NEWS FROM OUR LINK MISSIONARIES

But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall

mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall

walk and not faint. Isaiah 30:41

Our time of waiting has almost come to an end. We have a flight booked

for Sunday 3rd October which should get us to Kathmandu by 3pm on

Monday 4th October. After what at times has felt like an exile for 18

months, we are busy preparing to return to Nepal! We have been told our

working visa has started to be processed, an answer to prayer.

It seems that the whole world has been on hold for more than a year and

only now is struggling to get moving again. Maybe you have also found the

passed year difficult, with isolation, the hospitalisation or even death of a

loved one. We pray that you will also be finding a new way to return to a

‘normal’, if that is possible. For ourselves the return to Nepal will be

welcome, though we envisage that working from home will be a ‘normal’

and face to face encounters only a slowly growing experience. Working in

the same time-zone will be the initial benefit and, as we are able, to open

up our home again and make it a place of welcome and prayer.

We are ever grateful for your support and prayers.

God’s peace,

Andrew & Andrea

BRIC A BRAC STALL

Thank you to everyone who donated items for the Bric-a-brac stall, held

last week which raised £200 for church funds.

Thanks also go to Marjorie, Patricia, Pat, Sandy and Karen who gave their

time and selling talents manning the stall, and to Pam for organising the

event.

ALL SOULS’ DAY - REMEMBERING LOVED ONES

VERY IMPORTANT: Please remember to sign the list in reception (or email) if you would like a loved one’s name read out at the service.

A mass will be celebrated for All Souls’ Day on Tuesday November 2nd at 7.00pm. At this service, the name(s) of departed loved ones will be read out and the opportunity to light candles in memory of a loved one included. We would like, if possible, to ensure that any names read out during the service will have someone present in the congregation who has especially come to hear their loved one remembered by name. It may also be that a member of St Giles or St Mary’s who is no longer able to come to church due to infirmity would like us to pray for a loved one and it would be very appropriate for a friend to still add these names to the list on their behalf.

Please add your loved one’s name(s) to the list (in reception) if you would like their name read out at the All Souls’ Day Mass or email the parish office at [email protected] Alternatively, you may also ring the office on 01977 790448.

A MEMORIAL SERVICE

for the life of

DONALD RICHARD CHESSMAN

will be held on Sunday, 17th October at 4.00pm.

All are most welcome to attend this event.

JUDITH LAWRANCE—RIP

Following the very unexpected death of Judith some

weeks ago, we ask you to hold Hugh and the family in

your thoughts and prayer in these coming days and

weeks. May Judith Rest in Peace.

Judith’s funeral will take place in St Giles on Monday,

11October at 2.45pm. The family ask you to join them

for refreshments in the Café following the service.

5

Mothers’ Union

We meet again in church on Monday, 4th October at 1.30pm. Our guest speaker will be Karen, one of our bell ringers. Karen will give a talk on “the History of Bells”.

We hope you can all make it—everyone is welcome and refreshments will be provided after the talk.

PLASTIC BOTTLE BOTTOMS APPEAL

Pontefract Civic Society are looking to mark

Remembrance Day with displays using the bottoms of

plastic drinks bottles.

Can you help by saving your bottle bottoms, any size of

bottom is required. If you can paint them red (acrylic

paint is best), and add 2 small holes in the middle, this

would be a big help. If you can’t

paint them, please put them in

the box in Reception and they

will get painted.

St Giles is supporting this venture and acting as a

collection point. Each display needs 2,500 bottle

bottoms, hence asking you to save them now! We

will be collecting them until the end of October.

THE PARISH MAGAZINE

If you would like to contribute to the November magazine, please send

your article to both Bruce Dalgleish, Editor ([email protected])

and Vivienne Smales ([email protected]) just in case

either is on holiday. The deadline for receipt of articles this month is

Sunday, 24th October 2021.

Also, if you would like to submit photos or details about any upcoming

events that you would like posted on social media, send to:

[email protected]

COP26

COP26 is an international summit for world leaders on Climate Change being held in the first week of November in Glasgow. The meetings planned for COP26 have been billed as some of the most important political events in a generation as scientists and politicians come together to debate and decide on the measures which are felt to have the most potential in managing Climate Change.

Faith-based aid organisations such as CAFOD and Christian Aid have long campaigned for Climate Justice as the effects of Climate Change have the greatest impact on the World’s Poorest Poor. Our Church of England is playing its part too. It is hoped that thousands of boats bearing prayers and messages will come together from across the country to form a special installation to deliver the Christian message to World Leaders on the need for climate justice.

If you would like to join us and take part, please follow the instructions on how to make an easy origami sailboat or via the Christian Aid website at caid.org.uk/rise and post your boat with its prayer or message to PO Box100, London SE1 7RT to arrive by 15th October. Alternatively, bring your boat to St Giles’ Reception by Wednesday morning 13th October and we will post on your behalf.

Paul and Ann Harris.

ST. GILES’ WHIST DRIVE WILL RECOMMENCE

7.00pm from Thursday 7th October

and fortnightly thereafter in the Café (subject to availability)

Why not come along and join us for a fun and friendly social evening, with a few hands of ‘non-serious’ whist. Card playing experience not essential.

Entry fee is £5 including a glass of wine/soft drink and cakes, plus a raffle.
