the 71st City of Tamworth Eisteddfod. Lead by Mrs Pearson, the Kindergarten children performed two pieces - “Countdown” and “T’was the night before school”. They were awarded first place with a mark of 86. Our Year 2 group performed next with “On the Ning Nang Nong” and “My Teacher on Saturday”. Mrs Cassidy was impressed with their use of gestures and their clear and projected voices. Mrs Sharkey was very happy with their second place. Well done to our Infants groups. On Wednesday it was the Primary students turn. Our 3-4 classes (Stage 2) performed “Furs and Feathers” and “Reading Bug Explorer” under the guidance of Mrs Gooch. It was a very competitive item with seven schools involved. Nemingha came third, which was a wonderful achievement. Our last group were students from Mrs Webb’s and Mrs Reid’s classes. They performed “Dreamtime Dreaming” and the very funny “Dad and the doctor’s surgery”. It also was a very competitive item but our senior choir “sealed the deal” and came first in this section. Congratulations to all our students and in particular our choral speech teachers Mrs Pearson, Mrs Sharkey, Mrs Gooch and Mrs Reid, who provided a wonderful opportunity for our students. Next week our Primary choir will be performing in the very competitive choral music section on Tuesday 12 June at the Town Hall. Parents are most welcome to attend for an entry fee of $5. Visitors will need to be seated at 10am and the session should be completed by 11.30am.

The following notes have been sent home this week:

Selected studentsWizard of Oz performers - citizens of Emerald City.

" Notes to be returned by Friday 8 June

Mixed Netball Cup - Thursday 28 June. " Notes to be returned by Monday 25 June

We’re all very proud of our schoolChristopher Jackson, Principal

This is a copy of my Principal’s address at last week’s assembly

School pride is very important, for many different reasons.Yesterday I asked our Year 6 class why they were so good at being able to work well together ? I didn’t want the answers then and there but later on in the day. A few have got back to me with some interesting answers but one over-arching fact is they are proud of their school and themselves.

School pride makes the average student want to come to school. It makes the school feel less like school and more of a fun place to be. It’s not only the special events like the excursion Stage 2 went on yesterday, or Musica Viva performance that we had on Monday that allow students to have positive experiences at school but it’s also the engaging activities and lessons in the classroom that makes our school an exciting place to learn.

School pride is reflected in our behaviour, in our daily work, in how we wear our uniform and it’s even what we do outside school too.

I have been into every classroom over the past three weeks to teach Musica Viva and I have to say every class was a pleasure to teach.

You were eager to learn, engaged in the activities that we did and you were all certainly well behaved.

I know at times we all fail in some aspect in our lives. It’s human nature. We all are naughty from time to time, but realising your mistake, accepting it’s your fault and doing something about it is what makes you a better person.

You might notice that I’m wearing the Nemingha sports shirt. I wear this with pride, usually on Fridays. You might also

notice that some staff have special Nemingha shirts that they wear on other days. That’s the staff’s acknowledgement that we work in the best primary school in Tamworth and we are proud of that.

The P&C have a wonderful clothing pool here and I know they have provided new elastic ties for the girls, and I encourage everyone to wear their ties to school every day, but particularly next week when we are representing the school at the eisteddfod.

I have noticed that a number of the school hats are looking very tired. They have faded and in some cases ripped. As hats are a very important part of the school uniform I encourage everyone to replace their tired, worn-out school hat and buy a new one. How proud is this new student at Nemingha.

It starts with how you greet the day. If you believe in yourself and have dedication and pride, you’ll be a winner. Your day will be great.

There are many examples of pride that we have here at Nemingha.

I see them all in front of me.

Biggest Afternoon Tea

Thank you to the Year 6 children and their parents for providing the yummy treats for our Biggest Afternoon Tea held last Friday. Also thank you to the parents, families and friends who came and supported the event and donated so generously.

We raised $267 and this will go to the Cancer Foundation for research.

SRC initiativeThe last Wednesday of every month will be a ‘Nudy Foody’ Day. The one we held last week was very successful and when the SRC members checked the bins at the end of the

day there was very little rubbish in them. Our next Nudy Foody day will be Wednesday 27 June.

If you would like to know more about what our SRC is doing, you can find minutes of all our meetings on the school’s web site. Go to Curriculum & activities - Student leadership - Student Representative Council.

Students travel back in timeStudents in Year 2/3, Year 3/4 and Year 4 stepped back in time last week to discover two of Tamworth’s historic buildings – the Powerstation Museum and Calala Cottage.

Did you know ...Did you know that this is the third Nemingha Public School?

During the excursion students participated in a lesson in the old Moonbi schoolhouse, toured Tamworth’s first mayor’s home, stepped inside Tamworth’s oldest surviving building and saw many electrical appliances that great-grandparents used to use before Thermomixes, computers and automatic washing machines. In history lessons, students will be learning more about how Tamworth and schooling has

changed over the last 200 years and we hope this excursion has sparked a lot of interest in the topic. Below are some comments from students in Year 3/4 about the experience:

We got to use the dip pens at Calala Cottage and write our names with ink.

– JemmaWe saw a machine where when you pressed a button, electricity would be created and go up the wires.

– WalterWe saw a little school at Calala Cottage and two boys were given the cane (not really).

– MontanaThank you to Mrs Bracken, Mrs Crocker, Mrs Moss, Ms Lane and Mrs Flemming for accompanying students on the excursion and helping to maximise students’ learning whilst at the venues.A special thanks to the volunteers at the Powerstation Museum and Calala Cottage for making the experience so friendly, informative and engaging for the students. We

Do you know which building in Tamworth is named after Vincent Guy Kable? Or where the iron for the lattice railway bridge over the Peel River came from? Students in Class 3/4 do, and showcased some of this learning with their assembly item last Friday. In history, students have been learning about important places and historical buildings in Tamworth and how they have changed. We borrowed books about Tamworth from our school library, used the internet and information gathered at home to share interesting facts about places such as the hospital, post office and train station.Students also performed short dances they choreographed themselves in groups. They tried to use different directions, spaces and formations and different height levels. Well done Class 3/4 on an entertaining item!

highly recommend visiting these venues with your family leading up to Tamworth’s bicentenary. There’s so much to explore and learn about our past!
