February 2013 FOREVER YOUNG
One of my favorite quotessince I was young has beenthe classic, “All you need is
love” as sung by Beatle the late JohnLennon.
In some shape or form, I thinkeveryone should be loved. It is adefining force in nature. It can be asessential as air, food or water.
There is no real definition of love.It is different for everyone.
When I was younger, my defini-tion of love was a knight in shiningarmor coming to save me and takeme away, like all the Disney moviesshow.
As I grew older, I looked at myparents who have been married for30 years.
There have been ups and downsin those years, sure, but I havewatched each time they patched upholes to keep the love intact.
There are also friends who stayedby me and watched me stumbleover heartbreak and gave me theirlove to help me back up.
Love is different for everyone andwe experience it in different ways.
This month, we celebrate love inall its different forms.
For those who are married or inrelationships, we hope you enjoy theideas and planning we’ve put intothis issue to help you with gifts andwhere to go on Valentine’s Day withyour special someone.
We’ve highlight-ed some of thebest localshops to pickup gifts orflowers andlocally owned
restau-
rants to share dinner .If you’re single, we’ve created a
Valentine’s Day tips sheet for youand ideas on how to spend the day, including going out with somefriends for dinner or a enjoying afancy day of pampering.
One of my favorite Valentine’sDays was spent with my mom.
My father, an airline pilot, wasgone for the day and instead of ussitting at home, we booked a reser-vation for two at a hibachi-style grilland had an amazing night.
We were able to have fun, evenwith the couples who surroundedus, and those who had the sameidea as we did.
The interactive setting of thehibachi made it easy for us to all feellike we were sharing the Valentine’sDay experience together.
Celebrate the month, and use it asan excuse to shower a little love onyourself and others.
We at Forever Young hope thatyour month is spent celebrating thelove around you.
As always, we welcome yourcomments and questions [email protected]

You really can’tdo this kind of
thing (campaign)without a good
family behindyou... Without an
understandingwife, when you’re
calling and canceling date
night, it wouldn’twork.”
-Chris Craft
It started at Fort Pierce Bowl. When Chris Craft attended the
Monday night mixer bowlingleague and met Patti Craft heknocked down pins and swept heroff her feet.
After 16 years of marriage and adaughter, Sydni, 14, they’re stillknocking down obstacles and stay-ing strong through life and cam-paigns.
Mr. Craft was elected the tax col-lector for Fort Pierce in November.Prior to that, he was a county com-missioner.
“You really can’t do this type ofthing without a good family behindyou,” Mr. Craft said. “You can be
pulled in so many directions andget calls at 6 p.m. saying that youhave to be somewhere. Without anunderstanding wife, when you’recalling and canceling date night, itwouldn’t work.”
For Mrs. Craft, the limelight ofthe campaigns isn’t her favoriteand she would rather play abehind-the-scenes role.
“We will watch Michelle Obamagive a speech and Patti will look atme and say, ‘Honey, don’t expectme to do that,’” Mr. Craft said. “Andthat’s OK. I knew this going in andwe still work.”
Despite having different person-alities and likes, the couple uses
the differences to enrich their lives.“We have a great amount of
things in common,” he said. “Weplay off those commonalities. Weteach each other and open our eyesto different things that we may nothave tried before.”
Apart from the campaigning andthe publicity, the couple saysthey’re down to earth and a normalfamily.
“Having the family aspect is veryimportant,” Mrs. Craft said. “Some-times we get away from it forawhile and then we come back andsit at the dinner table instead ofhaving it around the TV. Once thecampaign is over, you’re back to
normal. Your life is more hectic butthe days go on. We did a lot of run-ning around.”
The Craft’s enjoy watchingNASCAR, Miami Marlins andMiami Dolphins games together asa family.
They are planning a trip to Wash-ington, D.C., as a family to visit themonuments and sightsee.
Apart from vacations, Mrs. Craftsaid that among everyday life, it’simportant to take a timeout andhave date night and spend timetogether.
“You really need to have fun,”Mrs. Craft said. “Having fun is soimportant.”

