Texas Alpha Chapter

Fall 2017 to Spring 2018

Executive Summary

The Tau Beta Pi Texas Alpha Chapter at the University of Texas at Austin initiated 40 Tau Beta Pi candidates into our chapter during the 2017-2018 academic year. These members showed integrity and excellence in engineering through the completion of fifteen candidate requirements in tandem with maintenance of outstanding scholastic and extracurricular achievements. Some of those requirements include attending participating in five chapter social events, completing six hours of community service with the chapter, contributing three hours to internal chapter activities like fundraising, and attending at least one fireside hosted by a distinguished faculty member in the Cockrell School of Engineering. This chapter report contains a summary of all 122 events sponsored by our chapter that our candidates participated in.

Our diligent, semester long initiation process is designed to insure that our candidates are honorable engineers and not just high-GPA students. The social events provide opportunities for our candidates to develop interdepartmental connections with other high-achieving Cockrell School of Engineering students in the Texas Alpha chapter. Firesides allowed those candidates to connect with, glean valuable insights from and obtain career advice from professors outside a traditional academic setting.

Furthermore, our most committed, stressed, and important requirement is the fulfillment of at least nine hours of community service. Although six hours does not seem like a lot, it can become a challenge as our candidates learn to balance TBP activities and their engineering course load during the initiation process. The goal of the community service hours is to motivate our candidates to help the community we all live in, whether it is helping to feed and interact with homeless people, cleaning up our local parks, or tutoring middle schoolers in STEM subjects. In addition, all candidates are broken into teams to set up their own community service projects. Through these teams, the candidates develop personal relationships with engineering students from diverse backgrounds while working together to improve the greater Austin area community. As evidenced from the events put together during both the fall and spring semester, our chapter can already see improvements in our service requirement. In total, Texas Alpha candidates were supposed to complete 512 hours of community service hours, instead they put in more than 650 hours towards the improvement of the Austin community, a good sign that some of our candidates will continue to volunteer.

A huge target for the Texas Alpha chapter is education through the K-12 initiative. Every year, Texas Alpha gets involved with Explore UT, a day where K-12 students arrive from across the state to explore the UT Austin campus, and Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day, where K-12 girls come to the Cockrell School of Engineering to participate in engineering-related games and activities to develop their interest in pursuing STEM subjects in college. During these events, Texas Alpha has built a trebuchet, a machine used in medieval times, to let the kids launch water balloons and learn about projectile physics. We get to teach history by explaining the medieval uses of the trebuchet, physics by showing how a lever and a counterweight can fling an object in the air, and how much fun it can be to learn about both!

Texas Alpha also likes to keep traditions, just like the University of Texas at Austin does. This year we continued to host the Texas Alpha Alumni Tailgate. The Alumni Tailgate, which occurred this year during the Texas vs. San Jose State football game, is not just an opportunity to have a fun time while watching the game, but also to bring Texas Alpha alumni together. By playing some field games

like volleyball and cornhole, and eating great barbeque, everyone gets to interact with one another, and share stories and advice.

As we move into the chapter’s second century of existence, Texas Alpha strives to promote integrity and excellence in engineering by continuing to have a strict and rigorous initiation process. At the same time, we also try to increase active involvement by giving incentives to continue to participate in TBP events even after initiation. This year, we recognized several active Texas Alpha members who went above and beyond to contribute to the chapter’s social and service activities throughout both semesters. As we move into the chapter’s 2nd century, our officer team and active members will continue to provide an inclusive environment for our membership to develop connections, build their professional experience and improve the local community through community service.

