Message from the EditorNow it’s the hottest time of the year. It’s normal to see people turning on air conditioning system for whole day long

at their offices and their houses. Data Centers also have to use a lot of air conditioning system to maintain the environment as defined in industry standards to prevent downtime or system crash.

Data center normally has smart energy utilization and find good ways to handle higher temperature from outside. It is equipped with air conditioning system, cooling system, etc. to ensure that data center will still operate well even in the hottest period. And this also brought me to introduce you with the concept of “Green Data Center” in this volume of Techno Society. This concept is good for energy savings, and also an environmental friendly solution. You will be amazed after reading this.

Another hot topic in Thailand is 3G. Do you know that 3G won’t be run well without good international gateway services? Also we bring you topics like five characteristics of data center you should consider before choosing one, and the readiness of Cloud services in both public and private sectors.

Green Data Center: long term investment for energy and cost Savings

It is unavoidable, when discussing about data center or

green data center, to concern about the big investment involved.

But as you know, for some businesses, data center is critical and

strategic tool to drive the growth.

There are several things you may have to concern when you

want to invest or improve your data center especially in terms of

infrastructure technology to make it more cost and energy savings,

and let your data center run smoothly and with efficiency.

Data center infrastructure in business organization can be

varied in terms of data center connectivity to other systems. This

depends on the proper usage of each organization. When you need

to scale it up, whether in terms of servers, disks, or storages, this

will make the whole system more complicated with different

technologies under the same roof.

Cost and energy savings are now the new factors that drive

the changes in infrastructure of data center in many organizations,

who want to decrease the complexity in managing the systems,

decrease the number of IT staff and allocate to more critical

functions, and decrease the maintenance cost and any other costs

in expanding the systems in the future. Also new business needs

drive to generate more data in various formats from images, videos,

and audios which all lead to more traffic. Moreover some data

or business functions are critical and damages are unacceptable.

During March until May, it is among the hottest period of the

หยดพกของ compressor (ตวท�าความเยน) ท�าใหประหยดพลงงานได

energy usages are normal, and the new breaking records are

announced. And this should be a good time to discuss on how will

we use the energy in a more efficient way, and help in saving them

even when we need it most.

Making the whole infrastructure to be easy to manage and

allows for scalability while running all the operations smoothly and

adaptable for business needs are things we have to concern.

Different data center infrastructures have different capabilities.

If you’re now considering infrastructure investment, you

may have to ask for the best and valuable choice. At least it should

be the one which can support data center scalabilities. This also

includes the organizations that already have their own data centers.

The existing ones may not serve the business needs, and can be

concerned as the major expenses of the organization. They do not

worth for any investment in time, people, expenses or any indirect

expenses.

There are several data center or green data center

infrastructures today. Mostly when designing green data center, we

will concern about the stability, the availability, maintenance costs,

the amount of the investment, the security and the scalability.

Data centers have to provide their services 24/7 so the stability of

the data center is what we really need to design and build it well.

True Internet chose new innovation for energy savings in green data center

Mr. Chainwit Kraprayoon, General Manager of True Internet

Data Center said the efficient green data center innovation will affect

the energy savings of data centers especially during summer in

Thailand, which normally leads to higher usage of electricity.

Good data center must have some efficient solutions to save the

energy consumption.

