HAPPY EASTER!

This weekend we celebrate First Communion with 73 of our parish chil-dren…we already celebrated on April 19 with 18 others…this is an exciting day for the children but also for their families as they bring their child to the Table of the Lord…what a fond memory this will be for these families as the Lord feeds and nourishes these young ones with the Food of Life in the Blessed bread and wine…these families have prepared over the last eight weeks for this day and for this meeting with the Lord…parents have come to classes and worked with their children with a workbook; children have had their own classes and have taken time with their parents and other family members to learn of how God and the Lord Jesus wants them to grow through this special Sacrament of love…we rejoice with them today and know that their presence will enrich the faith of our parish community. The Easter season continues for a few more weeks and what a fitting time to share the Eucharist for the first time with these children…next week at the 4:30 Sat. Mass we will pray over the candidates for the Sacrament of Confir-mation from our parish…they will be confirmed by Bishop Clark and his delegates next Monday at Sacred Heart Cathedral …we look forward to cele-brating this maturing in faith that the gift of the Holy Spirit signifies for these members of our community. One of the ways that people share in our life is by their willingness to pitch in and help…this past week Saint’s Place held their annual ‘Annual Super Sale’…it was a huge success because of so many people giving so much of their time and energy…sure, the people who came and purchased helped for a $42,000+ profit, but the real workers who came in advance to work on set up or pricing or carrying and organizing really made this a tremendous suc-cess…Reddington Hall is transformed for those 4 days into a collection of collectibles (and some non-collectibles also)…I am grateful for each and every person who gave something to this effort…it is a real testimony to the blessings that we give to one another. Along those same lines, there is a notice in the bulletin today about Vacation

THE EMPLOYMENT

NETWORK

The Employment Network is a series of five sessions designed to help peo-ple who are out of work, wanting to change positions, or reentering the work force. The EN Team of experi-enced trainers will provide support and guidance in the areas of planning a work search, preparing a resume, networking, interviewing, and offer-ing other direction.

Sessions will be held on Wednesday evenings, right here at St. Louis. The remaining sessions will be held on these Wednesdays: May 6, 13, and 20 from 7 to 9:00 pm in the Youth Room below the Meeting Hall. For additional information contact Gary Stekloff, 585-737-6213 or at [email protected].

Bible School…this too will be based on a lot of very generous and considerate people giving of themselves for the good of our kids…there is always room for more people to help, so give Lisa or Sue a call if you can help on any day or have a special talent that could help the success of the VBS. The other major ministry that is based on so many good ministers and stewards is that of our Faith Formation pro-grams…Seasons of Faith ended last Sunday and Living Faith concluded classes on Tuesday…both of these programs are strongly supported by people like yourself who give of their time and talents to share the knowledge and experience of faith with our children…to this list, let us acknowledge the teachers who help us with First Penance and First Com-munion…a huge THANK YOU to all who help as teachers and aides in these programs…we could not do what we do without this kind of support… again, we are blessed so generously. A reminder that besides the gift of time and talent, we depend on your gift of Treasure…we ask every parishioner to do what they are able…we have placed in the bulletin the form to be used by those who wish to have their monthly collec-tion taken directly from their banking account…called Direct Deposit or Electronic Transfer…just fill in the form and return it in the collection or to the Ministry Center. Have a good week…how’s my walking?...Peace!

“It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man. It is better to take refuge

in the Lord than to trust in princes.” - Psalm 118:8-9

Too often our society trains us to take refuge in man-made riches. Yet Thomas Merton once wrote, “There is no poverty so great as that of the prosperous.” Too many posses-sions can leave us empty - always questing for more things that do not really matter - while we ignore Our Lord.

This week’s Tithing is for

Italian Earthquake Victims

Next week’s Tithing is for

St. Bridget’s

For over fifteen years St. Bridget’s Church in Rochester has sponsored a scholarship program for high school seniors of St. Bridget’s and Immaculate Conception Parishes. This program is dedicated to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The interested students must complete an application, write an essay express-ing how their lives have been influenced by Dr. King, and be interviewed by a committee.

Once a year the Scholarship Presentation takes place with Mass, dinner and entertainment. The awarding of these scholarships by St. Bridget’s is one way the parish encourages young people to go forth to happy and successful lives. Our tithing next week will help support that effort.

