Setting SNMP Community StringsSNMP community strings authenticate access to cable modem MIB objects and function as passwords to limitaccess. Before you can access a cable modem, the community string issued from StormWatch diagnosticsmust match those of the cable modem in the cable system.

1 From the Actions menu, choose Set community strings to display the Read and Read-Writechoices. The Read string is adequate for all tabs except the Configure tab.

The SNMP community strings may be pre-configured using a customized stormwatch.ini filelocated either on the CD-ROM or on a separate floppy disk. To be sure, look at the input box thatappears after selecting Read or Read-Write. If asterisks (*****) are in the box, the communitystrings are already set. Do not overwrite these or delete them or you will not be able to contactand query the cable modem. If this should occur, stop and restart StormWatch to restore the pre-configured community strings.

    2 Select Read or Read-Write .

The Read-Write access community string must be set correctly (matching the MSO) for settingsunder the Configure window to function properly.