รบการออกแบบจากทมวศวกรผออกแบบระบบประหยดพลงงานของ

ไอบเอม เพอใหตรงตามมาตรฐานระดบโลก ตงแตการออกแบบโครงสราง

พนฐานทางกายภาพ การตดตงระบบเครอขาย ระบบไฟฟา รวมถงระบบ

ความปลอดภย และระบบท�าความเยนทงหมด ซงจะท�าใหดาตาเซนเตอร

แหงนเปนดาตาเซนเตอรสเขยวทประหยด พลงงานไดมากทสดของ TCCT

ปจจบนบรษทมดาตาเซนเตอรรวมถงพนทสวนขยายคดเปน

พนทกวา 57,000 ตารางฟตทวกรงเทพฯ และปรมณฑล และเพอเปนการ

ตอกย�าความเปนผน�าดานการใหบรการดาตาเซนเตอรในประเทศไทย

กอปรกบการเตบโตของธรกจและความตองการของลกคาทเพมมากขน

TCCT ไดด�าเนนการขยายพนทชน 5 ของบางนาดาตาเซนเตอร

(BNDC) บนเนอท 16,000 ตารางฟต กรนดาตาเซนเตอรของ TCCT มการ

ประยกตใชเทคโนโลย 3C คอ 1. ระบบกกบรเวณทางเดนลมเยน (Cold

Aisle Containment) ชวยประหยดพลงงานใหตแรคโดยกกลมเยนไวและ

ระบายลมรอนออกไป สดทายท�าใหลมรอนกลายเปนลมเยนอกครง

2. ระบบท�าความเยนแบบรวมศนย (Centralized Chiller System) ลดการ

ใชพลงงานกวารอยละ 15 และยงลดการปลอยคารบอนไดออกไซดดวย

และ 3. ระบบดบเพลงปลอดสาร CFC เปนมตรกบสงแวดลอม ไมท�าลาย

ชนบรรยากาศอกดวย

ทงน กรนดาตาเซนเตอรดงกลาวไดรบการออกแบบโดยม ง

สนบสนนการเตบโตทางธรกจ ของ TCCT ทเนนการประหยดพลงงาน และ

การใชโครงสรางไอททมความยดหย นและปรบเปลยนไดตามความ

ตองการ (Dynamic infrastructure) อาท การตดตงระบบพนยก (Raised

Floor), ผนงบฉนวนกนความรอน, ระบบเครองปรบอากาศแบบควบคม

ความชน, ระบบควบคมการเปด-ปดประตอตโนมต, ระบบปองกนอคคภย,

ระบบดบเพลงอตโนมตดวยกาซทเปนมตรกบสงแวดลอม, ระบบเฝาดแล

แจงเตอนอตโนมต, ระบบโทรทศนวงจรปด เปนตน นอกจากโครงสรางไอท

พนฐานแลว ไอบเอมยงเปนทปรกษาในการใชอปกรณตางๆ ภายในดาตา

เซนเตอรทมความสามารถดานการประหยดพลงงานขนสง และไดรบ

การยอมรบในการใชงานในระดบสากล

New innovations chosen by True Internet Data Center include UPS with IGBT technology which bring more efficiencies, decrease the energy loss, and help make stabilities of electricity distribution when comparing with the existing technologies.

Cooling systems with good EER (Energy Efficiency Ration) will increase overall cooling capabilities and help controlling the temperatures as specified, also they can pause the compressor when needed. These help True Internet Data Center to save more on energy consumption for at least 2 years until today.

For the trend of energy consumption in data center, as you know, several organizations now push themselves to save more energy, and True is among them who really concerns and implements green data center.

TCCT drives Green Data Center initiative for energy efficiency

TCC Technology, leading data center and IT infrastructure services provider in Thailand, chose IBM Thailand to manage the infrastructure and internal system in data center. This helped make establishment of Green Data Center initiative in Thailand, and helped clients in energy efficiency and increased in business continuity to support future growth.

Mr. Suwat Punnachaiya, Assistant Managing Director of TCCT said “New data centers of TCCT were designed by engineers from IBM to ensure the highest standard from the physical infrastructure, installation, networking, electricity, security, to the cooling systems. All of these will make them as the most energy saving data centers of TCCT”.

TCCT has set up total (including expansion) of 57,000 square feet of data centers capacity in Bangkok and the vicinity.

