ABouT The Ged TeSTS The GED Tests serve only one purpose - to certify a high

school-level of academic knowledge and skills. The GED Tests certify these competencies, no matter where or

in what manner the individual learned them. Passing the GED Tests demonstrates the knowledge and skills of a high school graduate. Ninety-seven (97) percent of colleges and universities accept

the GED credential as equivalent to a traditional high school diploma. (College Board: 2001) More than 90 percent of U.S. employers consider those who

earned their GED diplomas the same as traditional high school graduates with regard to hiring, salary, and opportunity for advancement. (Society for Human Resource Management: 2002) according to the Bureau of labor Statistics, those who have

a high school diploma, including those with a gEd diploma, earn $7,400 more a year than those who did not graduate from high school. This difference represents a 35 percent increase in median annual earnings. (Occupational Outlook Quarterly: Spring 2002)

Ged TeST PrePArATion Students are strongly urged to enroll in our GED Test Preparation class. Registered students are given the Official GED Practice Test to determine if they are ready to take the “real” test. After this assessment, students use books, computers, videos and DVD’s to improve their skills. Fees: $70 due at registration ($40 registration fee per

semester + $30 Book Card deposit), cash only.

uniform Complaint Procedure and nondiscrimination StatementThe Centinela Valley Union High School District is committed to principles of equal opportunity and nondiscrimination. Each student has the right of equal access to an education, and each employee has the right of equal employment opportunity, without discrimination on the basis of sex, race, color, national origin, or disability. Harassment of students or employees on the basis of any of these characteristics creates unequal opportunities because it interferes with a student’s or employee’s education or work performance, and it creates an atmosphere of intimidation and hostility. Such discriminatory harassment is therefore a violation of District policy and may result in disciplinary actions ranging from verbal reprimand to dismissal or expulsion. The District will neither condone nor tolerate such harassment. The District assures employees and students that no disciplinary or retaliatory action will be taken against anyone as a result of their expression of concerns regarding racial/ethnic incidents or tensions, or who has filed a discrimination complaint with the District or with governmental compliance agencies, or who has asserted his or her rights to be free from unlawful discrimination. The District does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin (including race/ethnic harassment), sex (including sexual harassment), disability, or age in any of its policies, procedures, or practices. This nondiscrimination policy covers admission and access to, and treatment and employment in District program and activities, including vocational education. Inquiries regarding equal opportunity policies or District complaint procedures may be directed to:

Biomedical careers academyMarine science academyacademy of Media arts Lawndale High School (LWHS) has been designated as one of California’s Most Distinguished Schools for 2009, and a finalist in the United States for the National Center for Urban School Transformation (NCUST) Award. After meeting the rigorous criteria, only twenty five schools in the United States were named finalists, and Lawndale was one of them! Lawndale was also listed in U.S. News and World Report as one of the top 400 high schools in the Nation.

LWHS students have been awarded the Millennium Gates Scholarships for the past six consecutive years. Only 1,000 scholarships are awarded each year and Lawndale students have been awarded these scholarships because of their academic and leadership qualifications.

In 2009-2010, three of Lawndale graduates received the scholarships and are destined for Williams College, Harvard University, and UC Riverside.

The school’s infrastructure has been greatly modernized. Plumbing, heating, and resurfacing were part of modernization projects that have been completed. The school is also scheduled for Phase I construction projects that will make the campus more conducive to learning.

Message froM superintendent

Jose fernandez:

I am proud to say that Centinela Valley

Union High School District has made

significant strides this year to improve

student achievement. The new school

board is committed to expanding the

Small Learning Communities at each high

school and we now have nine academies

that our students can choose from. These academies provide

opportunities in public education that help students learn skills

and adapt academics to relate core instruction to the real world.

We have had many of our students receive scholarships to

prestigious universities throughout the United States and I am

very proud to say that one of our students will enter the United

States Naval Academy, a first for Centinela Valley Union High

School District!

Our teachers and staff provide the highest educational

opportunities for the students of Centinela Valley. But, it is the

support of our community and parents that help our students

succeed. I want to take this opportunity to thank the many

sponsors of our scholarships that help to financially support our

students. I especially want to thank our parents for entrusting

your student to us! I look forward to this school year and

invite you to visit our campuses and become part of the

Centinela Valley union High school district’s team.

Send your child to an outstanding CVUHSD School!

The Centinela Valley Union High School District was formed in 1905.

In 2009-10 CVUHSD had a high school student population of approximately 6,800. They attended either Hawthorne, Lawndale, or Leuzinger High School for the comprehensive secondary programs. Continuation and Independent Study Programs are offered at Lloyde High School. In addition, CVUHSD maintains an extensive adult education program that serves over 9,000 students. The feeder school districts of the Centinela Valley are Hawthorne, Lawndale, Lennox, and Wiseburn.

At Lloyde Continuation High school, CVUHSD has a large group of students completing their high school diplomas or GEDs. This is another example of Centinela Valley Union High School District’s commitment to providing alternative learning environments for students to succeed.

Team 207 competes annually both locally and nationally in the FIRST Robotics Competitions (FIRST Robotics is a division of the FIRST Lego League and creates different challenges each year for teams to tackle). Team 207 has mentor engineers from Disney, Northrop-Grumman, El Camino College, and several other local agencies.

The team has gained recognition for their style, technical skills, and professionalism. Students will quickly learn that the math and physics content are both fun and rewarding when done while building their robot with their robotics teammates.

creDit recOVery PrOGraM – e2020In February (second semester 2009-10), CVUHSD implemented a district-wide credit recovery program called e2020. At-risk seniors lacking enough credits to graduate were offered the unique opportunity to participate in this special program. Parents and students are required to attend an information meeting and sign a contract which includes acceptable credit progress, student effort, behavior expectations, technology use, and attendance.

The program is offered at each comprehensive high school. Students meet with their e2020 teacher for one 3-hour block. Students work at their own pace with the guidance of a specially-trained teacher who keeps track of their progress in individualized, online courses, interacts with students on lessons and assessment, provides one-on-one or small group instruction.

“I am the first person in my family to go on to college. My mother immigrated to the United States from Columbia in the 70’s. She never got an education, but always supported me and my sisters with whatever we needed. I believe that every single student has the capability of accomplishing a goal like I have and should put forth their best effort while in high school.”

Leslie Montes a Leuzinger “Olympian”, on her way to Harvard University“I’m pretty excited about going to Harvard. I wouldn’t have gotten this far without all the help I got along the way. I’d like to thank my teachers for challenging me to do better, my counselors for answering my million questions, and my friends for believing in me and making the high school experience worthwhile. I guess it just goes to show that hard work and good karma does pay off. I advise the younger students to party hard, but work harder.”
