Why donate to the Archdiocesan Annual Appeal?
As part of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, the Catholic Church in the United States, and the Universal Church, we are
all called to give our time, talent and treasure in support of the ministries and services offered to us here at St. Veronica Parish
and School. On any given day, our staff and ministry coordinators may be in contact with the Office of Worship, the Office of
Faith Formation, the Department of Catholic Schools, Human Resources, the Legal Department, and many others. We use the
official websites of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops - www.USCCB.org - and the Vatican - www.Vatican.va -
for guidance, assistance, and resources. All of these services are offered at no additional cost to St. Veronica.
If you haven’t already done so, please prayerfully consider your donation to the 2018 Archdiocesan Annual Appeal, per-
haps at an even greater level than you were able to donate in previous years. Together we can all help grow the Catholic Church
at home and abroad!
News From the Archdiocese of San Francisco
Respect Life Mass and Awards Ceremony - Sunday, February 25 - Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone will celebrate
the annual Respect Life Mass at St. Mary’s Cathedral on Sunday, February 25, at 11:00 a.m. Following Mass he will
join in awarding prizes to winners of the 29th Annual Respect Life Essay Contest at a ceremony in Patron’s Hall. Con-
gratulations to all the students who took part in the contest, and those who wrote winning entries, including five stu-
dents from our St. Veronica Catholic School!
Registration Open: Bay Area Catholic Men’s Conference - Saturday, March 10 - “Called to Lead” is the theme
for the Bay Area Catholic Men’s Conference. Keynote speaker is Doug Barry, founder and director of the Catholic
ministry RADIX. Doug was co-host for EWTN’s program Life on the Rock for many years, and is currently host for
EWTN’s new television program Battle Ready. Cost (including lunch) is $45 ($35 for early bird registration by Feb.
26) and $20 for men under 20. Register online at SFBayMen.info or contact Ed Hopfner at 415-614-5680.
Living our Consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary - On October 7, 2017, Archbishop Cordileone consecrat-
ed our Archdiocese to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. During his homily on that day, the Archbishop included sugges-
tions of ways to live out the Consecration - through increased practices of prayer, penance, and adoration. Prayer cards
with reminders of these actions are available through the St. Veronica Parish Office in both English and Spanish. The
prayer cards, as well as many other resources, are also available to view or download at www.sfarch.org/ihm.
Guidelines for Fast and
Abstinence during Lent
Abstinence: Everyone 14 years of age
& older is bound to abstain from meat
on Ash Wednesday, each Friday of
Lent, & Good Friday.
Fasting: Those 18-60 years of age are
to fast on Ash Wednesday & Good Fri-
day. On these two days the law of fast-
ing allows only one full meal a day, but
does not prohibit taking some food
during the day, as long as this does not
constitute another full meal. Drinking
liquids during the day is permitted.

Reflecting on the Word First Sunday of Lent
I once saw a beautiful double rainbow break
through dark storm clouds. Seeing that rainbow
comforted me. I sensed the presence of a recently
deceased friend and I felt the nearness of God.
Rainbows remind me to look for calm after a storm
and find God near.
God promised: “When I bring clouds over the
earth, and the bow appears in the clouds, I will recall
the covenant I have made between me and you and
all living being” (Genesis 9:14-15a). The rainbow
reminds God, and us, of that promise. In Baptism
we enter into a relationship with God. In Baptism
we put to death whatever is not of God, “the flesh”
in St. Paul. In Baptism we promise to live by the
Spirit. Lent is a rainbow of renewal, wherein God
reminds us of the promise never again to destroy all
mortal beings. During Lent we enter the desert with
Jesus to hear him say to us: “This is the time of ful-
fillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent,
and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15).
Repent! Reflect on the floodwaters of sin that
keep you from believing God is here. Repent!
Renew your baptismal promise to live Jesus. Re-
pent! Name your storms that cloud over God’s un-
conditional, merciful love. Ask Jesus for help to
find the rainbows of forgiveness and new life that
often follow those storms. Our example will give
hope to those preparing for Baptism at the Easter
Vigil. St. Francis de Sales taught that life happens.
Whatever happens, God is with us. Look for God’s
rainbows that proclaim: God is here! God will not
destroy you! Repent! Turn away from sin and be-
lieve in the Gospel.
For Prayerful Consideration & Discussion
When have you experienced a rainbow of hope
after a stormy time in your life?
Name one way you can repent to reorient your
life to live the gospel this Lent
Living and Praying with the Word
These forty days of Lent, O God, we give our
storms to you. Open your eyes to see your rainbow
and renew our lives. Help us trust in your promise
that you will remember the covenant you made with
us. - Living the Word
