Grow in Prayer During Lent! A Letter from Our Pastor Dear Friends in the Lord , G reeting and blessings to you, as we prepare for another Lent together! Yes, hard to believe as it may be, here we are, ready to begin another Lent. I truly believe, with all that has been planned, this Lent will be especially blessed. Last year, writing about the three traditional practices of Lent, prayer, fasting and almsgiving, I invited us to consider those ‘disciplines’ from a fresh perspective. Rather a burden we carry through Lent, these practices can be life giving opportu- nities to experience God’s healing love, as we make a journey together, support- ing one another. Fasting, prayer and alms- giving can deepen relationships. Think discipline, discipleship, ways of learning to walk with the Lord, and with our sisters and brothers. Last year I offered some ways to see fast- ing and almsgiving from the relationship perspective. Now to prayer. Naturally, prayer, by definition, is connecting with God. Whether traditional prayers we offer, conversational prayer, journaling, sacraments, quiet listening, centering prayer – all lead us to a deeper relation- ship with the Lord. Prayer also connects us to others – those we pray for, those we pray with; prayer can even lead us to a deeper relationship with the world God has given to us. This Lent we will offer a wide variety of opportunities to pray, and to grow in prayer. Little black books give material for a bit of meditation each day, plus an invitation and reminder to ‘spend some quiet time with the Lord.’ Our Tri-parish mission will provide an opportunity to reflect together on healing and forgiveness with Fr. William Jarema, and with friends at Transfiguration and St. Catherine’s. Natu- rally, praying together will be a key part of the retreat. We will have Lenten oppor- tunities on Mondays and Fridays. There is the opportunity to read a book together, and then have a book discussion. There will be sessions to gain a deeper under- standing of the sacrament of reconcilia- tion, and recent changes in its practice. Stations of the Cross every Friday eve- ning at 7:00 PM, weekday Masses, Adora- tion, Holy Hour, Rosary, all the usual opportunities, plus a new one: a Day of Penance, the Tuesday of Holy Week, will be celebrated throughout the diocese. Through our discipleship during Lent, we will be well prepared for the richest and most central liturgical prayer of our church, the Paschal Triduum: Holy Thurs- day, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil. Few experiences can rival the Triduum liturgies for connecting us with the Lord in his last days, with our fellow parishion- ers, with Christians around the world, and with those who lived the faith long before we were born. Please put the Triduum on your calendar! One other new item – a new ministry, Living Our Strengths. Lenten Mondays of 2013

W e have a longstanding tradition at St. Louis of offering rich opportunities for prayerful and

festive gatherings on the Mondays of Lent. This year, look for added events on other weekdays, such as Friday Stations, a Day of Penance, and the Fruit of the Vine series, a book discussion, all to make your Lent of 2013 EXTRA prayerful! Following are the Mondays of Lent:

FEBRUARY 18 – 12NOON Celebrating Reconciliation: The Rite of Penance What happened to communal penance services? How do we seek forgive-ness? Aren’t we all in this together? This session, with a Q & A, follows the 11:00 AM Mass and includes lunch in the parish meeting hall. FEBRUARY 25 – 7:30 PM Celebrating Reconciliation. What’s with all the changes? A chance to sort it all out, including Q & A, and prayer. MARCH 4 Two sessions will be offered by our tri-parish retreat director, Fr. Bill Jarema. The first follows the 11:00 AM Mass and includes lunch. The second is offered at 7:00 PM. Please note that all retreat evenings begin at 7:00 rather than 7:30! (Please see page 2 for information on the tri-parish retreat.) MARCH 11 – 7:30 PM Once again the choir Musica Spei (Music of Hope) will lead us in a beautiful evening of musical Stations of the Cross. Come and listen to some of the earliest sounds of the Church, and experience an unforgettable way of the cross. MARCH 18 – 7:30 PM IN REDDINGTON HALL GYM Come and celebrate your Irish roots a wee bit late with Tullamore Celtic Band and Celtic dancers in the gym. We will be serving lots of treats and even some Irish coffees! March 25 - 7:30 PM We are all invited to join Catholics from around our diocese at Sacred Heart Cathedral for the Chrism Mass.

kicked off a few weeks ago. A number of people are already learning about their unique talents, or top signature themes. By the time the Easter season rolls around, I am certain Living Our Strengths will be a great sign of new life here at St. Louis. God bless you all as we begin this holy season together.

