Telford and Wrekin Council was commissioned by the NHS to deliver a project to improve the health and wellbeing of the male population (Aged 30 – 74) in the borough by encouraging inactive men into sport/physical activity and increasing their awareness of associated health issues.

Working in partnership with AFC Telford United as the hub site, “Tackle your Health” was offi cially launched on 20th January 2011. The project has already

engaged 300 men, 100+ are regularly partici-pating in the project’s activities with others signposted to a variety of services.

Supported by two Health Trainers, men have made signifi cant lifestyle/behaviour changes and have gone from being inactive to participating in: circuit-based gym, football “Kickabouts’, Cardio Tennis, badminton (working together with

Badminton England and the ‘No Strings’ sessions) and swimming sessions. Tackle Your Health has developed strong links with the FA Mars ‘Just Play football scheme’ to jointly pro-mote coached ‘kickabout’ sessions. This innovative approach has proved very successful as the project has inspired men to under-take their own activities.

Tackle Your Health pro-motes other sports that the ‘target group’ can access e.g. working closely with Telford Hornets Rugby Club adult returner programme.

The project’s social marketing approach has attracted men from all walks of life. By offering regular health checks, support and initiatives the project has empow-

ered them to focus on their health and activity levels. Examples include attending football training sessions with AFC Telford Manager Andy Sinton, organised cooking mornings and playing Tennis at the new Centre,

The Tackle Your Health staff are proactive in getting men ‘signed up’ to the project, working in partnership with local companies and attending AFC fi xtures. The project has its own website which offers comprehensive information about the project includ-ing short videos, Twitter and blog feeds.

TELFORD STUTTER AFTER PROMISING

STARTIt’s been a difficult month for AFC Telford United.

The Bucks beat Alfreton Town 1-0 at the New Bucks Head on 27th September through Chris Sharp’s goal but that remains the team’s last victory at the time of writing with Telford now winless in six matches. That sequence has included four defeats – against Barrow, Ebbsfleet, Forest Green and Gateshead – whilst the Bucks did at least take a point apiece from the matches with Hayes and Yeading and Kidderminster Harriers.

LEGENDS EVENING DATE ANNOUNCED

AFC Telford United have announced the date for their fourth ‘Hall of Fame’ evening to be held at the White-house Hotel on Wednesday November 23rd.

This event will see four ‘Legends’ of Telford United FC inducted into the AFC Telford United Hall of Fame and the legends will be guests of honour at the Awards Ceremony. They will then join the existing legends which include Jack Bentley, Stan Storton, Antone Jo-seph and Lee Carter in the very-exclusive club.The evening will again be compered by BBC Shrop-shire’s James Bond. Mr Bond will introduce each of the legends and host a Questions and Answer session with them before they are inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Jonathan Martin, event organiser on behalf of Telford United Supporters Trust said: “The Legends nights are always very moving and memorable occasions for everyone present. I have no doubt that the 2011 event will again be a fantastic evening and I would urge you to buy your tickets as soon as possible as I do expect a lot of interest.

SINTON SIGNS NEW CONTRACT

AFC Telford United recently announced that Andy Sinton has signed a contract extension which will keep him at the New Bucks Head until May 2014. The deal represents the longest contract ever awarded to a man-ager since the club formed in 2004.Speaking about the development, Chairman Lee Carter has expressed his delight at Sinton’s decision to commit his immediate future to the club. “This contract shows that the club is determined to keep progressing,” Carter said. “I’m delighted that Andy has agreed this deal because he is the foundation of everything we’re trying to do as a club. We’ve made phenomenal progress in terms of our professionalism since he arrived and we want to get a foothold in our new division and then build on that.”Carter also revealed that the contract could have been agreed sooner - and would have been had time allowed. “We informally offered an extension to Andy back in April but it got moved to the bottom of the in-tray simply because we’ve had such a busy period. Once we got down to detail it was actually a very quick process. We’re delighted to have Andy here and he’s delighted to be here too.”For his part, Sinton has echoed Carter’s sentiment and reiterated his desire to lead AFC Telford United into the Football League. “I wanted to see where the club would be heading in the next few years and I’ve been really impressed with Lee and all the staff,” Sinton said. “I want to manage in the League and the next challenge for me is to get Telford ready to compete for that.”

Around 10,000 have already been advance ordered in the UK, a third of the total global orders to date.

Prices and targets

Prices range from £27,955 up to £39,995 but that hasn’t put customers off even in these recessionary times. About a third of early adopters are expected to be women as Land Rover attempts to target a new audience with its latest model.

Although fashionable and glitzy, both Evoque models are loosely based on the family workhorse, the Land Rover Freelander, but the target sales audience is miles apart and the only common factor is that they are both SUVs and most Evoques will be 4x4s.

However some company car and fleet users will opt for the less taxing 2WD diesel 129 to 133g/km of CO2 Evoque variants, due early next year, and Land Rover sees a sales opportunity in this area where certain fleets

have not been allowed to buy 4x4 vehicles.