5 ป เนองจากดาตาเซนเตอรประกอบดวยเซรฟเวอรและอปกรณตางๆ ท

ตองการใชพลงงานในการประมวลผลจ�านวนมาก

จะเหนไดวา Green Data Center มขอดมากมายทท�าใหตอบโจทย

ทางธรกจไดอยางสมบรณ เพราะชวยลดการลงทน ลดตนทน และลดคา

ใชจายตางๆ ไดด ลดพนทการใชงานของระบบดาตาเซนเตอร บรหาร

This will reflect our leading position in Thailand’s data center market, facilitate the growth of our business, and meet the increasing demands of our customers.

TCCT expanded the 5th floor of Bangna Data Center (BNDC) with more than 16,000 square feet for this Green Data Center initiative. TCCT adopted 3C principle by using 1) Cold Aisle Containment to save more energy for server racks by containing cold air and blowing away hot air, then converting hot air to the cold air 2) Centralized Chiller System which can reduce the energy consumption by 15% and save tons of carbon dioxide emission per year, and 3) CFC-Free fire extinguishing system that does not leave a residue upon evaporation.

This green data center is designed to support TCCT’s growing business through an energy efficiency and dynamic infrastructure with raised floors, heat-resistant wall systems, and humidity controllers, automatic door systems, fire protection systems, environment-friendly fire extinguishing systems, self-activated monitoring alarm systems, and CCTV. Apart from infrastructure design, IBM also provides TCCT with strategic counsel on green electrical system to be used in data centers to ensure the maximum energy savings and align with international standards.

IBM developed green technology for environmental friendly purpose.

IBM always concerns about environmental friendly solutions and energy management in organization. IBM is green technology leader with energy management solutions in hardware, software, and services.

It is estimated that worldwide data centers consume 2% of all energy consumption, and this number will increase to 12% within 2030. Also 50% of operating expenses in data centers are energy related. There’s also a trend indicating that the energy consumption in data centers will double in every 5 year. This is because of servers and equipment in data center require huge amount of energy in processing.

International Gateway to drive for faster Internet connection, moving to real 3G era in Thailand

After a decade of waiting, finally 3G is coming to Thailand. In this 2nd quarter of 2013, Thai people will be able to enjoy 2 Mbps while surfing the Internet while standing still, and up to 384 Kbps if they are moving. This is 2-3 times better than EDGE.

Wireless data communication will bring new services such as on-demand video, social networking, telemedicine, online financial transaction, security applications, online shopping, online storage, Cloud-related services, and many other new generation services which will drive to more and more numbers of Internet connected devices (e.g. controlling home appliances via mobile phone).

Larger bandwidth of mobile operators will help to serve more usages of wireless data communication from laptops, smart phones, tablets, etc. This will also bring country’s competitive advantages in IT infrastructure. There was an estimation that said wireless broadband will help to increase Thailand’s economy by 30 billion baht.

นนจะไปยงเวยดนาม กมพชา เพอรองรบทราฟฟคใหทกประเทศในอาเซยน

สามารถใชบรการจากศนยรวมโครงขายของบรษทไดโดยอสระอยางม

ประสทธภาพ

TCCT has prepared to serve larger bandwidth in the country by improving its data centers. Today 10 GB connection is provided and can be upgraded to 40 GB or faster by just installing additional equipment. This expands the current fiber core IT infrastructure of TCCT.

Apart from that, TCCT also expanded international gateway in various routes to increase the speed of international data communication. Without this, the increasing mobile data usages will lead to more traffic and congestions, and affect the quality of services.

TCCT had extended international gateway to the south to Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Then with the increasing of international trades with the East, it invested more for international gateway to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Hong Kong. This is the first and the shortest distance of fibre optic international gateway among these countries which will provide better and faster data communication in broadband level. This also brought the first connection from Thailand to local exchange of each member country.

In addition, TCCT as part of ADCA (Asia Data Center Alliance) also collaborates among members such as 1- Net (Singapore), AIMS (Malaysia), CMC telecom (Vietnam), HK colo (Hong Kong), and TCCT (Thailand). They can benefit from the Eastern Route, which is regarded as one of the shortest distance connections providing low latency and better performance together with redundancy to ensure that any Cloud Computing can be operated in more stable and faster environment.

