Message from the Chairman Season so far and the Final Push

I am delighted to see an improved standard of cricket being played across all the club’s junior and senior teams this season and an increase in overall membership and participation. With Junior leagues now mostly finished, it is gratifying to know that our junior boys have been competitive in their competitions and our junior ‘Cygnets’ girls have been trail blazers.

Looking at development and senior cricket we have more emerging young players making an impact at this level with some eye catching performances. After last season’s record breaking three from four senior teams promoted we knew that this season would be a lot tougher. With only four games of the season remaining, all four XIs have a great deal to play for (there’s nothing worse than end of season dead rubbers). Player availability across all teams is now hugely important to ensure we keep our 1s and 3s in their divisions and help push the 2s and 4s onto promotion. So, let’s come together again and make this season another season to remember!

Walton on the Radio! Everyone at Walton knows that we are one of the best local cricket clubs… But now eve-ryone in Surrey and Hampshire knows it too! The cricket club managed to secure a slot on the Friday morning breakfast show of Eagle Radio, with Jamie Mann representing us proudly. He was able to talk about the histo-ry of the club, our successes last season and how we are getting on in 2016. A big thanks to Jamie and Graham Neale who helped the club with this amazing positive publicity in the local community.

2016 has been another season of growth and development for the junior sec-tion, despite the best efforts of the weather. A pre-season publicity campaign seems to have helped to boost numbers of the youngest members and we have run well-attended training sessions on Fridays and Sundays for 15 to 5 year olds (and younger), for boys and for girls. It has been great to see so many seven year olds and younger participating in games and skills develop-ment on Sunday mornings and we hope that this will be just the beginning of a long association with the club and with cricket. Teams at all but one age groups from under 8 to under 15 have participated in the West Surrey youth Cricket league and season summaries from a selection of the teams are all in-cluded below. It has also been a milestone year in the development of girls cricket at the club: more on that below. There been some notable successes, including decent cup runs for all the teams. A big thank you to the team man-agers and administrators who enable all these games to happen.

U12 Season Report Under 12s have had a mixed season this year, with some strong victories but also some big defeats, especially where our batting has proved a bit vulnerable: the standard we encounter in our leagues can be quite varia-ble. And the weather played a disruptive part with some games unable to be completed as time ran out before holidays began. The highlight of the season was probably a low-scoring tight victory in the last over at Valley End. This is a group of committed boys who enjoy playing togeth-er and are a pleasure to coach.

Ian Whitehouse

It has been a great season for the U11s. They finished 4th in the main league winning 5 matches and reached the final of the u11 cup. Unfortunately they were soundly beaten by an excellent Esher team. There has been a huge improvement in numbers in the squad, up to 22, and their confidence in their own ability improving with every match. Special mention in the batting honours goes to Oliver Pascall (U10) who has been outstanding throughout the year and excellent contributions from Ryan Bradley and Jake Bainbridge. In the bowling depart-ment, Daniel Roberts has been unbelievably consistent and the pace of George Bennett and Joshua Oosterkamp has been very difficult to play against. Mattie Cunliffe has bowled well and the spin of Zain Wilde improved with every match. The squad has developed well during the season and if numbers remain the same, we will enter both leagues next season.

Mark Bainbridge

U11 Season Report

The objective of this year was to give as much playing time across the 19 boys registered. I believed this was achieved with the availability given and there was cer-tainly a sense of enjoyment from all the boys playing their first ever cricket matches. Out of 11 matches, there were good wins against Weybridge girls, Bagshot, Pyrford, Englefield Green and East Molesey, which was a great effort. The pleasing aspect of this first season was the improvement shown throughout the summer even though the side changed quite heavily over every game. The boys have listened well and this was shown with strong individual performances with both bat and ball, but also very noticeably in the fielding department which I’m trying to impress is such an important part of the game. I would like to thank all those parents who have helped out in whatever capacity they have to make this first year run so smoothly. I would like to pay par-ticular thanks to David and Martin for stepping in and covering when I couldn’t make the matches, and also to Adam London for his excellent coaching on the Sunday mornings.

