Souls before Trophies

In our Lord’s love, we hope you are filled with the Gospel’s blessings, enjoying the

work of His grace, the fruit of His service as well as the companionship of His Holy

Spirit

We hope you educate your children, who are participating in the St Mark’s Festival,

some important principles, such as:

1- The aim is not to win a trophy, but to benefit spiritually, scientifically and

academically in our Christian life.

2- Love is the foundation of everything. How magnificent it is to present the trophy

that you have won to the other competing team!

“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world (all the trophies) and loses

his own soul?” Mark8: 36

3- The Festival’s goals:

- Spiritual growth in Christ

- Better knowledge of the Holy Bible and the church

- The joy of holy companionship with my brothers and sisters

- Physical growth through appropriate activities

- Social success by constructing holy relationships

I hope we as servants encourage our children to achieve these goals and not

get upset with them if they lose a competition, as this reaction will harm them

spiritually, emotionally and socially which in turn will separate them from Christ

and the church

May the Lord bless your labor and service.

The Central Festival Committee

His Grace Anba Moussa

Bishop Moussa

1. SPORTS GENERAL RULES 1. Age Groups are as follows:

Year K-2

Year 3-4

Year 5-6

Year 7-8

Year 9-10

Youth (17 years – 25 years)

All Age (25 +)

2. For players to be eligible to compete in the sporting events they must pass the final examination. Players who fail will not be allowed to participate.

3. Each church is to provide its finalists for the sports’ competition in the form of two teams, two Male and two Female teams. This also applies to individual sports, where churches are to select their best representatives among both males and females for races/individual events.

4. If the church has more than two teams for sports and more than one contestant for individual sports, each church is to hold its own local tryouts to put together the best team or individual forward for each age group event (Running and Swimming is unlimited).

5. Teams that are lacking in number may take players from a younger age group from the same church. Participants may only compete one level above their contesting year group e.g Participants in year 3-4 are eligible to play in year group 5-6 and not 7-8 or above. Youth are not permitted to play in the all age competition.

6. Participants are not allowed to play down a year group under any circumstances; failure to comply will result in automatic disqualification.

7. Supervisors for children on the day will be excluded from playing.

8. All small churches nominating to combine teams with other churches need to notify sporting committee prior to the event with sufficient notice. They also need to be mindful when entering this on the online data base. They only need to enter under ONE CHURCH. Entering under two separate churches will result in double entries on the draw for that particular event.

Page 4: Table of Contents - St Mark Festival

Conditions book 2015 Page 4

9. With the permission from the church’s supervisor, the church may borrow players from other churches within the same age group if they are short in players. The player/s selected must not change throughout the competition and must remain with their adopted church unless they vs their original church team, in this instance the church

short in players may again borrow another player with the permission of the opposing team.

10. There will be no mixed gender teams allowed to participate in the festival. For all team sports, team members must be wearing the same colour T-shirts.

12. All players must conduct themselves in a Christian manner and show good sportsmanship. Failure to do so will result in the individual/team forfeiting the match and getting excluded from the competition.

13. We are applying a zero-tolerance policy on the above and any team found to be in breach of the above rules faces exclusion from the festival.

14. In the individual sports, if a participant races, he/she cannot back up in an older age group race immediately after participating in their age group race.

Page 5: Table of Contents - St Mark Festival

the field before a replacement can be made.

4. All soccer players must be wearing protective shin pads.

5. For a goal to be awarded, the ball must be completely over the marked goal

line.

6. Slide tackling, or tackling a player from behind is not permitted. An indirect free

kick will be awarded against the offending team. If one of these tackles is

committed in the penalty area, a direct free kick will be awarded from the penalty

spot.

7. Any player awarded a RED card will not be permitted to play the rest of the

game. If a player is awarded a red card for the following;

5. Carrying/palming: When a player dribbles the ball with his hand too far to the side or, sometimes, even under the ball.

6. Double Dribble: Dribbling the ball with both hands on the ball at the same time or picking up the dribble and then dribbling again is a double dribble.

7. Held ball: Occasionally, two or more opposing players will gain possession of the ball at the same time. In order to avoid a prolonged and/or violent tussle, the referee stops the action and plays a jump ball.

9. CHESS PLAYING GUIDELINES 2015

1) Each chess piece has its own style of moving. Moves are made to vacant squares

except when capturing an opponent's piece.

2) The king can move exactly one square horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Only

once in every game each king is allowed to make a special move, known as

castling.

3) The Rook moves any number of vacant squares vertically or horizontally. It cannot

jump over pieces, except in the special move of ‘castling.’

4) The Bishop moves any number of vacant squares in any diagonal direction. A

bishop starts on a specific colour (white/black), and stays on this same colour for

the whole game.

5) The Queen can move any number of vacant squares diagonally, horizontally, or

vertically.

6) The Knight moves two squares like the rook and then one square perpendicular to

that. Its move is not blocked by other pieces, i.e. it leaps to the new square. The

knight moves in an "L" or "7" shape (or either shape inverted) with two steps one

direction, a 90° turn, and one step in the new direction.

7) Pawns have the most complex rules of movement:

- A pawn can move forward one square, if that square is unoccupied. If it has not yet

moved, the pawn has the option of moving two squares forward provided both squares

in front of the pawn are unoccupied. A pawn cannot move backwards.

Page 16: Table of Contents - St Mark Festival

Conditions book 2015 Page 16

Pawns are the only pieces that capture differently from how they move. They can

capture an enemy piece on either of the two spaces adjacent to the space in front of

them (i.e., the two squares diagonally in front of them). They cannot move to these

spaces if they are vacant.

The rule of ‘en passant’ will be adhered to.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/En_passant

8) Check: When a player makes a move that threatens the opposing king with capture

(not necessarily by the piece that was moved), the king is said to be in check.

9) Checkmate: If a player's king is placed in check and there is no legal move that

player can make to escape check, then the king is said to be checkmated, the

game ends, and that player loses.

10) Stalemate occurs when

a) Either player cannot technically win

b) A repetition of 3 moves has been made (by both white & black)

c) A player cannot make any legal moves, on their turn.

Page 17: Table of Contents - St Mark Festival

Conditions book 2015 Page 17

The chess rules/instructions printed on the day are shown below:

Chess Tournament rules of Etiquette

1. Parents and persons not specifically delegated as servants for the chess

competition are not allowed in the tournament hall on the day. Servants will be

clearly marked on the day. Please approach them if you have any queries.

2. The first 15 minutes of the game are played at an unregulated speed, however we

are encouraging 30 seconds per move from the start of the game. In the last

10 minutes you will be using a chess clock if one is available. You should be aiming

for 30 seconds per move.

3. If the game continues over 25 minutes a decision will be made by the referee

regarding who is winning, or if the position is drawn.

4. A chess clock may be used as an alternative to adjudication. If you lose on time,

(flag shows up on the chess clock), you will lose the game. The exception is if the

opponent does not have sufficient pieces to win (and you notify the referee

before the flag shows up on the display), or it is a stalemate, then it will be

declared a draw. The referee will settle any disputes.

5. If you touch a piece and you can legally move it, you must move it. If you touch a

piece and move it and take your fingers off it, you cannot take it back (if it is a legal

move).

Page 18: Table of Contents - St Mark Festival

Conditions book 2015 Page 18

6. Please set up your board once the game is over, so the next game can be restarted

and ten minutes for preparation. The director is to be attentive to the time.

9. The judges can close the curtains if they find swearing or bad language being
