“Hear me, all of you, and understand.

Nothing that enters one from outside can defile that person;

but the things that come out from within are what defile.”

Jim Rooney Ministry &Volunteer Appreciation Celebration Weekend!

“In the same way, let your light shine before people, so they can see the good

things you do and praise your Father who is in heaven.” —Matthew 5:16

As Christians the best legacy that we leave for those who will come after us is the legacy of Faith.

Just think about those who came before us. They built churches, prayed as a community and

shared their God given talents so that Jesus Christ’s values and teachings would continue making a

difference in people’s lives. Today, we as St. Athanasius community, deeply appreciate and

celebrate all of us who have enriched and ignited the ministries of our St. Athanasius

Parish through our time, talents and

treasure.

The Jim Rooney Ministry and Volunteer

Appreciation Celebration started a few years ago

in Memory of Jim Rooney who was a very active

member of our parish, and who through his

talents took our parish community to the next

level. We strongly believe that gratitude is an

essential part of our Christian values. Jesus always gave thanks to God for communicating with

him, speaking to him, and for the mission he was entrusted with. But Jesus did not stop there; he

empowered his disciples with the Holy Spirit to spread the gospel, and to make his love, mercy and

justice known to all. We, at St. Athanasius, continue day-by-day living out this calling by virtue of

our baptism. We also recognize the many gifts of the Holy Spirit already active in our community.

This weekend, we are so excited to honor and present the Parish Service Award to

Claire and John Labbe. This Parish Service Award is given to parishioners whose passion, faith,

and love for Jesus Christ is made known to us by dedicated service and many volunteer hours to

our St. Athanasius parish community. Claire and John have been parishioners for 14 years. Claire

has been a member of the Parish Pastoral Council, Renew My Church Team, Parent School

Organization, Teacher’s Aide, Children’s Liturgy, FRIEND ministry, Women’s Club, Lector,

Eucharistic Minister, Baptism Preparation Volunteer, Girl Scouts, Covid Reopening Team

Member, and the Youth Ministry Advisory Board. John has been a Lector, Lector Coordinator,

Ministry Schedule Volunteer, Altar Servers Co-Coordinator and Baptisms Preparation Volunteer.

Claire and John have truly created an impact on our parish ministerial life.

We are so blessed to have parishioners like Claire and John who love to carry on Jesus’

mission and pass down to others our Christian legacy of faith. And today is a day of

celebration, gratitude, and recognition to all of you, too.

Happy and Blessed Ministries Day!

In the Lord’s Joy,

Fr. Hernan

SPIRITUAL COMMUNION PRAYER My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed

Sacrament. I love You above all things and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You

sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself

wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

We are excited, as we continue to reopen, to announce

that we are planning an early September return of

Children’s Liturgy of the Word and we need volunteers

to help us out with leading and facilitating.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a chance for our

children to hear the Word of God in a way that meets

them where they are, and reflect on how the Word can

come alive in their lives. Our children are sent forth at

the beginning of Mass before the First Reading.

For more information or to recommit to volunteering in

this ministry, please contact: James Holzhauer-Chuckas,

ObSB at [email protected] or Amy

Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time, August 29, 2021 | 9

!"#$by Vinal Van Benthem, sfo

August 29, 2021 Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

Sometimes it seems that a hospital is a world of opposites – sterilizing instruments and emptying bedpans; washing

hands and wiping bottoms; serving nutritious meals and inserting a feeding tube; following specific medical directions

while recognizing that it is sometimes necessary to be flexible in carrying them out. In the course of each day caregivers

are called upon to make dozens of decisions for the good of those they care for, even when implementing the decision

may be difficult or even offensive.

The Pharisees and scribes Mark writes about in today’s Gospel would probably not have made very good caregivers in

a present-day hospital. “[T]he purification of cups and jugs and kettles and beds” are important when they are being

done for the good of the other; but sometimes the job at hands requires touching a dead body, or a menstruating

woman, or even a leper. Certainly Jesus knew this, as we read elsewhere in the Scriptures. Jesus knew when it was

appropriate to adhere to the law but He also knew when the law must take second place.

There was a time in Catholic practice when everyone knew exactly what to do and when to do it. We knew when to eat

meat and when to eat fish. We knew when to wear a hat and when to take it off. We knew these things because this was

“what we had always done.” People could tell by looking at us that we were Catholic. At least, that is, if they happened

to be looking at us at dinnertime on Friday or if they saw us getting ready to go to church on Sunday. But what about

those people who worked with us on Monday?

“From within…their hearts come evil thoughts…theft…greed, malice, deceit…envy…” The feelings that rise up in us

at times like this have little to do with what we eat on Friday. “This people honors me with their lips…” And we

probably don’t look much different to the people who see us at Church on Sunday. The real question is, what do

people see when they look at us on Monday?