Paul Bainbridge

U8 Season Report The Walton Cygnets had a truly fantastic season. The bril-liant new kit, as pictured below, and sponsored by our wonderful partners Huxley Hound, really helped to unite the team spirit and invented our famous Huxley huddle! The season was about getting the girls thinking together and playing competitive friendlies against our boys and other clubs, honing our skills in a game scenario which has led to them voicing what they want to practice in nets. We are hoping to play more games in August and keep think-ing about cricket throughout the winter months. We are raising the age to U14 next season and already looking forward to building on all the success so far made in 2016!

Walton CC Tour to Sussex

The Walton Tour to Sussex was once again a great week enjoyed by all who ventured down to the south coast. Three fixtures against Havant, Waterlooville and Stirlands were played, With Walton coming out on top against Waterlooville, and losing two competitive games of cricket against the other two sides. Match report from the Waterlooville game is below, written by the successful captain for the day, Ed Hougasian:

Walton arrived at Waterlooville having never beaten their hosts and things didn’t start as planned as captain Hougy lost the toss on a glorious, yet hot summer’s day and the visitors were asked to field.

Dominy and Wilde started well with the ball with the former picking up 2 early wickets to put some early pressure on the hosts. Mikey produced a useful 8 over spell of bowling which was rewarded by claiming a stumping thanks to some good glovework from Greety. The bowlers were rotated regularly as the remain-ing Waterlooville batsmen came and went with some good catches being held, in particular Dukey’s tumbling effort at cow corner helping OC to claim extraordinary figures of 3-3 from 4 overs. In the end, Walton bowled the hosts out for 135 in the last over after a very good fielding effort.

Eddy and Tom Cates started Walton’s reply however the latter was thwarted by a fast inswinging yorker early on before Greety and Sharpey were also cleaned up by the Sri Lankan overseas. Eddy looked as calm as ever, stroking shots through the off side and dismissing loose deliveries to the on side boundary. As the visi-tors closed in on their modest target, both Eddy and subsequently Des were dis-missed trying to finish the game in style. In the end, the game was won by 5 wickets much to the delight of the watching squad members with a beer in hand.

Many thanks go to Waterlooville for hosting us yet again, putting out a good team and for their generous hospitality. Several beers were shared before returning to the Woolly in preparation for a night out in Pompey.

‘Curtain to close on Evening Standard Challenge Trophy'

This headline in a June 2008 edition of the Evening Standard, recently discov-ered in the pavilion score-box, brought back many memories of sixteen years of the Club’s memorable and notewor-thy involvement in a prestigious com-petition.

On 7 September 2008, after sixteen years, the Evening Standard Challenge Trophy, the premier knock-out compe-tition for the top one hundred clubs in the Greater London area, ended at the Brit Oval with a victory for Ealing over Sunbury. When releasing the news, Tournament Director David Willis said, ‘All good things come to an end and the Evening Standard has been under financial pressure for a few years now so London’s cricketers have been very fortunate in receiving the support they have from the newspaper. Prize money alone since 1993 has been over £200,000, directly invested into the coffers of London’s clubs’.

For Walton there were a number of matches worthy of recall. In 1997 the Club grabbed the newspaper’s cricket headlines with, 'Goodnight Barnet, as the Walton’s send them packing for just 19'. This is surely one of the high-lights of our involvement in the com-petition. It was on Sunday 10 June 2007 that Barnet B’s earned an unen-viable place in the competition’s record books when, in a second round match, we dismissed them for 19 runs! Our chief destroyers were Miller (4-1-9-4) and, with identical figures, Bell (4-1-9-4). Two run-outs by Giles Henderson and Paul Bainbridge completed the rout. The bowlers also gave Barnet a helping hand as 7 of their 19 runs came from wides and no-balls!

The north London side were dismissed inside ten overs by a Walton team who required just eight overs to reach the target, losing the wickets of Matt Haddow and George Vaughan along the way. Out of interest, the previous lowest total in the competition was 32, scored by Ashford against Esher in 2005. Reflecting on the astonishing result, the captain, Giles Henderson, said afterwards 'It was a pretty bizarre game, all over in an hour and five minutes and that included a ten mi-nute interval between innings. It was-

n't a good pitch and the ball kept low but it was still just one of those days. I felt sorry for Barnet but at least it was better than conceding'. The third round, unsurprisingly, proved to be a much tougher hurdle. A home tie against Upminster, an Essex League Premier side, proved to be a bridge too far and Walton duly exited the competition.

