It’s been a long time coming. When I was
ordained 17 years ago, I confidently decided that I
would only officiate at the weddings for two Jews.
I reasoned that my ceremonies were Jewish and
that the minimum standard would be Jewish
identity, as defined by the Reform movement. I
long felt that it was easy to explain and understand.
It has worked for me for a number of years.
As time has gone by though, I have found
myself feeling sad at the all the weddings I cannot
officiate. I am appreciative that my Temple Beth
David community has been respectful of my
position however my remorse has only been
increasing. I have asked myself what have I, my
synagogue, or the Jewish community gained by my
stance? My answer to myself has been
disappointing. I confess that having a stance of
only officiating for two Jews has not brought
together even one Jewish couple nor has it
encouraged Jewish home life. Moreover, I see
active members of our synagogue where despite
one parent not being Jewish, they are raising their
children as strongly identifying Jews.
For the sake of fostering Judaism, I have
undertaken a period of reflection. Over the past
year, I have interviewed a number of rabbis that I
respect. I even spent time with a conservative
colleague in hopes of being dissuaded of changing
my position. Surprisingly, he was understanding
and even supportive. I have found myself
admiring those rabbis who do interfaith weddings
when there is a commitment to Judaism and the
raising of Jewish children.
And so after this year, I am ready to say that I
have changed my mind. For the sake of
encouraging Judaism and helping couples embrace
Jewish rites and rituals, I have come to the
following decision.
I will do interfaith weddings for our
congregants under these conditions: (provided it is
a healthy relationship with counseling sessions with
me.)
1. Judaism will be the dominant religion of the
household.
2. The couple is willing to take the
Introduction to Judaism course or
something similar.
3. There is a commitment to raising their
children solely as Jews.
4. The wedding will be a Jewish one.
There will be times, when the couple isn’t ready to
make this commitment to Jewish life. I will be
respectful of these couples and offer counseling
and referrals to clergy who can meet their needs.
My new stance, though, will enable me to
participate in more weddings of our congregation.
These are ones that I believe will help strengthen
Judaism and the future of our people.
Blessed are You, Adonai, who created sashon
v’simcha (joy and happiness).
.
I’ve changed my mind on officiation of
interfaith weddings

As I begin my second term as Temple
President, I am happy to report that Temple
Beth David remains vibrant and financially
stable. Our dedicated Board spends countless
hours behind the scenes working to maintain
and improve our synagogue and its
programming. To that end, I welcome our
newest Board members – Adam Bernstein, Neil
Kornswiet and Eileen Tobey. Unlike many
other synagogues, we have a great synergy
between the Board and Clergy. I cannot
emphasize enough how important this
relationship is to good functioning. It allows us
to place all our energies towards addressing
actions that strengthen our congregation, that
make Temple Beth David a place of greater
meaning and greater value.
The new Board has already held the first Board
meeting of the year. The kitchen remodeling is
well underway. Upgrading of our IT is also in
the works along with a number of smaller
projects. Membership renewal is in progress
and it is our hope that once the IT upgrade is
completed, we will be able to offer renewals
online - making the process much easier.
The Board remains committed to the goals of
increasing membership and youth engagement.
We continue to welcome a steady stream of
new congregants into our family and see
growth in our Chavurahs. We have made good
progress in youth programming as well. In
addition to having a youth choir, we see many
young members joining the adult choir. We
have again hired a rabbinical intern to lead the
9th grade and have developed an active youth
group. We have youth participating in musical
services and recently had a special Disney
service to make Shabbat more engaging for
your youngsters.
Your support is vital if we are to continue
nurturing the future of our Jewish community.
If you have not already submitted your
membership renewal, I strongly encourage you
do to so as soon as possible. If you have the
means, consider joining the Circle of Honor.
Together we can keep Temple Beth David a
meaningful part of the Jewish community for
generations to come.