The perfect Valentine’s Day gift canbe elusive, especially for last- minuteshoppers. What to get?
For women the usual gifts are flow-ers, chocolate or jewelry. For men, itcan be a little more difficult, but it usu-ally has to do with hardware and golf.
Flowers are for every occasion, andValentine’s Day is no exception.
At Chaney’s House of Flowers in FortPierce, it is one of the busiest times ofthe year. Owner Jill Powers said flowersare a visual message.
“Flowers let loved ones know howthey feel about each other,” Ms. Pow-ers said. “Red roses are the most popu-lar flower to send because they repre-sent ultimate beauty, love, admirationand perfection.”
For those who have just started dat-ing or want to show their admirationon Valentine’s Day, Ms. Powers suggesta mixed bouquet or the recipient’sfavorite flower or flowers. For longtimecouples, she suggests roses and for aspecial touch, the flowers used in theirwedding.
Chaney’s House of Flowers will fea-ture a dozen long-stemmed roses, aTeddy bear, balloon and chocolates onValentine’s Day.

FORT PIERCE — The name of therestaurant may have the word “hide-away,” in it, but it is well worth find-ing.
Tucked in the back of ColonnadesShopping Center in South Beach inFort Pierce, Capone’s Hideaway hasbeen owned by Sal and Beth Caponefor five years, and Mr. Capone saidbusiness continues to grow.
“Business has grown greatly overthe last few years,” he said.
My dining companion and I visitedon a Sunday evening, as the restau-rant is now open seven days a week.
As soon as I walked in, the relaxingsounds of Frank Sinatra and othercrooners greeted me. We eased intoone of the many comfortable booths, even though there were also tablesthat could be pushed together forlarger parties. The overall setting, complete with cloth tablecloths andnapkins, was an atmosphere youcould relax in to enjoy your dinner.
The staff adds to the atmosphere bydressing in a theme of 1940s gang-sters, complete with pinstripe suitsand hats. Mr. Capone said this makesthe restaurant stand out.
“We’re not a chain,” he said. “We’rean old-fashioned restaurant.”
The restaurant also offers differentdinner specials almost every night.
Mondays feature $5 hearty appetiz-ers and $3 glasses of wine, enablingdiners to try as many as they like.
On Tuesday and Thursday, dinerscan get two entrees and a bottle ofwine for $39. Wednesday, there aretwo filet mignon dinners for $30 andFriday and Saturday, two Maine lob-ster dinners are offered for $39. Sun-day features a $14.95 New York Stripnight.
The menu offers a large variety ofentrees, from seafood, such ascoconut-crusted snapper (which Mr.Capone says is his best-selling itemright now) to pastas, chicken and
veal.“I grew up in New York, and my par-
ents were right off the boat from Sici-ly. A lot of the food here has touchesof that,” he said.
But recently, he has also incorpo-rated a lot of the islands into his food,as well.
We started our meal with appetiz-ers of escargot and shrimp withmango salsa.
When the appetizers arrived, I triedboth and could not pick my favorite.
The escargot was well-seasonedand very tender and served in a gar-lic-butter sauce that provided theperfect backdrop.
The shrimp came nestled in a Gor-gonzola cream sauce with a touch ofCajun spices, bordered by sweet pep-pers. In the center sat the mangosalsa tossed in a fruit rum sauce. Richand creamy, the sauce complimentedthe sweet of the fruit and peppers.
For dinner, I ordered the blackenedMahi with salsa, and my companionordered the lamb shank, both housespecials. We also split the coconut-crusted snapper.
The blackened Mahi was a gener-ous portion of fish topped withmango salsa. While there was a nicebuildup of heat in the spices on thefish, it was cut nicely by the sweet-ness in the salsa. It sat upon a bed ofsweet potatoes with grilled zucchinion the side.
My snapper was gorgeous, crustedwith coconut. The flavor of thecoconut was very mild, and thecrunch held up well under the moistand delicious snapper. The largepiece of fish was light and tender. Thelight cream sauce that arrived withthis fish, however, was amazing, andwhatever was in it was the perfect

Flowers, candy, jewelry. Onewonders what old St. Valentinewould think of his day in these
times. While I certainly have noobjection to receiving shinybaubles, (tennis bracelet from ZalesJewelers). I think over the years, thebest gifts have been free (or verycheap).
Years ago, I was feeling less thanromantic on Valentine’s Day since Iwas eight months pregnant with myfourth child. Backaches, exhaustionand swollen everything was exacer-bated by three young children and ahusband who worked two jobs.
Money was tight and hours spenthelping little people pick just theperfect card for each friend andhelping little fingers sign each carddid little to help put me in a Hall-mark mood.
The holiday fell on a school day.As I raced to get everyone dressedand fed with visions of somedaywhen the children are grownromantic dinners intermingled withis Kim wearing matching shoes? DidDarlene finish her homework? Ihope Cindy’s teacher likes the cardwe spent so much time on.
Finding a beautiful card and smallbox of candy from my best beaucarefully placed in the morningcereal box brightened my dayconsiderably, but the handmade
coupon for one day of total childcare gave me the vapors.
I immediately began making plansfor a long leisurely afternoon at thebeach alone with a good book andthat box of candy.
The big day arrived along withitchy spots and a fever on the 3-year-old. By the following Sunday all threechildren were scratching andwhining. The third Sunday found myhusband with a fever. The one afterthat I was in labor. I think you get thedrift; the coupon became theimpossible dream.
I still have that unused coupon, but no need for child care. I wonderif it could be traded in on somethingmore useful (tennis bracelet fromZales Jewelers).
That day on the beach with a bookis still a great idea, especially if thebeach is on Bahia Honda Key in theFlorida Keys. The early bird/seniorspecial dinner can be romanticdepending on the company.
I may even be coerced into sharinga box of candy with my best beau.

