Successfully master the digital transformation The digital transformation for a tank farm covers all lifecycle phases – engineering, design, commissioning, operation, maintenance and services. The prerequisite for successful implementation is vertical integration. That means integrated communication that spans field level, production and control systems, as well as the management and planning systems. When all the data and plant components are also integrated horizontally along every step, the result is a transparent flow of value that includes suppliers, the overall logistics and customers.

Using our XHQ Operations Intelligence and cloud-based apps, a wealth of information from disparate systems is collected and analyzed. It’s then clearly presented as a Key Performance Indica-tor (KPI) in custom dashboards for intel-ligent decision-making and a reduction in critical situations. The offer is comple-mented by digital services, industrial se-curity and a secure network architecture.

Connection to the digital world on the webThrough cloud-based applications, it is possible to connect the infrastructure of a tank terminal via secure data channels with the Internet – and to use the large amount of data on products, plants, sys-tems and machines for extensive analy-sis and optimization. Data collection and evaluation can be performed by Siemens’ platform-based, open IoT operating sys-tem called MindSphere.

Digital data modelA common data model based on the COMOS Engineering and Plant Man-agement System is used to create and maintain the data in the Terminal Automation System (TAS), as well as for ongoing optimization during oper-ation and maintenance. The TAS, based on the SIMATIC PCS 7 process control system, communicates seam-lessly with the terminal management system (TMS) and the material and manufacturing operations manage-ment system (SIMATIC IT/MOM).

Our SIMIT software simulates the operating processes and allows virtual commissioning of the tank farm as well as early troubleshooting. In oper-ation and maintenance, the uniform database supports the updating of plant documentation, the execution of maintenance orders, the 3D display of the plant and much more.

Safety loops for motor managementThe fieldbus technology from Safety Integrated with PROFIsafe supports certified communication between controllers, safety-related I/O devices and process instruments. When the drives are combined with motor starters featuring the SIMOCODE safety motor management system or with SINAMICS frequency converters, a facility-wide safety loop can be implemented.

Valve checks during operationEmergency shutdown (ESD) valves used for safety instrumented functions (SIF) must work properly should a safety event occur. Our SIPART PS2 positioner features intelligent, fail-safe functions that provide comprehensive diagnostics data on valve performance. In addition, the Partial Stroke Test conducts periodic function and safety checks by partially moving the valve for a short time dur-ing operation. This feature extends the maintenance interval for a constant SIL level, saving time and costs while simul-taneously increasing asset availability.

Safety IntegratedOur solutions portfolio for comprehen-sive tank installation protection, better known as Safety Integrated, fulfills all relevant health, safety, environmental and industry standards as well as legal requirements. It offers safe, facility-wide operation and automation in combination with highly reliable pro-cess instrumentation, as well as 24/7 services for every phase of the lifecy-cle. Modular and flexible in design, Safety Integrated provides different levels of integration and implementa-tion to cover very specific requirements for performing standard control and safety functions. This also includes integrated functions implemented via interfaces, fault-tolerant controllers (up to SIL 3), safe fieldbus communi-cation such as PROFIBUS DP / PA, safety-related I/O modules and smart sensors such as the SITRANS P DS III pressure transmitter.

Safety and security are keySafety is of central importance for tank installations – and therefore a key lever for profitability. With this in mind, we created Safety Integrated, a unique process automation concept for the safe, efficient operation of all types of tank operations.

Easy configuration of safety applicationsThe likelihood of a safety-related event can be greatly reduced with the appro-priate risk analysis and safety technol-ogies, as well as by implementing a safety instrumented system (SIS). Our system comprises also a cause and effect engineering matrix. This SIMATIC Safety Matrix is ideally suited for pro-cesses in which defined events demand specific safety responses.

More transparency, more securityCommissioning, decentralized moni-toring and field device maintenance lead to considerable time and person-nel expenditure. More and more, on-site operation and service activities can be optimally executed via remote access and the use of modern, power-ful communication media. Part of our mobile operations concept is the SIPIX SD100 industrial tablet. In conjunction with the SIMATIC PCS 7 control system it delivers efficient and safe process control or condition-based mainte-nance. After explicit authentication, the plant equipment can be securely accessed.