TITHING

REQUESTS

Ever wonder how a cause becomes the tithing desig-nation for each week? Our Tithing Committee meets each quarter to re-view the various causes that are sub-mitted by parishioners or from those that directly contact us. The commit-tee assigns one or more causes to a particular weekend and writes a brief summary that appears in the bulletin of the purpose of the group or how they will use the tithe.

If you would like to submit a cause for consideration, please send it: c/o the Tithing Committee at the Minis-try Center.

You should give a brief description of the organization, their resources, a possible financial statement, and how they will use the tithe. A personal statement of why you believe this cause is a worthy one is helpful. In-clude your name and phone number so we can contact you if there are any questions.

WE GROW IN FAITH: FAITH FORMATION AND YOUTH MINISTRY

W h o ’ s reading this?

I need to know…is it Teens…or Moms…or Grandfathers or Little Sis?

I write this column every week, every year. Never, since I’ve been privileged to be Youth Minister have I missed a week. It’s been nearly 8 years, So, who’s reading this column?

My curiosity is driven by the desire to find the best way to reach our teens & get them involved.

During the eight years, I’ve tried reaching our teens through this col-umn, through mass mailings to teens (and parents), through email, and text. As of late, text works, but as most peo-ple know, it only is effective if you have a cell number to text. I have about 50 cell numbers of our teens…but we all know virtually all our 250 high school teens have a cell phone…so give up the number!!! Moms…some help maybe??

The bottom-line is Youth Group is a great opportunity for our teens. It’s casual and a good way to meet new friends. This year we have a real mixed group, about a quarter from each of the four main high schools; Sutherland, Mendon, Mercy & McQuaid.

So, if you are reading this…tell me how to reach you…. because we want you! We only have a few more Youth Groups this year, so try it this month…this week, the 17th and the 31st. (if you need a Mother’s Day present for next week, come this week…we will be doing something for Mom). On he 31st we will have a picnic…hopefully with SUMO wrestling suits!!!!

Congratulations 2009 First Communion Class!!

We are celebrating the Sacrament of First Communion with 90 children of our parish this weekend at the 4:30 pm, 9:00 am, 11:00 am and 1:00 pm Masses, and also celebrated First Communion with children at the 9:00 am Mass back on April 19. We congratulate them and their fami-lies for all the hard work they did in preparation for this special time. Now that they have achieved this place in their lives, we look forward to their continued participation with our parish community each and every time they will be at Mass with us. These children have now come to the table of the Eucharist, the great banquet, sharing a place with Jesus through the gift of himself as the Body and Blood of Christ.

Sunshine Luncheon

For over 30 years, our Parish and School Communities have sponsored the Sunshine Luncheon. We in-vite residents from area nursing homes as well as our own home-bound parishioners to Reddington Hall for a home-cooked luncheon as well as lively entertainment. The food is prepared by volunteers and served by the School’s Sixth Grade students; other students provide the entertainment and decorations.

This year’s Sunshine Luncheon will take place on this Thursday, May 7.

Thank you to everyone who indicated on their Stewardship card that they were interested in helping at this event. Hopefully, everyone has been contacted. For those of you who are making the chicken casserole, a recipe will be mailed or e-mailed to you very shortly. A word of caution:

BECAUSE OF FOOD ALLERGIES, PLEASE NO NUTS OR COCONUT!

If you have any questions or if you would like to donate a dessert/appetizer, please contact either of our co-chairs:

SAINT’S PLACE

Saint’s Place extends a huge thank you to all the people who made our Annual Super Sale so successful. At the top of our list are the volunteers, who so generously gave of their time and talents. We averaged 120 volunteers each day, working from 9 to 5! (That in itself is an incredible feat!) The final figure for the Annual Super Sale is well over $42,000. This amount reflects an increase of five thousand dollars from the Annual Super Sale of 2008. There was an increase in the number of shoppers, but they were very careful of their spending, reflecting the tough economic times.

Thank you to the volunteers, who spent innumerable hours moving, lifting, setting up, pricing, organizing, reorganizing, helping customers and finally cleaning up. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. You are Saint’s Place, the heart and the soul that gives and keeps giving, extending the hands of friendship to all. This year we welcomed many new volunteers, young and old, parishioners and members of other churches, college, high school and middle school students. There is an amazing spirit that abounds during this hectic, sometimes chaotic time. There is no other way to describe it other than the Holy Spirit in action. It was great to see so many dedicated, hard-working people motivated for the sole reason of welcoming refugees to our community. “I was a stranger and you welcomed me.” - Matthew 25:35

Special thank you to the Maintenance/Operations crew for their untiring support and assistance. Your long hours, smiling faces and willingness to adapt to our ever-changing needs is truly remarkable. Thank you to all students from McQuaid High School who shared their spring break with us. They provided much needed physical strength and youthful insights.