My grandchildren think I’m as old asdirt. They ask me about what I did andhad at their age. How did I listen tomusic in a car? A radio, is that all?Where were the tapes, CDs, IPods? How did we record?
I’ve been doing a lot of genealogylately and started applying theirthinking to my experiences andknowledge.
Technology has come a long waysince I started this quest in the early1970s. I was lucky I lived in Orlando, which had a large public library andwonderful genealogy department. Ihad microfilm and a hand-crankedreader. Microfilm readers were in shortsupply, so I would get my children offto school, and be there when thelibrary opened at 9 a.m. in order to getone. If I left it unattended I would losemy turn, so I sat there all day, turningthat crank, page by page, until it was
time to retrieve the children fromschool.
I traced my family through censusrecords, state by state, county tocounty, page by page, with no indexes.
In chasing lost relatives the lastcouple of weeks, I am appreciating thatold school of research most of you don’tseem to understand. Your people arethere, you just don’t know how, or wantto go to the time and trouble of findingthem. Forget those fancy computer-generated indexes, when you are in atough spot. They are wonderful and agreat help, but are often wrong!Sometimes you just have to get downand dirty and actually do the work for
yourself.Do not take those indexes at face
value. Just because your family is notlisted, doesn’t mean they aren’t there, you have to go look for them. Whatlooks like the exact person you arelooking for on the index, probably isn’t.Go to the actual page and look at eachperson in the household. Find thisperson on the census before and after, and every census they are on for theirentire life. Document the entire family, age, birth place, etc., year by year.
This is “doing your census work” andshould be done for every family in yourdatabase. Time consuming? You bet itis! But your work will be documented(remember to add your sources as yougo) and much more accurate, andmaybe completely different, than allthose you are so inclined to just copyfrom someone else’s research.
When you start finding these families
yourself, and actually looking them upand checking the facts on your own,you will be amazed at how wrong allyour Internet copying has been. I’vefound my relatives listed in families ofcomplete strangers, by someone who

Introduced to the menu a year agoand homemade by Mrs. Capone, thebasket melts in your mouth and thenutty flavor is the perfect foil to thecreamy sorbet. It was a sweet endingto an amazing meal. It is made fresh,so Mr. Capone recommends callingahead and reserving the dessert to

had just stuck them where it lookedlike maybe they should go.
The fact is, one person does poorresearch, or just gets a few names orfacts wrong, and that throws thewhole family genealogy into turmoil. Then they throw the whole thing ontothe Internet. The next person comesalong and finds their ancestor listedwith the whole genealogy alreadydone. Wow! It’s so easy to just copy itand add it to your own database.Dozens of people do this, and so whenyou type in “Daniel J. Monahan, b.1849,” 50 family trees show up, all withthe exact information. It must be trueif so many people have it, correct? These are great clues, but just usethem as that.
Have you ever considered that thewhole family tree you just foundonline could be the figment of some-one’s imagination and just put on as aprank? I could do this myself veryeasily, and it would be copied by
everyone who found it and be taken asfact. Scary, isn’t it? All that “stuff” youhave copied may be wrong.
This is why professional genealogistpreach; “document, document, document and “always site yoursources.” If you will notice, mostInternet family trees have no sources, many have no person to contact and ifthey do, the contact person has nouseful information. They will tell youthey just copied it from someone else.
In genealogical research, the rule ofthumb is that you need three sourceswho agree before the fact is proven. That is often tough to do, and at timesimpossible, but it will stand the test oftime when accomplished.
The sayings go, “garbage in, garbageout,” and “if you want something doneright, do it yourself.” These areespecially true in genealogy.
You will be amazed at how muchmore appreciation and connection tothese ancestors you have, by findingthem yourself.