Peace, Fr. Bob

M ark your calendars for the Fruit of the Vine events! We begin with a wine tasting at 7:00 pm. Then at

7:30 pm we have a presentation and discussion on topics that help us to live our faith every day. These events in our Parish Meeting Hall are free and open to the public, so bring a friend. Non-alcoholic beverages are also available. You won’t want to miss these!

Traveling Through the Holy Land with Stephanie Honz: February 26

Fr. Jim Schwartz and Stephanie Honz present The Footsteps of Jesus in the Holy Land. We will journey from the site of the Annunciation through the death and rising of Christ, visiting some of the most sacred places in Israel both visu-ally, and through reflections on the scriptures. We will also show some of the historical aspects of the Holy Land such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, Massada, the Israel museum, and the Golan Heights where Israel produces much of its wine. We will offer light appetizers typical of the time when Jesus lived, along with some of the wines produced today in Israel.

We Were Never Their Age with Deacon Tom Driscoll: March 21

♦ Join in the conversation about the generational

differences in the American Catholic Church. ♦ Why have so many white Catholics in their 20's, 30's

and 40's walked away from the institutional church? ♦ How do I talk to my adult children and my grandchil-

dren about faith and God. What if my adult children do not agree with my values and practice of Catholicism?

♦ Where do they stand on the "hot" issues: homosexual marriage, racism, the 1%, spirituality, tolerance, abortion.

♦ Worried about your grandchild's religious development?

Practical suggestions. Challenging questions. Your issues addressed.

HABITAT INTERFAITH PARTNERSHIP’S 2013 HOUSE PROJECT

by Bob Scholl

G ame On!! Our Habitat coalition, Habitat Interfaith Partnership (HIP), has just been assigned a housing

site and construction start date! 626 Brown Street will be the site of our 2013 house project. The April construction start date will be here in no time. HIP is a “coalition” of local faith groups and one civic organization, formed in 2001 to assist Flower City Habitat for Humanity (FCHH), the Rochester Area’s chapter of the international organization, in their mission of “. . . making decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.” FCHH invites people of all backgrounds, races, and religions to build houses together in partnership with families in need of decent and affordable housing. Joining St. Louis Church in the HIP coalition are the following faith and civic groups: Christ Episcopal Church, First Presbyterian Church of Pittsford, Islamic Center of Rochester, Mount Olivet Baptist Church, Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, Temple Sinai of Penfield, and Pittsford Rotary. While FCHH secures the prop-erty, eligible home owners, construction materials and professional construction oversight, our coalition raises the funds needed to purchase the construction materials and provides the construction volunteers. This year’s build constitutes HIP’s 5th house since 2001, and most noteworthy, the privilege of helping to construct FCHH’s 200th house (since 1984) in the Rochester area! HIP has a wide variety of work to do and thus people of varying abilities can participate and make mean-ingful contributions. Pre-construction efforts, which include fund raising, event

planning, publicity, and volunteer scheduling, are under-way. Kathleen Anderson, Delaina Infantino, Rick Cusker, Mary Ellen Anderson, Louise Vanni, Brian McMahon, John Ghidiu, Nancy Polizzi, and Bob and Rosemary Scholl from St. Louis are joining with volunteers from each of our member faith groups in these preconstruction efforts. Because construction begins in April, we will be signing up construction volunteers through the next two months. Construction is projected to require the participa-tion of 6 volunteers per day over a period of about 77 days. Based on the size of our parish and past perform-