Also at the beginning of this year, TCCT signed a collaboration agreement with NTT Communications from Japan to create the most seamless high efficiency, lowest latency network connecting from South East Asia to Tokyo, Japan and then to Chicago, US. Latency for this new route from Bangkok to Tokyo is less than 81 milliseconds, and from Bangkok to Chicago is less than 209 milliseconds. This new route will help support finance/banking and other business sectors that need a shortest response time from US to Bangkok through Tokyo and vice versa.

This expansion will serve more mobile traffic of 3G within Thailand and will also serve more international business transactions for AEC countries in the next few years.

TeleGeography, a world’s leading research company, showed that Internet bandwidth in Indochina region had increased by 15 times within 5 years from 30 Gbps in 2007 to 450 Gbps in 2012.

TCCT has planned to expand its network to cover more on sub-Mekong region staring from Laos, Myanmar, then to Vietnam and Cambodia, so all Asean countries will be efficiently connected with each other via TCCT’s carrier neutral exchange hub.

The growth of Cloud Computing technology is another factor that supports the growth of technology within the organization - the more the Cloud usage, the more the importance of IT professionals.

Cloud Computing gains good recognition from many organizations with more data involved. Many organizations move to Cloud for better performance. But while you can shop from various hardware, software, and security systems .. it’s about IT professionals that are insufficient.

NSTDA Academy, together with SIPA, Mahidol University, NSTDA, Dell Corporation (Thailand), Microsoft (Thailand) and Internet Thailand Plc have joined forces to deliver a new Cloud academy programme.

We have a chance to discuss with Dr. Supachai Tangwongsan, chairman of SIPA, and Dr. Sirichai Kittiwarapong, director of NSTDA Academy about this programme.

Techno Society: How does this programme start?Dr. Supachai (SIPA): Cloud Computing is quite new in IT

industry. It has been gaining acceptance in recent years, while it’s quite hard to find IT professionals who really understand it well. SIPA and NSTDA joined forces with Dell (providing hardware), Microsoft (arranging software and operating systems), CSA (for ideas and opinions), and Mahidol University that helps a lot in setting up this new academic programme.

Dr. Sirichai (NSTDA Academy): Universities have the roles to educate and provide human resources but couldn’t do well in specific technical areas. And we expect that in the near future, private sectors will need to hire foreigners who have experiences in Cloud to serve the industry. NSTDA decided to join with SIPA and Software Park to develop more Cloud Computing professionals. We provide basic and in-depth knowledges from Cloud architecture, design, hardware, networks, and also the security systems.

Techno Society: Will all courses be conducted in English?Dr. Supachai (SIPA): Before I work here at SIPA, I was a vice

Rector of Mahidol University, in which we handled all courses in English, so it was the same as this programme. This is to prepare us for AEC in the next 3 years, and we already have capable professors in this area.

Dr. Sirichai (NSTDA Academy): We strongly support it in English because after the coming of AEC, this programme will also serve other nationalities who will learn Cloud program in Thailand, which is a lot cheaper than other countries.

Techno Society: When will this programme start?Dr. Supachai (SIPA): We started to accept applicants

since March 2013, and the course will start in this coming June. The programme will take 1 year and will require only Saturday and Sunday to study. Programme fee is around THB 200,000.

Dr. Sirichai (NSTDA Academy): We also have plans to evaluate our programme and improve the courses in the near future. And in the next 6 months we may start to accept the application again.

Techno Society: Would you like to say somethingto those who are interested in Cloud Academy?Dr. Supachai (SIPA): This programme is open for those who

have degrees in ICT, Computer Science or Computer Engineering. We recommend that you should have some experiences in this field. We expect to see young and energetic people but it’s good for senior level too because the courses are arranged only on Saturday and Sunday. We require those who can work on weekdays and study hard on weekends.

