HOW GOD INTENDS US TO LIVE. Today’s readings are again directed to believers, communities of faith. As in last week’s reading, Amos confronts us with a condemnation of those whose lives are focused on pleasure and self-absorption. The psalm contrasts that focus with the Lord’s—justice for the oppressed; food the hungry; freedom for captives; sight to the blind; raising of those who are bowed down; loving the just; protecting strangers, orphans, and the widow; and by doing so, thwarting the way of the wicked. Timothy urges the pursuit of righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. Luke tells the familiar tale of the wealthy man and the poor beggar at his doorstep, who experience life very differently in this world and in the next. We are once again being given clear indications about how God intends for us to live our lives. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.\ T ’ R

First Reading — Woe to the complacent, stretched comfortably on their couches! (Amos 6:1a, 4-7). Psalm — Praise the Lord, my soul! (Psalm 146) Second Reading — Pursue righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness (1 Timothy 6:11-16). Gospel — There was a rich man who dined sumptuously each day. Lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus (Luke 16:19-31). T T Over the past century, a desire to recover a deep sense of unity among all believers in Christ has grown. The “ecumenical movement” (from the Greek word meaning the “the whole inhabited world”) began among Protestant Christians, but was given great energy in 1920 with a letter from the Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople, calling for closer dialogue and cooperation among Christians. In 1960, Pope John XXIII invited Protestant and Orthodox observers to the Second Vatican Council. In 1964, the Council’s Decree on Ecumenism named these Christians “separated brethren,” a huge leap forward from the time of labeling them as “outside the Church.” A year later, a new pope, Paul VI, and the Orthodox Patriarch officially nullified the condemnations that walled off East from West for nine hundred years.

The pace and optimism of the 1960s has sadly waned, and the signs of progress toward unity are few; yet there are wider agreements on sharing Communion among various Christian denominations, and among Protestants agreements regarding sharing of ecclesiastical life and ministry. Among the success stories of the ecumenical movement are greater cooperation among Christian clergy, a similar Lectionary for Protestants and Catholics, and even experiments in the monastic life and common worship. —James Field, Copyright © J. DID YOU KNOW?

Understanding community grooming. Like the psychological grooming we discussed last week, community grooming is another way a predator inserts himself into the life of his child victim. In community grooming, the predator develops a rapport with the community surrounding his victims, appearing to be kind, generous, and caring. This can often lead to increased levels of trust from adults around the victim, and increased access to the victim. The predator uses manipulation and lies to build a false image of good, which makes it harder for victims to come forward to express discomfort or report an allegation. For more information on community grooming, get a copy of the VIRTUS® article “The Stockholm Syndrome and Victims of Abuse, Part II” at http://www.la-archdiocese.org/org/protecting/Pages/VIRTUS-Current-Online-Articles.aspx.

Paul wrote a letter to Timothy telling him the qualities he should pursue (1 Timothy 6:11-16).

SAINT LORENZO RUIZ (first canonized Filipino martyr) AND COMPANIONS’ STORY

Lorenzo was born in Manila of a Chinese father and a Filipino mother, both Christians. Thus

he learned Chinese and Tagalog from them, and Spanish from the Dominicans whom he served as altar boy and sacristan. He became a professional calligrapher, transcribing documents in beautiful penmanship. He was a full member of the Confraternity of the Holy Rosary under Dominican auspices. He married and had two sons and a daughter. Lorenzo’s life took an abrupt turn when he was accused of murder. Nothing further is known except the statement of two Dominicans that “he was sought by the authorities on account of a homicide to which he was present or which was attributed to him.” At that time, three Dominican priests, Antonio Gonzalez, Guillermo Courtet, and Miguel de Aozaraza, were about to sail to Japan in spite of a violent persecution there. With them was a Japanese priest, Vicente Shiwozuka de la Cruz, and a layman named Lazaro, a leper. Lorenzo, having taken asylum with them, was allowed to accompany them. But only when they were at sea did he learn that they were going to Japan. They landed at Okinawa. In Japan they were soon found out, arrested, and taken to Nagasaki. They were subjected to an unspeakable kind of torture. The superior, Fr. Gonzalez, died after some days. The five were put to death by being hanged upside down in pits. Boards fitted with semi-circular holes were fitted around their waists and stones put on top to increase the pressure. They were tightly bound, to slow circulation and prevent a speedy death. They were allowed to hang for three days. By that time Lorenzo and Lazaro were dead. Still alive, the three priests were then beheaded. In 1987, Pope John Paul II canonized these six and 10 others: Asians and Europeans, men and women, who spread the faith in the Philippines, Formosa, and Japan. Lorenzo Ruiz is the first canonized Filipino martyr. The Liturgical Feast of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz and Companions is September 28.

Thank you for your generous service in our Archdiocese. All priests, employees and volunteers are required to complete re-certification training in a Safe Environment program every four years. Please drop off a copy of your current certificate to the Office; if your certificate had expired, it is your obligation to find the soonest scheduled class to take it and comply with this utmost urgent matter. We are under very strict scrutiny to comply with the archdiocesan policies adopted under the Charter for the Protection of Minors established by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and its annual compliance audit.

Classes are offered continually at various parishes on a rotating basis

(visit www.virtusonline.org). Fr.
