COMMITMENT TO CHRISTIAN EDUCATION by The Rev. Gayle McCarty

God has brought us together as the Body of Christ that makes up the parish of St. Luke’s. Our church family is a wonderful mix of cradle Episcopalians, folks from other faith traditions or from no previous tradition. All of us long to grow in the knowledge and love of God. Whether it is mining mysteries of faith, gaining greater understanding of our liturgy, exploring the Creed or you fill in the blank – Christian Education is vital for us to live as faithful disciples of Christ. After all, Tertullian, a third-century theologian, wrote, "Christians are made, not born." To become ever more Christ-like is an ongoing and never-ending human endeavor best done in holy community.

The new session for Christian Education for all ages begins September 17. Opportunities abound for us to grow in our discipleship!

ADULTS - We have an exciting offering for Adult Christian Education on the Apostles’ Creed, which is a foundational belief of our faith. (see page 2 of this issue of The Parish Life for detailed description). Order the book today and join us for this six-week series of informative and formative classes.

YOUTH – (5th Grade and above) - We have an active search process for a part-time Youth Minister who will lead EYC and Sunday morning Christian Education classes for our youth. ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION by Mary Beth Seltzer

REFLECTIONS CLASS

The Reflections Class will join the Adult Christian Education class during the months of September and October. Please watch for updates regarding the date this class will resume.

I believe in what?

On September 17, we will begin a study of Creed by Adam Hamilton. The author “explores not only what Christians believe, but also why they believe it and why it matters.” (Abbington Press)

This six-week study will be facilitated by the members of our Adult Christian Education Committee and The Rev. Gayle McCarty. If you wish to purchase a copy of Creed, it is available online at amazon.com, christianbook.com, or cokesbury.com.

At every Baptism, Burial Rite II and Easter Vigil, we say the Apostle’s Creed. Come explore this statement of Christian beliefs with us at 9:30 a.m. in the Commons.

CHURCH PICNIC - SEPTEMBER 10 by Lindsay Wilhite

It's time for our annual parish picnic! On Sunday, September 10, we will meet at The Cumberland House in downtown Jackson after the 10:30 service. It is just minutes from St. Luke's at 428 N. Cumberland Street. The easiest way to get there is to turn onto E. Deaderick St. from Highland Ave. and drive 0.2 miles. The Cumberland House will be on the right. There is a parking lot off of Cumberland St. and plenty of street parking. If you haven't seen it, you are in for a treat. It is a beautifully restored c.1870 Italianate house with a covered garden pavilion and huge grassy area. Bring your cameras because it will make a lovely backdrop for some family photos!

Once again St. Luke's will provide fried chicken and drinks, and you provide the sides and desserts. There will be a bouncy house for the kids and lawn games to enjoy. Bring your chairs, blankets, frisbees, etc., and get ready to spend some time outdoors with our church family!

WELCOME TO THE PULPIT CANON DAVIS We are delighted to welcome The Rev. Canon Zabron A. Davis (Chip) as our guest preacher, Sunday, September 10. Canon Davis is the Canon to the Ordinary for The Episcopal Diocese of West Tennessee. As such, he manages all matters diocesan as assigned by Bishop Johnson including responsibility for canonical questions, supervising diocesan accounting, liaison with Bishop & Council and the Finance Committee, and parish and clergy. He served for over 19 years in various parishes in the Diocese of Mississippi. He is married to Cathy and is an avid fly fisherman and a doting grandfather. Make plans to join us and help welcome Chip+ and Cathy!

ST. LUKE’S WELCOMES ALL TO THE BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS - SUNDAY, OCTOBER 1 AT 4:00 P.M.

Look for the tent and St. Luke's banner on the lot on the corner of Shannon and West Lafayette Streets, across from the Farmers Market in downtown Jackson. Join us for a prayer service and individual pet blessings and then enjoy free hot dogs, chips, drinks and pet treats!

ALL HANDS NEEDED FOR THE EPISCOPAL DIOCESE OF WEST TENNESSEE ANNUAL CONVENTION by Tricia Odom, Senior Warden and Mary Nenarella, Junior Warden

We have started forming committees for the West Tennessee Diocesan Convention to be held at St. Luke’s on November 17 and 18 and we are looking for many volunteers for each committee to make it a success. We have everything from sit down jobs to some heavy lifting and could really use your help. If you can help at any time during those two days, please contact Tricia, Mary or Trudy (phone numbers are below) and we will make sure to put your name on our volunteer list.

Also, in preparation for the convention we will be having a parish workday on September 30 to organize some of the upstairs classrooms and a few other areas for some of the smaller break-off meetings during the convention. Please mark your calendars. Further reminders will be sent out in advance of that date.

Thank you for your willingness to help make this convention a success. Please let us know if you have any questions or have a specific committee on which you would like to serve.

THE FOLLOWING ARE AREAS IN WHICH YOU CAN VOLUNTEER

PARISH LIFE DEADLINE September 15 is the deadline for articles, photos and schedules for the October newsletter.

REQUEST FROM THE PROPERTY COMMITTEE by Mary Nenarella, Property Committee Chair

Just a reminder...please do not bring your rummage sale items to church until December 1. We are working on the old EYC room, the storage rooms, and upstairs hallway to get that area ready to use for the convention. We will not have room to store your items until the convention is over. Thank you!

