FASTING & ABSTINENCE

REGULATIONS FOR LENT

Ash Wednesday & Good Friday; are days of fast and abstinence.

Fridays of Lent are also days of abstinence.

Fasting is to be observed by all 18 years of age through age 59. On a fast day, one full meal is allowed. Two other meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one's needs, but together

they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including

milk and juices, are allowed.

Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence, no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously

affected, the law does not oblige. When in doubt concerning fast and abstinence, the parish priest

should be consulted.

Fasting almsgiving. and prayer are the three disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens

should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance, and of preparation for baptism or of

renewal of baptism at Easter.

Join us this Friday evening in the

Tuscany Banquet Room of the

San Mart’ Inn before Stations of

the Cross for a delicious “Fast”

Food meal of Pasta Fagioli,

Spaghetti Puttanesca,

Salad & Bread.

The cost is $5.00 per person. Water, Lemonade or Iced Tea is included.

STRUGGLING AFTER AN ABORTION? YOU ARE NOT ALONE!

HOPE AFTER ABORTION: Experience the healing love of Jesus Christ during a Rachel’s Vineyard healing retreat. This retreat offers an opportunity to deeply enter into the grieving process and identify the ways your abortion(s) may have

affected you or a loved one. Discussions, spiritual exercises, prayer and reflection combined with the Sacrament of Reconciliation, a Memorial Service honoring your child and a beautiful Mass, will help to heal the wounds of your past. Participation is strictly confidential and offers a beautiful opportunity to

experience God’s love, forgiveness and tender compassion. Both men and women are invited to experience this healing for their soul. This healing program is an apostolate of the Catholic Charities Office of Respect Life of the Diocese of

Palm Beach; however, those from other faith backgrounds are welcome to attend.

The retreat begins on Friday, April 25 thru Sunday, April 27, 2014. It will be held at Casa San Carlos Retreat Center, in Delray Beach.

Pre-registration is required.

To register or for more information call Donna Gardner at 561.602.4778 or email [email protected] all calls and emails are CONFIDENTIAL!

Turn Toward Heaven

“For me, prayer is a surge of the heart; it is a simple look turned toward heaven, it is a cry of recognition and of

love, embracing both trial and joy.” - St. Therese of Lisieux.

A “simple look toward heaven” is a look that is seeking God. While prayer is oriented to The Father, He is

available only through The Son. Our ability to call God “Father” is entirely because of Jesus, who taught us to

pray using that name. Recall that God provided Moses a different name. The name given Moses, YHWH,

revealed God’s infinite majesty. It conveyed an understanding but was traditionally held to be unpronounceable.

The name provided by Jesus revealed loving mercy, and “Father” is pronounceable in a most familiar way.

Through the “Son-ship” of Jesus we are given a place for ourselves as sons and daughters. As a result, the

unpronounceable has a name: “Father” and the infinite majesty has a form: “Love.” In our separation from the

infinite and our longing for love, we are compelled to turn toward heaven in prayer.

Fear and awe can make God seem unapproachable at times; perhaps a consequence of our weakness or concern

over His judgment. In need of the comfort and warmth of a Savior, our prayers fall on Jesus. His closeness to

the Father is consoling; His words of forgiveness settling. Divinity combined with humanity let us know He

understands. Through Him we can be reconciled. His sacrifice gave us everything. His loving embrace gives us

courage to turn toward heaven in prayer.

At times we need a mother. Absent the taint of original sin, the Immaculate Virgin has a unique comprehension

of the depth of our fallen state. She witnessed the price sin placed upon her Son. Perhaps perfect purity creates

great empathy toward those in whom it is lacking. When we are hurt or broken, Mary reaches out. Our Mother

gently picks us up, calms with her humility, and provides a model of obedience that leads us to her Son. Mary

takes on the piercing sorrows of our hearts and offers us the grace to turn toward heaven in prayer.