You get a flavour of the im-age created for the Evoque from the fact that Victoria Beckham has consulted on some ‘posh spicy’ interior styling treatments so look for a VB special edition in the future. Equestrian star, rugby player’s wife and a ‘Royal’ - Zara Phillips has also one on order.

One of the ‘red carpet’ launches of the Evoque range was held at Harvey Nichols London department store where celebs, WAGs and the wealthy were on hand to welcome the Chelsea tractor home.

But let me assure you, all that glitters in regards to the performance of the Evoque is not fool’s gold – in fact it is a bit of a gem.

Platform and popularity

It is loosely related to the highly capable Land Rover Freelander because it uses more or less the same plat-

form, the same All Terrain Response system for 4WD versions, significantly revised versions (60% of compo-nents have been changed) of the 2.2-litre turbodiesel unit and a Ford 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine. And it is built in Britain which is good for jobs.

The Evoque has a marginally shorter wheelbase than the Freelander, so the rear seat legroom and boot space suf-fers. But it is a shade wider than the Freelander, offer-ing more wallet or handbag space, and has shorter front and rear overhangs so the 4,355mm length is more compact for Sloane Street parking. It is also the lightest ever Land Rover model.

Around 80% of customers will go for one of the 2.2-litre, four cylinder turbodiesel engine options with 150 or 190bhp, most will be 4WD models and in the longer term ,there might be a sales bias towards the more user-friendly five door Evoque but currently the less practi-cal but racy looking three door Coupe is holding its own with a 50-50 sales split.

There are Pure, Prestige and Dynamic levels of trim and equipment with most buyers to date going for the top spec and adding items from the comprehensive list of extra cost goodies – like the £450 panoramic glass roof for instance which has attracted 80% of buyers so far.

Emissions and running costs

Put through their paces on the streets of Edinburgh, the country roads and lanes and off roading in the Glens of the Scottish Borders by the UK’s motoring media this week, the Evoques proved completely capable, well balanced, comfortable and spritely.

I tried the most likely best selling Evoque SD4 2.2-litre 190bhp turbodiesel unit with the 6-speed manual gearbox and Dynamic specification which is steeply priced at £37,380.

I also tried the Evoque SD4 Coupe with the same engine; same Dynamic trim level but with the £1,610, 6-speed auto gearbox and this model costs a very hefty £39,990.

Both returned exactly 30.1mpg, significantly down on the 50.2mpg for the Evoque and 44.3mpg for the Coupe official figures. CO2 emissions for this engine are 149g/km with the manual gearbox and 169g/km for the Coupe auto, so VED road tax will be £130 for the manual but £265 in the First Year rate and then £190 per annum after that for the automatic.

So the manual models have a distinct financial edge although the auto is a nicer drive. Benefit-in-Kind company car tax will be a minimum of 22%.

Off road performance

With all wheel drive in use at all times on the road and All Terrain Response available for bad driving conditions on or off road, plus Descent Control for off-roading, the plush Evoques are no soft-ies when it comes to tough going.

They are just as capable and sure-footed as the workhorse Freelander. It is unlikely that Evoque owners are likely to venture too deep into the countryside, off the tarmac or long winding gravel driveways; more likely city shopping or luncheon trips, but the capabilities to cope with severe adverse weather conditions under all circum-stances will be comforting. I rather suspect that trudging through deep snow to the ski slopes will be as severe as it gets for Evoque owners.

Styling and comfort

There has been significant attention paid to making the engines more refined and the traditional diesel engine high noise intrusion has been drastically reduced by additional sound-proofing in the engine compartment. So quiet is it that the wind noise intruding into the vehicle from the very large door mir-rors was more noticeable.

My two test models were fit-ted with 19-inch alloy wheels and I would suggest these are

the best and most comfort-able size to go for as larger wheels tend to unsettle the ride. However style conscious buyers usually think bigger-is-best and I suspect that size will matter in this area and 20-inch wheels will be selected.

The very modern sharp exterior styling, the plush but compact five seater interiors and a very comprehensive level of equipment – too much to list, gives this baby Range Rover all the owner-ship appeal of the larger Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. Expect the styling of the Evoques to become the new vision for the next generation of Range Rovers.

Despite its high price the lux-ury spec Evoque and Evoque Coupe, Land Rover are con-fident their new up-market range will become their best selling models; outselling their current best seller – the Freelander - which has global annual sales of 65,000 units.

So it is just as well the company has the aspirational capability of building 106,000 Evoques a year in this coun-try for world consumption which is good for Great Brit-ain and the Indian industrial conglomerate of Tata, owners of Jaguar/Land Rover.

There’s the ongoing speed camera debate, EVs versus hydrogen/alt-fuels and then there’s winter tyres one – a favourite that surfaces in September every year.

Tyre manufacturers and car-makers like to start push-ing winter tyres and their benefits in cold weather with cold weather approaching, especially with colder winters of late, with a particular focus on braking distances and all-round performance in colder weather.

But drivers frequently counter that winter tyres are little more than an unneces-sary choice in the UK and represent a cash cow for tyre manufacturers.

