Regina Coeli Report

Two months after St. Mary’s Academy and College celebrated the ordination of one of her alumni, Reverend Daniel Chavarria, several of her priest-alumni returned to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of their ordination.

Frs. Robert MacPherson, Patrick Summers, and Steven Webber, graduates of the Academy and College, along with their fellow seminary-graduate Fr. Trevor Burfitt, who had attended Immaculate Conception Academy in Post Falls, Idaho, held their own class reunion on April 14, in St. Marys, Kansas. They came from near and far to the small Kansas town. Fr. MacPherson arrived from his mis-sion in the Philippines; Fr. Burfitt from Phoenix, Arizona; Fr. Summers from England; Fr. Webber from Kansas City, Missouri.

With a Solemn High Mass, the four priests celebrated ten years of the priesthood. Fr. Burfitt was celebrant with Fr. MacPherson serving as deacon and Fr. Summers as subdea-con and Fr. Webber as the master of ceremonies.

The district superior for the Society in the United States, Fr. Arnold Rostand, preached the sermon for the Mass. Gratitude—a seldom-heard theme for a sermon—was the focus of Fr. Rostand’s sermon.

He called on both the priests and the faithful to offer prayers of thanks to God for the graces brought down by the priests and for the gift of the priesthood itself “because it is the vocation of the priest to receive from God, from the Church, and to keep it—to keep that treasure—and to pass it on to other generations,” said Fr. Rostand. “It is in the nature of the priesthood to receive the gift, the treasure, to keep it faithfully, and to pass it on.”

That treasure was the treasure of grace, of the Church, of the Faith. It is through the mystical unity of priest with God, the priest as another Christ, that this treasure comes.

Letter from the District Superior

Fr. Arnaud Rostand, the District Superior, recently gave an interview to The Remnant, the whole text of which is available on SSPX.org.

We here provide some selections and encourage you to read it in its entirety online.

MJM: Ever since his election, Pope Benedict has made no se-

cret of the high priority he personally places on healing the SSPX

ª schism.º What seem to remain uncertain, however, are his motives.

Is it possible to ascertain the difference between the Holy Father' s

genuine desires to heal this rift for political reasons vs. an actual pa-

pal recognition (no matter how limited) of the legitimacy of the doc-

trinal objections raised by the SSPX?

FR: The reason why the Pope wants to resolve this situation is

difficult to know. On the one hand, there seems to be a desire on his

part to avoid a so-called ª schism.º On the other hand, he is aware of

the dramatic situation of the Church, which readers of your news-

paper know all too well: open heresies professed by churchmen,

sometimes touching the divinity of our Lord Himself, not to mention

open rebellion, loss of faith, and disciplinary problems, whether in

Austria, America, or Ireland¼ The Holy Father, I think, sees that the

SSPX could be of some assistance in helping fight these real and

all-too-prevalent problems.

Further, however, there is a mystery which I think is linked to the

mystery of the Church which is at the same time humanÐ that is

made of men with their weaknesses and sinsÐ but also divine; that

is to say that Our Lord Jesus Christ still leads and works actively

through and with men.

There are obviously human reasons for what is happening today

in the Church and it is important to try to understand what the ª po-

liticalº reasons are for the different moves. A supernatural view of

things, however, is much more enlightening.

MJM: Archbishop Lefebvre justified his decision to consecrate

bishops against the will of the Holy Father in 1988 by citing a provi-

sion in the Code of Canon Law for extraordinary measures during a

ª state of emergencyº in the Church. If rapprochement between the

SSPX and the Vatican were now possible, would that mean that the

Archbishop was overzealous in 1988, or has the ª state of emergen-

cyº simply ceased to exist?

FR: No, the state of necessity in the Church does not depend

on the Society of Saint Pius X, regularized or not. It can only be an

objective situation of the Church. Today, this state of necessity still

exists, as unfortunately too often priests and faithful cannot receive

in a normal way the true teaching of the Catholic Faith or receive

the sacraments in a safe way. You have priests and even bishops

who profess open heresies, or accept and celebrate scandalous

ceremonies¼

The state of necessity will only cease when there will be objec-

tive reasons to entrust our souls to the clergy and hierarchy of the

Church without any prudential protection.

MJM: I believe all sincere traditional Catholics long for the day

when unity will be re-established in the Church and the SSPX can

at long last shake off the unjust stigma of ª schism.º Regardless of

what happens in the days and months ahead between Rome and

the SSPX, what can we laymen do to help promote unity within all

the various camps of Tradition in a world at war with Christ and His

Church?