SISTERHOOD MATTERS!
By Ruth Kramer, Sisterhood President
The kitchen renovation is underway at last and soon
the entire Temple family will be able to enjoy the new setting
to its fullest. The ribbon cutting is set for Friday, August 15
and you won’t want to miss that. Sisterhood has donated
$25,000 to the Kitchen Renovation Fund and in all we have
raised over $118,000, slightly short of what is needed to
complete the project in its entirety. To those who have
donated we are so grateful for your generosity and if you
haven’t participated, now would be a good time to send in
your check to the Temple office designating your contribution
to the Kitchen Renovation Fund.
Huge kudos go to Eileen Tobey, Liz Kleinman and
Mulu Harrison for clearing out the cabinets in the old kitchen,
sorting through the items, and storing what we will need to
provide for the needs of the congregation. They have spent
hours and lots of energy performing this great mitzvah.
On Sunday, June 8, we enjoyed a lovely luncheon
and celebration of Sisterhood Donors. Each Donor is equal to
$100 and is earned throughout the year by services from our
members as well as cash donations, purchases from the
Judaica Shop and serving on the Sisterhood Board and
committee activities. This year, 117 ladies attended and were
served a delicious lunch, and awarded door prizes and raffle
items. Rabbi Myers conducted the installation service for our
board and we are on our way into the new Sisterhood year.
Thanks to all who helped plan and organize this special event:
Mickey Lewin, Sue Leboff, Anne Farber, Robin Baroway,
Laura Berman, Renée Dorfman, Jackie Hewitt, Judy Karmon,
Hannah Levine, Elaine Netzer, Muriel Marks, Phyllis
Postman, Marcela Alban, Debbie Crowley, and Karin
Perumean.
Our “Woman of Merit” award was given to Sue
LeBoff for all of her service to Sisterhood. She co-chairs the
Donor Chair on our Board and is well-deserving of this award
for the many dedicated hours she spends keeping track of
records and planning the Donor Luncheon.
Our organization is growing and we hope to continue
on that trend. In the coming year, our membership dues will
remain at $36 per person and we already have several
interesting and fun events planned for the coming year.
September 21 will be our annual membership event, so you
will want to mark your calendars. The Sisterhood
Membership form is included in your Temple Member
package.
Our next fundraiser will be a bus trip to Pechanga on
Tuesday, July 29. Please watch for the sign up page in the
Shavua Tov and the Megillah to reserve your seat on the bus.
Our Mazelgram program continues throughout the
summer – forms are found in the Megillah and Shavua Tov as
well as on the table in the Social Hall. Send your completed
list and check to Renée Dorfman as listed on the form.
Summer is a good time to think about goals and
objectives for Sisterhood. All of our members are welcome at
any of our meetings and functions. We value your
participation and dedication. Please watch for announcements
in the Shavua Tov and the Megillah for our events and plans.
Wishing you good health and lots of happiness!

Construction has begun in our new Kitchen!
To date, many Temple families have generously donated towards the renovation making it possible for us to have a wonderful modern facility.
A huge thanks to all! We are still a little short of being able to complete the project in its entirety. So if you have not given, please send your donation now.
Your check is tax deductible made out to TBD Kitchen Renovation. In this way you will know that you are part of this wonderful project for the future of our entire Temple family.