All markets will experience expansion by international players which in the case of Singapore could reach as much as 50% of all data centre space by 2016. The impact of Amazon Web Services’s Redshift product is a force yet to be reckoned with by data centre owners.

Q : Due to the economic uncertainty in Europe, are there any effects to data center industry worldwide? Any implication for South-East Asia’s data center to take more important role or opportunity? What are your thoughts?

A : In contrast to the general economic problems that have been encountered in the Eurozone, data centre businesses have actually prospered over the past five years, and investment and expansion has been sustained in the four tier 1 markets: London, Amsterdam, Paris and Frankfurt. Although we have evidenced lower outsourcing activity by data centres in other areas of Europe BroadGroup believes there is still untapped demand.

Another development has been the evolution of a European “power hinterland” stretching from Iceland to Finland, where countr ies with substantial resources of renewable energy are offering data centres 15 year fixed price contracts. BroadGroup believes a migration of location insensitive facilities will continue to northern countries where free air cooling, and other innovative water based cooling systems are yielding cost effective results.

Enterprises in Europe who have not already done so are assessing market entry into Asian markets where activity is still relatively strong and expansionary. In doing so they will be looking for IT hubs to manage operations and systems, and South-East Asia could stand to benefit from these opportunities.

Techno Society: How did you start Changkui.com?

Mr. Passakorn - Changkui.com: I normally had to drive to Phuket and it’s hard for me to find some interesting radio programs to listen on the way. I finally knew about Podcast and learned about uncountable good content there. At first, I tried to do my own Podcast by using iPod to record my voices, and we started to shoot the videos just in the last three years.

During the very first episodes, I asked my friends to talk about things they knew well. I have my telecommunication engineering degree so most of our talks were about technologies. But sometimes I had invited doctor to talk about health, and a friend who loves Volkswagen Beetle to share on how to maintain this lovely car. From then, more and more listeners were joining, and more people knew us.

Techno Society: How do you pick a good content for Changkui.com?

Mr. Passakorn - Changkui.com: We always choose to make it fun. We choose the ones we can talk and share for at least an hour. We won’t talk about anything we don’t really know about. We have no script, and no content prepared. So we have to find our own content.

Techno Society: What is the most successful content that make people know about Changkui.com?

Mr. Passakorn - Changkui.com: One is about Munkong Gadget, a headset shop that has higher sales volume of headsets than all iStudio stores can make. Another one is about the Beetle as I mentioned. I read ‘The Long Tail’ and learned that if we talk about things no one wanted to do, it means it’s hard to find a good content out there too. And it will be always popular because you can watch and enjoy it in any time.

Latest one is about the zero kilometer. It is about my story of running equipment and it becomes more popular. I put the camera with the equipment and put it on the show for weeks. And we got very good response from this.

Techno Society: How would you plan for Changkui.com in the future?

Mr. Passakorn - Changkui.com: I plan to make it as on-demand TV show where you can choose to watch it in your ways. We focus on Internet TV and that is our goal. Some said I’m the kind of Podcast, guru but I do prefer the term ‘Internet TV’ guru instead.

Actually there is a lot more stories about Mr. Passakorn Hongyok, and Changkui.com. But sadly I have no more page .. so just wanna say goodbye and see you in our next issue.

Facebook and Goldman Sachs called for a new flexible server design Facebook, Goldman Sachs, NTT Data, and other members of Open Compute Project (OCP) urged and pushed for a new flexible

server design.Buying servers today has limitations in complete integrated systems or system convergence. Though the ease of deployment

can be gained but disaggregated approach to allow processors, motherboards, and networking can be upgraded independently will save on costs.

OCP is now starting a new project to drive this approach in various ways such as using silicon photonics for linking components at both the motherboard and the rack layer, and creating a new common slot architecture that should enable fully vendor-neutral motherboards to remain in use through multiple processor generation.
