Communication Skills Its really important in the filming process as a leader to have an accurate understanding of your role and the roles of your team. To be albe to sufficantly communicate will increase the standard and qwality,effectivness of your film. To be respectful and motivating towards your team to boos their confidence and hence better performacne but at the same time making it fun for everyone balenced with dissapline and deadication. The role I portrayed in Kieran’s Short film Aoibhean and the Bear was production Stills and Assistant. Before the main short film projects we had completed a few sub-project tasks. Some of which I directed. The projects I directed was a film promo based on my Screenplay (Three Irish lands & Some Dead Fella) required by mark and a mini Documentary required by Muireann De-Bara. Bellow is a structure annalysis I completed for the mini documentary Mirian’s Story:

(Mirians Story) - (Mini Documentary) Introduction: For a class assessment we were required to

create a mini five minute documentary. I directed one of the mini docs titled Mirians’s story about fellow classmate Mirian Gonzalez a Spanish student who came over to Ireland to seek education in TV/Film and prioritized editing as a hopeful future job. A narrative voice over observational piece telling the story of her adaption in Ireland and Archieve use of pictures. The final pieace is now available on the LCFE Focus channel on

Daily Performacne I assigned roles to each individual in the task as follows:

Sean Macintyre assisted me with the camera shots, shooting Mirian in an observational manor during a single day of college. Sean was very good at being instructed in the process and got me some great shots that I explained. However some of the shots were manipulated such as the introduction of Mirian entering the college. After the Day of shooting we gave the footage to Kirian to edit the entire mini doc in the structure I printed for him using Celtx. Bellow is evidance of the Shot List/Descriptor I provided for Kiren Burke

Before the shooting began Stephan Barret interviewed Mirian in the I Mix Radio booth shooting and recording the narrative with a zoom mic for the voice over. We listed a set of questions for Mirian to answer.

During the editing process we synced the sound narrative to fit the full length of the mini doc removing the audio pieces of Stephans dialog to create a more effective narrative voice over and less artificial story. Shaun Wrenn assisted with the production of the mini doc in a sufficient professional manner.

learning It was a very interesting experience directing a mini doc. I learned so much from leading a team and understanding concepts and themes of documentary. Being collaborative and flexible towards difficult situations. I learned to be more organized and structured with my vision towards my team defining objectives to carry out the work in a professional and structured format.

Challenges Despite how happy I was with the final result there were a few issues that occurred

during the filming process. A silly downfall of communication that was my fault was

the lack of a shot list, which created confusion with the editor Kieran Burke, and

cameraman Sean Macintyre. Because of the lack of time to provide the documentary

and a previous absent subject that we originally had organized, due to personal

reasons couldn’t arrive. Mirian obliged to take part in the project. I visualized and

explained to Sean each shot in the presents of him, which he undertook very

sufficiently.

The same goes for Kiren during the editing process which resulted in me typing up a

structured shot list script for him to put the pieces together and diminish any shots

that were unnecessary our deemed unusable.

Communication in the Short Film/Roles & Understanding

Introduction

Kieran Burke was shortlisted with his short film title Aoibhinn and the Bear eventually getting chosen as one of two candidates for the shot films project to bring a team together and to prepare location and actors and chosen roles for the film. My role in the film was production stills. My job was to organise and take shots using my Nikon camera of the process of the film. The film was shot at three locations using a cannon camera. This can act as insurance for the film and valid proof of its existence .

Daily performance

Day 1 started shooting film at The hook and Ladder Hotel

Date of Shooting – (29th Feb 2016)

Time of Shooting: (15:00)

I began by arriving on set on day one at the Hook and Ladder Hotel. We shot the first scene at the bottom of the hotel that had been booked for the film. I started by helping the team organise and carry the equipment inside. Before shooting I assisted Kieran with practice shots by sitting next to Kevin so Kieran and max could get a simulation what the shot would look like. Kieran was testing the lights on and off. And was trying to define what he wanted to suit the scene. I resumed taking production stills as the filming progressed with each day helping out whenever I could. Kieran directed his team well and the actress ester to perform in the manor he was looking for. For the next few days the team filmed at the apartment set that had been booked for filming. Before the actress ester arrived we set up the equipment on set and we had lunch before we began filming. Mirian assistant editor organized all the shots in full during the filming process for Sara to work with a sufficient and organized edit suit to complete the film. Chris and Robert set up the red headlights and got input from Kevin Liddy during preparation. Megan had listed a continuity sheet for any mistakes that might have occurred on set for Kieran. Sean Macintyre operated the sound and Phillip Coffee operated the boom pool to get the required sound for the film. I resumed talking production stills for the day of shooting. I organized them in preference order from day one stills to final day stills.

Megan organized all the continuity sheets for the film. She was marking off mistakes in script and light continuity. She was very professional and accurate with her job.

Chris set up the red head lights for the shoot helping the director create a bright visual perspective in the atmosphere for the scene.

Mirian - Assistant Editor

Mirian was in charge of organizing all the files for the footage taken on the day and laying them out in a professional manner for the main editor to begin the edit. Also responsible for syncing sound with clips.

Conclusion/Learning It was an amazing experience to be on set working with dedicated and professional students. I have learned allot during the process of filming such as the rolls each person works and how they work. I learned about The type of camera, shots,lighting,sound and editing all which enhanced my individual media skills I believe to a whole new level.

To conclude everyone worked sufficiently well even during times of difficulties and set backs on set and other situations that caused problems were eventually met and dealt with. Overall I enjoyed my role as production Stills and hope to take on my own side projects in the near future.

To work as a team is a learning experience. There is a balance between communication, punctuality and discipline with the role you carry out. I learned a great deal of techniques when making a film and important things to consider when carrying out a project. Here are some of the following:

Communication – To be collaborative with your team and able yourself to ask

questions. To respect and take on board ideas and to be disciplined and aware of

what the director has to say. What is required? To be grounded and flexible in difficult

situations.

Health and safety–. Health and safety is the most important thing when working on

set. A valid risk assessment must be typed up to ensure the safety of our team and

insurance in case of any unfortunate accidents. Megan did a good job ensuring that

the apartment was a safe environment to work with.

Production Stills - Learning to display attractive stills as insurance for your film and

a nice memo for your team.

Preparation – To be organized and ready for the next shoot before the director says

we are going for a take.

Challenges

− During the filming process at the apartment there was a communication error with the

actress ester resulting in her arriving late on set. Kieran had set the deadline for three

and she arrived at four.

− During the first day of shooting. The panic scene in the bathroom didn’t get a reaction

kiran wanted because there was too many of the team near the scene. Kiran resolved this

issue by asking people who are not required for the scene to be dismissed to the outside

room for that particular scene.

− During the final day on set there was an issue that was out of our control. There was a

beautiful sun set that Kieran then decided to get on frame as fast as possible to get the

beautiful atmosphere. Ester was unaware of this and arrived a few minutes late and the

sun had nearly set. Kieran was not completely satisfied with the acting for the last scene

but overall was very happy with the film.

Evidence of communication The team used a series of different methouds of communication. One use was social media platforms such as facebook to set up a group page and inform everyone of the times and days of shooting.