Average number of hours per person Organizing: 1 Participating: 1 DESCRIPTION: I. General Description: This was the second general meeting of the semester. This general meeting was “dress-up day”, where each team dressed up according to the team theme (Disney) and their respective teams (Mulan, Hercules, Toy Story, Pirates of the Caribbean, Lion King, and Monster’s Inc.). After serving food, we made our general announcements of upcoming events/deadlines. Next was team presentations, where each team came up to the front, each member introduced themselves, and the team announced their team service project. Afterwards, we finished our general TBP announcements portion with the upcoming events. The last 15 minutes were dedicated to a panel of 3 TBP alumni, from the Central Texas Alumni Chapter, who are all now in industry and came to share their post-college wisdom. II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: The purpose of the General Meetings is to keep active members and candidates informed and foster relationships between the members. These meetings also serve to introduce the attendees to a career or education path and cultivate a high standard of professional interest. III. I. General Description: Members dined at Uncle Julio’s in downtown Austin to celebrate the end of the candidacy and semester. Queso, a Fajita bar, and chocolate pinatas were served. A slideshow presentation was presented by the departing officer team, which included 1) Photos taken throughout the semester, 2) best of awards, 3) superlatives, and 4) senior sendoffs.

II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: Brought together the TBP community to celebrate and end to a great semester. This builds comradery and encourages future networking with other Tau Beta Pi members. Also, this recognizes and encourages a high level of commitment to TBP and shows we value our members.

III. Organization & Administration: The events was organized by the Vice President Operations Desi Friesenhahn, with assistance from the President Ethan Freeburg and Social Coordinator Mick Yoon. Historian Catherine Xu helped with set-up, slideshow and took pictures. IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Attendees did not have to bring anything. Food and Space Reservation: $1824

By participating in some hands-on volunteering, electees can develop the virtue of being selfless. It also emphasizes the importance Tau Beta Pi places on community service and selfless attitude. III. Organization & Administration: This event was planned in collaboration with Healing with Horses Ranch (a charity organization) IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: One of the participants volunteered to drive to the ranch and back. V. Special Problems: Volunteers ran out of time after pulling down the fences and were unable to put up the new wooden fences. This was because there were few cutting tools compared to the number of volunteers. Thus, taking down the barbed wires became an overly time-consuming task. VI. Over-all Evaluation/Results: Although there was not enough time to put up new fences, the management of the ranch were extremely grateful. The volunteers also enjoyed the whole experience as it was hands-on and they were able to carry out some engineering manoeuvres. The event ended right on time and participants were dropped off as convenient locations. Candidates: Oliver Zhang, Elliot West, Bryson Hill and Heeyong Huh. Actives: Mustapha Jolaade.

DESCRIPTION:

I. General Description:

This was a fireside chat that is unlike any other—the members of TBP got to meet the architect who designed Austin-

Bergstrom International Airport, Austin Convention Center, and shaped downtown Austin. Professor Larry Speck calls

himself an "architecture junkie," and he is an architect's architect. He grew up in a small town in Texas, received

Bachelor's and Master's degree from MIT, and served as a dean of the School of Architecture at UT. Now, he has a

nationally known practice as a professor and as the principal of Austin-based architecture and engineering firm. The

attendees learned more about his life, about his work that ranges from designing FBI Regional Headquarter to urban

planning. He graciously invited us to his penthouse (that he designed) in downtown Austin that accommodated 50 people.

II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: Fireside chat fosters a very open, honest, and inspiring environment. The members are free to ask away any questions they have for a professor, and the professor in return provides insightful advices. The interactions we usually experience in these fireside chats are completely different from the typical professor-student interactions in classrooms. III. Organization & Administration: Not organized in conjunction with another group. IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Food was provided by Dr. Moore for those in attendance. V. Special Problems: None. VI. Over-all Evaluation/Results: The event went very smoothly and overall the attendees had a very insightful time learning about Dr. Moore. He was very enthusiastic and also had a great time interacting with TBP members. Candidates: Heny Patel, Jorge Barrera, and Kennedy Stirling. Actives: Tori Gahagan (officer), Josh Wiggers (officer), and James Albritton.

Project name: Burger Burn #1 Date(s) of Project: 10/6/2017 Project area: University/College Number of persons who participated in this project Members: 6/114 Electees: 25/81 (List of names is included below.) Average number of hours per person Organizing: 5 Participating: 1 DESCRIPTION: I. General Description: We ran our traditional fundraising event: The Burger Burn. During this event, we set up a grill, a tent, and several tables in front of our engineering buildings. We then cooked beef burgers, veggie burgers, and hot dogs and sold these items, along with chips and drinks, to students and faculty that passed by during lunch hours.