Last year, demand for winter tyres far outstripped sup-ply and there are ever-more frequent calls to make winter tyre fitment compulsory in the UK – as it is in parts of continental Europe.

With another harsh winter predicted and at least one premium tyre manufacturer ramping up its production of winter tyres from 350,000 to half a million this winter; car-makers and safety organisa-tions pushing winter tyres and harsher winters now, seemingly, the norm, we’ve weighed up both sides of the argument.

So, low-temperature life-sav-ers or pointless pocket-lin-ers? Find out below whether winter tyres are worth the effort, and expense.

What’s the difference be-tween winter and summer tyres?

Winter tyres are as different to summer tyres as black pieces of rubber can be and the differences cover three basic areas: compound, tread and sipes.

In terms of compound, they contain a higher proportion of natural rubber than sum-mer tyres, which means they are softer and more flexible in lower temperatures.

Summer tyres will begin to stiffen and harden at seven degrees Celsius, meaning that rather than key into the road surface, they will ride along the top of the bumps and

grooves of the road. A winter tyres is softer and more flex-ible so will key into the roads surface giving more grip.

Tread pattern is also different on winter tyres because it is much wider than on summer tyres. That means it picks up snow as the tyre comes into contact with it, pressing it into the grooves. That may sound counterintuitive but it actually increases grip be-cause there is a lot of traction between snow and snow.

The final difference is an abundance of sipes – slits in the tyres rubber – that provide more points for the winter tyre to bite into the winter road surface and thus provide more traction and control.

Why not use winter tyres all year round?

The problem with winter tyres is that they do not per-form as well as summer tyres in temperatures of seven degrees Celsius and above.

How well do they work in warmer conditions?

While winter tyres will work in warmer conditions, they’ll bring with them a number of drawbacks as the weather gets hotter.

Their strength in winter is based on their ability to remain soft and flexible in cold conditions however the flipside is that in warm weather, these tyres become even softer and will wear out even quicker as the tempera-ture rises.

Why don’t more drivers use winter tyres?

The statistics provide an overwhelming argument for winter tyre use, however an alarmingly small number of UK motorists fit them during winter months.

That’s because relatively few motorists are aware that win-ter tyres exist or aware at the difference they could make in wintry driving conditions. That’s changing due to tyre safety month and a number of manufacturers and tyre makers who are investing a lot of time and money into increasing exposure for win-ter tyres.

That’s borne from the ad-vantages they bring in cold weather but there will always be the money making argu-ment to counter that point.

Wear, tear and practicality

As well as a lack of educa-tion, motorists are also put off winter tyres because of price, with one set of tyres a year proving costly enough for some.There is also a concern that winter tyres, because they are softer, will wear out faster than summer tyres however there is little evidence to support this theory if winter tyres are used in the correct conditions.

Tyre makers direct winter tyre users to change them as soon as the bad weather has gone because winter tyres perform poorly in warmer weather and impact on fuel economy.

However, if used in appro-priate temperatures, there is little evidence to suggest that they will wear out quicker than summer tyres.

Tyre manufacturers also like to point out that whilst your winter tyres are in use, your summer tyres are in storage and vice versa. That means that only one set is being worn at a time as opposed to the same set being worn down all year round. That in itself throws up another issue of storage space.

Tyres aren’t small and there are four of them which can automatically rule some mo-torists out because they do not have the space for them.

Why are winter tyres more expensive than summer tyres?

Price is perhaps the biggest bugbear when it comes to winter tyres and one of the main reasons critics believe they are little more than a cash cow.

According to Continental, there is no escaping the inflated costs of winter tyres until they become more popular and are produced in similar volumes to summer tyres.

Tim Bailey, head of safety at Continental, said that sum-

mer tyres are far cheaper, per tyre, because they’re produced in much lower vol-umes than regular tyres.

“We produce winter tyres in much lower volumes than summer tyres – so there aren’t the economies of scale with producing winter tyres. As a result they’re more ex-pensive for us to produce.”

Another reason winter tyres are more expensive is because of their compound which is more advanced than summer tyres.

As mentioned, winter tyres use more natural rubber than summer tyres to remain flex-ible and soft in cold tempera-tures. Natural rubber is more expensive than synthetic alternatives, according to Bailey, driving the price of winter tyres up.

Should I buy winter tyres?

According to Continental tyres, drivers are six times more likely to be involved in an accident in winter than in summer months.

There are also a range of figures which show that brak-ing distances are significantly reduced in temperatures below seven degrees Celsius on winter tyres.

In 2010, the mean winter time temperature in the UK was 1.6 degree Celsius, ac-cording to the Met Office and between 1 December and the end of February, tempera-tures never exceeded seven degrees Celsius.

However in autumn 2010 be-tween the 1 September and the 30 November, tempera-tures averaged 8.9 degrees Celsius leaving motorists in a tricky situation when it comes to winter tyres.

Their advantages are obvious in suitable weather condi-tions and if tyres are changed in accordance with tempera-tures they are the obvious choices in terms of safety.

If, however, they are used inflexibly for a set period of time, motorists could see drawbacks in terms of wear and tear, fuel economy and performance in warmer conditions.