ance, we are aiming for St. Louis to supply volunteers to fill at least 130 of the coalition’s total 462 (i.e., 77 days x 6 volunteers) work slots. Most of the skills needed by construction volunteers will be taught on the job by a professional on-site construction supervisor. Whether they volunteer a single day or several, those who have helped with construction of earlier Habitat projects have found that, while it involves physical labor, it is a very rewarding experience to work alongside the prospective home owner and member faith groups. If interested in helping with house con-struction, please contact Brian McMahon (383-6005 or [email protected]) or Bob Scholl (381-3760 or [email protected]).We are presently redesigning our HIP website (www.habitatinterfaithpartnership.org) to facilitate volunteer sign-up. An announce-ment will go out as soon as the enhanced web site and schedule of available work dates are ready. Call Bob Scholl for further information regarding Habitat for Humanity.

This recently completed house, is on Brown Street where our HIP coali-tion will have the privilege of build-ing the 200th house for Flower City Habitat for Humanity. Lead Site Supervisors, Erwin & Edwin Mageary (twins!) will oversee con-struction, teach volunteers and keep team projects on schedule. Help to lay a foundation, hang drywall, install insulation, paint . . . There are numerous tasks, large and small, indoors and outdoors, some-thing for everyone who would like to build this home!

Lenten Book Discussion Join Members of the Parish Council in reading “Who Wrote the Bible?”, by Richard Elliott Friedman. Following our personal reading, Fr. Bob will facilitate two sessions to discuss the book: Sunday, March 10 after the 11 AM Mass, and Wednesday, March 13 at 3:30 PM. Friedman delves into the background of

the beginning books of the Old Testament, those books traditionally attributed to Moses. It is a fascinating read, more like a mystery novel than a scholarly writing. Author Richard Elliott Friedman

is one of the premier biblical scholars in the country and is a consultant to universities, journals, encyclopedias, and publishers. Books are available for purchase at Barnes and Noble (locally and online store), Amazon.com, and Booksamillion.com; seven copies are available through the Monroe County Library system. Contact Carol McManus, Parish Council Vice-Chair, phone: 465-2365 or by email: [email protected] for further information about this opportunity. We hope you will join us on this journey to more deeply understand our faith, during this “Year of Faith”, proclaimed by His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI.

ST. LOUIS LENTEN CHALLENGE 2013

Following last year’s enormously successful Lenten H2O Project Challenge, we are excited to announce this year’s CRS Rice Bowl Challenge.

CRS Rice Bowl is a nationwide Catholic Relief Services’ Lenten program used each year by nearly 13,000 parishes and schools. In their homes, participants PRAY, SACRIFICE, or FAST, in solidarity with those who hunger; LEARN about our global community and the challenges of hunger and poverty around the world; and GIVE sacrificial donations to those in need.

When you give to CRS Rice Bowl: 25 percent of your donations go to alleviate hunger and poverty in your own community; and 75 percent of your donations support CRS’s humanitarian relief programs of the world's poorest people each year. ($10 provides a family with 2 weeks of food.) Through 37 years of participation in CRS Rice Bowl, Catholics have donated more than $200 million to help the poor.

Your Lenten Challenge CRS Rice Bowl Starter Kits are available in church at all Masses.

WHAT YOU GIVE UP FOR LENT CHANGES LIVES!!

Mark your calendars now for our parish CRS Rice Bowl event, FOR LENT, FOR LIFE, on Sunday, March 3 after the 9:00 a.m. Mass. Look for details in upcoming St. Louis Church bulletins.

Day of Penance

An invitation to experience God’s love: On March 26, 2013, every parish in the Diocese of Rochester will offer the opportunity for individual confession, 12:30-7:30 pm. Catholics believe that

the sacrament of Penance (sometimes called Confession or Reconciliation) is a

graced opportunity for us to celebrate God's forgiveness. The Diocese of Rochester is providing a new website as a review of the sacrament, and it answers many of the ques-tions you might have. Try it out! http://Forgiven.dor.org