OPENINGS FOR ALTAR FLOWERS, SUPPLIES AND CANDLES Please check the calendars across from the elevator for openings in each of these categories. We have an immediate need for altar flowers for September 17 and October 1. These dates are first come, first serve.

DOOR CORPS - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! by John Nenarella

We are looking to add new members to the St. Luke's Door Corps. The duties are “manning” the office/nursery door on Sunday mornings from 9:00 a.m. until 10:20 a.m. Your duty is to open the door and greet the incoming parishioners. We are hoping to have enough people that you would only be "on duty" once every two months.

MINISTRY PROFILE - MARTHA PEDDY, FINANCE COMMITTEE, OFFICE VOLUNTEER & ALTAR GUILD I am a life-long Episcopalian who grew up in Central Kentucky. I have wonderful memories of my childhood experiences at the Episcopal churches in both Frankfort and Bowling Green, Kentucky. I have lived in Jackson since 1966 but did not attend St. Luke’s regularly until 1990, when Gus Middleton urged me to become active at St. Luke’s. Ever grateful to Gus, I have since served on the Vestry and served as Junior Warden. Currently I serve on the Finance Committee and the Altar Guild, I am active in ECW and Foyer activities, and I help in the church office. Also, I was an eager participant in the Bible study group led by Dr. Brady Whitehead for many years. I am a retired bank trust officer and have been widowed since 2011. One thing that you might not know about me is that I have an age-related terror of electronics, but I once worked for IBM and actually taught computer programming. I am grateful for all of the friendships I have made at St. Luke’s and for the centering effect that St. Luke’s has had in my life.

FOYER GROUPS by John Nenarella

We are looking for people who would like to be placed on a Substitute List for Foyer. You may be interested in Foyer but do not know if you want to commit to four dinners, or you may not be able to host. There are occasions where people cannot make their Foyer dinner, and then the convener could refer to the Sub List and give you a call. If interested, contact John Nenarella at 731-989-9713 or [email protected].

CALL TO PRAYER Almighty God, who hast given us this good land for our heritage: We humbly beseech thee that we may always prove ourselves a people mindful of thy favor and glad to do thy will. Bless our land with honorable industry, sound learning, and pure manners. Save us from violence, discord, and confusion; from pride and arrogance, and from every evil way. Defend our liberties, and fashion into one united people the multitudes brought hither out of many kindreds and tongues. Endue with the spirit of wisdom those to whom in thy Name we entrust the authority of government, that there may be justice and peace at home, and that, through obedience to thy law, we may show forth thy praise among the nations of the earth. In the time of prosperity, fill our hearts with thankfulness, and in the day of trouble, suffer not our trust in thee to fail; all which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. BCP p. 820

Saint Luke’s Episcopal Church The Parish Life - September 2017

RIFA NEEDS FOR SEPTEMBER

The RIFA need for this month is Ap-plesauce with the foil lids. Let’s fill the wagon!

SYMPATHIES OF THE PARISH are extended to …

… Rick McCune & family on the death of his mother, Peggy McCune. … Kristi Langsdon & family on the death of her father, Donald Wilson. … Luther Crabb on the death of his wife, Faye Crabb

SERVANTHOOD by The Rev. Deacon Tommy Rhoads

This month’s mission partner focus highlights St. Luke’s PIE partner, Parkview Learning Center. Partners in Education (PIE) is a program of the Jackson Chamber of Com-merce, and Parkview Learning Center has been St. Luke’s PIE partner for many years.

This past winter the Young Families Ministries collected coats and deliv-ered them to the school, and just this past month we filled the school bus in the Narthex with school supplies for the Parkview students. Principal Jason Newman says they started the school year with 40 students: one from elementary, six middle school, and 35 high school. They are always needing pencils and wide-ruled notebook paper.

Principal Newman extends a welcome to anyone who wants to visit the school. He says to drop in any time.

Parkview Learning Center is located just about eight blocks from St. Luke's at 905 East Chester Street. Please keep the staff, teachers and stu-dents of Parkview in your prayers throughout the month of September.

RECYCLING NEWS

Our faithful recycling team of Harry Ecoff and Chuck Humphrey are doing a great job with the recycling collection! Please bring your paper, aluminum cans, and plastics to the church on the last Sunday of each month for the Jerry Holt Memorial Recycling Drive. The recycling date for September will be September 24.

SEPTEMBER PET SUPPLIES DRIVE FOR DOWNTOWN DOGS GROUP

For the month of August, we will collect Purina Cat or Kitten Chow.

Please place your donations in or at the collection box in the Narthex. Thanks!

SCHOOL UNIFORMS DISTRIBUTED by Andrea Hazlehurst So far 65 uniforms have been distributed through six different schools by the Outreach Committee. This fund was established several years ago through generous donations from our parish! The children, their parents, and their teachers have been extremely grateful for these donations! Many times teachers will purchase uniforms for their students out of their own pockets! These uniforms have been a blessing to many!

The Bus Stops Here by The Rev. Deacon Tommy Rhoads

Do you have your Snack Backpack School Bus Bank yet?

RIFA has asked all their outreach partners to Pack the Bus. Loose change, coins, small bills -- every little bit helps. For the next two weeks, pack your school bus, and on September 17 we will have a special in-gathering and make our donation to RIFA. The Snack Backpack program is growing by leaps and bounds; RIFA distributes over 1,000 backpacks per week. Jackson's school children need our help. Thanks!

School Bus Banks are available in the Narthex.
