St. Peter’s is open for Mass. We need it! Adoration rather than protest. If you are sick do not come; if you are afraid or nervous feel free to stay home. Otherwise, at your own risk, feel free to come to whatever Mass you like. First come, first served. You will still need to let the ushers seat you. We will still need our sanitizing crews, and we have been really shorthanded after the 5:30pm Mass on Saturday. Please avoid use of bathrooms as much as possible. The weekend Mass schedule (until further notice): Sat-urday 5:30pm English, 7:00pm Spanish; Sunday 8:00am Spanish, 10:00am English, 12:00 Noon Spanish.

Two Saints to invoke against contagion

St. Roch (died 1327AD) ministered to victims of an epidemic, was responsible for miraculous cures, contracted the disease himself, withdrew to the woods were he was himself miracu-lously healed. He has since been invoked in favor of victims of the plague and other epidemics.

St. Rosalie (died 1166AD) lived as a hermitess and died alone in her cave on Mt. Pelligrino outside Palermo, Sicily. In 1624, when a plague threatened the city she appeared to a hunter, revealed to him the location of her bones and ordered they be carried in procession. After her bones were carried three times around the city the plague ceased. She is the patron saint of Palermo.

SMA & St. Peter Confirmation Update:

We finally have answers!! The Bishop has granted faculties to his Parish Priests to be able to confer the Sacrament in their individual Parishes. What does that mean? That means that our own Pastor can give the Sacrament of Confirmation. The Bishop has asked to be invited to the Confirmations so that he can attend if his schedule allows. If the Bishop should be able to attend any of our Confirmation Masses he will then be the Main Celebrant and confer the Sacra-ment of Confirmation to the Confirmandi.

We have scheduled Confirmation Masses for:

Wednesday, August 5th @ 6:30pm

Thursday, August 6th @ 6:30pm

Wednesday, August 12th @ 6:30pm

Thursday, August 13th @ 6:30pm

Each Confirmation Family should have received a letter in the mail last week with these details and a few more, please call the office and let us know which language you would prefer. That will help us determine the majority for each Mass which will de-termine which language the Mass will be celebrated in.

Eso significa que nuestro propio Pastor puede dar el Sacramento de la Confirmación. El Obispo ha pedido ser invitado a las Confirmaciones para que pueda asistir si su horario lo permite. Si el Obispo pudiera asistir a cualquiera de nuestras Misas de Confirmación, él será el Celebrante Principal y conferirá el Sacramento de la Confirmación al Confirmandi.

From the Pastor’s Desk – Fr. Levine- Last Sunday I wrote about the dignity of different kinds of work. There are types of work that are downright shameful, types of work that are pretty meaningless, and there are types of work that are, to a greater or less degree, inherently worthwhile. Such distinctions these days are often viewed as offensive. Some people even want to remove the shame attached to something like prostitution. Even as regards honest work it might be regarded as offensive to judge that work as a garbage man is less noble than work as a schoolteacher. We might hear the argument that picking up and disposing of the trash is ‘essential’! We could also observe that garbagemen are not likely to do any serious harm in doing their job, but some schoolteachers rather corrupt the minds of children than educate them. Nevertheless, it is important to recognize that some kinds of work are not inherently worthwhile, while some kinds of work contribute in a greater or less degree to the common good of the society. That which serves the common good more directly and on a higher level is inherently more noble. The cultural recognition of the true dignity of different kinds of work educates the populace (and especially the children) to recognize and judge not only between good and evil, but between good and better. Refusal to recognize a true hierarchy of value falsifies the perception of good and evil, good and better. That falsifica-tion is particularly destructive to the lives of children who begin to learn that everything is actually indifferent and meaningless. Nevertheless, I concluded last Sunday, mentioning St. Joseph, the carpenter, who engaged in honest work that contributed to the good of others and enabled him to provide for the Holy Family. If we set that work of carpentry in St. Joseph’s own time and place, it certainly did not rank as high as being a rabbi or a synagogue official. It would not have been esteemed as a merchant or a landowner or an adminis-trator. It would have been more esteemed than the work of a shepherd, or of a hired hand. For all that, St. Joseph was more noble in his person than any man or woman who ever lived, except his wife and the child that was entrusted to his care. He was not dignified by his work, but rather he dignified his work by the nobili-ty of his character. Contrariwise, some people are dignified by a work or an office of which they are not worthy; it is an empty dignity. Others, we could say, fill and even exceed the dignity of their work or office. So, it is much better for person to impart the dignity of his moral character to his work or office, than to receive honor on account of a work or office for which he is inadequate. Returning to the teacher and the garbageman: teaching is a more noble occupation than picking up garbage, but it is better to be an honest, hardworking, garbageman than a lazy, dull minded, ineffectual teacher. If, however, we consider that different kinds of work possess a hierarchy of dignity dependent on their rela-tion to the common good, we discover also an inherent inequality of social order. We also know that some-one who is inherently suited to a more noble task, will find himself engaged in a lower place, while someone most unsuited will be found in a position of dignity, authority, and power. St. Joseph would have been more suited to sit on the throne in Jerusalem than the murderer Herod; indeed St. Joseph, the son of David, even had a better right to the throne. While St. Joseph was grieved by the evil rule of Herod, he was not at all dis-tressed at being deprived of the throne but was content with his humble role. Still this recognition of the more noble and less noble within the social order raises the question of privilege and equality. These days it seems that privilege is regarded simply as a bad thing; the implication is that privi-lege is inherently unjust, contrary to the equality that should hold among the different members of society. We will need to look into that matter a little more closely next week.

