Executive summaryn Over 600,000 people live within a 30 minute peak time recruitment
catchment serving manufacturers and similar firms in Telford.
n This recruitment catchment has a relatively stable and broad age structure with forecast growth of 1% among those of working age over the next ten years. This is above the forecast increase for the West Midlands or England.
n Manufacturing employment is comparatively high in the catchment with a large proportion of jobs involved in machinery manufacture and engineering related activities compared to the region or England.
n There is a high proportion of employees with skilled trades in the workforce.
n Professional and semi-professional staff are more likely to be involved in science, engineering and technology related positions here than the regional and national pattern suggests.
n The employee training participation rate is above regional and national average. This is particularly the case among employees in the production industries.
n Proportionately more of the catchment’s working age population hold NVQs at levels 1, 2 and 3 than in the regional and national workforce.
n School attainment results in the catchment outperform national average when considering those obtaining 5 or more GCSEs graded A* to C and average GCSE and A level scores.
n Some 133,000 students attend nine universities serving the catchment of which around 44,500 graduate annually.
n The proportion of students enrolled on engineering and technology courses and in science subjects is higher than national incidence.
n The cost of employing staff in Telford is competitive against many UK locations whilst maintaining a large choice and quality across most recruitment requirements.

About the location reviewIntroduction
The following Location Review covering Telford’s recruitment catchment provides a thorough and independent assessment of the demographic profile, local labour market conditions, target recruitment groups and extent of recruitment potential for employers. The contents of the report are our own and without editorial influence of Telford and Wrekin Council or any third party.
All data in the report relate to the current observed Journey To Work Area (JTWA) that the majority of staff working across a range of manufacturing jobs in Telford travel from unless otherwise stated. The JTWA takes account of travel to work methods, competing employment locations and transport conditions in the area.
The data draws on official statistics, adjusted and presented to reflect the true recruitment area for employers in Telford. It is the most relevant and up to date source of information on the workforce scale and characteristics in the area.
More detailed information including a comprehensive set of demographic, workforce, training, skills and labour market cost data for the area is available from the authors or Telford and Wrekin Council.

HGV drivetime zones
Most of the UK’s largest and busiest ports and airports are reachable within the statutory four and a half hour HGV driving limit from Telford, including the busiest seaports of the Humber (Grimsby and Immingham) and the busiest freight handling airport, Heathrow.
Some major ports and airports lie within a two hour HGV drivetime. Included among these are the UK’s second and fourth largest freight handling airports, East Midlands and Manchester and the UK’s fifth busiest seaport, Liverpool Docks.
Not included in the diagram but of equal importance is Hams Hall Railhead, 10 miles north of Birmingham Airport. This major rail hub is well within an hour’s HGV drive of Telford.
Other major distribution hubs, such as those near Daventry, Leicester and Northampton on the M1, are within a two hour HGV drivetime. Swindon and Slough along the M4 corridor fall within a three hour HGV drivetime.

Summaryn Most labour costs across manufacturing and distribution activities
in the catchment serving Telford compare favourably against both regional and national pay rates.
n The most significant cost savings against national pay scales are achievable when recruiting to the bulk of general positions in warehousing, IT and clerical support posts. Clerical salaries fall below regional average.
n All of these categories allow savings of at least 5% against national rates.
n Within the region, Telford offers a relatively low cost location for management level staff in the manufacturing environment and for a range of skilled trades.
n These cost savings are made more attractive by the higher than average skillsets and occupational profile available in the catchment.
