Target Audience

Using the secondary data collected by UK Film Council, I could find the target audience analysis for my film genre and information namely:

o types of films that the general public typically enjoy watchingo types of film that the general public consider their favouriteso types of UK film that the general public would like to see more of in the future

I chose a hybrid genre – thriller/fantasy, I highlighted both genres on the data above. Fantasy having 37% of the general public and thriller having 53%, this shows that my audience is generally mainstream, because they both have larger percentages.

Here, I used the information to find my secondary and primary audience. There was a complication in compiling the data of both genres having two completely different target audiences, so the most common was chosen.

My primary target audience is Males over 35, and C2 social class.

My secondary target audience are Females under 35 and C1 social class.

This data shows that Thrillers are the second favourite genre for the general public having 26% of ratings, although Fantasy is only 9%, making it seem as if it is a more of a niche audience. So, in order to have a successful film opening (can be a public favourite), I should include more thriller conventions than fantasy. For example: I should have more scenes including suspense and only have a few scenes where magic is created by special effects.

Also showing Thriller is the second most preferred genre is Thriller, it shows 26% of GB public consider it as their favourite, while only 7% consider Fantasy as their favourite. Here, I found out the demographics of my target audience.

Primary: Females over 35 in the C2 social class

Secondary: Males over 35 in the C1 social class

This narrows things down and tells me my target audience is people over 35.
