Social Justice
The Catholic Church long ago proclaimed the importance of “Social Justice.” However, words and concepts are
often high-jacked by groups of people who wish to distort truth for their own desire to gain power and influence.
As a result, the concept of social justice has often been used to promote socialism. Nothing could be further from
the truth.
Social justice is not the same thing as socialism. While socialism depends on wide-spread government control
from the top down, social justice places the priority for social interaction with small groups, such as the family,
and encourages voluntary organization from the bottom up. Therefore, one very vital aspect of social justice is
the understanding of the word subsidiarity. As the Catechism of the Catholic Church states:
Socialization . . . presents dangers. Excessive intervention by the state can threaten personal freedom and
initiative. The teaching of the Church has elaborated the principle of subsidiarity, according to which “a
community of a higher order should not interfere in the internal life of a community of a lower order, depriving
the later of its functions, but rather should support it in case of need and help to co-ordinate its activity with the
activity of the rest of society, always with a view to the common good. (CCC 1883)
The use of the term “social justice” in the context of socialism perverts the concept of subsidiarity and instead
emphasizes the role of government and enhancement of governmental power. The result is a gradual loss of
freedom, economic and religious.
EVANGELISM IN ACTION: Understand the term “subsidiarity” and defend the correct meaning of “social
justice” and the correct intentions of the Catholic Church.
Please send your comments, thoughts and suggestions for EVANGELISM IN ACTION to
[email protected] or call Keith Thompson at 772-631-2080.

As the Eleventh Anniversary of the horrific attacks on our nation that occurred on September 11, 2001 approaches, the Parish Family of St. Martin de Porres and Knights of Columbus Council # 8048 invite you to join us as we honor all the brave men and women who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on that terrible day in our history at our
7th Annual Memorial Blue Mass. The Mass will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Gerald M. Barbarito, Bishop of Palm Beach. The Blue Mass refers to the blue uniforms worn by so many public safety personnel. It is meant to honor those who daily protect and serve us. At the Mass, we will remember law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency rescue personnel who have fallen in the line of duty and pray for the safety
of all officers.
Our tribute will begin on September 11th at 10:30 AM with a Solemn Video and Poetry Presentation which will include Posting of Colors by Honor/Color Guards of Police and Fire/Rescue Personnel. Bishop Barbarito will celebrate the Solemn Blue Mass at 11:00 AM. Immediately following Mass, we will proceed to a designated area outdoors where
the tribute will continue with the traditional “21 Gun Salute” and “Taps”. After the tribute, all are welcome to attend a luncheon in the Tuscany Banquet room of the San Mart’ Inn
located on Parish grounds.
A $5.00 donation will be accepted from all non-uniformed guests to help defray expenses.

Why We Need to Give
Dean Martin echoed a basic truth in his signature song,
“Everybody Loves Somebody.” Love’s reach extends beyond
song and art into religion. Jesus, whose life is our greatest lesson
about love, identified love as the path to salvation. Love goes
beyond well-wishing to action, the “laying down” of life. Jesus
saved us through giving. He gave us himself.
We’ve all experienced the joy of giving, the excitement of
presenting an unsolicited gift or a particularly generous one. We
enjoy witnessing the joy our gift brings. Parents experience this
when they give to young children. We all experience it when we
give to a friend, a neighbor, a charity, a stranger.
However, the warm feeling that accompanies giving is the least
important part of the experience. The truth is we need to give
because we grow by giving. The world would have us believe that
we grow by getting: the more I have, the more I am. In this view,
persons are defined by things. Personal possessions count more
than personal qualities, like character and virtue. But a fast car or a
flashy cellphone is a poor means of self-expression. In order to
express ourselves, we need to share our uniqueness with others, to
create and to give.
Giving allows us to grow socially. We need relationships and
relationships are enriched by giving.
Giving helps us to understand the true purpose of our possessions.
We should own things in order to increase our ability to serve
others. Do our possessions also extend our ability to love? If they
are shared with others, they can.
We sometimes hold back our giving because of fear. If I volunteer
my time and donate my money, will I have enough left for me?
Am I willing to risk sacrifice? Giving and sacrifice strengthen
relationships. And when we give, we strengthen the community.
As St. Paul says, “Love never fails” (1 Corinthians 13:8).
We all have a need to give – a need to love “somebody
sometime.” Because God loved us first, he has given us abundant
life and a unique combination of gifts. Through our baptism, Jesus
calls us to join his mission of salvation, and our gifts are tools
which contribute to that mission. When we give, we obey the first
commandment, we practice the greatest virtue, and we reveal
ourselves as Christian stewards.

