Evidence 2, the Teachers As Scholars (TAS) Project, focuses on initial teaching licensure candidates abilities todisplay the level of scholarship necessary to conduct rigorous in-depth research into one aspect of one aspect of the content thatthey will be responsible for teaching. Candidates who demonstrate the ability to acquire and to synthesize knowledge regardingone specific facet of one particular content area will be assumed to be capable of applying these same strategies to other areasof teaching and learning. In completing this evidence, candidates will identify content knowledge from the Common Core or theNC Essential Standards that is foundational to a particular area of instruction, ask clarifying questions to narrow the focus of thisspecific content, gather resources to enhance their understanding of this content, complete detailed research about this content, and create an interactive multi-media web page that showcases their expertise regarding this specific content. Teacher

candidates must be able to design and deliver effective instruction based upon the academic standards as well as uponemerging 21st century content and ICT literacy (Partnership For 21 st Century Skills, 2004); thus, in order to develop effectiveinstruction, candidates must possess a depth of background knowledge about the content-area concepts to be presented andunderstand how to present it in authentic ways to 21st century students. The TAS Project presumes that candidates are or canbecome experts in any aspect of the content they might be required to teach and are able to display their understandings usingrelevant technologies.

The TAS Project will be a graded assignment for several classes and, in its final format, will serve as electronicevidence 2 (EE2) in the initial teaching license portfolio. Candidates will examine the Common Core standards or the NCEssential Standards and identify a single piece of content appropriate for the grade level(s) and discipline they wish to teach. Byclosely examining one standard, candidates will narrow the focus of their inquiry to determine a very specific topic to study indepth and to create an essential/ guiding research question for it. They will then locate/review a variety of scholarly resourcesand references in order to research this topic. The goal is to develop depth of background expertise about this particular content, separate from the teaching pedagogy required for its subsequent presentation to learners. Specifically, candidates must satisfythe following requirements to complete the TAS Project:

1.Select a specific research topic based upon the Common Core standards or the NC Essential Standards. The research topicmust be focused enough to allow for sustained investigation of a precise topic.

2.Compose a guiding/ essential research question. Be sure that this question is precise enough to lend itself to deep andrigorous research. To ensure this, your question must be approved by the instructor prior to the start of research.

3.Locate, read, and evaluate information from current professional and content literature pertinent to the selected topic, including at least 5 print (books or full-length journal articles) and 5 scholarly online references (be prepared to verify thelegitimacy of online sources). Be sure to ask a librarian for help in conducting academic research, and be sure todocument your notes and sources for ease of citation later.

4.It may prove helpful to save images, video links, tables, etc. for use later in your final web site. Use good file managementto name and save these so that you can find and access them later.

5.Using these resources, detail facts and synthesize concepts specific to the selected topic and create a rigorous researchpresentation. Many candidates find it helpful to compose the initial draft as a traditional research paper prior to transferringit to the multi-media web format. Your final research project must present topically-organized content information, display

depth of knowledge, synthesize ideas, cite/reference the literature reviewed, and evidence academic rigor in a 21st centuryformat. The web site will be indicative of an interactive research project that provides both vertical and lateral connectionsbetween sub-components of the research topic. In order to address content with appropriate depth and rigor, the websitemust include at least 3-5 individual web pages (equivalent to a 10-12 page paper of typical text) hyperlinked together. It isassumed that a website displays variety of multi-media content, but all required elements must be present (see number 4below).

6.Integrate content knowledge with demonstrations of ICT literacy by including the following in the research presentation: at least one supplemental audio-visual file(recorded narration, embedded video or mp3 player, music

integration/soundtrack, etc) at least three images/graphics (photographs, diagrams, drawings, maps, etc.) at least one table, graph, or chart created specifically for the research presentation to display or to enhance the

content (NOT a graph saved online and inserted as a picture file) at least three hyperlinks (between a table of contents/index and somewhere in the presentation, between two

locations within the body of the presentation, to a slide not in sequence, or to external content such as an onlinebook/journal, another research paper, a scholarly website, a professional or government organization, a video, apodcast, another presentation, etc.)

    7. Utilize APA (2009 edition) format for in-text citations.8. Create a reference listing to be attached at the end of the research presentation. All resources cited must be

included in correct APA (2009 edition) format. The TAS Project addresses standard 3b.1, Demonstrates an appropriate level of content knowledge in the teaching

specialty, in terms both ofdepth and rigor. Depth of the TAS Project is indicated by the narrow scholarly focus of the researchproject derived by careful examination, analysis, and evaluation of the goals and objectives contained with the NCSOS forelementary social studies, science, or health. The TAS Project evidences rigorin its underlying expectations that candidates willlocate and compile knowledge from current scholarly resources and reference material then synthesize this knowledge to createoriginal works that display both deep foundational understanding of content as well as 21st century presentation skills of it.