II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: This event has been our main source of fundraising for the Texas Alpha chapter. We put the profits from our Burger Burns towards our Scholarship Endowment Fund and fund our other chapter events including socials, service events, and professional development events. III. Organization & Administration: This event was organized in conjunction with the Fire Safety, who approved our use of a propane grill to cook our food. The event was also organized in conjunction with Student Activities, who allowed us to reserve the space necessary to hold the event, and Environmental Health and Safety, who made sure that we were following the necessary codes and restrictions.

IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: All food and non-food items were purchased from Sam’s Club. We required all officers to help for at least an hour for each Burger Burn, and we encouraged candidates and actives to help as well in an effort to fulfill point requirements for the semester. V. Special Problems: In the second hour of the burger burn, personnel from Environmental Health and Safety shut down our operation citing our lack of a “hand-washing station” as dictated by new protocols. An impromptu hand-washing station was thrown together in order to salvage the operation.

VI. Over-all Evaluation/Results: This was the first of five Burger Burns planned for the semester. Our net profits were about $150, which is a little low when we look at our history for the previous year where most burger burns made profits in the $200-$300 range. However, the one hour of in-operation due to EHS shutdown must be taken into account. The use of the Square card reader has been very helpful because it allowed us to serve food to people who only had credit or debit card as a method of payment. Many customers made purchases through Venmo as it is very convenient for college student to purchase food with money through their mobile devices.

All burgers and hotdogs were served with a tomatoes, lettuce, onions, ketchup, mustard, pickles, and/or relish. Both actives and officers participated in grilling, serving, set-up, and clean-up. II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: The Burger Burn is our most used and characteristic fundraising event. The goal was to raise money for our chapter. We put the profits from our Burger Burns towards our Scholarship Endowment Fund and other chapter events including socials, service events, and professional development events. III. Organization & Administration: The event was organized under the approval of the University services EHS and student activities, as well as under Roosevelt Easley, a fire safety specialist. 3 tables and a tent were borrowed from ASME. IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Food and equipment (burners, plates, trays, napkins, seasoning, etc.) for the burger burn was bought at Sam’s Club. Ice and a water container were bought at HEB. No one was required to volunteer, but having we encouraged members to come and help. Officers were required to help out during time slots void of volunteers and time slots the fundraising coordinator could not make. V. Special Problems: Had Excess of food; ended up throwing approximately half of the tomatoes away, ~13 beef patties, and some onions. 3 veggie patties, several tomatoes, and a few beef patties were donated. The rest of the remaining stock was stored in a freezer for future use. VI. Over-all Evaluation/Results: This was the first Burger Burn planned for the semester. Overall, the event went as expected, as all operations were conducted according to our normal practices. Our profits have not been calculated yet, as our system of accounting has yet to be finalized. The revenues were above average for our first Burger Burn of the semester, but much of the long-term supplies were in need of restocking for this event. Nevertheless, by all common accounting practices, a profit was generated. Upon review, it is suspected that many aspects could be tweaked for better results. Unlike traditional bake sales, the goods were all baked together under supervision of an officer. The goods were sold for profit as opposed to flat revenue, as most bake sales are. Furthermore, goods were baked mostly from scratch. II. Purpose & Relationship to Objectives of TBP: The goal of the event is to raise some money for TBP as a proof of concept. This sale was conducted mainly to assess the viability of a new fundraising event. III. Organization & Administration: The event was organized under the approval of student activities. A table was borrowed from ASME. IV. Cost & Personnel Requirements: Baked goods were purchased from H-E-B. The total cost of the ingredients totaled about $40. V. Special Problems: Bees are attracted by baked goods. Selling times not optimized. VI. Over-all Evaluation/Results: The event was mildly successful. The cheesecake bars and brownies sold out, but the cheesecake did not sell well. Although significant revenue was generated, resulting in approximately 80% profit, it was predicted that upsizing would result in lower yield. Given the work needed to run the event, it was decided that standalone bake sales would not be continued this semester.