With the tablet, also vehicle inspec- tion at the tank farm gate is possible, allowing entrance after appropriate identification. The SIPIX SD100 fea-tures an integrated RFID reader, ATEX approval for Zone 2 and 1, and easy battery replacement without using tools during operation – all of which are important prerequisites for use in tank terminals. The combination of platform-based common remote service (cRSP) with professional on-site services can further support field services and maintenance.

Secure digital infrastructureThe real-time radio positioning sys-tem SIMATIC RTLS (Real-Time Locating System) is a crucial component in the digital infrastructure of the modern plant. With this you will always know where for instance the trucks will be located. The objects to be monitored are equipped with a transponder and the determined data is made available in realtime to the higher-level systems. This makes all processes transparent and secure – from delivery and storage to departure.

Reliable cyber securityConnecting plants and systems via the Ethernet offers many benefits, but also leaves production processes vulnera-ble to cyber attacks. We offer a wide range of integrated digital solutions and services for first-rate IT network and system security. Our Defense-in-Depth approach combines security mechanisms with automation know-how to provide reliable, wide-ranging protection.

Digital supply chain management for transparent logisticsAt tank farms and terminals, the demands on supply chain management are rising, while global competition requires fast reactions. That means the seamless tracking of the material flow from raw material production to storage and transport up to the recipient is becoming increasingly important. We have the answer to these require-ments and offer solutions for the digitalization of logistics and flexible supply chain management.

Track and control material flow with AX4AX4 is a cloud-based IT solution that provides detailed cross-company track-ing and control of material flow involv-ing all participants – such as producer, supplier, carrier and shipowner. The logistics system ensures optimal utili-zation and communication with the personnel, scales, identification sys-tems and loading equipment.

It also ensures consistent control and monitoring of on-site transports. For the various participants and their systems along the supply chain, AX4 offers different integration options – EDI, web service, web, mobile app, e-mail link – and ensures 100% coverage of the logistics network.

We care about the ideal transport management: inbound and outbound, including track & trace, automated supply chain event management (SCEM), plus supply chain visibility. If the data is networked via a cloud application, such as MindSphere, the individual processes merge smoothly, resulting in a reduction of processing and throughput times.

Management of large logistics centersA large number of activities must be precisely coordinated and managed at the depots of large logistics centers: the arrival of planned and unexpected transports, the allocation to the most suitable loading points, the manage-ment of the parking space, the compo-sition of truck trailers for outgoing trans-ports, and all processes in between. Our Dock & Yard Management (DYM) software ensures fast processing,

while enabling easy drag-and-drop generation and prioritization of service orders or the creation of reports and analysis for managing service levels. It facilitates better traffic flow and more security through the identifica-tion and control of individual vehicles.

Object identification and container management The RFID readers RF260R and RF310R with transponder cards support effi-cient, intelligent and transparent object and container management with a cloud-based approach. The RF600 system automatically adjusts the transmit power and intelligently filters the read results. This leads to high process reliability, even in radio-sensitive applications to protect against unauthorized data access.

Protecting assets with access controlSecurity management is an increasing-ly complex issue at many tank facili-ties. To accurately define the appropri-ate security level and provide the best possible solution, we first conduct a comprehensive risk analysis. This information is then used to create an intelligent system of networked processes and technologies aimed at simplifying even the most complex surveillance tasks.

Siveillance SiteIQ lets you define secu-rity zones and virtual barriers. It com-bines video input from pan/tilt/zoom cameras with other sensory data to display the exact location of incidents on a screen or even a customized 2D or 3D site map. Automatic tracking of objects allows quick decision making and incident prevention resulting in a safer environment.

Fire safety with clever detectionOptimal fire protection is doubly im-portant in tank areas, where the pro-tection of personnel, assets and the environment is always a critical issue. Our fire detection systems combine technologies with products, networks and in-depth services offering a high level of safety.

Wide-area surveillance and protectionTank storage facilities are high-security installations that must fulfill specifi- cally defined protection requirements, particularly with respect to perimeter surveillance and protection. We have developed various approaches and technologies for detecting and track-ing unauthorized movement of peo-ple, machinery and vehicles, as well as for alerting emergency services, including microwave sensors, laser scanners, infrared sensors and fiber optical sensor cables.
