Students Start-up Support System (S4)
Report on 3rd Faculty Development Program – Design Engineering and Innovation
Date: 28th – 30th October 2014
Venue: 126, GTU Student Start-up Support System Co-Creation Center (S4-C3), ACPC
Building, LDCE Complex, Ahmedabad-15.
Development of Design-Based And Project-Based Learning System at GTU: On 2nd February
2012 (The first cohort of 4-year degree engineering students graduated out in May 2012.),
GTU started the process of updating its syllabi. It was decided to develop a design-based
learning system. (In Chemical Engineering and in IT, one uses the term ‘Project-based
Learning’ for a similar idea.) So design orientation has been embedded into the new syllabi
from July 2013 and open-ended problems were included in the practical work. A strong 6-
semester spine of design engineering has been included in the syllabi. On 9th January 2014,
experts in design engineering from all over the country were invited to present their views
on how Universities could permeate design engineering into the whole of the engineering
syllabi. At GTU, the processes of designing the project at the Final year and of the spine of
Design Engineering, from third to eighth semester of degree engineering programs, have
been synchronized in the interest of seamless progression of learning.
This Report is of the 3rd FDP for Design Engineering – 1. 91 Faculty Members have actively
participated in the same. The first workshop was organized on 2 August 2014. Till now 404
Faculty Members have participated in the FDPs for Design Engineering – 1.

Feedback from Faculty members:
This FDP event was very useful as we learnt many new concepts and it provided a
new outlook for us faculty members who teach design engineering.
PROF. RUCHEE SHARMA – KJIT, SAVLI
This was a completely new experience and the way, in which the mentors explained
to us the entire process; it was very informative yet very interactive. It made us
understand why discipline-wise guidance of technical personnel is required.
PROF. DINESH PATEL – SVMIT, Bharuch
We figured out that team understanding is the best way of learning. Sessions were
inspiring and very interesting. The vision discussed by Honourable VC sir was an eye-
opener.
PROF. ZHANKHNA DAVE- Amiraj College
The workshop was phenomenal. It was very informative and we learnt a lot under
the expert guidance of the mentors.
PROF. RAJNIKANT RATHOD - GMFE, Himmatnagar
Students will completely enjoy the canvas filling phase and it will help them ideate in
a much better manner. Never would have thought that design engineering will turn-
out to be so much interactive. We are waiting for the next workshop.
PROF. HIRAK SHAH - GMFE, Himmatnagar
Design engineering turns out to be the synonym for Interactive learning.
PROF. KUMKUM CHAUHAN – SCET, Rajpur, Kadi
Understood the Empathy Mapping canvas and learnt a lot about design engineering.
PROF. SHREYA PATEL – GMFE, Himmatnagar

Very good initiative by Gujarat Technological University. It will take the project
activity to a higher level.
PROF. SUNIL. A. BAKHRU – BVM, V.V.Nagar
Design engineering, Creativity at its best.
PROF. DHANUSH PATEL - VIMAT,KIM
Very excited from the first day itself. Design engineering is completely opposite of
what we had thought. Innovation through Ideation is what we learnt today.
PROF. JAYESH PATEL – GITS, Moyad
Innovation oriented thinking initiative. Innovative design skill. Good brainstorming
activities, team work, idea exchange task, overall great experience.
PROF. BHUPENDRA S. PATIL - SRICT,Ankleshwar
According to our view, fantastic efforts are undertaken by GTU to uplift the level of
3rd semester students of engineering via Design Engineering subject. Actually,
theoretical concepts are explained in class room teaching, this novel idea will
eventually and certainly help students as well as faculty members to bridge a gap
between theoretical and practical things. Excellent exercise and efforts made by GTU
for students and faculty members.

Day 1: 28th October 2014
On the very first day, after registration, the first session on Design Engineering was started.
In this session, introduction of design thinking methodology were given by the mentor, Yash
Saxena. With different examples, he explained how so many innovations have been carried
out in the world by following the design-thinking process. After explaining the methodology
in detail, he started explaining the first Canvas: Empathy map. Empathy Map is the canvas
where designer has to observe and understand the emotional needs of the user, and on the
basis of empathy of user he will think of the solution. (Reference: page 5 of
http://files.gtu.ac.in/circulars/14Oct/01102014.pdf)
Then, every team started filling their first canvas, enthusiastically using the printed canvas,
colourful sticky notes and sketch pens. Every faculty visualized himself as a student and
started learning the new approach of Design Engineering. Yash Saxena and Professors from
some GTU Colleges mentored the teams personally and guided them for filling their
canvases well. Simultaneously one member from each team was narrating the whole story
of the team’s journey in the form of case study.
During the break between the morning and the afternoon sessions, the Faculty Members
got energized through networking with other teams. Then they were back to their work and
completed their first canvas of Empathy Map.

Day 2 : 29th October 2014
On the 2nd day, a discussion about the experience of the first day was initiated and queries
of the Faculty Members were solved by the mentors. After that the second Canvas: Ideation
was explained by the mentor, Rohit Radhakrishanan with the help of a presentation. He
explained how things can be connected to get a better idea. He said that most of the times,
basically innovation is nothing but the combination of existing ideas. (Reference: page 21 of
http://www.gtu.ac.in/circulars/14Oct/Learning-Design_thinking-Manual%20v11.0.pdf )
Then, faculty members started working on their second canvas. During this canvas, they
were required to put the user, user activities and different props. For filling up the canvas,
one had to think about the activities which would change according to the
situation/context/location. Till the completion of this canvas the participants could not
figure out the exact problem. As soon as they completed the Ideation canvas, the ideas of
many problems emerged. They were amazed by their randomness because they had never
thought of such sort of problems before in the domain, they had selected. The beauty of a
systematic study of Design is that it breaks all old customs and barriers of identifying and
solving problems.

Participants are busy with their canvas making activity during workshop
Day 3 : 30th October 2014
The last day of the workshop started with more excitement because all the participants had
come up with the problem statement and they were asked to solve that problem using the
third Canvas: Product Development. (Reference: page 22 of
http://www.gtu.ac.in/circulars/14Oct/Learning-Design_thinking-Manual%20v11.0.pdf ) On
this canvas, the participants were to fill the purpose of their product and the experience of
user when he uses their solution. Along with these things, product function, feature and
components of the products need to be filled in appropriate places on the canvas.
Thereafter one team acted as the customer of the other team’s product and discussed the
functions and features of the product for customer revalidation. Teams then redesigned
their products several times until their customer-team was satisfied. These steps were
repeated again and again with other teams as customers and redesign was done whenever
required so that a better design emerged.

In the afternoon session, the Faculty Members had a discussion with Hon’ble Vice
Chancellor, GTU for the evaluation policy and examination format for Design Engineering -1
at third semester.
The last day ended with a video shoot for their project documentation for all the teams.
These will work as the reference material. The Faculty Members left with their participation
certificate and with promise of organizing the same kind of workshops at their college for
other faculties and students.
