Christmas decorations are all over the shops and in the malls, symbolising that the big day is around the corner. This is the time of the year that everyone has been waiting for, a time to share and receive gifts and to spend time with their families.People are advised to spend wisely and save money for the New Year. SABRIC is giving tips on ATM and bank card fraud. They are warning people to be vigilant when using ATMs and not to allow anyone to assist them. Make sure that when you punch your pin number that no one else sees it. There are two common methods used by the fraudsters: the skimming device and surfing system, which are both explained in detail on the next article in the page. The criminals target the festive season because they are aware that people are getting bonuses and receiving their investments of the year.As we are in the midst of the 16 days of activism against violence against women and child abuse, we advise people to break the silence by reporting any form of abuse. Those who are having Christmas and farewell parties and want to get coverage in our paper should contact our tame TIMES Kathorus team on the contact details listed below. See you in the next edition with more festive season news and safety tips.

There are numerous incidents of card and ATM fraud reported every day, especially towards the festive season. These cases have raised alarm with Thokoza Progressive Youth (TPY) and South African Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC), leading them to host a card and ATM fraud awareness campaign at Thokoza youth centre recently.Daya Moodley, project manager of SABRIC said, “We are educating people about bank crime such as card and ATM fraud. We are also teaching them how to use bank cards at the ATMs. They should not ask anyone to assist them at the ATM, not even the security guard. They should rather go inside the bank for help. They should not force the card into the slot, as it might have been tampered with.”He said there are two methods that ATM fraudsters use, namely shoulder surfing and skimming systems. Moodley said with shoulder surfing the perpetrators disturb the ATM users to obtain the pin number of the card so that they can make transactions. With the skimming system they fix ATM mounted devices that capture the information on the card. The device has a camera to obtain the pin number. Moodley said if an ATM user is disturbed or interfered with whilst doing a transaction at the ATM, the card may be skimmed by being removed and replaced back

into the ATM without your knowledge. He said they should cancel the transaction and immediately report the incident using the bank’s stop card toll free number, which is displayed on all ATMs and at the back of the bank card.Busi Madidiza, a resident said, “The challenge we face is that the ATMs swallow the cards. We have learned not to allow strangers to assist us at the ATMs and to be aware of the skimming devices used.”Moses Tlema, chief operating officer of TPY, said that the awareness campaign was held to assist in preventing ATM and bank card fraud during the festive season.

Gauteng Department of Community Safety conducted a mall exhibition at Letsoho Shopping Mall in Katlehong to showcase and inform the community about the programmes and services they render. The representatives of the Gauteng Department of Community Safety handed out pamphlets to community members. They also encouraged and informed them about relevant crime prevention initiatives. Thapelo Moiloa, spokesperson of the MEC of Gauteng Department of Community Safety said, “We are bringing the services to the communities and encouraging them to join community safety structures such as CPF, patrollers and youth desks. This will also help in combating crime around their areas. We also want the men on board to help in fighting crimes such as domestic violence through our

programme - the Men Safety Promoters. We are informing the community members who are dissatisfied with the services rendered by the police to lay complaints with our department. The mall exhibition is a provincial campaign and is helping a lot in combating crime in the malls.”Maureen Mosia, a resident from Ramokonopi section in Katlehong, said the mall exhibition is a brilliant idea in that most people are shopping in the area and they will have access to the information from the department. She said people who are facing domestic violence will now know how to register their complaints. Mosia said the other big challenge facing the community is nyaupe addicts who are stealing their belongings, especially steel gates, to sell.

Happy [email protected] Manzini Primary School’s prayers have been answered. They

requested donations for sanitary towels and the Department of Social Services came to their rescue. The department donated sanitary pads, roll-on deodorant, lotion, Vaseline, toothpaste, toilet paper rolls and bathing soap for each grade 6 and 7 learners at the school. Rose Mgoboza, an educator at the school, demonstrated to the girls on how to use the sanitary pads and emphasised the importance of keeping their body clean. “We appreciate the donations as they are going to assist our girls. In most cases, our learners are from underprivileged backgrounds and their parents can’t afford to buy them sanitary pads. They use toilet paper and old clothes as an alternative. However, such methods can be a health hazard, leading to infections.”The principal of Manzini Primary School, Kenneth Thulani Sibisi said, “We are grateful for this gesture and we are looking forward to a long-lasting partnership with the department of social services. The donations came at the right time for our girls. It is not only a hygienic matter, but it is also a human rights imperative that seeks to restore their dignity.”

