Summertime Happenings On Sunday, June 21 we will officially welcome the summer season. We have so much to look forward to this summer at St. Andrew. First of all remember Sunday school for all ages will continue throughout the entire summer. For the children, each month will have a special theme, and there will be lots of surprises and great experiences for all.

Trinity UMC Youth Group On Friday, June 5th we will welcome the youth group from the Trinity UMC (Rome, GA). Wil Tucker is coordinating the event. They will be putting on a musical Friday evening, and then staying overnight at the church. Please save the date. It’s a wonderful testimony that they share.

VBS We will be hosting a very special edition of Vacation Bible School beginning on Monday, June 22nd. Did you know that plans have been underway for several months? I think the decorations set the tone for the VBS, and St. Andrew always excels in this area. This contributes to the creative learning environment along with the dynamic media and music elements. It will all come together in such a way that the children will experience God’s love in a special way. May God richly bless our 2015 VBS ministry. By the way it’s not too late to join the VBS ministry team. Contact Debbie Caudill to find out what opportunities are still open.

Red Bird Mission Team On Sunday, July 19th we will be holding a special

blessing of the mission team during our services. We have 15 people who will be traveling to the Red Bird Mission to serve throughout the week. Save the date for both the 19th when you can participate in the blessing of the team, as well as Sunday, July 26th, when the team shares during the services stories from their

experiences.

Water Day On Sunday, July 19th the Sunday school will participate in the annual “Water Day.” It’s the one day of the year when the children and youth (and adult helpers) can wear their swimsuits to church.

Blessing of the Backpacks In August, on Sunday the 23rd, plan on joining with the children and youth as we hold our Blessing of the Backpacks. It’s a special day when we bless backpacks and the students for the upcoming school year.

Church Picnic & Outdoor Worship On Sunday, August 30th we will close out the summer season with our combined outdoor worship service, and church-wide picnic.

I don’t mean for this to be a complete listing of all the opportunities, just a highlight of things to come. I hope and pray that you and your families have a safe and blessed summer. The youth of Trinity United Methodist Church in Rome,

GA (trinityumcrome.org) would like to invite you to our Youth Choir perform-ance, with songs selected

and skits written by our stu-dents. The format and flavor

of our performance is cer-tainly unique: popular secu-

lar music is performed by our talented youth choir and band, and skits punctuate the music with funny and timely

perspectives on the difficulty of Christian life in modern world. The title of our performance this year is “The Reason” and will focus on the reason for our faith, our activities di-rected in service, and ultimately, our reason for being. Our musical selections include pieces by: Among Savages, Bas-tille, Florence and the Machine, Gavin DeGraw, Linkin Park,

Matchbox 20, Hoobastank, and Jimmy Needham. Friday, June 5, at 7:00 pm at St. Andrew UMC

We hope to see you there! (A free will offering will be collected to help with the costs

of the production.)

We will be serving the youth and their chaperones dinner Friday night at 6:00. There is a signup sheet in the Atrium, or call the office if you can provide a side dish or dessert for the group. There will be about 50 people coming in.

The need for food at the

Wesley Center is greatest at

the end of the month when

food stamps and other resources run out. Our

monthly collections are typically delivered mid-

month before the end of the month increase in the

need for food. The red wagon will be placed in

the Atrium on Sunday, 6/7, as a reminder of our

food collection on Sunday, 6/14, and again on

Sunday, 7/5, as a reminder of our food collection

on Sunday, 7/12. Spare what food you can these

two months as they are usually hard months for

the Wesley Center to fill its food pantry.

G-Force Adventure Park Vacation Bible School

VBS is June 22-25. Registration has started and forms can be found in the atrium or online through our website, standrewumchurch.net. There are many opportunities to serve. Please consider being a part of this wonderful ministry.

Summer Sunday School

Adventures!

God’s Word is alive and well and ever-so-exciting. All preschool and elementary aged

children are invited to experience the Bi-ble in a series of summer adventures de-signed specifically for St. Andrew UMC. Bringing friends and relatives will add exponentially to the fun and excitement! During the month of June, the children will explore Camp Care-A-Lot. We will practice the art of caring for God’s crea-tion, our resources, ourselves and others through planting flowers in the Giving Garden, cooking and sharing in the Care-A-Lot Café, participating in a mini-Olympics, and mission activities. July is a celebratory month. We will learn of young people in the Bible encouraged to use and celebrate their gifts. We will celebrate David’s musical abilities (and learn to play and sing, too!) with It’s All About That Praise! , Jeremiah’s gifts of speaking with Dramatic Divas and Dash-ing Dons, and Timothy’s talents as we get our passports stamped following Timo-thy’s route of travel. Our annual Water Day is also in July. In August, the children and teachers be-come Bible Detectives. With a casebook and decoder, we will solve mysteries. There will be some surprise faith build-ers, too. Think Legos. Adults need not feel left out! There are

our regular teachers are on summer

STARS will hold their annual picnic at the DOMINICK LOFINO PARK, 640 GRANGE HALL ROAD, Beavercreek, on Wednesday, June 17, 2015, at 11:30 a.m. Art and Ken will again be our grilling chefs. A fun time for sharing and maybe even a cornhole game under the covered pavilion. Please bring a dish to share and a $2 donation for covering expenses. PLEASE sign up on the board or contact Carolyn Ach so we can plan accordingly. Also, a Reds baseball game is planned for WEDNESDAY, JULY 22, 12:35 p.m. with Chi-cago Cubs. Ken Hutton will arrange for tickets and total cost with parking and transportation would be approximately $28 per person. More details to come.

