Perhaps these three January feasts help us get off on the right foot in this new year of grace? The first solemnity we celebrate in the new year is the solemnity of Mary Mother of God. This beautiful feast day that we celebrate on Jan. 1 conveys our belief that Mary is the Mother of God, that she is the God bearer of our savior. This teaching not only affirms our belief that Christ is our savior, but also that all of us are called to be God bearers as well. Mary is the God bearer parexcellance, but through our baptism we are called to give birth to Christ’s love to the world. The church is telling us on the first day of the year that all of us are called in are own way to give birth to Christ’s love in our words and in our actions every day of the year. The second feast is the Epiphany or the coming of the Magi. Perhaps one of the great messages of this feast comes from the last sentence in the gospel which we hear at the mass, “And they went home a different way.” St. Leo the Great says this little phrase cannot be reduced to a new geographic route, but primarily refers to a conversion they had while encountering the baby Jesus. The early bishop proclaims when you have an encounter with Jesus you cannot go back home the same way, you are changed for the better. You are transformed with the love of God running through your veins and heart. As we begin a new year maybe this feast of the Epiphany is reminding us to continually encounter the baby Jesus in our life and like the three kings “go home a new way.” The third feast is the Baptism of the Lord in the river Jordan. During this holy event God the Father confirms to one and all that Jesus is the Son of God. He is the long awaited messiah and that we can trust in him. This feast day not only confirms for us Jesus’ identity, but it also confirms our identity as sons and

daughters of the Lord. God the father clearly conveys to each of us, This is my boy, my daughter, who I am well pleased, and like our Lord, who did not stay in the river, we likewise did not stay in the fount. We began our ministry to be his disciples in our world today.Three January feast days right off the start that give us a

solid spiritual strategy for a new year of grace: The call to be God bearers to the world, the desire to cultivate an intimate relationship with Christ and never forget who Christ is and who we are because of our Baptism. By living out this solid spiritual strategy we will have a happy new year.