Desde el Escritorio del párroco El Padre José – El domingo pasado escribí sobre la dignidad de diferentes tipos de trabajo. Hay tipos de trabajo que son fran-camente vergonzosos, tipos de trabajo que son bastante insignificantes, y hay tipos de trabajo que, en mayor o menor grado, son inherentemente valiosos. Tales distinciones en estos días a menudo se consideran ofensivas. Algunas personas incluso quieren eliminar la vergüenza asociada a algo como la prostitución. Incluso con respecto al trabajo honesto, podría considerarse ofensivo juzgar que el trabajo como basurero es menos noble que el trabajo como maestro de escuela. ¡Podríamos escuchar el argumento de que recoger y desechar la basura es 'esencial'! También podríamos ob-servar que no es probable que los basureros hagan ningún daño grave al hacer su trabajo, pero algunos maes-tros de escuela corrompen las mentes de los niños en lugar de educarlos.

Sin embargo, es importante reconocer que algunos tipos de trabajo no son inherentemente valiosos, mientras que algunos tipos de trabajo contribuyen en mayor o menor grado al bien común de la sociedad. Lo que sirve al bien común más directamente y en un nivel superior es inherentemente más noble.

El reconocimiento cultural de la verdadera dignidad de los diferentes tipos de trabajo educa a la población (y especialmente a los niños) a reconocer y juzgar no sólo entre el bien y el mal, sino entre el bien y el mejor. Negarse a reconocer una verdadera jerarquía de valores falsifica la percepción del bien y del mal, del bien y del mejor. Esa falsificación es particularmente destructiva para la vida de los niños que comienzan a aprender que todo es realmente indiferente y sin sentido. Sin embargo, concluí el domingo pasado, mencionando a San José, el carpintero, que se dedicó a un trabajo honesto que contribuyó al bien de los demás y le permitió mantener a la Sagrada Familia. Si establecemos ese trabajo de carpintería en el tiempo y el lugar de San José, ciertamente no sería tan alto co-mo ser un rabino o un funcionario de la sinagoga. No habría sido estimado como comerciante, terrateniente o administrador. Hubiera sido más estimado que el trabajo de un pastor, o de una mano contratada. Por todo eso, San José fue más noble en su persona que cualquier hombre o mujer que haya vivido alguna vez, excepto su es-posa y el niño que se le confió a su cuidado. No fue digno por su trabajo, sino que dignificó su trabajo por la no-bleza de su carácter. Por el contrario, algunas personas son dignificadas por un trabajo o una oficina de la que no son dignos; Es una dignidad vacía. Otros, podríamos decir, llenan e incluso superan la dignidad de su trabajo u oficina. Por lo tanto, es mucho mejor para la persona impartir la dignidad de su carácter moral a su trabajo u oficina, que recibir hon-or a causa de un trabajo u oficina para la cual es inadecuado. Volviendo al maestro y al basurero: la enseñanza es una ocupación más noble que recoger la basura, pero es mejor ser un basurero honesto y trabajador que un maestro perezoso, aburrido e ineficaz.

Sin embargo, si consideramos que los diferentes tipos de trabajo poseen una jerarquía de dignidad que de-pende de su relación con el bien común, descubrimos también una desigualdad inherente al orden social. También sabemos que alguien que es inherentemente adecuado para una tarea más noble, se encontrará com-prometido en un lugar más bajo, mientras que alguien más inadecuado se encontrará en una posición de digni-dad, autoridad y poder. San José habría sido más adecuado para sentarse en el trono en Jerusalén que el ases-ino Herodes; de hecho, San José, el hijo de David, incluso tenía un mejor derecho al trono. Si bien San José esta-ba afligido por el malvado gobierno de Herodes, no estaba en absoluto angustiado por ser privado del trono, pero estaba contento con su humilde papel. Sin embargo, este reconocimiento de lo más noble y menos noble dentro del orden social plantea la cuestión del privilegio y la igualdad. En estos días parece que el privilegio se considera simplemente como algo malo; la implicación es que el privilegio es inherentemente injusto, contrario a la igualdad que debería tener entre los diferentes miembros de la sociedad. Tendremos que analizar el asunto un poco más de cerca la próxima semana.