Cummins Filtration Engineering Company, based in Woodmead, has voluntarily committed itself

to assisting Manzini Primary School in Zonkizizwe with developmental projects. In their most recent encounter with the school, they worked in the school garden.Rendering community service is Cummins Company’s mission. They makes sure that each employee dedicates some hours into community development work. The principal of Manzini Primary School, Thulani Kenneth Sibisi said, “Last week they were hands on, getting dirty in the garden while removing rubble and irrigating.” He added that Cummins’ operating strategy is not monetary but rather a participatory approach. They did not only sweat in the garden from 8:00 to 13:30, but they also donated a Jojo water tank, irrigation pumps and tools, including spades, rakes, hosepipes and gloves, which will be used for the vegetable garden.Sibisi said, “Learners, teachers, parents and School Governing Board members all joined forces with Cummins in the garden. It was great seeing the school united for one cause and this togetherness will do wonders in building relationships within the school. It seems the old culture is returning whereby leaners did the gardening at school and, in turn, exhibited their skills and expertise at their gardens back home.”It was not the first time Cummins came to assist the school and neither will it be the last. Sibisi added that they said they will come again to work in the garden and they will assist when any other need arises.“I am grateful for what Cummins, all the way from Woodmead in Johannesburg metro, is doing for the school. I wish it can continue doing this for us and other schools if possible. Cummins is unique in that, unlike other companies that do goodwill with the sole purpose of getting publicity or other benefits in return. Its main agenda is being part of the school’s plans and working together with us,” said Sibisi.

Lying to police a serious offenceProviding the police with a false statement has landed a 44-year-old man from Ndlazi section in Katlehong in murky waters. It is alleged that the suspect failed to pay a woman for sexual favours and gave her his licensed firearm and promised to bring back the money and get his firearm.Captain Mega Ndobe, communications officer of Katlehong said, “The suspect came to the police station to open a case regarding a stolen licensed firearm. The case was opened and investigations discovered that the firearm was not stolen but exchanged for the payment of sex. It is alleged that the two parties had an agreement that the suspect would leave his firearm with the woman and come back to get it when he had the payment.”Ndobe said lying to the police is a serious crime, “The suspect ended up telling the truth that the firearm was left with a woman that he failed to pay. The firearm was seized from the woman and the suspect was charged with perjury. The investigations also revealed that the suspect is unfit to carry the firearm due to negligence.”The suspect will appear before the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court to face the charges of perjury.

The suspect is facing the wall after being arrested by the police, charged for perjury.

Hijacked vehicle recovered in an hourA 34-year-old man was arrested for possession of a hijacked car on 24 November in Katlehong.According to Captain Mega Ndobe, communications officer of Katlehong Police Station, the suspect was arrested around 20:00. He said it is alleged that the car was hijacked in Alberton and after an hour it was found in the possession of the suspected hijacker in Katlehong. The owner of the car was still at the charge office in Alberton Police Station, waiting to open a case, when the car was recovered. The suspect was arrested and appeared in the Palm Ridge Court on 25 November facing charges of possession of a hijacked car.

On 24 November, in welcoming the 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children, the Katlehong police, CPF and churches held a gathering at Ezibeleni School of Disabled Children in Katlehong. The event was held to educate people about abuse. The parents were also warned that they can be abused by their children, including them claiming money with a false statement. People were urged to break the silence by reporting any forms of abuse to the nearest police station.

People urged to speak out

A 57-year-old man from Nhlapho section in Katlehong, who is alleged of raping an 8-year-old girl, was rescued by metro police from enraged members of the community who wanted to take the law into their own hands.According to Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson, an observant grade one teacher suspected something amiss with a learner. The teacher informed the learner’s parents, who took her to the clinic. It was confirmed that she had been sexually molested. The one suspect was arrested and the other one is still at large.“It emerged that the two suspects are known by the parents of the victim. They had been, for some time, using sweets to lure the child to their shack in Nhlapo section, where they had been continually abusing the innocent child,” said Kgasago. The case was registered at Katlehong Police Station and the suspect is expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court soon, facing charges of raping a minor.

