FFebruary 9, 2020 ~ Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Dear Parishioners: With the arrival of February pitchers and catchers are getting ready to arrive for Spring Training this week, a sure sign that Spring is not far away. It is
also a sure sign that Lent is not far away, with Ash Wednesday less than three weeks away. In these next few weeks leading up to Lent, we are blessed to be hearing from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount from Saint Matthew’s Gospel each Sunday. The Sermon on the Mount is telling us that there is supposed to be something different about us. We are supposed to be thinking with the mind of Christ and not the mind of the world.
“You are the salt of the earth,” Jesus tells His disciples and us in today’s Gospel. Salt is a preservative, keeping food from corrupting. We live in a very morally confused world. We who are baptized into Christ Jesus are supposed to be like salt, preserving the world around us from falling into moral corruption, infusing our culture with all that is good, wholesome, beautiful, and true. “You are the Light of the World,” Jesus also tells us. And that light is the light of Jesus shining out from within us by the way we live.
That light of Christ needs to shine out in a special way from within our families. This second Sunday of February each year is designated World Marriage Sunday, when we are asked to pray in a special way for married couples to be strengthened in holiness in order to build up the Body of Christ and form a domestic church where Christ is at the center of their family life. It is in the family where the ways of God are first taught, where children first learn what it is to be loved, and how to love – to love God and to love others, to be self-giving and not self-ish. Marriage and the Family are under attack today. We need to pray for the strength and holiness of our families, for as Saint John Paul II put it: “The future of our world passes through the family.”
I read a great article recently which said that two things are essential for holiness and peace in our families: prayer and a family meal. The first thing is prayer. Father Patrick Peyton led a movement for the Rosary as a family prayer back in the 1950’s. Imagine praying the Rosary together as a family on a regular basis. Father Peyton’s words back then are just as true today: “The family that prays together, stays together, and a world at prayer will be a world at peace.” And a family at prayer will be a family at peace.
The second thing to foster holiness and peace in our families is a family meal. Many have lamented that we are losing this beautiful aspect of family life. There is a movement today which has been promoted by
Cardinal Dolan here in New York to get every family in this Country to pledge to have a meal together as a family at least once a week. A family meal once a week, it is argued, would bring a lot of harmony and unity to our families and settle a lot of problems.
And this is also true for our spiritual family, the Church. As God’s Family we need to get together for a family meal at least once a week on the Lord’s Day for this sacred family meal we call the Mass. There is nothing more beautiful than seeing a family together here at Sunday Mass every week where we are fed with the Bread of Life, Jesus Himself in the Eucharist. Only by making Jesus in the Eucharis the very center of our lives can our families be what Jesus calls them to be in today’s Gospel: The salt of the earth and the light of the world. May God bless us all.
Sincerely in Christ, Rev. Matthew J. Furey
