Catawba’s football team entered the final
game clinging to a chance for a share of the
league title and a NCAA II playoff berth.
It was not to be; Lenoir-Rhyne won that
final game. Wrapping up with a winning
season, 6-4 overall and 4-2 in the SAC, this
season produced several standout moments.
In the win at Wingate, receiver Brandon Bunn set school
records with four touchdown catches and 247 yards
receiving. The previous record for receiving yards had
stood since 1968 when Ike Hill posted 215 yards against
Carson-Newman. Also during the Wingate game, Bunn
eclipsed the career touchdown record of Nick Means.
By the end of the season, Bunn tallied a total of 30
touchdowns in his career.

MENCatawba’s men will face a daunting
task in 2010-11 to add a fifth straight
NCAA II post-season trip to its resume.
The Indians lost a combined 73% of its
scoring and 62% of its rebounding with the
departure of four key seniors along with
top post player Stephen Coles.
Dominick Reid returns to lead the offense.
The point guard was fourth on the team in
scoring last season at 8.9 points a game and
dished out a team-leading 104 assists.
Joining Reid in the backcourt from last
season is Justin Huntley, Cameron
Lovelace and Trey Shoemaker among
those who played in 20 or more games.
Huntley saw action in every game and
although looked at for defense, the junior
chipped in with nearly four points a game.
Lee Martin and Stuart Thomson are the
only two that return to the front court who
saw action in over half the games. Martin
had a solid freshman season as he averaged
4.7 points and 3.4 rebounds. Thomson
returned after being sidelined a year with
cancer to start 21 contests.
The Indians will look to several newcomers
to step in and fill the void left from last
year’s departed players. Keon Moore will
give Catawba play in the post, while Chris
Watson and Chris Tyree will join the
back court.

SWIMMINGThe Catawba swim teams look to several returners to lead them in
2010-11. On the men’s side, the Indians graduated it most decorated
swimmer in Patrik Drakes, who twice advanced to the NCAA II Nationals.
Returning to lead the men are Mikael Karlsson and Alex Higganbotham.
Both swam NCAA “B” cut times last season and will look to improve on
those times to grab a spot in the nationals. For the women, Katie Huff,
Ashley Owens and Laurenn Singleton had “B” cut times.
Owens swam in August representing the United States at the
International Paralympic Committee World Championships
in the Netherlands. The sophomore earned four medals,
including three gold. She also helped the U.S. set a new
world record in the 4x100 freestyle relay.
More news & notes:Our Chiefs Club Board of Directors is interacting with our

FOOTBALLcontinued from front
The second individual moment came
in a loss to Tusculum when sophomore
L.J. McCray not only put his name
in Catawba’s record book but the
NCAA II record pages. McCray
became just the seventh player in
NCAA II history (and first at Catawba)
to return two kickoffs for touchdowns in
one game. He had run-backs of 99 and 94
yards, and finished the day with a NCAA
II record 304 yards on six returns.
VOLLEYBALLThe volleyball team finished the
regular season strong with five
straight wins entering the league
tournament, which Catawba hosted.
The late season surge ended with
a five-set loss to Carson-Newman
in the first round of the SAC
Tournament resulting in a
final 14-13 record.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Whitmer and junior
Shay Meeks have been the hitting
leaders. Whitmer has posted 282 kills
with Meeks adding 268. Whitmer has also
added 287 digs, 38 blocks and 15 aces.
Freshman Anna Logan has been a key
in the middle, recording team-leading
totals in blocks (82) and aces (16)
while adding 177 kills.
CROSS COUNTRYBoth cross country teams will run
at the NCAA II Southeast Region
meet after the men finished fifth
and the women sixth at the SAC
Championships. Sophomore Christian
Crifasi ran to second team All-SAC
honors, while the women placed two
freshmen, Olivia Myers and Peyton
Thompson, on the all-conference squad.
Crifasi ran his career-best at the
conference meet and has led the men
in all seven races. He was the top
Division II runner in four of those meets.
Myers was the women’s top runner in the
seven races to date, posting four top ten
finishes which included being runner-up
at the Greensboro meet.

MEN’S SOCCERThe Catawba men won
10 matches for the first
time since 2006 as the
Indians posted a
10-8-1 record.
Catawba suffered a
narrow 2-1 loss to
league co-champ
Carson-Newman in
the opening round of
the tournament to end its season.
Catawba also won three
conference matches which was
the most since 2005.
Sophomore Carson Smith, one of only nine
returners from a year ago, led the new vamped
lineup with nine goals and eight assists. He was
selected to the all-conference second team at
midfield. Two newcomers, Corey Faughnan and
Kyle Griewisch, finished behind Smith with four goals each.
The Catawba Indians started four new defenders and a freshman
goalkeeper for the majority of the season and posted four shutouts
and allowed just 31 goals over 19 matches.
WOMENThe Catawba women have moved up
one spot in the conference standings
in each of the last three years and if
that continues the Lady Indians will
return to the top four of the league.
Catawba returns nearly its entire squad
from last season, losing just one senior in
Brooke Whitley. Nisha Long is taking
the upcoming season off, while Maggie
Sullivan went down in the pre-season
with a knee injury.
Junior All-conference performer Dana
Hicks had a stellar year for the ladies last
season, averaging a double-double of 15.1
points and 11.2 rebounds. Senior Milica
Ivanovic led the team in three-pointers,
canning 57, while finishing second on the
squad in scoring (13.1), rebounding (5.3)
and assists (55).
Two other regular starters return in guard
Kisha Long and forward Elizabeth
Merritt. Long posted an 8.5 scoring
average a year ago, while Merritt tossed in
3.7 points and pulled down 4.1 rebounds in
her initial season.
Up front, Catawba has depth from Renee
Welfare and Taylor May along with
newcomer Courtney Mull. The Lady
Indians also have plenty of experience in
the back court with Anna Dellapenta
and Jolysa Connor seeing action in 20+
games. Freshman Lauren Lewis will
look to get into the mix at the guard spot.
WOMEN’S SOCCERAfter losing 60% of its goal scoring
from a year ago, the Catawba
women struggled offensively.
The Lady Indians scored 21
goals over 18 matches and
tallied over one goal just
four times. Despite the
lack of scoring, Catawba
went 7-8-3 with 13 of
the matches being
decided by a goal or less.
Two freshmen, Juliana Conte
and Athena Bless, led the
team on offense. Bless
scored six goals, while
Conte had three goals and a
team-high seven assists.
Juniors Erinn Wescoat and
Sydney Robertson finished with five and four goals,
respectively. Conte was named SAC Co-Freshman of the
Year, while senior defender Alexa Baird earned first
team all-conference honors.
