10th September 2015 - Week 8 Term 3
Student Advisory Board Our Project Janszoon Student Advisory Board members Chris, Alex and Jessie travelled to Kimi Ora at Kaiteriteri on Monday to meet up with the students from the two other schools Golden Bay High School and the Motueka High School. The team presented a slideshow of our trip to Wainui / Taupo Pt to show what we did on our trip and what we had learnt. As this was the first year on the Board they took part in discussions as to how it went and what could be improved. The team plan to talk to our yr 4/5 students about the role of the Student Advisory Board and if they are interested to apply to be on the Board to represent our school next year. It was a great experience being on the Advisory Board this year. I got to do things I’d never done before, like go to Adele Island to see the saddle backs and also go on a glass-bottom boat. I also got to meet lots of new people from DOC and Project Janszoon and also to work with the high school kids from GBHS and Motueka High. I learnt lots about the environment and I’m keen to apply to be a member of the High School Advisory Board. Jessie
Chess Champs Leo, Daisy, Kegan and Alex represented us at the Yr 5/6 Golden Bay Chess Champs yesterday with the four winning the champion team trophy and Kegan edged out Leo in the final to take out the individual championship. In the Yr 3/4 we had Archie, Lief, Noah and Jay competing in their first event. They all managed to win 3 games and we were proud of their effort.
I played Kruger in the semi final and it was a slow, tough game. I managed to win and played Leo in the fi-nal and that was another tough game. I felt awesome winning the individual championship. It was a great day winning the rugby and chess on the same day. Kegan
I was quite nervous at the start and thought I’d be really bad but it turned out better than I expected. Next year I’ll practice more and learn a few more moves. Lief
The games were hard against the other schools and I had to do a lot of thinking. I won three of my games. The hardest thing to remember was once you touched a piece you had to move it. This made me make a few bad moves. Archie
The games were tough but I really enjoyed it. I would like to play next year but I’ll practice more to get lots better. Jay
Tackle 7’s Victory Our Motupipi Tackle 7’s team won the final of the Golden Bay Schools tournament with a 40 -20 win over Takaka Primary yesterday. This victory earned them entry into the regional finals in Nelson on Tuesday 22nd September. The team were tenacious in attacking any ball on the ground and their passing was pretty slick. We had a great team of parent supporters encouraging the boys on The team was Alex (c) Chris, Riley O, Yoshi, Kegan, Tane, Xavier, Rhys, Caleb, and Leo
There was lots of pressure on in this game. The boys we played against are our team mates on Saturdays and I knew it would be tough. Riley O I was excited we won the tournament. The final was tough but we played well as a team and passed the ball around to players in space. Caleb The final was really fast. We had a good team and e played our best in the first half but played a bit loose in the second half and let them score a couple of tries. Tane
LYNNE AND MIKA Lynne McGuire from Kiwi Recovery dropped in on Friday to see her Grandson Kayden, who is in Room 3. While she was
here she took the opportunity to see a couple of classes and share with them some information about her job which involves
monitoring and tracking of kiwi. She also introduced the children to her dog Mika who is a trained kiwi dog.
On Friday a lady called Lynne came and told us about her job and Mika her dog . Lynne works for Kiwi Recovery and Mika is a kiwi
dog and she has been trained to find kiwis and track them down. Mika is learning to also track and find whio, which is our native blue
duck.
Lynne lives near the Heaphy Track and she gets goes on helicopters a lot to get to the pest traps
for stoats and rats..
Every day Lynn wakes and gets to work out in the bush. Sometimes she goes around schools to
talk about her job.
Wow! Lynne and Mika have a cool job.

“Shark Attract” Last Friday we took the “teachable moment” to travel to Ligar Bay to check out a large thresher shark (about 4 metres long) that had been washed up on the beach.
It was the first time most had seen a sizeable shark and it provoked a lot of questions and research back at school.
Thanks to Bickley Motors for quickly organizing a couple of buses and drivers at very short notice.
Room Two’s Shark Recounts The shark was fourteen foot long. Angus The thresher shark had big teeth but sharp. Ashton C The thresher shark had lots and lots of blood on it, it went reddish. Scarlett This thresher shark uses its tail to stun the fish. Kian The thresher shark’s teeth was very, very, sharp and was scary. Charlie I saw a shark. It was bleeding. Emmy The thresher shark was really purple and pink. Layla G I saw a green caterpillar thresher shark. It can see in the dark. Ryan I saw a thresher shark had very sharp teeth. Zinzan We went to Ligar Bay. We was a shark. It was dead and it was bleeding. Amber I went to Ligar Bay to see the shark with my brother and sister. Tilly The thresher shark has big eyes. Luke I saw a shark. It was cool. My Cullen told us what the shark does. Ashton S On Friday I saw a dead shark. Layla R I saw a shark at the beach. Emma I went to the beach to see the shark. Bunnie Last Friday 4th of September our principal Mr
Cullen paid for two buses so the whole Motupipi
school could go to see a dead thresher shark that
had washed up on the beach at Ligar Bay. It was
a full grown thresher shark and it was a fantastic
experience. Thanks Mr Cullen
Jack H, Room 1
ON FRIDAY THE 4TH SEPTEMBER A THRESHER SHARK WASHED UP ON LIGAR BAY BEACH. THE SHARK WAS ROUGHLY AROUND FOUR METRES LONG. IT HAD LARGE EYES AND A VERY LONG TAIL. ITS SKIN WAS SOFT AND A LIGHT BLUE. IT HAD SOME VERY SHARP TEETH. IT ALSO HAD AN EXTREMELY POINTY NOSE. I THOUGHT IT WAS QUITE BIG AND WAS VERY ROUND. IT HAD A LONG TAIL THAT IT USES TO HIT ITS PREY WITH AND HAD BIG FINS, SO IT MUST HAVE BEEN A GOOD SWIMMER. Tane, Room 1
On Friday the school went to Ligar Bay to see the thresher shark that was washed up on the beach. We jumped off the bus and ran to the dead body of the shark. The shark was over three meters long. Blood was streaming out of the sharks body into the salty sea. The sea wind whipped my hair everywhere. The thresher sharks long tail swayed in the wind. Slowly the dead body drifted out into the sea as the sea came in. Phoebe, Room 1
