ADVENT PENANCE SERVICE

Our regional Advent Penance Service will take place this Sunday evening, December 17th, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, at 7:00 PM. We will begin with a communal prayer service and conclude with an opportunity for all present to celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation privately with one of the number of priests present for the service. We encourage you to take this opportunity to prepare your heart to receive the Lord anew as Christmas approaches.

A Winter’s Reminder— · · Before venturing out, it is always prudent to call the parish office to check our open or closed status. You may also consult our parish website. · · Personal Safety (yours and others on the road) is our main concern. One does not put one’s self in a state of serious sin by missing Mass on a day when travel to/from church would be hazardous and put one’s self or others in danger.

EARLY BULLETIN DEADLINES Please note the following Holiday deadlines for submitting bulletin notices at our publishers request:

The Word in Our Lives: Readings for December 24, 2017

The 4th Sunday of Advent

First Reading: 2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16 When King David was settled in his palace, and the LORD had given him rest from his enemies on every side, he said to Nathan the prophet, "Here I am living in a house of cedar, while the ark of God dwells in a tent!" Nathan answered the king, "Go, do whatever you have in mind, for the LORD is with you." But that night the LORD spoke to Nathan and said: "Go, tell my servant David, 'Thus says the LORD: Should you build me a house to dwell in?' "It was I who took you from the pasture and from the care of the flock to be commander of my people Israel. I have been with you wherever you went, and I have destroyed all your enemies before you. And I will make you famous like the great ones of the earth. I will fix a place for my people Israel; I will plant them so that they may dwell in their place without further disturbance. Neither shall the wicked continue to afflict them as they did of old, since the time I first appointed judges over my people Israel. I will give you rest from all your enemies. The LORD also reveals to you that he will establish a house for you. And when your time comes and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise up your heir after you, sprung from your loins, and I will make his kingdom firm. I will be a father to him, and he shall be a son to me. Your house and your kingdom shall endure forever before me; your throne shall stand firm forever."

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 89:2-3, 4-5, 27, 29 Second Reading: Romans 16:25-27 Brothers and sisters: To him who can strengthen you, according to my gospel and the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery kept secret for long ages but now manifested through the prophetic writings and, according to the command of the eternal God, made known to all nations to bring about the obedience of faith, to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ be glory forever and ever. Amen. Gospel: Luke 1:26-38 The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town of Galilee called Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David, and the virgin's name was Mary. And coming to her, he said, "Hail, full of grace! The Lord is with you." But she was greatly troubled at what was said and pondered what sort of greeting this might be. Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. "Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus. He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give him the throne of David his father, and he will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end." But Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I have no relations with a man?" And the angel said to her in reply, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God." Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word." Then the angel departed from her.

Stewardship In January 2013, the finance council (after much research and analysis), put forth a recommendation to refinance the mortgage for St. Joseph Church. Many may recall this given the number of updates provided during that time and on occasion since. We refinanced approximately $1.8m at a lower interest rate (3.99%) on a note that has a 10-year balloon. Therefore, in 2023, we would need to refinance the balance which was estimated to be $1,009,430 based on the amortization schedule. Since we were enjoying the lower interest, we agreed to make monthly payments as if we had not refinanced, therefore applying approximately 3k more to each payment monthly (knowing we could adjust if we ever needed to do so). Leveraging the ongoing contributions by parishioners as well as a bequest that enabled us to pay off another parish loan for the ceiling at St. Joseph’s Church ahead of schedule (further redirecting those monthly payments towards the mortgage 5k), we have maintained an aggressive payoff plan. We approved this strategy knowing that it was an aspirational goal, and at any point if it became burdensome, we could throttle down the payment. Now for the good news! Because of the continued sacrifice of parishioners and contributions coupled with the approach outlined above, we are tracking to pay off the mortgage in its entirety in November 2022! That is ahead of schedule and there will be no need for incremental financing as the mortgage will be paid in full! As we near this date, we will be carefully reviewing and evaluating the monthly payment size to manage cashflow and avoid prepayment fees. As always, these efforts are only made possible through the generosity of our parishioners to which we are grateful. The offertory collection for last weekend was $12,990. The ACH monthly collection was $11,835 for a total of $24,825. The collection for Debt Reduction was $2,683. Thank you for accepting the responsibility of faithful stewardship.

The message this week once again emphasizes the role of John the Baptist. John’s humility is one that we should strive to emulate. He recognized that the Lord has given him gifts and talents, but more importantly, that these gifts are for the honor and glory of the Lord. Do you utilize your gifts and talents to bring glory to yourself, or to the Lord? This week evaluate your skills, and the gifts that Christ has blessed you with. How are you utilizing them to bolster your faith, and bring glory to the Lord? There are numerous parish ministries that can benefit from your participation, join one, and watch how your gifts flourish in serving the one that provided them to you.

You may phone the Parish Office or email your prayer requests to Kathy Dolde at [email protected] and they will pass them on to members of our Prayer Chain. MARRIAGE MOMENTS Don’t let the busyness of Christmas preparations blind you to the gift of your relationship. Don't let shopping or decorating or worries keep you from treasuring the presence of your beloved.

PARENTING POINTERS Where does God live? Ask your child. Perhaps each of you can draw a picture of God's home. Is God in the sky, in nature, inside you, even in your enemy? YES. Help your children recognize God as an omnipresent Holy Spirit who makes everything they see, hear, and touch sacred.

WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY Please join us for Bible Study on Wednesday mornings at 9:30 AM in the parish center when we break open the Scriptures for the coming Sunday.

We encourage people to share how the readings touch their lives or to sit quietly and listen as others reflect on them. The conversation is easy and informative. Come when and as often as you’d like. If you have questions please call 302-378-5800.