FR: Pray. Pray a lot. The work that every Catholic can do is to

pray for the Pope, for the Church, for His Excellency Bishop Fellay,

and the Society of Saint Pius X. There is nothing more urgent to do.

Never before have there been so many prayers, especially in the

form of the Rosary Crusades; it is very encouraging. How could God

abandon us?

Do not be disturbed by the rumors, especially the different gos-

sips on the Internet, based on feelings but surely not facts. If you

wish to have information you can sign up for the updates of the

Society website (sspx.org), where you will be then the first informed

of any development.

Let us entrust our prayers to the Blessed Virgin, follow the de-

sign of Providence, and beg the continued protection of the Good

Lord.

and man,” Fr. Rostand said. “By your consecration, by the very fact that you were ordained priests, you have been put above others, above the children of God, not only by the sanctifying grace that we must all receive and must keep, but by a special character that changed your being, who you are.”

He therefore told the priests and the faithful to be grateful to God for these unique benefits brought on by the priests through their priesthood. “We must be especially grateful for having received what we have received,” the district superior said. “There are so few in this world who

have received as much as we do, as much as we did. There is, therefore, a special gratitude that we must have. We must have a gratitude for all the instruments that God has used in passing on, in giving us what we have—our priest-hood, the faith, the sacraments, and so on.”

He also called on the priests and the faithful to have gratitude towards Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre for passing on the Sacraments and the traditions he himself received; to the Society “which is an instrument used by God in the past decades and that will be used, we believe, until the time of the restoration of the Church.”

After the Mass, the priests and their families and friends celebrated further with a small reception. Fr. Kenneth Novak, stationed at St. Mary’s, toasted the four priests, call-ing on them to continue their work of charity.

Firstly, however, he praised the mothers of these priests. As the priest is another Christ, the mother of the priest is comparable to the Blessed Mother. “Blessed is the fruit of these women for what they bore,” Fr. Novak said, “so for those that are here, I guess that would make you blessed mothers.”

He then complimented the priests for their ten years of steadfastness to God’s service, to their mission as the fire-starters and fire-keepers of the fire of charity.

“There’s fire in the tabernacle, and that fire, somehow, ignites all of us,” Fr. Novak continued. “But if there’s not a priest there, that’s when the charity’s gone cold. And there won’t be any goodness, won’t be any justice, won’t be any mercy because we won’t have it. The priest is not there to put it there anymore. Without a priest, you will not have these things.”

Fr. Mackin’sBoys

On Laetare Sunday, March 18, between the feasts of St. Joseph and St. Patrick, the Cleveland, Ohio, par-ish at St. Peregrine’s was in harmony with the Church’s words: “Rejoice, O Jerusalem!” On Laetare Sunday, Fr. Patrick Mackin, bringing with him nearly 20 boys from his Kentucky chapel, hosted a celebration of the feasts of the two saints. In his sermon, Fr. Mackin, using St. Joseph and St. Patrick as his models of manliness, spoke about the qualities of true manhood, the rarity of true men, and the need of true men in the modern world.

After the Mass, the parishioners gathered for food and games. The boys from both parishes, like knights in a joust, took to the football field. The game, even though it was called the “Rose Bowl,” named after the liturgical colors of Laetare Sunday, was played in honor of St. Joseph and St. Patrick. The Cleveland boys took St. Patrick as their patron; the Kentucky boys fought under St. Joseph. As Fr. Mackin said, “The luck of the Irish paid off.” Cleveland defeated Kentucky, 33 to 22.

Parents Conference in St. Marys

“Since everything must be referred to the law and mind of God, in order to bring about the universal and permanent restoration of marriage, it is indeed of the utmost impor-tance that the faithful should be well-instructed concern-ing matrimony; both by word of mouth and by the written word, not cursorily but often and fully, by means of plain and weighty arguments, so that these truths will strike the intellect and will be deeply engraved on their hearts.”

Reverend John Fullerton, Rector of St. Mary’s Academy and College, and Reverend Todd Angele, Assistant to the Parish at St. Mary’s, followed this dictate from Pius XI in his encyclical letter Casti Connubii.

On January 28, the two priests held an all-day seminar of six conferences focusing on marriage and the relation between man and woman. With a parish of nearly 3,000 parishioners and around 100 baptisms annually, the family and marriage is a significant subject matter.

The seminar, therefore, was called Family Matters. The conferences focused on the nature of marriage, marriage preparation, the nature of family, the understanding of po-tential marriage and family problems, the sources of those problems, and the avoidance of them.