Lord Jesus Christ,
with hearts on fire we welcome you. You approach us and walk
with us. Remove all that restrains us from recognizing you;
and whatever stops us from putting aside everything else to
follow you.
Open the Scriptures to us. Teach us to know you and to see you
and to hear you in the assembly of the Baptized, in the
ministries of the Church, in the proclamation of the Word, and
in the Breaking of the Bread.
School us in the ways of the Gospel. Coach us in the ways of
Christian Stewardship. Show us how to use wisely the blessings
given to us. Show us how to take good care of those whose
happiness and well-being you have entrusted to us.
Bless our lively exchange as we discuss all that has happened,
and as we continue to dream of all that might be.
Astonish us, when we have little sense and are so slow to
believe the prophets.
Encourage us, when we are overwhelmed. Strengthen us, when
we are so easily frightened. Challenge our complacency and our
temptation to quit. Stir the embers that have grown cold.
And more than anything else, stay with us, Lord.
For the kingdom and the power and the glory are yours, now
and forever.
Amen. From the International Catholic Council on Stewardship September 2012
Spiritual Adopt a Baby Month 7
“I Can Look Around”
Beginning this month our baby uses all four
senses. Our babies eyelids open and close, and the eyes look
around. Our baby can hear, taste, touch, cough, yawn, and
hiccup. Our baby now can recognizes its mother’s voice. Our
babies grip is even stronger now than it will be after birth. The
hair on our babies head is growing longer and the downy
covering the rest of the body is disappearing. During this time
our baby will receive antibodies from mother providing our baby
with immunity to a wide variety of diseases.
To counteract the movement for abortion, Msgr. Fulton J. Sheen
recommended the spiritual adoption of unborn babies. During
your earthly life, this child which you have adopted, will be
known only to GOD, but in the hereafter, you will enjoy each
other’s company for all eternity. Jesus, Mary, Joseph, I love you
very much; I beg you to spare the life of the unborn child that I
have spiritually adopted, and which is in danger of being aborted.
Please join us in prayerful and peaceful Vigil in front of Planned
Parenthood Wed 3-5 & Fri. 8-10 Rt. 1 Emerald Plaza. David
Olio 221-1865.

"Twenty-four Reasons For Wanting To Spend
One Hour With Jesus In The Blessed
Sacrament." (http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/
resource.php?n=479) This completes the 12-weeks of
Reasons. I hope all enjoyed and learned something
from each week. Please consider putting your favorite
reason into practice by scheduling an hour. God bless!
Reasons #12
Church Teachings - If the Pope himself would give you a
special invitation to visit him in the Vatican, this honor
would be nothing in comparison to the honor and dignity
that Jesus Himself bestows upon you with the Invitation
of spending one hour with Him in the Blessed
Sacrament. "The Divine Eucharist bestows upon the
Christian people the incomparable dignity."
(Pope Paul VI, Mysterium Fidei)
Biblical Teachings - Each moment you spend with Jesus in
the Blessed Sacrament brings joy, pleasure, and delight
to His Sacred Heart! "My joy, My pleasure, My delight is
to be with you." (Prov 8:31 9; Mk 11:23; Mk :36; Rev 21:5)
Thank you to all who have a weekly hour! It is because of you
that others can come before our Lord any time of day! ** If
you are frequenting the Chapel but do not have an hour, OR if
you have yet to visit the Lord in the Chapel, know that you are
wanted and needed! We humbly ask everyone to commit to
only one hour each week with our Lord so that Perpetual
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament will stay strong. The
Hours in most need of adorers: Monday - 1am, 3am;
Tuesday - 1am, 6am, 7am; Thursday - 7am; Friday 1am, 2am.

God our Father, Creator of the Universe and Lord over all creation, we humbly stand before you as your children in thanksgiving for your loving care and
protection. We ask that you keep us safe from all hurricanes which may threaten us in the coming seasons. Protect us from all fear and anxiety of storms and give us an ardent trust and hope in Your love and mercy. You alone have the power to
command the sea, the wind and the rain. You alone bring peace, calm, and safety. Father, we thank you in advance, for you are our only Refuge. We ask this through Christ, Your Son, Who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,
forever and ever. Amen. Mary, Queen of the Apostles, and
Patroness of our Diocese, pray for us.
The Knitting Angels
of St Martin's are in
need of yarn. We are
beginning our "busy season" of
making hats/scarves for winter
homeless in cold climates.
Any yarn hiding in your closet
would be welcomed!