Heaven, How I Got Here The Story of the Thief on the Cross

Heaven, How I Got Here is the story of the thief who died on the cross next to Jesus. It was inspired by the

story found in Luke, chapter 23. Pastor Colin Smith explains his attempt at seeing the day Jesus was crucified as the last day of the thief’s life on earth from the perspective of his new life in heaven. The story weaves together what we know from the Bible about the events of the day with what the thief observes as he goes through the same agonizing torture that Jesus endured. As the thief moves through various emotions, he finally realizes that in spite of the wrongs he committed in his earthly life, by put-ting his trust in Jesus, his life could be trans-formed for all eternity. If Jesus could save the thief who clearly led a life of sin, there is hope in Jesus, even for those far from God. The mes-sage is that Jesus is our Lord and Savior. He lays claim to our life on earth and opens heaven for all who come to Him in faith and re-pentance.

STaRS St. Andrew Retirees

Once again our Me-morial Garden is looking fresh and serene with plenty of shade to enjoy in the warm weather. Thank you so much to all who weeded

and mulched, keeping our grounds so beautiful. We do have the new memorial bricks that were ordered last fall and we want to place them soon. If you’ve walked out to the gar-den you’ve no doubt noticed that several bricks have been heaved up by invading tree roots. The trustees will first provide the maintenance necessary, then the bricks can be placed. Please watch your step on the uneven bricks for now.

Memorial Garden

What is a Living Will? A living will is a legal document that a per-son uses to make known his or her

wishes regarding life prolonging medical treatments. It can also be referred to as an advance directive, health care directive, or a physician's directive. A living will should not be confused with a living trust which is a mechanism for holding and distributing a person's assets to avoid probate. It is impor-tant to have a living will as it informs your health care providers and your family about your desires for medical treatment in the event that you become incapacitated or are not able to speak for yourself. The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world and those that live in it. Psalm 24:1 June and July will bring plenty of sunshine and many opportunities to reach out to oth-ers. As the plants in the Giving Garden grow, we will need a steady schedule of volunteers to water and weed. By July, we will begin har-vesting, packaging, and delivering our pro-duce to the food pantry at St. Paul UMC and for the Farmer’s Market days at the Wesley Community Center. Check the Giving Garden Calendar located in the hallway across from the nursery for open dates to sign-up for all the tasks listed below. Here are some ways that you can serve:

FAMILY VIOLENCE PREVENTION CENTER (FVPC)

MISSION OF ST. ANDREW UMW’S NAOMI CIRCLE

With United Methodist Women’s goal of enriching the lives of women and children, Naomi Circle is among the many organizations supporting the needs of FVPC of Greene County, Ohio. Located at 380 Bellbrook Ave., Xenia, the center houses, counsels, and meets the needs of adults and children in danger of or experiencing domestic violence. Their mission is “to reduce family and relationship violence and its impact in Greene County through prevention, intervention, safe-housing and collaborative community programs.” They operate a 24-hour domestic crisis telephone hotline, counsel both adult and child victims of domestic violence, shelter victims of abuse, provide violence prevention programs in Greene County public junior and senior high schools, partner with law enforcement to offer immediate response to domestic violence/dispute incidents through their award-winning DIVERT program. We are proud of their efforts to promote violence free futures. At each monthly Naomi circle meeting, members generously donate items on the center’s wish list as well as cash for the purchase of gift cards. FVPC’s wish list includes but is not limited to household cleaning supplies, paper products, health & hygiene products, food, batteries, white towels and twin bed sheet sets. Our goal is to deliver a healthy supply of needed goods every few months. Domestic violence is not just a women's issue. It is an issue of faith. United Method-

ist Women and United Methodist Men have partnered to launch a domestic violence

initiative to raise awareness and provide training in United Methodist congrega-

Peace with Justice Sunday is May 31

In Jesus’ inaugural address, standing in his home synagogue in Naz-areth, he detailed his game plan. “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He

has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” (Luke 4:18-19) Through your giving, good news is pro-claimed to—and experienced by—the poor. Investing in the Wesley Center Neighborhood For some time the Wesley Community Center has offered baby showers twice a year for expectant mothers in the surrounding neighborhoods. The concept arose from the observation that many young women in similar circumstances have not learned how to take care of themselves during pregnancy and then nur-ture a child through infancy and early childhood. The result is that many of the children grow up disadvantaged, which affects them the rest of their lives, and the cycle of poverty continues. Through the Wesley-St. Andrew Fellowship, we have been asked and have agreed to assist in a shower on Saturday, October 10, at the center. Along with several other churches we will provide laundry baskets containing ba-sic specific needs for baby care, as well as food for refreshments, decorations, and games to play. This is a party...and more. Approximately 20 women who will have been interviewed and ac-cepted the challenge of learning child-raising skills and and also moving toward employ-ment, will take part in the fun and hear a speaker from a place such as Children's Medical Center. Then they will be mentored in a variety of ways in the months to come. Our Outreach Team has made this event their emphasis for the month of September.
