All materials are supplied, and activities include painting, drawing, cutting and pasting. Projects are geared towards

families with children between 3 and 8, but all ages are welcome. Participation is free and registration is not necessary. Donations are always accepted!

Our community outreach arts education program is open to all students in the surrounding area and seeks to bring together boys and girls interested in exploring all forms of visual art. Individual work, community projects, cultural experiences and movie nights will be part of the Art Flow experience. Visiting professional artists will engage and teach in ways that allow the students’ self-expression to emerge.

Come experience where art meets science! Explosions, eruptions, and a variety of scientific concepts will all be explored in this summer camp. We will learn about chromatography, chemical reactions by making salt watercolor paintings and fizzy color blasts. We will also make art to learn about acid base Indicators and create prints with basic kitchen ingredients while studying surface tension. Science experiments with beautiful results are the foundation of this camp. Please bring a sack lunch and remember that WSS and PrintLab have a “No Nut” policy in our classrooms.

This is an introductory “tour” of lampwork beadmaking. Learn to make lampworked glass beads using the old Venetian technique of layering molten glass on a rod. There will be a brief discussion on safety, tools and technique followed by a demonstration. Student will then have time to explore their own creativity manipulating the glass to create a one of a kind handmade glass beads with the guidance of the instructor. Each student will be supplied with a special Nortel Minor glass working torch, safety glasses, various colors of Moretti soft Italian glass and all the tools needed. Please bring note taking supplies.

Adult Classes

Want to explore the world of art on your summer vacation? Swing by WSS for an all-out art attack! We will create a variety of projects each day ranging from painting, drawing, printmaking, clay, to mixed media. We will take a tour of the facility and gallery and learn the history of WSS. Lessons will be drawn from the current gallery show and students will develop art appreciation skills. Visiting guest artists will enhance the understating of materials students will be using to create new projects. Don’t forget to bring a sack lunch each day! This camp will be facilitated by a WSS staff but a variety of artist educators will teaching as well. Each session is unique so the camp can be taken multiple times.

In addition to being an amazing artist Da Vinci was an architect, musician, mathematician, engineer and INVENTOR. We will learn about Da Vinci and create some expert technical drawings and then work to turn those ideas into three dimensional pieces using a variety of materials including found objects, metal, cardboard, wood, and more.

For painters of all levels, skills and disciplines, the focus of this class is to nurture the individual creative process. Color mixing and basic oil painting techniques will be covered. Participants will explore traditional and alternative styles in oil painting while developing an understanding of basic drawing and composition skills. Emphasis is placed on discovering individual strengths and styles that will enable each student to complete a final painting reflecting those characteristics. For anyone who wishes to brush up on basic oil painting techniques, we will focus on producing “mini-works” that demonstrate different techniques. These may include glazing, impasto, dry brush, and simple blending and shading techniques. We will work from a single object or shape to easily visualize the different effects that can be achieved simply by changing the application. Color mixing and brush use will also be covered. Learn to use one of the most versatile paint mediums available. This class will focus on painting techniques and how they serve to accomplish different results. Acrylics can function as watercolors as well as mimic the deep effects of oil paints. They can also be combined with other media to create richly abstract or textured images. Working from “thin to thick,” we’ll collaboratively produce four distinct works in four sessions of 2.5 hours each. We’ll also discuss your individual painting objectives. We’ll learn how to create both realistic and abstract work depending on your objectives. Supply list available online.

ages 12+

Linocut is a variant of woodcut in which the relief printing matrix is made of softer linoleum. A design is drawn onto the surface which is then cut with gouges, vtools and chisels. The uncarved areas yield a mirrored image when printed. Students will learn to create imagery on linoleum, pink erasers, and flat rubber discs which will be used to experiment in print collage. Required: Speedball Lino Cutter Set.

What do tin foil, feathers, tape, cardboard and string all have in common? They can be used to create a texturally and tonally rich edition of prints. Using these found materials, students will create mindblowing collagraphs and learn to print them using both relief and intaglio methods.

Harness the power of acid to create your next art work! To start, a zinc plate in an acid-resist ground. A scribe is used to remove the ground, exposing bare metal. Etch acid eats the exposed zinc which creates grooves that hold ink. Students will learn the intaglio method of printing their unique etched plate onto paper. Required: Steel Etching Scribe

Capture the music and atmosphere of your favorite band, an imaginary band or your own band with your very own gig poster. This class will focus on the reductive screen printing process to create colorful posters. In this six (6) segment class, you will learn to make lampworked glass beads using the old Venetian technique of layering molten glass on a rod. We will learn the basic skills used to manipulate glass and concentrate on cultivating a mastery of those skills. Students will learn basic bead shapes, layering of glass, dots, basic flower designs, frit (the use and making of), stringer pulling and how to make and pull twisty canes. It is recommended that students attend the Intro to Glass Beadmaking class but it is not a requirement. Each student have access to a Nortel Minor glass working torch, safety glasses and all the tools needed for use in shaping glass. Various colors of Moretti soft Italian glass will be available for purchase. Please bring note taking supplies. And additional materials fee of $30 will be required.

Explore jewelry making using basic metalsmithing techniques to design and create unique handcrafted jewelry. This course covers sawing, piercing, sanding, stamping, texturing and forming as well as finishing. Students can create at least one piece of copper or sterling silver jewelry weekly. Projects may include earrings, pendants, bracelets or rings. Metal to complete at least four projects is included in the class fee. Students have access to studio tools and equipment. No experience necessary. Repeat the class to master skills. Cost includes $25 for supplies.

Metalsmithing for Jewelry Fabrication ages 16+

This four-week course will build upon the metalsmithing techniques learned in the first metalsmithing class. During this 2 week class students will learn the basics of working with resin. Using metal forms we will use resin to add color or suspend objects for highly personalized pieces. Clear resin can be mixed with pigments or be poured clear over a photo, image or decorative paper. Items like glitter, beads and miniature charms can be suspended in the resin. The possibilities are endless. Students will create 3 unique pendants. Pieces created on the second day may need to cure and be picked up at a later time. Class cost includes metal bases for three pendants, resin, some suspendables, instruction and use of tools during class time. Students must bring their own dust mask. Additional supplies may be purchased prior to class or purchased from instructor during the class. **We will be using low odor resins. Supply fee of $15 included.

Design and create your unique 12 x 12 inch mosaic with ceramic tile, stained glass, mirror, and Venetian glass. In this plein air workshop, you’ll start in the studio with basic principles, and then you’ll move to the field where Michael will demonstrate his method for “capturing the moment” quickly and efficiently but without sacrificing mood and magic. Afterward, you’ll have the opportunity to practice your new skill with Michael going from easel to easel offering plenty of personal help. Each day will offer at least one demonstration plus critiques of student work done in the workshop.