The Saints each have unique devotions, insights or special causes. Prayer for intervention in particular situations

may be especially helpful. The Saints offer hope that holiness is achievable in a broad sense, but may also assist

us within special areas of expertise and wisdom. The intervening prayers by the Saints not only magnify our

own, but as examples of holiness, the Saints illuminate many pathways for us to turn toward heaven in prayer.

Of course, there is our Guardian Angel; a creature of God too, but different from our selves. As such, they know

the inner workings of our spiritual nature. Each one is a friend who guards and guides; a constant companion

who shepherds us to the degree we are willing to be led. Our Guardian Angel is a special spiritual being who

God committed specifically and uniquely to each and every one of us. We may wonder, “What great sacrifice

has it been, dear Angel and friend, to be an offering of God’s pure love to one who is prone to wander?”

Nurtured by the commitment of our own Guardian Angel, there emerges a gentle but repetitive nudge to turn

toward heaven in prayer.

How beautiful is prayer? It connects us to God. A simple look turned towards heaven, but a look whose allure

contains more facets than a diamond and more petals than a rose. If only we are willing to turn.

EVANGELISM IN ACTION: Turn towards heaven and encourage others to take a look.

ADULT FAITH FORMATION AND RCI

How can every Catholic make Lent a time of enlightenment?

We can attend weekly Mass. We can reflect on the Creed, taking each

statement of belief and asking ourselves if we do believe and what it means

in our everyday lives. We can go to Adoration and Confession. We can pray

the Stations of the Cross, pray the Liturgy of the Hours, pray the Rosary. We

must pray every day. We can fast from food, TV, foul language, gossip, and

the list goes on and on. We can give alms in a genuinely sacrificial manner,

to the poor. As Catholics we know all of these things. It is not a lack of

things to do that have many of us scratching our heads on Holy Thursday

wondering why Lent was really not any different for us than any other forty

days throughout the year. What we lack is a conversion of the heart. We

don’t have to seek far to hear God speak to us. The Church in her wisdom

provides us in the Liturgy of the Word at Mass what our hearts yearn to hear.

In the Lenten liturgies the Church prays what she believes and teaches and in

Word and Sacrament the Lord directs us toward his Divine heart.

Join us for this week’s lesson as we take a closer look at the Sacraments of Reconciliation and Anointing of the Sick.

Everyone is welcome, so don't forget to invite a friend or two! Thursdays 9am or 6 pm in the Parish Hall. Registration is FREE — call Agnes Mulligan 772-214-7460 or visit www.Stmartindp.com.

40 Cans for Lent Appeal

The 40 cans for Lent appeal is a food drive coordinated by your Knights of Columbus council. We encourage all parishioners to prayerfully look into their hearts and contribute 40 “cans” ( items from the needed list from the Mathew 25:35 food pantry.) and contribute 1 item for each day in Lent. Drop off points will be at the back of the Church, at the Caritas gift shop lobby, at the food pantry itself in the plaza next to Seacoast Bank on Jensen Beach Blvd and inside Winn Dixie on Jensen Beach Blvd. (We appreciate you using the drop off points as we have volunteers who make regular pick ups there.)

The Food Pantry is in need of canned meats like tuna or chicken, canned vegetables, peanut butter, jelly, 1 lb. bags of rice, soups, canned meals such as spaghetti & meatballs, pasta, canned fruits, cereals, powdered or shelf box milk, canned tomato products, spaghetti sauce and pork & beans.

God Bless you all for your generosity during the Lenten Season!!

Our Matthew 25:35 Soup Kitchen

feeds the hungry and the lonely.

We feed up to 150 people each

Wednesday evening. Some of our patrons are

homeless and the meal they get is their only meal

of the day.

The soup kitchen is in need of some equipment

because the equipment we have is old

and not working properly. We need a

meat slicer (commercial size), a food

processor and an immersion blender.

Any donations toward the purchase of

these items would be gratefully appreciated. All

donations should go to the parish office, marked

for soup kitchen equipment. Thank you and God

bless.