Temple Member SPOTLIGHT:
Max & Florence Sudakow
~ written by Donna Litvak
Even before they met, Max and Florence had a lot of things in common. Both were born in New York. Florence grew up in Long Island. Max was born in Brooklyn, but raised in Miami, Florida and went to college at the University of Miami. Florence also attended college in Florida, although wound up at the University of Florida.
While at their respective institutions of higher learning, both were active members in sororities and fraternities. Their social responsibilities in no way impeded their academic ambitions. Florence had aspired to become an attorney. Discouraged by the high cost of law school tuition, she decided to pursue an alternative career path in special education earning Masters Degrees and related credentials. Meanwhile, Max received an engineering degree. After working in the aerospace industry, Max came out to California and earned an MBA, which led to him managing several businesses: aerospace, traffic light manufacturer, and more. Then he became a consultant and has been doing so ever since.
Their careers have brought them both acclaim and positions on several boards. Among them, Florence became a Resource Specialist in Orange County and was President of the Orange County branch of the California Association of Resource Specialists (CARS). Max served as member and President of the Oceanview School Board.
Speaking of success, the story of how Florence and Max were brought together many years ago also counts as a success story. Like many tales within the Jewish community, a mother was involved. Specifically, while Max was home for the holidays, his mother gave him a list with three names on it. He arranged the list alphabetically and called up the girl at the top of the list – Florence. He never called any other girl on the list. The two went out for two weeks and three days. Then they spent four months writing letters to each other while Max was in Spain. When he was transferred to Scotland, Florence went with him. They got married in a civil service and later had a Jewish ceremony. So Max and Florence have been blessed with two anniversaries, two kids and two grandchildren, and this year will celebrate their 48 year wedding anniversary.
If all of the above wasn’t enough to keep these two busy, they devote time to their hobbies as well. Florence likes to bake cookies and race walk. Congregants also marvel at her speaking prowess! Max likes to go to the gym. Both of them like to read.
They are also very active members of Temple Beth David – currently both serve on the Temple Board. Max has been on Temple Beth David’s board for thirty-some years and has held nearly every position on it –including President. He now also serves on the Brotherhood’s board. Likewise, Florence has held nearly every position in the Sisterhood’s board –including President and has been bestowed the Temple’s “Woman of Merit” award. She also sings in the
Temple choir and has served as the choir’s President for the past five years. They were very honored to be recognized last year by the temple for all the hard work they have done.
Members since 1973, Florence likes how the congregation is a very eclectic and welcoming group. Max especially appreciates the community aspect of it. Neither of them had a devoutly Jewish upbringing. (Florence’s father was Italian Catholic. Max’s family was more culturally than religiously Jewish.) Thus, Temple Beth David became the first congregation Florence became a part of. It was also where they each had their adult B’nei Mitvah. Max’s and Florence’s devotion to Temple Beth David has been passed on to their children. For the past twenty-five years –since he was a child –their son James has always played the Kol Nidre service. Their daughter is always a dedicated vendor at Temple holiday boutiques with her beautiful handmade table runners and placemats.
With all these accomplishments, you may think Max and Florence would consider slowing down. Yet as they say, “We just keep going!” Where this attitude will take them, they do not know. Florence speculates it will lead them to Australia, an African safari, and cooking classes!
The dedicated duo will surely continue to create many more stories at Temple Beth David…and for all they’ve done and will continue to do, we are forever grateful!

The Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism,
Israel's Reform Judaism, celebrated its
golden anniversary at its biennial convention last
month. The movement is growing steadily.
Currently, they have 47 synagogues and
communities including 4 that are Russian
speaking. The convention was attended by 1200
rabbis and lay leaders who participated in 40
sessions including workshops, prayer and study
sessions.
Israel's Finance Minister, MK Yair Lapid, leader
of Yesh Atid, the new political party whose
platform was based on reducing the special
treatment of the ultra-Orthodox was a keynote
speaker. He pointed out that "a year after Yesh
Atid's election, we are more committed than ever
to the cause of equality among all streams of
Judaism inside of Israel, as manifested in the
issues of conversion, civil marriage and official
government recognition…It is incomprehensible
that Israel remains the only Western country
where Jewish people are not truly free." He
added that "most Israelis are already members of
Reform, but they just don't know it."
Justice Minister, MK Tzipi Livni, representing
the governing coalition, said in her address that
"Israel has not yet decided what it means to be
both a Jewish and democratic state. As our
country has become increasingly threatened from
without, it has become more insular. As a result,
Israel is becoming more nationalistic politically
and more Orthodox religiously. These
developments are weakening the ties between
Israel and world Jewry."
Leader of the Opposition Labor Party MK
Yitzchak Herzog of the Labor Party stated that he
is "fully committed to religious pluralism in Israel
and will do anything to promote it. The solution
to the 'price tag' phenomenon is right here, in this
room: dialogue with and recognition of those who
are different than us."
Even MK Hanegbi of Likud, the coalition leading
right wing party, emphasized that he is "a full
partner with the values of the Reform Movement.
We must continue to struggle for freedom of
conscience. You, the Reform Movement, are a
rock, standing firm against the racism and
religious fanaticism that pervades Israel."
From the presence and comments of the Members
of the Knesset it is clear that IMPJ is becoming a
force in Israeli society and a clear alternative to
the Orthodox monopoly on Judaism in Israel. Its
future also seems bright because IMPJ operates
many nursery schools that expose both the
children and their parents to Reform Judaism.
On another topic, the peace process did not make
any announced progress by its target date and
both sides were quick to blame the other for the
failure. The intransigence on both sides shows no
signs of abating. The Palestinians seem bent on
gaining recognition as a nation by the UN and
Israel continues to build on the occupied territory
and in East Jerusalem. There seems nothing
currently on the horizon that could restart the
serious peace talks.
