ESHER (A. S. ..-Escheath, i. e. Ash-haugh) is a. parish and pretty village, situat-Od on a hill, on t.be Portsmouth road, near the river )fole, with a. station l mile north-ea.st, in the parish of Thames Ditton, on tho London and South "eslern railway, nnd is -l miles south-west from Kin~ston­on-Tharues, 2 south.,~est from 'I'hames Ditton and 14 by rail irom London, in the Mid division of the county, Elm· bridge hundred, Kingston petty session8'1 division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Emly, archdeaconry of Surrey, and diocese of \Yincbestcr. Tho village is lighted 'With gas bv the Kingston Gas Company, and suppliod with water by 'the Lambeth iVtLterworks Company. under a scheme of the Kingston Rural Sanitary Authority in 1888-9 a system of main drainage was laid through this parish, Thames Ditton & Loog Ditton at o. cost of £70,000, including a sewage farm and 20 acres of land at Lower Green.

The parish is governed by an Urban District Cooncil of 21 members formed in • .\pril, 1805, under the provisions of the "Local Government Act, 1894" (56 & 5i Viet. c. 73); bv Local Governmeo~ Board Order ~o. 32,638, the district, known as '' Esher and the Ditton.a," comprises Esher, Thnmes Ditton and part of Long Ditton, and 1a divided into four wards. · · · ·.

Christ Church, which occupies a fine site on a.n eminence, was erect.ed in 1853-4, at a cost of £7,200, and is a cruciform building of stone, in the Early English style, including a tower, with a spire, containing a clock and 6 bells: the chancel windows are stained a.nd there is a marble monu­ment t-0 Leopold, Prince of Sue Coburg and lst King of the Belgians, who formerly resided at Claremont, and died 10 Dec. 1865: t.his rnonurneot, originally erected by H.)L Queen Victoria in St. George's Chapel, Windsor, Wll.8 sub. sequently removed to tb.ia church: here is also a. marble figure in tho nttit.ude of prayer, erected by Sir Francis Drake kt. in memory of his father, Richard Drake, Equerry to Queen Elizabeth, who died in 1603; tho effigy was removed from t-he old church by Sir William Richord ~Drake kt. The old church of St. George, formerly called "Sandy cMpel," is still st.a.ndiog, and contains a monument by .Flaxman to the Hon. Mrs. Ellis of Claremont, d. 1803: the altar piece, representing " Our Saviour,'' was painted by Sir Robert Ker Porter x.c.n.: this church is now disused, escept when burials take place in the churchyard: in the new church'l'llrd is an altar tomb of marble with an elabo­rately carved flat canopy, beneath which are placed recumbent marble fignre!l, life size, of the Right Hon. Viscount Esber, .}fast.er of the Rolls (d. 1899), and Lady Esher, ru:id on the side of the tomb is a military trophy and inscription to his son, the Hon. Eugene Leopold Selwyn Brett, lieut. Scots Guards, d. 8 Dec. 188'2. Here also is a. fine canopied tomb to a lady, with seated effigy in marble. The register dates from the yen.r 168'2. The living is a rectory, net yearly nlue £333, with ball an acre ·of glebt>, in the gift of Wndham College, Oxford, and held ~nee 1895 by the Rev. E >relyn Joseph Rone l\J.A. la.re of that college. The iron mission church at West End is licensed for divine service. The Society of Friends ha\·e a meeting house in Cla.rcmont mne, holding SO persons. There is al.so a. Lancelo~ ("Capability") Brown.