Several hundred parishioners, married, courting, and single, attended these conferences, which were, as Fr. Fullerton said in the opening seminar, to provide Catholic principles of marriage and the family.

Book Review: Marcel Lefebvre—The Biography Bishop Tissier de Mallerais

Available at www.angeluspress.org.

What will come about of the legacy of Archbishop Lefebvre?

This question is on the lips of Catholics worldwide who have fol-

lowed closely or loosely the struggle of Tradition in the last 40

years. The Society of St. Pius X, created by Archbishop Lefebvre

in 1970, has held the flag of the Mass and doctrine of all times

before Rome. The time may be propitious to delve into the inner

thought of its founder, following the biography of his close associ-

ate, Bishop Tissier.

Doubtless, the work reads like an epic novel about kings and

villains. It shows a man standing like a rock in the midst of a tor-

mented society revamping its past. It reads also like a drama of

a man of faith confronted with a Fifth Column within the ranks

of his beloved Church. The grand names of Africa, Rome and

France come under the spotlight and reveal many colorful details

of Roman diplomacy, African politics and mission work. We fol-

low with profuse details the tragedy of the ª Third World Warº and

the principles at stake which opposed the liberal faction to the

Roman Curia.

The last section is dedicated to the work of the ª Iron Bishop,º

the SSPX. The great African missioner decided it was high time

to resume his former work of training priests according to the

multisecular tradition, with the Mass of all times in Latin, with

Aquinas and the Church Fathers, and the ascetic discipline. This

decision was to count without the new spirit now dominant under

St. Peter' s dome and, after the ` forbidden Mass,' there came the

` forbidden society,' and even the ̀ forbidden bishops.'

This compelling biography sheds much light on the mystery

of a not ordinary man who was so extraordinarily sure of himself

only because he was absolutely sure of God.

The Death of Christian Culture

Dr. John Senior deals with the root causes of how and why Chris-

tian culture is dying. He approaches the subject through an in-

depth study of literature, culture, history, and religion, to alert

citizens of the West of what they stand to lose, especially as edu-

cation ceases to be about the truth and becomes merely an ex-

ercise in bureaucracy and ª ticket-punching.º Ultimately, Senior

warns that the cultural, literary, artistic, and social treasures of

classical and Christian civilization must be preserved and lived,

lest they be lost forever.

The Restoration of Christian Culture

In this compelling ª sequelº to his well-known book, The Death of

Christian Culture, Dr. Senior answers this question with a genu-

inely realistic, but no less resounding yes.

The Restoration of Christian Culture continues warning of the

ongoing extinction of the cultural patrimony of ancient Greece

and Rome, medieval Europe, and the early-modern West, owing

to the bureaucratization, mechanization, and standardization of

life today. Beyond this, Senior offers challenging and provocative

ideas for recapturing and living the cultural traditions of classical

and Christian history.

The Cristeros

In the early part of the 20th Century, Ma-

sonic, Marxist revolutionaries, who were

nothing less than the enemies of Jesus

Christ, seized control of the government

of Mexico and attempted to destroy the

Church. In the midst of the terror, coura-

geous priests clandestinely made their

way through the countryside dispensing

the sacraments and ministering to the

Mexican faithful. As these holy priests ful-

filled the duties of their divine vocations, an

army of laymen rose up and challenged the

godless government. They were the Cristeros, and this is their story.

Catechism of the Crisis

What can faithful Catholics do in the midst

of an unprecedented crisis in the Church

and in the world, and especially today in

the midst of more blatant and open Chris-

tophobia? The first thing we have to do

is understand the truths of the Catholic

faith, and to understand the errors, both

inside and outside the Church which

threaten that same Faith.

This excellent work by Fr. Gaudron will

help us to grasp the true roots of the mod-

ern crisis and the gravity of the problems affecting us. Originally pub-

lished in order to both solidify our understanding of the principles be-

hind the crisis and as an aid to help those who do not see the gravity

of the current situation, this work follows the traditional catechetical

format: Each question is followed by a succinct response, and then

by a series of more detailed questions and answers that justify and

elaborate the general answer. 248pp. Color Softcover. Only $16.95!

almost 300,000 rosaries per month for this crucial apostolate.

*For those not attending a Society chapel, please send your totaled tally sheets to the District Office as soon as the Crusade ends on May 17 so that we can quickly calculate a grand total for the District.

Please help us to storm Heaven with prayers for the Consecration of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