Thank you to the donors, who so generously provided us with items to sell and for the financial contributions. The quality and quantity of items this year was very impressive. We have quickly become known as the “premier church sale.” Our first sale, which was held in 2001, netted a profit of just over $1,000. We have come a long way in short time!

Thank you to our neighbors and friends who allowed us to place signs advertising our sale on their lawns.

This remarkable accomplishment is due to the overwhelming support from our parish. Working together we can and do achieve so much.

A big thank you to several local food establishments for their donation of food: Great Northern Pizza, Pontillo’s, Wendy’s, Coal Tower, Wegman's, Arby's.

Thank you to Fred and Karen Giovagnoli for cooking and selling the hot dogs and soda. The hot dogs have become as fa-mous as our sale! Fred and Karen have donated their time and talents since our first sale in 2001.

A special thank you to staff and students of Saint Louis School who allowed us to use their beautiful school and their tables & bookshelves. The energetic, loving and caring spirit of your school is present even in your absence. Thank you for build-ing that spirit and allowing us to be inspired by it. God Bless you all. My dear friends, It was forty-five years ago that the Diocese of Rochester sent the first Sisters to work in the missions. Today, I am happy to proclaim the weekend of May 16th and 17th as our annual Diocesan Missions Sun-day. This annual observance continues to be our way of supporting and encouraging our own Sisters of St. Joseph in Brazil and Sisters of Mercy in Chile.

The Sunday's Gospel challenges us to put our love into action. Our love is our prayer and financial gift in support of our diocesan missionaries. We must al-ways be a channel of love. We must not be afraid to reach out and help our brothers and sisters.

On the street I saw a small girl, cold and shivering in a thin dress, with little hope of a decent meal. I became angry and said to God: "Why did you permit this? Why

don't you do something about it?" For a while God said nothing. That night he re-plied quite suddenly: "I certainly did something about it. — I made you."

May each one of you accept the challenge and do what you can and be a witness to the Gospel as we hear the words "Christ needs you to help". Matthew H. Clark,

Bishop of Rochester

Pentecost Sunday, May 31, 2009

There is an old expression, “red-letter day.” It has come to mean a lucky day or a memorable day. It originated from the practice of print-ing in red ink on calendars and in day books, Saint’s feast days and Holydays. One could easily tell that it was a special day because of the red ink. The liturgical color red is associated with special days, too, like the feast days of the Apostles, Evangelists, martyrs, and days com-memorating Our Lord’s passion, like Passion Sunday and Good Friday. The color red also symbolizes char-ity, zeal, and the Holy Spirit.

Pentecost is the fiftieth day after Easter, it is Easter’s Jubilee. It is known as the birthday of the church. It is when the Holy Spirit came down on the apostles in the form of tongues of fire, fulfilling the divine promise that the God’s Spirit is with us forever.

It is our tradition to come to Mass on Pentecost wearing something red. We also read the second reading in a foreign language. We would like to make this Pentecost Sunday a red-letter day. So please wear something red to Mass on May 31.

Also if you can read a foreign lan-guage and would like to read the second reading that day in that language, would you please con-tact Deacon John before Sunday, May 17. He can be reached at 586-5675, x234, or at [email protected].

Building Peace with Justice To follow Jesus we have to learn to listen for that deeper truth to which his life is witness and to which He calls us. This truth is deeper than nationalism or self protection. It is based in nonvio-lent love for all human being and in forgiveness. Nuclear weapons signify a willingness to incinerate or vaporize millions of innocent human persons. That is why Bishop Gabino Zavala of Los Angeles recently urged Catholics in a talk in Great Falls, Montana, to work to rid the world of nuclear weap-ons. They are incompatible with the peace that the Church teaches. The Gospel asks us to approach every problem from the point of view of respect for life and promises that God will be with us in this effort.

We will offer a Book Review of The Shack on May 19 at 7:30 pm in the Parish Meeting Hall. This very popular book has some insights for us about faith and God that can be opportunities for growth. Like any book, it has a mixed message in some regards. Plan to join Deacon John and Fr. Kevin for an informative session. There will be an opportunity for you to share your insights also.

Gather up your little adventure seekers and bring them to:
