Ancon 500 System Stainless SteelThe stainless steel Ancon 500 System isrecommended for applications that demandcorrosion resistance and a maintenance-freelife, or where an attractive, polished finish isrequired. Stainless steel bars in nine diameterscan be supplied, in most cases, in lengths upto 6 metres. Performance details are shown onpage 10 and the availability of each size of baris given on page 11. The system can beextended over the maximum bar length by theinclusion of couplers or anchor discs. The forkconnectors and couplers are designed to allowadjustments to be made to the system lengthwithout the need for turnbuckles.

Surface finish is usually an important factor inapplications using stainless steel. Ancon barsare bright drawn as standard but can be handpolished if required. The stainless steel forks

and locking nuts can be supplied electro-polished, satin-polished or hand polished. Thephotographs below provide a good indicationof the available finishes; actual finishes maydiffer slightly. Couplers and anchor discs aresupplied with a smooth machined finish asstandard, and can be satin-polished or handpolished when required. All available finishesand order codes are shown on page 13.

Isolation SystemIsolation material is supplied as standard withthe stainless steel system to enable its fixingto a connecting plate of a dissimilar metal. Each stainless steel fork connector is suppliedwith two clear, self-adhesive, PET (polyester)washers to be applied around the fixing holeeither side of the structure. Stainless steel pinsfeature a PTFE coating around the barrel.

ANCON COMPRESSION SYSTEMSTo complement the Tension System range,Ancon designs and manufacturesCompression Systems. These systems usethe same fork connectors and locking nuts asthe Tension System but use high strengthtubes instead of bars. They are available inboth carbon and stainless steels in a varietyof sizes and finishes. To enable Ancon todesign a compression system the followinginformation is required:

 Pin to pin dimension

 Applied system load

 Material and surface finish required

SYSTEM COMPONENTSThe wide range of components available canbe used to create a variety of assemblies, fromsimple tie bars to complex bracing systemsinvolving several bars joined at one point.

Fork Connectors & Locking NutsAncon fork connectors are supplied with alocking nut which provides a neat transitionfrom bar to fork. Forks and their locking nutshave left or right hand threads, and aresupplied complete with a pin. They arestamped with the size and either the letter R or L to identify the hand of the thread.

The locking nuts firmly lock the bar to the forkand ensure that the connection remainssecure. The internally threaded section of thelocking nut is recessed to allow the threadedend of the bar to be hidden when theinstallation is complete.

Adjustments to the length of the system canstill be made after installation without aturnbuckle, by loosening the locking nut androtating the bar. The extent of this adjustmentdepends on the size of the bar, but will rangefrom ±9mm for an Ancon 500/8 to ±45mm foran Ancon 360/56.

Carbon steel forks and locking nuts arezinc plated as standard. Stainless steel forksand locking nuts are electro-polished asstandard and can also be supplied satin orhand polished.

Each stainless steel fork is supplied with twoclear, self-adhesive, PET (polyester) washers toisolate the system from a connecting plate of adissimilar metal.

PinsThe pins are a two-part construction and onceinstalled are flush with the fork. The installationrequires a twin-pin driver. Two driver bits of theappropriate size are supplied with each Anconsystem. This type of fixing, known as ‘SnakeEyes’*, allows a high torque to be achievedwithout damage to the pin.

The female section of the pin is locatedthrough the fork connector and temporarilyheld in position. A second driver is then usedto wind the male section into position creatinga secure connection.

Stainless steel pins are supplied with a PTFEcoating around the barrel, as illustrated, toisolate the system from a connecting plate of adissimilar metal.

Anchor DiscsAnchor discs allow up to eight bars to beconnected together. They can be used at thecentre of conventional cross bracing, or whereseveral bars need to be connected at onepoint. Anchor discs are machined from plateand can be supplied polished or coated tomatch the surface finish of the tie bars. Anconcan design and manufacture plates in specialshapes to replace standard anchor discs andsuit the aesthetic requirements of anapplication.

Page 7: Tension and Compression Systems

Tie BarsTie bars have a right-hand thread at one endand a left-hand thread at the other. Flats arepressed into the bar close to each end. Theseallow the bar to be screwed into the forkconnectors and adjustments to be made atany time after assembly. Neither couplers norturnbuckles will be required for applicationsusing a single bar between two forks. The baris correctly installed when all threads arehidden within the locking nut.

The availability of each size of bar is given on page 11. All bars are cut to a tolerance of±2mm of the specified length.

Carbon steel bars are available either untreated, with the electrodeposited zinc coatingFe//Zn12//A to EN 12329 or are hot-dipgalvanised to EN 1461.

Stainless steel bars are bright drawn asstandard or hand polished when required.

Compression SystemsAncon designs and manufactures CompressionSystems which comprise the standard forkconnectors and pins shown on page 6 andhigh strength tubes, rather than the tie bars, shown above. The same selection of materialsand surface finishes are available. For moreinformation please contact Ancon.

CouplersCouplers have right and left hand threads andare used in applications where more than onetie bar is required between forks. They aresupplied with a locking nut for each end of thecoupler. Adjustments to the length of thesystem can still be made after installation, byloosening the locking nut and rotating the bar.

Couplers are machined from bar and can havethe provision for a hanger to be fitted to limitthe deflection of bars of 16mm diameter orgreater. If a hanger is required a lug is weldedto the coupler. Stainless steel couplers canbe supplied with a polished finish to matchthe system.

Tension and Compression Systems

APPLICATIONSAncon has supplied Tension and CompressionSystems to many structures and buildings. The wide range of components can be used tocreate a variety of assemblies, from simple tiebars to complex bracing systems involvingseveral bars joined at one point. The followingapplications demonstrate the variety of uses.

Timber ConstructionA combination of timber and steel can use the best properties of each material andachieve a cost-effective and attractive design.Ancon Tension Systems can be connected totimber compression members, and if highloads are involved, several bars can be usedtogether.

CanopiesCanopies are frequently supported from aboveto provide unobstructed access below. Ancontension bars transfer the load from the front ofthe canopy back to the main structure or to amast for free standing canopies.

Roof StructuresTrusses and lattice frames which support roofscan benefit from the replacement of tensionmembers with the Ancon system. This willallow generous site adjustments to be made to accommodate inaccuracies within theframe. This would not be possible with aconventionally bolted frame.

8

Page 9: Tension and Compression Systems

Stainless Steel SystemsStainless steel is used for applications where a maintenance-free life is important or where a high quality polished finish is required. This can be particularly impressive when used inconjunction with large areas of glazing.

Cross-BracingThe use of anchor discs in cross-bracedpanels will allow bars to lie in the same plane. This removes the need to offset bars, with thedisc providing an interesting design feature forthe panel.

Glazed StructuresThe passage of light is normally a vitalconsideration in the design of glazed structures.

The small profile of the Ancon Tension Systemensures the maximum transmission of lightwhile enhancing the overall appearance of thestructure.

SPECIFYING AND ORDERINGAncon Tension Systems are supplied as fullsystems and are not available as individualcomponents.

System lengths are measured between thecentres of the pins in the forks. The barlengths are shown in the table on page 11and should be considered when determiningthe system length.

Electrodeposited zinc coating Fe//Zn12//A toEN 12329 on bars and discs will provide someprotection against corrosion, but is onlyintended to be used for systems which areinternal installations. Hot-dip galvanising toEN 1461 will provide greater protection butshould be considered as only part of theoverall protection treatment. Stainless steelaffords the greatest protection and does notrequire any further treatment.

The Ancon Tension System can be specifiedas follows: System / size / system length /material / finish.

A fully polished Ancon 500 stainless steelsystem using 16mm diameter bar, 2750mmbetween the pins would be specified as:-Ancon 500/16/2750/SS/6. The material andfinish codes are from the adjacent table.

INSTALLATION GUIDANCEIt is important to follow Ancon's installationinstructions, supplied with each system, toensure that the Tension System meets theperformance criteria.

The locking nuts should be fully screwed ontothe bar at each end and the bar screwed intothe forks using an open ended spanner of thecorrect size. When the requiredsystem length is reached, thelocking nuts must be turned back to the fork and tightenedusing soft touch pliers for Ancon 500/8 to 12 or a hook spanner for Ancon 500/16 and above and the Ancon 360 System.

When the installation is complete, all threadsshould be hidden within the locking nut. If thethread is visible, the bar is not sufficientlyengaged in the fork and would need to beadjusted.

Each fork is supplied with a locking nut and pin to enable fixing to a connecting plate oranchor disc.

The installation requires a twin-pin driver. Twodriver bits of the appropriate size are suppliedwith each Ancon system. This type of fixing, known as ‘Snake Eyes’*, allows a high torqueto be achieved without damage to the pin.

OTHER ANCON PRODUCTS

Wall Ties and Restraint FixingsAncon’s standard range includes cavity wallties for all types of construction includingtraditional brick/block, thin-joint blockwork andtimber or steel frames. Many fixings can besupplied within twenty-four hours of receivingan order. Bespoke wall ties can be ordered byusing a simple reference system for the head, shank and tail of the tie.

Masonry Support SystemsMasonry cladding on steel or concrete framedstructures is normally supported from astainless steel support system, positionedabove the horizontal movement joints. Ancondesigns solutions for all conditions including thesupport of special masonry features. The rangeincludes the standard AnconOptima systemconsisting of short lengths of angle andinterchangeable brackets of various depths toaccommodate variations in cavity width on site.

Masonry ReinforcementAncon AMR Masonry Reinforcement andAncon Windposts are designed to provideadditional lateral support for panels ofbrickwork. Windposts can be installed intoeither the inner leaf of blockwork or into thecavity, leaving the blockwork undisturbed.Ancon AMR is a fabricated and flattenedstainless steel and carbon steel reinforcement, which locates in the bed joint to strengthen awall. Parapet Posts are used as verticalsupport for brickwork in either parapet orspandrel panels.

Insulated Balcony ConnectorsAncon Isolan connectors join external concretebalconies to internal concrete floor slabs. Usedto minimise cold bridging, they providecontinuity to the thermal insulation. Standardsystems, comprising rigid CFC-free polystyreneinsulation and duplex stainless steel shearreinforcement, suit most depths of cantileveredand simply supported balconies. Unique to theIsolan system, conventional reinforcing bars areused to provide the tension and compressionreinforcement.

Shear Load ConnectorsAncon DSD and ESD Shear Load Connectorsare used to transfer shear across expansionand contraction joints in concrete. They aremore effective at transferring load and allowingmovement to take place than simple singledowels, and can be used to eliminate doublecolumns at structural movement joints inconcrete frames.