A 28-year-old man was arrested for hijacking and possession of a hijacked vehicle in Spruitview recently.According to Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson, the EMPD Community Liaison Unit members sighted a white BMW driving recklessly in Spruitview at around 19:00. They stopped the car and, during the questioning of the driver, it emerged that the driver was actually part of a group of three men that had just hijacked a red Golf IV at Chris Hani Mall in Vosloorus. Kgasago said it was unfortunate that the hijacked Golf IV managed to get away. The BMW was also checked and the records showed that it was hijacked in September at Etwatwa. The driver was arrested and the hunt for the red VW Golf IV is underway. The suspect was charged with hijacking and possession of a hijacked vehicle at Katlehong Police Station. He is expected to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court facing charges of hijacking and possession of a hijacked car.

Silo warns drivers to be observant on the road.

The 30-year-old Simphiwe Mashinini’s hip hop single track Lounging with Satan is raising a hullabaloo within some quarters in the Kathorus Township and in music circles. Despite the positive or negative atmosphere associated with it, the talented artist remains resolute that his single track is about tackling social issues which most musicians refrain from raising in their favourite craft. “In this single track, I’m bringing to the fore the untold story of Satan. It is unfortunate that people always embroil it with the fear of the unknown. To me, the word fear is an abbreviation of False Evidence Appearing to be Real. In this single I’m demystifying the myth always associated with Satan,” explained Mashinini. He said the plan is to record an album that will consist of 10 hip hop hit tracks. He described his music as a mirror to be used to reflect on social challenges so that people could inflict change. Mashinini has recorded the single at Sam K Studio in Katlehong. “Prior this project, I have recorded a hip hop single dubbed Zion. My stage name used then was Paipai. Zion was popular within my neighbourhood but was poorly marketed outside my township borders. I was also unemployed then, which impeded the single’s marketing and distribution,” explained Mashinini. He said due to the demise of the initial project, he is calling for interested investors to dig deep in their pockets to invest in his new music venture. The Ekurhuleni Sports Council (ESC) has embarked on an initiative to introduce chess in township schools in a bid to educate youngsters about the sport. According to ESC chess Manager Solomon Mabena, the chess programme started last year in various schools in Kathorus.“We will soon expand the programme to various parts within Ekurhuleni Municipality. Our objective is to convert aspiring chess players into champions while still in their teens. We intend to enlist the services of the sports experts so that they can impart their knowledge to youngsters. The chess league has been set up, which is ESC’s affiliate. Township schools that have learners playing the sport will campaign in that league and showcase their skills,” explained Mabena.Intokozo Primary School chess Coordinator Duduzile

Hlophe cited that they started to take part in the sport last year. At first the progress was at a snail’s pace, until ESC’s recent donation of chess boards and pieces. “We are moving with full speed and learners are regularly practicing their favourite sport. “We are optimistic that we will produce a champion in our school if they are being coached correctly.”Intokozo Primary School Chairperson Manqoba Kunene said the sport helps him to be sharp mentally and it is beneficial to his academic work. He urged fellow youngsters to take part in the sport. “There are enormous opportunities in this sport unlike other mainstream sports. “Aspiring chess players can make it big and represent the country both locally and in international competitions,” concluded Kunene.

Drifter searches for a home

Dicing around and showcasing cycling stunts on BMX bicycles along Katlehong streets is what Monsters Crew (MC) Drifters members like to share. However, with the population explosion and the township car numbers on the rise, the small space restricts them from performing their favourite sport. Speaking to tame TIMES, MC Drifter spokesperson Mpho ‘Knight rider’ Tsubele wants to get his team a practice space. “We want to showcase our talent without fear of being knocked by cars. Performing cycling stunts helps us to refrain from criminal activities taking place in the township.” They practice on an open street in a full view of the onlookers. Tsubele said they have recently identified a space to host their regular practice sessions in Thokoza at Mpilisweni. The identified place used to be the South African National Defence Force barracks. “The place has been deserted for some time now and the building has been vandalised by the community. However, we would like to get permission from relevant authority for us to utilise the space,” said Tsubele. tame TIMES’ attempts to get a comment from a Ward 54 councillor before going to print was unsuccessful.
