3rd Sunday of Advent

St. Pius V Catholic Church December 13, 2015

Dear Friends,

Jubilee of Mercy

Our Advent coincides with the beginning , this week, of the Jubilee Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis. Let us make the

Works of Mercy an integral part of our preparation for the Nativity of the Lord.

In his proclamation, Pope Francis tells us: “It is my burning desire that, during this Jubilee, the Christian people may reflect on the

corporal and spiritual works of mercy. It will be a way to reawaken our conscience, too often grown dull in the face of poverty. And let

us enter more deeply into the heart of the Gospel where the poor have a special experience of God’s mercy. Jesus introduces us to these

works of mercy in his preaching so that we can know whether or not we are living as his disciples. Let us rediscover these corporal

works of mercy: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, welcome the stranger, heal the sick, visit the imprisoned,

and bury the dead. And let us not forget the spiritual works of mercy: to counsel the doubtful, instruct the ignorant, admonish sinners,

comfort the afflicted, forgive offences, bear patiently those who do us ill, and pray for the living and the dead.”

“Each time that one of the faithful personally performs one or more of these actions, he or she shall surely obtain the Jubilee Indul-

gence.” (This special plenary indulgence, which brings with it remission of all temporal punishment in is linked, as well, to celebration

of the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist, a profession of faith, and prayer for the Pope and his intentions.)

Parish Councils

Over the course of the next two months, we will be inviting you to take part in the life of the parish in a special way as one of the mem-

bers of our Parish Councils. Please prayerfully consider offering your experience and wisdom, your talents and time, in service to the

Church. Our Pastoral Council advises the pastor on the needs of the parish; our Finance Council advises the pastor and oversees the

financial affairs of the parish; the School Board advises the pastor and principal with regard to school matters; and the Liturgy Com-

mittee helps to plan our Liturgies and guide our liturgical ministries.

There is a special link on our home page to each of these Councils along with an opportunity to register your interest in serving. All of

our Councils (with the exception of the School Board) are fully bi-lingual.

Queridos Amigos

The Third Sunday of Advent is called “Gaudete Sunday” from from the Latin word for “rejoice” in this Sunday’s Entrance

antiphon and the theme of joy in its Second Reading. December is the month during which days are shorter and dark comes

earlier. This Advent call to joy helps us remember God’s many blessings, his mercy towards us, to brighten the physical

darkness. Have a blessed Advent! – For daily prayer and reflections for this week, go to “Advent” on the parish website (http://

www.stpiusvchurch.com/advent).

First Reading Zep 3:14-18a

Shout for joy, O daughter Zion! Sing joyfully, O Israel! Be glad and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem! The

LORD has removed the judgment against you he has turned away your enemies; the King of Israel, the LORD, is in your

midst, you have no further misfortune to fear. On that day, it shall be said to Jerusalem: Fear not, O Zion, be not

discouraged! The LORD, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior; he will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew

you in his love, he will sing joyfully because of you, as one sings at festivals.

Responsorial Psalm Is 12 R. Cry out with joy and gladness: for among you is the great and Holy One of Israel.

Second Reading 2 Phil 4:4-7

Brothers and sisters: Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! Your kindness should be known to all. The

Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known

to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

Gospel Lk 3:10-18

The crowds asked John the Baptist, “What should we do?” He said to them in reply, “Whoever has two cloaks should share

with the person who has none. And whoever has food should do likewise.” Even tax collectors came to be baptized and they

said to him, “Teacher, what should we do?” He answered them, “Stop collecting more than what is prescribed.” Soldiers

also asked him, “And what is it that we should do?” He told them, “Do not practice extortion, do not falsely accuse anyone,

and be satisfied with your wages.” Now the people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether

John might be the Christ. John answered them all, saying, “I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is

coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His

winnowing fan is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn

with unquenchable fire.” Exhorting them in many other ways, he preached good news to the people.

El Misal (Ordinario de la Misa) esta en Oramos Cantando/We Pray in Song a Partir de 150

Primera lectura Sof 3, 14-18

mal.

Salmo Responsorial Is 12 R. El Señor es mi Dios y salvador.

Segunda lectura Flp 4, 4-7