However, perhaps the most enduring memory was our involvement in the 1995 competition when the Club pro-gressed majestically into the semi-finals with victories over, Bishops Stortford, Mitcham, Brondesbury, Sun-bury and Bromley, all of which were teams from their counties’ respective premier divisions. The reward for some outstanding cricket was a home tie against local Surrey rivals. Malden Wanderers.

There was no shortage of talent on view in the Wanderers’ team. They were led by Neil Stewart, son of Micky and brother of Alec, both of whom came to Ashley Park to provide vocal support. Their side also included two exceptional Surrey players, Ben Hol-lioake and Ian Ward, both of whom were subsequently capped by England.

Australian born Ben Hollioake was an exceptionally talented cricketer who tragically died in a car crash whilst driving in Perth in March 2002, aged 24 years. His early sporting skills, to-gether with those of his brother Adam, were developed at Woburn Hill Prep School. Ben then went to Millfield School and upon leaving joined Malden Wanderers before being offered a con-tract by Surrey CCC. During his short career with Surrey he played in two Test matches and twenty ODIs. He was essentially a batsman but he also took twelve international wickets.

Ian Ward, another Millfield School alumni, needs little introduction to cricket followers as he is now one of the familiar faces fronting Sky's inter-national cricket coverage. His career was plucked from the doldrums in 1997 when he was given a second chance by Surrey, five years after be-ing released by the County having played only one First Class match. His restoration brought County success and recognition from England with five caps in the Test series’ against Paki-stan and Australia. In 2004 he joined Sussex but, following a season of inju-ries, he retired at the end of the 2005 season and joined Sky.

Walton were undeterred by this array of talent and why not. In the early rounds they had disposed of a string of strong opposition and at the time they were riding high in Division 1 of the Eve Surrey Championship. Led by wicketkeeper batsmen Iain Turner, the batting line-up was strong and includ-ed present day veterans Mark and Paul Bainbridge who were supported by Mark Grant and Greg Lee. The bowling attack had variety and proved ...

The Road to the Semi Final

...very effective with Andy Holder and Iain Blair sharing the new ball. Waiting in the wings were the varied spin threats of Noel Brett, Nick Coyle and, of course, 'Baino'. And if things were not going well, the captain could always turn to 'PC', as he did in the match against Brondesbury and who duly obliged with 5-33.

On a scorching Sunday afternoon in late August, a large crowd saw Neil Stewart win the toss and elect to bat with Malden eventually posting a respectable 230 for 9 off their allotted 50 overs. On an unfriendly wicket, Ben Hollioake went cheaply but despite the combined efforts of the spinning trio of Mark Bainbridge, Nick Coyle and Noel Brett (4-48), Ian Ward could not be dislodged and he went on to make a splendid, undefeated match winning innings of 88.

Faced with a challenging run chase, Walton's early season batting form sadly deserted them. They struggled against the bowling of Ben Walters (4-17) and some very sharp fielding, eventually slumping to 168 all out in 45.4 overs, a tantalis-ing, 62 runs short of their target.

The very talented group of play-ers who represented the Club during the ‘95’ season can quite rightly look back on their achievements with great pride. They created a marvellous team spirit and delivered some out-standing performances on the field. However, despite their Tro-phy semi-final appearance and a runner’s-up finish in Division 1 of the Eve Surrey Championship, their season-long performances were not fully rewarded. As a consequence, there was an un-derstandable element of disap-pointment at the end of the cam-paign.

However, the year finished on a brighter note when Nick Coyle was voted the Evening Standard Player of the Season. This was a fitting reward for Nick's consistency throughout the year which reaped him a hatful of league and cup wickets. Nick received his trophy at the Evening Standard annual cricket awards dinner, held at the Cafe Royal in November. Belat-edly, due to an administrative oversight, the Club re-ceived a cheque for £750.00 as a losing semi-finalist.

A brilliant finale to a splendid season for both Nick and Walton-on-Thames Cricket Club.

@WOTcricket

It is not often that you get to obliterate a side who is top of the table in club sport. I was fortunate enough to be a part of such a side against valley End for the 2nd XI in July. It was an afternoon where everything came together and everyone in the side contributed to a fantastic performance and result.

To beat top of the table by 9 wickets and leap frog them with the points secured from the win was a great feeling and a brilliant team achievement. Personal highlight of the season… so far!
